Healthy and safe summer fun Looking for ways to keep the kids entertained thissummer?Therearelotsoffreeoptionsin thecitywhichwilltirethemout. There’sthe seafrontandSouthseaCommon, theskatepark, HilseaBMXtrack, splashpoolsandourparks. Or why not visit one of our six adventure playgrounds? They have lots of different activities on offer and each one hosts a play festival during the summer holidays. Search adventure playgrounds at www.portsmouth.gov.uk for more. Here are some tips to make sure your family’s fun is safe and healthy:

f Ice-creams and fizzy drinks are part of summer, but too much sugar is really bad for our health, especially for children. Change4Life have advice on cutting back on sugar by making a few simple

swaps. Find out more, and use their sugar calculator to see how much you’re having each day, at www.nhs.uk/change4life

f Summer’s also a great time to live by the sea, but you need to be sensible in the water to keep yourself safe. For good advice on how to paddle safely go to www.rlss.org.uk/summer-water-safety f To help children get confident in the water, three city pools offer free swimming to under-12s living in Portsmouth. This is during term times, including weekends. Search free swimming at www.portsmouth.gov.uk

f And don’t forget that when the sun’s out, suncream is essential. Search heatwave on nhs.uk for more advice on keeping your family safe and well during hot weather.

What a great run! TheSimplyhealthGreatSouthRunisback on20October – the30th time the event has been staged.

It’s grown from 2,000 runners in 1990 to more than 20,000, and is now the world’s leading 10-mile event. Over the years, up to 400,000 people have crossed the finish line.

An economic impact study showed it gave an annual boost to the city of £3.2m. And last year, more than £2.5 million was raised for good causes by charity runners. The main run is now part of a packed weekend of sport, which also includes the Simplyhealth Great South 5k and the Simplyhealth Junior and Mini Great South Runs. To enter one of the events and to find out more, go to greatrun.org/south

Is your child well enough for school?

The competition is part of our celebrations of the 825th anniversary of Portsmouth’s first royal charter. Call 023 9268 8046 for terms and conditions.

It’svitalthatchildrengotoschoolregularly, sotheydon’t miss out or fall behind. And although illness is a major reasonforchildrenbeingabsent, notallillnessesneed timeoffschool. Here’s a guide from NHS Wessex Healthier Together to help you decide what’s right. There’s more advice at what0-18.nhs.uk

If absence is unavoidable, it’s very important to tell your school as soon as possible on the first day, letting them know the reason, so the absence is authorised. Illness

An extension of the city centre market, it offers lots of delicious dishes with an international flavour. Help us keep brothers and sisters together More and more children are coming into care with their brothers or sisters.

We strive to keep them together, because splitting them up can be devastating and adds to the trauma they experience. That’s why we need foster carers to come forward and offer loving homes to siblings of all ages.

The biggest barrier in keeping siblings together is finding foster carers with the space to take them in. Siblings of the same sex may be able to share a bedroom, but usually they will need their own room. While space is crucial, it doesn’t matter whether you rent or own your home. And while some people foster as a career, others combine it with a job or choose to be a stay-at-home carer. There are many fostering options available. If you’re interested then please contact us to find out more about the wonderful benefits of being a foster carer. You can call us on 023 9283 4071. For more information go to foster.portsmouth.gov.uk

Meet Grace and Rosie* Sisters Grace, five, and Rosie, four, have been waiting to find a loving home with foster carers.

They enjoy playing, singing, dancing and caring for animals. Grace is shy, while Rosie is energetic and bubbly, and just adores her big sister. Both the girls are enjoying school and are making new friends. Rosie says: “I love Peppa Pig, playing with my sister, and spaghetti bolognese with lots of cheese!” *Names changed to protect identity

Public remembrance a Theeyesoftheworldwillbe on Portsmouth next month when Britain marks 75 years since the D-Day landings.

Our city is the natural place for nations to gather to remember the giant military operation to invade occupied France and liberate western Europe.

The decision to start the invasion was made at Southwick House, just north of Portsmouth, and from 6 June 1944 thousands of troops embarked at sites including South Parade Pier, the Camber, the Harbour Station and what is now Portsmouth International Port. Much of the important equipment for D-Day was designed or built here, including the Horsa glider, Mulberry harbour components and landing craft.

Local hospitals treated wounded troops and many men are buried locally.

This is why veterans and invited guests, including overseas heads of state, will gather on Southsea Common for a major official commemoration on 5 June. The council will then host a series of free events, including a remembrance service at the D-Day Stone on 6 June and the Portsmouth Revival festival on the weekend of 8–9 June. Forafulleventslistseethebackpage.

Arthur’s story Arthur Bailey, 95, from Cosham, features on our cover as a young soldier. Now a volunteer at the D-Day Story, he vividly recalls landing on Gold Beach on D-Day. “I heard: ‘Ramps down, everybody off!’ I remember rushing down the ramp and then all these guns opened up. The Germans had loads of snipers everywhere. There was a fellow shouting: ‘Get off the beach and take cover!’ I kept running, and when I got near the top of the beach I came across a German slit trench and I jumped into that. I think it saved me. I survived everything just by sheer luck. I had lots and lots of near misses. “It was a long time ago, but it comes back to you. I don’t think I will ever forget it, ever.” He is clear why next month’s commemoration is vital. “Everybody has got to over 90 now and it’s so important… because looking at it today, we saved the world.” 18

D-Day Story

Troops marching to South Parade Pier for embarkation to Normandy

The D-Day Story, completely transformed and re-opened last year, tells the story of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy, using authentic objects and the personal stories of the people who were there. Check theddaystory.com for opening times and full details of museum events (also on pages 4 – 12).

