Souvenir sleuthing abroad

Let your home reflect your travel life VERN YIP THE WASHINGTON POST

REG00210790_1_1

Practicality often trumps the desires of the heart when it comes to selecting a souvenir to commemorate a long-planned trip or that once-in-a-lifetime vacation. We talk ourselves into getting something that will slide into the suitcase nicely, is lightweight enough to carry during the rest of the journey or passable enough to justify checking “bring something home” off the list. In some cases, we’re so engaged in sightseeing and activities that we can’t be bothered to detour to that famous handicraft market or off-the-beaten-path artisan store to hunt for that special something to bring home. And although it’s true there’s nothing quite like memories and photos as take-away, it’s often used as an excuse to avoid the vacation shopping experience altogether. Hunting for the finest examples of local handcrafted traditions is high on my list of things to do while on a special journey. VERN YIP

An Atlanta living room sports objects from eight different journeys including trips to India, Thailand, Bali and Tibet.

Souvenir Travel mementoes dot decor Continued from F1 I realize I’m an interior designer whose job it is to understand these kinds of things, but that’s not why I do it. I do it because the best examples of local crafts act as storytellers that give unique insight into the place I’m visiting and often serve as a phenomenal way to meet local artisans and communities. In many cases, these handicrafts involve skills that have been passed on for centuries. They have a way of imbuing a home with soul, and they’re a decent way to support the local economy while helping to sustain the uniqueness of a place. In my opinion, every home should be a true reflection of the people who live there, as well as the journey they’ve been on, which is why I always consider an invitation to someone’s home to be a real honour. Curating that home with thoughtfully selected purchases from each special place you’ve visited is a wonderfully physical way to manifest your life experiences and make walking through your front door a daily highlight. If you find the whole thing a little daunting to tackle, follow some of my guidelines and you’ll soon be discovering treasures like a pro: ■■ Do some homework: A little research ahead of time

can point you in the right direction when it comes to figuring out what to purchase versus what to forgo. Pass on goods imported to that location (“Made in China” is not a good sign unless you’re in China) and concentrate on what that local culture excels at producing. Most guidebooks will direct you to the kinds of local handicrafts you should be tracking down. Certain areas in Vietnam, for example, are famous for lacquered decor goods while others excel at contemporary paintings of local life. Figuring out the specialty of your area ahead of time can really help you focus on selecting the best object for you to bring home. ■■ Assess the opportunities in your home: Before you leave on vacation, take a look around your home for empty spots or areas where you’ve got temporary place holders. It’s always easier to justify something from a trip if you’ve bought it for a specific place. Make sure to have several locations in mind so you have flexibility when you’re actually shopping. You might not find that perfect thing for a certain spot so it’s a good idea to have several locations in mind. In addition to artwork, sculptures and carvings, consider items that also have a practical aspect such as rugs, towels, bedding, dishes and lighting.

Vern Yip

Larger scaled treasures from such disparate locations as France and Burma live together peacefully in the author’s Atlanta foyer. ■■ Take some basic measurements and an empty suitcase with you: To make the process more efficient, take critical measurements (and a lightweight measuring tape, too, if you have room) so you can quickly focus on those items that will actually work and dismiss the rest. If you’re heading to a country that makes beautiful rugs, for example, assess where you could use a rug and measure the overall width and length of that room so you can concentrate on those rugs that will actually fit your space. Make it Right

Beware what lies beneath mIKE HOLMES Make it Right

How many times have you picked up a shovel and started digging because you were either landscaping, installing a deck or a fence, adding a garden, or planting a tree? Did you know you could be breaking the law? Most people don’t know they’re supposed to contact local authorities one week before doing any kind of digging on their property to make sure they don’t hit a gas line, or electrical, plumbing or other cables. April is Safe Digging Month and reminds us all — homeowners and contractors — why we need to call or click before we dig at any time during the year. A system of cables and utility lines runs underground. Sometimes these lines and cables are buried deep below, sometimes not. The risk is too big and it’s way too easy to hit an underground line if you don’t know where they are; just nicking one can cause problems. What’s the risk? For one, you could get seriously hurt. In some cases, it can even cause death. If you hit a gas line it could cause a leak, and that’s very, very dangerous. All it takes is one spark and there can be a major explosion. The entire area must be evacuated and the gas shut off. If you hit an electrical line you could be electrocuted. I’ve heard and read the stories, and they will scare the you-know-what out of you.

