PHIL HEATH CLASSIC 2013 REVIEW

By Ryan Ellison

On Saturday March 16th 2013- 4,442 enthusiastic spectators flocked to The Bayou Music Center in Houston, TX around 5:30 pm. I’m sure this set some kind of attendance record for a Texas show’s first year, but when Phil Heath A.K.A “The Gift” is around the possibilities are endless. After waiting 30 minutes in the ticket line I made my entrance. The halls of The Bayou Music center were lined with supplement and clothing line vendors. The venue was the perfect size for the 332 competitors and 4,442 spectators in attendance. That in itself made the show a more pleasurable experience. For someone who had never been to Houston before, I was apprehensive about going to a show in the downtown area. It turned out that The Bayou Music Center was very easy to find. As for the Downtown area, I loved it. While walking from the parking garage, I couldn’t help but be amazed at the kind of restaurants and night clubs that Houston has to offer. I have no doubt many of the competitors took advantage of these venues after the show. Lee Thompson Promoter and Texas NPC Chairman promoted a well organized and entertaining show. The best part had to be Phil Heath guest posing, which is not to often you get to see a two time Mr. Olympia winner. Guest posing, and not only that he gave a lucky fan tickets to see him compete and most likely win his 3rd straight Mr. Olympia title. Many outsiders to the bodybuilding world always look at bodybuilding as full of negative self-centered individuals. In the case of Phil Heath, they’re dead wrong. I have never met a more genuinely kind hearted person. So, don’t judge a book by its cover. You may be surprised at what you find inside. This was first of many Phil Heath Classics. I can only imagine what’s in store for next year’s show, especially if Phil Heath is a 3 time Mr. Olympia winner.

ARNOLD CLASSIC WOMEN REVIEW By: Greg McCoy

What a great weekend in Columbus Ohio for the 25th anniversary Arnold Sport Festival. With a weekend PACKED full of great athletes and fan experiences the women of the Arnold Classic did not disappoint. Women’s physique sports have grown so much and are incredibly competitive. The level of talent on the stage in Columbus was absolutely outstanding and a real treat for the fans and enthusiasts to watch. If you weren’t able to attend let’s break down each division!

Let’s start with Women’s Bodybuilding! There was a LOT of muscle on stage this year, women’s bodybuilding is a tough sport for newcomers to crack into because of the time it takes to gain the size these champions carry. So it seems once the top tier is defined they like to stay there for a while. Iris Kyle took home her 7th Arnold Classic victory this year. She takes the female body to an extreme development in size, symmetry, and conditioning. She was definitely the undisputed champion of the weekend. Second Place was awarded to Yaxeni Oriquen in a somewhat controversial decision. Yaxeni has won this contest 5 times in her career and she was in top form in Columbus. Many thought Debi Laszewski would take the second place spot but Debi placed third displaying some of the most crips conditioning on stage. Brigita Brezovac moved up a few spots from her 6th place finish last year placing 4th this year, and Cathy Lefrancois placed 5th this year. www.posedownmag.com

Ms. Figure International may have hosted the biggest upset of the weekend with Candice Keene beating Erin Stern who seemed to be the heir to the throne coming into the show. Candice brought her best package to date and won out in an incredibly tough lineup of figure champions. Heather Dees took the runner up spot with her great symmetry and overall eye-pleasing shape. Erin Stern, who many thought would leave with a victory this weekend came in a disappointing third place for her. The only critique I can make is that she seemed to have been a little smaller than when she took home the Olympia title and it seemed to have impacted her rank in a negative way. Candice Lewis placed 4th and look great as always, she has one of the best v-tapers in the game. And Mallory Haldeman rounded out our top 5 with a great showing, earning her another big time top 5 finish in the last 12 months. Ms. Fitness International is always an energy packed show and Tanji Johnson brought the house down with her Janet Jackson themed routine but it was her physique that proved to be the difference maker on the score cards. Tanji won her title with a true total package performance. Coming in second was fan favorite Oksana Grishina, who had a joker themed routine that left the audience in amazement. Bethany Cisternino earned third place with what was in my opinion the most balanced physique in the contest and her cheerleading routine was fun for the audience. Trish Warren placed 4th place in Columbus proving she belongs back in the top ranks, and Regiane Da Silva took home the number five spot which was a big jump from her, coming from 12th last year. In just it’s third year in existence the Ms. Bikini International is growing in momentum every year bringing in a lot of hype to this year’s show. India Paulino was last year’s runner up took home the title this time around. Nathalia Melo, reigning miss bikini Olympia. made a big jump from her last appearance at the Arnold where she was 5th place, took home the runner up spot this time around. Nicole Nagrani, who has won an Arnold Classic title before treaded water this year remaining in third place where she had placed last year. Yeshaira Robles and Jessica Paxson rounded out the top 5. All in all it was a great weekend for women’s physique sports in Columbus, Ohio, and the stage is set for a great 2013!

