Bathed by the Mondego River, Coimbra enjoys a wonderful view over the river and its plains, since it is located on a hill. Visit the Sé Velha (Old Cathedral built in Romanesque style, dating back from the 2nd half of the 12th century which main doorway shows obvious Islamic influence, while the side door, known as the ‘Porta Especiosa’ (Beautiful Door), has elegant Renaissance decoration. Visit the Machado de Castro Museum a former Bishop’s Palace built on top of the foundation of the forum of the Roman city of Aeminium and housing important collections displaying the wealth of the Church and the importance of royal patronage. Its architectural spaces were recently refurbished and expanded and it is now possible to visit one of the most remarkable works of Roman architecture in Portugal, the cryptoporticus. Visit the Bissaya Barreto House Museum home to a collection of Portuguese tiles, porcelain from the Companhia das Índias and contemporary Portuguese paintings.

Go to Fado ao Centro, a Club opened from Monday to Sunday (10am to 7pm) located in the historic centre of town at Rua Quebra Costas. Entrance to the photo exhibition about Coimbra´s Fado is free. Fado shows take place every day at this Club and the purchase of a ticket is required.

The café Praia da Luz is a favorite and also recommend for a drink at night. At the end of the promenade you will reach Castelo do Queijo, a fortress dating from 1661.

Visit the Condes Castro Guimarães Museum a small palace commissioned to Luigi Manini in 1900 by George O ‘ Neil, a descendant of the King of Ireland. The most valuable exhibit is a valuable illustrated book by Duarte Galvão, Chronicle of the king Dom Afonso Henriques, dating from 1505, with a coloured print depicting 16th century Lisbon. The garden of the museum houses a small zoo. Visit Queluz National Palace, located at Queluz in the outskirts of Lisbon and one of the last great rococo buildings to be designed in Europe. The architect was Mateus Vicente de Oliveira, who had trained under Ludovice of Ratisbon and Jean Baptiste Robillon during the construction of another royal palace, Mafra. This palace, with its single-story flanking wings has ostentatious and extravagant interiors, namely the Ballroom and the Hall of Ambassadors.

Visit the Convent of Santa Clara-a-Velha, design by architect Domingos Domingues, who worked previously in the Monastery of Alcobaça. Each nave is divided in seven arches which curbed ribbed vaults are signs of Roman influence. The church was inaugurated in 1330 and one year later, in 1331, the Mondego river waters flooded the Monastery initiating the progressive sinking of the buildings into the muddy soil. The cathedral is called 'old' because in the 18th century the role of 'cathedral' was given to a 16th century church called Sé Nova (New Cathedral). Visit the Santa Cruz Monastery and church built in Romanesque style designed by the French master builder Robert. Main highlights are the vaulting in Manueline style, attributed to Boitaca, and the throne, dating from 1513 and crowned with decoration alluding to the Portuguese discoveries. Walk in the Botanical Gardens created in 1772 and part of the Museum of Natural History covering about 13.5 hectares of pathways, greenhouses, lakes, statues, woods and gardens arranged in three terraces forming an amphitheatre. There are in excess of 1,200 species, some of which rare and exotic, taking visitors on a true journey through the world of flora. Visit the Baroque style Church of Santo António dos Olivais built in the 18th century with a single nave lined with 18th century blue and white tiles depicting the life of the Saint Anthony. Drive to Conímbriga to visit the Roman ruins one of the largest Roman settlements in Portugal with some of the earliest layers dating back to the first Iron Age in the 9th Century B.C. The Romans arrived in the 2nd Century A.D., and the city walls are largely intact as well as the mosaic floors and foundations of many houses and public buildings. In the public baths, you can view the network of stone heating ducts beneath the now-missing floors. Archaeologists estimate that only 10 per cent of the city has been excavated. The site also houses a museum displaying objects found by archaeologists.

Visit the Convent of Santa Clara-a-Velha, design by architect Domingos Domingues, who worked previously in the Monastery of Alcobaça. The architecture style combines Roman and Gothic, and the church is composed by three naves of similar height, without transept. Each nave is divided in seven arches which curbed ribbed vaults are signs of Roman influence. The church inaugurated in 1330 saw one year later, in 1331, the rising of Mondego river waters which flooded the Monastery site, initiating the progressive sinking of the buildings into the muddy soil. Today, church ceiling seems to be too low and the height to length ratio unbalanced, because, half the height stands below the floor plan, buried in the swamp.
Visit the Santa Cruz Monastery and Church built in Romanesque style which main highlights are the vaulting in Manueline style, attributed to Boitaca, and the throne, dating from 1513 and crowned with decoration alluding to the Portuguese discoveries. Visit the National Pantheon a pretty domed church and burial site of many of Portugal’s most prominent figures, ranging from Presidents of the Republic to artists. Visit the Church of São Vicente de Fora located in a lovely old part of Lisboa, considered to be one of the most important monuments of Lisbon built between 1582 and 1629. The naves are divided in seven arches which curbed ribbed vaults are signs of Roman influence. The church was inaugurated in 1330. One year later, in 1331 the Mondego river waters flooded the Monastery site, initiating the progressive sinking of the building into the muddy soil. Today, if the church ceiling seems to be too low and the height to length ratio unbalanced, it is because, half the height stands below the floor plan, flooded in the swamp.

The building promotes an interesting relationship between interior and exterior: several glazed surfaces allow views from and to the inside of the building. The main concert hall located at the core of the building has outstanding acoustic and is bathed in daylight from the two walls made entirely of glass, an oddity in the music world as glass scatters sound in random directions. This problem was solved by making the glass ripple in tightly curved folds, and setting two glass sheets a metre apart to insulate the hall from exterior noise.