People have lost limbs, suffered brain damage, severe burns and/or died because they hit an underground electrical line. You could also cause property damage — not just to your own but also your neighbours’ or the city’s. Hitting a water line could cause a flood, or hitting a sewer line could lead to contamination. Then guess who’s stuck with the damages and repair bill? You are. Some homeowners might even face legal action. Don’t be a headline. If you are planning any kind of work that requires digging you need to get someone to come to your property and mark where all the underground utility lines are located. If you’re hiring someone else to do the work, like a landscaper, don’t assume they’ve done their homework and called the necessary people to figure out where the underg round lines are. Ask them! I f t h e y d i d c a l l , yo u should see different coloured flags or spraypainted markings, or both, on the property. The different colours are for different lines. For example, red is for electric or hydro lines, orange for cable and telephone lines, and yellow is for oil and steam. You

don’t dig on the markings, and you must dig manually (so without the help of mechanical equipment) within one metre of where the markings are. If you see a neighbour digging on their property ask them, “Did you call before you started digging?” It might feel like you’re poking your nose in their business but you’re not. It’s your business too, and you could be helping them avoid a major catastrophe. If you don’t know who to call, visit Clickbeforeyoudig.com. Select the province you or your contractor will be digging in and it will indicate who you need to contact. You might have to contact the utility provider directly or a one-call service, like BC One Call or Ontario One Call. In some cases, you’ll need to contact both the onecall service and utility providers. Locating underground utility lines is a free service, so there’s no excuse. Just plan your landscaping projects ahead of time and call at least one week in advance. Make it right and dig safe. Watch Mike Holmes on Holmes Makes It Right on HGTV. empty suitcases with you to carry home reasonably scaled or fragile items. Anything you carry home will help you save on shipping. ■■ Seek the real deal: Research where to get firstquality specimens ahead of time so you’re not wasting valuable time in tourist traps. If you forget, or can’t seem to figure it out, ask locals where they shop. Local guides and hotel personnel can also be a great resource, but beware of countries where those individuals get commissioned to recommend tourist destinations THE ARTHRITIS SOCIETY

You can control your arthritis Discover the Arthritis Self-Management Program, a six-week learning experience designed to help you control your arthritis. Learn about arthritis and medication, and such important skills as pain management, exercises and coping strategies. rather than direct you to offthe-beaten-path gems with the real deals. ■■ Stick to neutrals or a palette you know will work for you: It’s easy to get distracted by dynamic colours when you’re on vacation. That multicoloured tapestry might look special while you’re wandering the markets of Mexico but end up clashing terribly once you get it home. Keep the colours of your existing decor in mind to help you make selections that will seamlessly work with what you’ve already established.

When in doubt, purchase items in white, shades of neutrals or made with materials in their natural state. ■■ Bring back one great thing: Small items that slip into your primary suitcase are tempting purchases because they require no extra planning or shipping. Their diminutive scale, however, doesn’t result in much of an impact. They can litter the landscape of a room and cause it to look cluttered rather than purposeful. Instead, amass the money you would have used to purchase multiple small items to purchase one exemplary item with some scale to it so it has presence and impact in your space. ■■ Embrace shipping: Keep in mind that FedEx, UPS and DHL (among others) are just about everywhere and can help you ship most anything home. If it doesn’t fit into the empty suitcase you brought with you, but you love it and know it will work, don’t let the significant scale prevent you from pulling the trigger. The next time you travel somewhere you’d like to remember, forget the refrigerator magnets and commemorative T-shirts. Pool your resources and bring back one truly meaningful object that will serve as a permanent reminder of how special your entire life journey has been.

Weighing your housing options There are many things to consider when purchasing a home, and weighing the options between a newly built home versus used, is one of them. Stu Niebergall, President & CEO of the Regina & Region Home Builders’ Association (RRHBA) lists the top reasons why home buyers chose a truly new home over a used one. No-worries advantage New homes are quality-constructed using the most up-to-date building codes and have the latest in no-maintenance products. With everything brand new, you won’t have the stress and worry of the ongoing upgrades, repairs and maintenance that come with a used home. Lower operating costs With a truly new home, you will be saving money through low cost ownership. A used home may have tired and worn out components but, with a truly new home, you won’t be replacing such costly items as the furnace and air conditioning systems, siding and windows, and you won’t need a new roof. Your kitchen and bathrooms won’t need updating and you won’t need to re-insulate or repair the basement. Your truly new home won’t need a redesign or new paint. When weighing the options, home buyers consider these expenditures as the unadvertised costs of not buying new.

Energy efficiency If you care about going green, whether that means saving money on your utility bills or a concern about the environment, a newly built home is about 66 per cent more energy efficient than a home built 30 years ago and is 30 per cent more efficient than a home built as recently as 2005. Newly built homes include more efficient heating and cooling systems, resource efficient plumbing products, higher levels of insulation, more efficient windows and doors, and Energy Star™ appliances. Indoor air quality New homes are not only energy-efficient, but they also have high performance state-of-the-art ventilation and air-filtration systems. This means year-round, draft-free comfort and higher indoor air quality. There are no moulds and lingering

odours that may have infiltrated a used home. Having your home designed your way Why settle for someone else’s choices when you can have your home, your way? When you get a fresh start with a newly built home, you can have the home of your dreams — customized to suit your tastes. From paint colours to flooring, and from countertops and kitchen cabinets, this is your chance to get what you really want. Homes that suit today’s living Newly built homes are designed with such conveniences as ample storage space, including pantries and walk-in closets, conveniently located and spacious bathrooms, and open-concept kitchens and living areas to suit today’s lifestyle. You can also enjoy high ceilings and plenty of natural light. With a truly new home, you won’t have the annoyance of