GUY GRUNDY Australia’s own Guy Grundy has teamed up with Russian Fitness Champion & Celebrity Sasha Brown in the US to produce “Couples Training” It is a system of training which utilizes a woman’s and a mans strength’s as training partner’s! The system has produced spectacular results in the US & Russia. The Couples Training system has now reached Down Under! “I am not surprised how Successful this system has been! I have trained many woman as a professional trainer & I have always been amazed at their level of dedication combined with ability to learn at an rapid rate” Guy Grundy

Guy Grundy I am know to be a physical type of guy & a hard trainer! I pride my self on my work ethic in the gym & out side the gym! I have trained with a who’s who of athlete’s from Rugby Player’s, Bodybuilders & Professional fighter’s to name a few! I am ALWAYS looking to take my training to the next level! I have always said that Sasha must could be my sister as we are into the same thing’s & have similar interest! I have known of Sasha for a while & she is well known in the Fitness & MMA industries as one of the most dedicated and hard training woman in either sport! We teamed up for a workout together & I will be honest and say I was thinking I would just lay back & go easy, as no woman is going to train like me. Over the next 2 hours I was pushed like never before as we did an hour of weights followed by an hour of Muay! What really stood out to be with Sasha was how she seemed to get stronger and stronger as the workout progressed. I was talking to God a few times while we trained I was saying “ God Please make this end, Why are you doing this to me” All jokes side Sasha really pushed me to to maintain her pace which is Awesome for me in a training sense. Not many men at my weight of 229lbs can keep up with me on the cardio and I tend to burn the out as the workout progressed but Sasha’s endurance and stamina where something I wasn’t expecting and I had to really push my self to maintain that pace!

After that workout I had a new found respect for Sasha but also for woman in General! Sasha just picked u her bags and walked out of the gym like it was just another day at the office! I hung back and when i knew she had gone I walked to the corner of the MMA area and just dropped to the floor & I did some thinking. I was really surprised how mentally and physically strong Sasha was, this was the only time i have ever trained with a woman at that level! I realized woman give birth to children and they have shown that woman have a higher pain thresh hold than a man and due to their size they are faster more agile which is something I really benefited from during our workout.

Sasha & I became regular workout partners and as we went along another benefit came up which was that woman learn things really quick. they have a good rhythm and seem to learn the mechanics quicker than a man and they also have a very patient way of explaining things which really helps me with the learning process! I am proud to be associated with the Queen of Russian Fitness and soon to be WORLD Fitness Miss Sasha Brown with new concept of Couples Training!

SASHA BROWN Sometimes you trying so hard to get regular workouts and make healthy food choices, but if you don’t have like-minded friends, this can be pretty tough. Working out by yourself can be pretty difficult, so sometimes finding a workout partner to maximize your program can be very good idea. For many years I could do my workouts by myself, but once in a while I need somebody who can push my limits and break a plateau in my workout regimen. I feel lucky to find such a “butt kicking” workout buddy – Guy Grandy! What I am getting from my workouts with Guy: 1. Extra motivation. Yes, sometimes I don’t want to workout too (nobody is perfect!). By scheduling workout with my partner, I feel like it is very important meeting that I can’t miss. 2. Spotter. Everybody knows: No pain – no gain!!! Yes, you have to lift heavy to grow muscles. Sometimes it is more mentally than physically that I can’t lift more weight. By working out with workout buddy I feel like I have physical and emotional support. 3. Variety. Working out with a partner can bring more variety to my workout routing. There are a lot of good exercises that you can do with your partner. 4. Competitive mode. Yes, sometimes by seeing somebody lifting heavier or doing more reps can bring out my competitive personality. Guy Grundy www.GuyGrundy.com Fitness Celebrity/Actor