MONTH

small, boxed-in rooms, lack of closet space and the tiny bathrooms of a used home. New homes can also be prewired for today’s technology, giving you built-in options for your entertainment, security and home office needs. Community amenities Today’s new neighbourhoods are being created as complete communities. This means that new homes located in these neighbourhoods will be close to community amenities such as shopping and work. You will also enjoy plenty of park space and wellconnected walking paths. To discover for yourself the benefits you will receive from a fresh start with a newly built home, visit www.freshstartbuildnew.com. Submitted by the Regina & Region Home Builders’ Association

Warranty The brand name products in a truly new home are covered by a manufacturer’s warranty, sometimes for up to 10 years. And, if something should go wrong with your new home and it was constructed by an RRHBA member, your new home itself is covered by a third-party new home warranty. This provides protection against defects in work or materials and against any structural defects, providing the peace of mind that you just won’t get with a used home. Safety With a truly new home, you have the reassurance that your home is built with the most up-to-date safety features such as smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors that are hard-wired for the protection of you and your family. Unlike most existing homes, new homes come with modern fire retardants in materials such as carpeting and insulation.

antone announced Marsala, a robust and earthy wine red hue, as its 2015 colour of the year. Sherwin-Williams selected Coral Reef, a mix of pink, orange and red that channels floral components for an airy, springtime feel. There are three hot colour themes for 2015: Renaissance, pastel and bright retro. In addition to the paint company’s choices, these colour palettes are worth considering, too, whether it’s for paint, fabric or furnishings. Warmer and muddier colours, like you would see in an old Renaissance painting, include olive green, rust, plum, and beiges, and they complement Marsala as good accent colours, said Texas-based designer Leslie Hendrix Wood, owner of Leslie Hendrix Wood Interiors and her blog hadleycourt.com. For a Renaissance colour, she suggests Behr’s Your Majesty, which pairs well with Behr’s Essential Teal. Designers and style spotters also have been watching blues, from coastal blue to navy and even blue-black tones, said Kerrie Kelly, author, interior designer and owner of Kerrie Kelly Design Lab in Northern California. Navy doesn’t just work on the walls — it’s being used in countertops and cabinetry, she said. It can stand alone to create an air of sophistication or drama, or blend with brighter hues, metals and fabrics. “Navy blue is a hot one for us, especially when it’s paired with Marsala or Coral Reef,” she said. “Navy blue is such a classic, it really feathers into any interior.” Designers also are seeing a lot of gray and more black. But Kelly likes navy so well that she predicts it will be the colour of the decade. “There’s kind of an evolving movement towards black,” she said. “Navy blue can transition us there.” Kelly also predicts tones of blue azure and coastal blue will be hot. Think saturated, beach-y

colours — the deep blue sky on a clear day or the jewel-toned waters of the Caribbean. She also recommends olive green, pink peony or coral. “We’re looking for a little light and a little playfulness in our palettes,” she said. Besides renewed consumer confidence, architect and designer Rose Dostal of RMD Designs, LLC, attributes the brighter colours to an aging population and believes they will stay around. Dostal also saw a lot of blues at the Las Vegas Market and said orange is another colour that keeps coming back. “Our eyes have to deal with all these issues, we need cognitive stimulation,” she said. “I’m one of the baby boomers and I tend to gravitate towards brighter colours or high contrast like black and white.” On the other end of the spectrum, there are cooler tones — very soft pastels that are barely there. Pale and luminous, these are calming and quiet colours that take inspiration from spring and natural-healing botanicals. Wood likes Benjamin Moore’s Pink Blush, which goes well with cool colours like SherwinWilliams’ Moody Blue and White Hyacinth. Finally, bright, bold colours reflective of retro 1960s shades and saturated pastels will come on the scene. For a fun and funky look, Wood likes SherwinWilliams’ bold Nifty Turquoise with Behr’s Graphic Grape and Super Hero. “You can bring in pops of colour in pillows for your patio, or in a game room, you could put one bold accent colour on a wall,” she said. “In each of the three categories, use one of those colours as your starting point. It’s easier to select your fabrics and furnishings and then pick your paint last.” For those with more conservative tastes, Kelly recommends adding colour with simple accessories or painting a side table first. “See how you truly feel about it, and add on layers as you get more comfortable with the look and with the tones,” she said. “Don’t be afraid of testing it out and switching up your decorating; it provides a fresh start your interior.” © CTW Features

Blue is the new black: Nearly every shade of blue is in style this year, from the darker Essential Teal to the lighter Crystal Clear, pictured at right.

Taste of India: Marsala red is hot, and it blends well with other bold colours, including dark shades of blue — another must-have for 2015. Colour of the year: Sherwin-Williams chose Coral Reef, above, as the top colour for 2015.

Oh, What a Colourful World!

Marsala and coral reef might be the ‘it’ colours for the year, but when it comes to buying furniture, accessories, appliances and paint, Renaissance, pastel and bright retro are all the rage, too. By Marla R. Miller CTW Features

antone announced Marsala, a robust and earthy wine red hue, as its 2015 colour of the year.