Sasha Anna Brown – International Fitness Model and Life Coach 1507 7th Street #492, Santa Monica, CA 90401 Phone: 310.740.0309 • Fax: 310.861.5037 • E-mail: sashabrown07@yahoo.com January 27, 2004 My name is Sasha Anna Brown. Originally from Ukraine. I moved to America in 2005 to further my career as a model and personal trainer. I love my hometown, but there are so many great opportunities in Los Angeles for me. I have two older sisters. I was my fathers last hope to have a son, so maybe that’s why I am such a tomboy (love fighting and heavy lifting ), but I also have a very feminine side to me. 10 years ago, when I was back in Ukraine, I saw Monica Brant on the cover of Oxygen Magazine. I was amazed! I said to myself, one day I will meet her and my pictures will also be in Oxygen! My Ukrainian friends were laughing at me, saying that I am just crazy and would never get it!!! I believed in myself and my abilities and I achieved my goals! I sent copies of my picture with Monica and Oxygen to all my friends in Ukraine! I proved that if you want something, set it as your goal and keep moving toward it! Never give up! I attended Monica’s fitness camp in 2007 and I met Kim Oddo, who helped me with my nutrition and training. After completing “Transformation program” and seeing how my body has changed I decided to go further and compete in my first figure competition. Never in my life I did not think about being on a stage in tiny-tiny bikini. No way! And I did it! It was the best expiries in my life. I took 1st place and overall in my second show! All my hard work finally paid off! I did 18 competitions so far and from each of them I have learned a lot. All my life everybody was telling me that I am not strong enough, not pretty enough, not good enough! One day one of my really good friend helped me to overcome this “not good enough” image. She said, “You have to do it. You have got to prove it to yourself. For first time in my life, I felt like someone believed in me. It gave me the strength to believe in myself.” I was working my butt off at the gym every day, twice and sometimes three times a day! One of the biggest challenges was getting family, my friends and co-workers to understand why I chose not to eat birthday cake and pizza at parties. And why instead of going out and staying awake till next day, I would go sleep earlier so I can get up at 4.30 am and do my cardio. My friend and co-workers called me crazy. Because for me it is not just a diet and workouts, it is my lifestyle and I love it! Being on that stage and holding my first place trophy gave me so much power. I understood, if you really want something go for it! Put that goal and go. Believe in yourself and you will succeed. Because of my accomplishments, I am more outgoing, adventurous and confident. Today, I share my knowledge with others as a training and nutritional coach. • • • • • Stats • • • • • •

Exercise: leg press Areas worked by the exercise: Quads Execution: Place the backrest at 45 degrees. Sit in the leg press with your back firmly placed against the backrest, remove the safety pins and slowly lower the weight until your knees are close to your upper chest area. Hold at the bottom of the movement for a second or two and then drive the machine back to the start position. Then repeat the movement. Different foot positions on the footplate will allow you to hit different parts of the thighs. The closer your feet are together, the more the outer quads will be trained. The further apart they are, the more the inner quads will be worked. The higher your feet, the more the hamstrings and glutes will be trained. And the lower your feet, the more the quads are being hit. Remember: Don’t bounce or use momentum to move the weight up and down while doing this exercise. Always use the safety racks when racking the weights at the end of the set. The slower the movement is done the more muscle fibers you utilize, which will enable you to achieve the best results from the exercise. Doing the exercise fast, with jerky form will result in decreased muscular growth and strength. You will also put yourself at greater risk of injury. A good formula to use when lifting weights is to take two seconds to move the weight to the finish position, pause for one to two seconds, and then take three seconds to bring the weight back to the start position. Tips: - Exhale as you press the leg press upward and away from your body, inhale as you lower the weight to your body. - If you find that your lower back is lifting up away from the bench, you are going too deep on the movement. Avoid this as it places stress on the lower back. - Do not wear a belt on this exercise. Guy Grundy www.GuyGrundy.com Fitness Celebrity/Actor