Normandy Memorial Wall The Portsmouth D-Day Museum Trust, which supports the work of the D-Day Story, is inviting people to sponsor bricks or plaques for a memorial wall, recording those who took part in D-Day, regardless of nationality or arm of service. Find out more at www.ddaytrust.co.uk

Fantastic fireworks Gunwharf Quays will be supporting the commemorations with a spectacular fireworks display on Saturday at 10pm, set off from the water near Southsea Common. Spectactors will be able to enjoy a stunning 15-minute display, designed especially for the event, set to a nostalgic soundtrack.

▲ We’ve put up a plaque to honour each of the 119 Portsmouth servicemen who died between D-Day and the liberation of France. The plaques are in the streets where the men lived. The youngest was Pte Robert Johns, of Stamshaw (pictured), killed aged 16.

Travel, roads and parking There will be road closures and parking restrictions around the events, particularly on 5 June, and access to parts of Southsea Common will be restricted. It’s best to get to the events by walking, cycling or using public transport, or using the special park and ride at King George V playing fields in Cosham.

See www.portsmouth.gov.uk/d-day75 for more information on getting around the city, which will be open for business as usual.

Cough, cough... We can all do our bit to make the air we breathe cleaner. One important way to help is by switching off your engine when you’re not moving.

Leaving your engine running unnecessarily, when you’re stationary, is called idling – and it’s illegal. It also wastes fuel and is bad for the environment and our health.

Idling pumps harmful exhaust fumes into the air that people nearby have to breathe. Fumes become trapped in your car, so you breathe them in too. Over a lifetime, these fumes are as dangerous as smoking and are linked to asthma, allergies, heart and lung disease and cancer.

Children are also more at risk because their lungs are still developing. So it’s especially important that you switch off when you’re near a school.

Idling: busting the myths Myth: Idling won’t make a difference to air quality. Busted! Everyone who switches off when stationary, for a minute or more, is helping to reduce harmful emissions entering the air we breathe. Myth: Idling is no different to driving down the road. Busted! An idling engine can produce up to twice the emissions of a moving car. Idling creates more emissions than driving because the engine is not running efficiently. It also wastes fuel and money. Myth: Starting an engine uses more fuel than idling. Busted! For most engines, idling for more than 10 seconds uses more fuel than starting the motor.

Building for the future of our city

Major schemes are taking shape to protect ourcommunity, provide newhomes, investin schools and give the city centre a boost.

New council homes We’re building hundreds of new council homes. These high-quality, energy-efficient flats and houses will ease waiting lists and generate rental income.

Nearly 150 families have already moved into the homes we’ve built in the last year and work has started on 23 one-and-two bedroom flats on the old Southsea Community Centre site in Kings Street. We also have plans to build homes on the following sites, as well as on council-owned land in Havant. f Brewery House, Hambrook Street

f the former records office site, Museum Road f an office and retail site in Arundel Street

f land cleared after the demolition of Northern Parade Clinic, Doyle Avenue Schemes are subject to public consultation and planning permission.

To find out more call the housing development team on 023 9283 4954. 22

More school places Portsmouth schools are set for a boost of £8.5m from the council, needed to meet the expected demand for new places by 2023. The funding, for special schools and mainstream schools, is on top of money for nearly 1,000 additional places at sites including Admiral Lord Nelson School, the Portsmouth Academy and Charter Academy. We’re now studying where the new funding can best be spent.

We’re also contributing £650,000 to funds secured by St Edmund’s Catholic School and Portsmouth Roman Catholic Diocese for another 80 places there.

Artist’s impression of proposed new defences near the Pyramids Centre.

City centre plans We’re working on plans to breathe new life into the city centre.

The main focus of the plan is the council-owned site of the former Tricorn Centre. Specialist property investment and development advisory firm Delancey, whose client fund are long-term lease holders of the site, will be working with us to reinvigorate this part of the city centre.

Developing this site with a mix of homes, business space and leisure facilities has the potential to be a catalyst for further regeneration in the wider city centre. Possibilities would be reviewed for future uses of the area between Cascades Shopping Centre, Portsmouth Naval Base and Sainsbury’s. A big part of our plan is to find new uses for the site ahead of development. This could see temporary structures brought in to transform it from a car park into a mix of culture, business, retail and leisure facilities, revitalising the area.

Flood defences Thanks to everyone who took part in the final consultation on the Southsea Coastal Scheme, which will reduce the flood risk to more than 8,000 homes and over 700 businesses. The consultation, in February, used exhibitions to outline changes to the design proposals based on feedback from the local community. Almost 600 residents attended the events and provided their views on the final designs.

The next step will involve submitting an application for planning permission. The scheme stretches for 4.5km from Old Portsmouth to Eastney. For more information go to www.southseacoastalscheme.org.uk

The next stage of work on the North Portsea Island Coastal Flood Defences Scheme has been submitted for planning permission. If approved, work on the Kendall’s Wharf section of the defences could begin this September, with a view to being completed by the end of summer 2020. The defences will tie in with the work carried out at Anchorage Park in 2016.

Sue Eden-Browne, left, and Kate Large welcome visitors to the Hive

The Hive: buzzing with ideas to help you There’sanewone-stop-shopintownthatcanhelpyou findthesupportyouneedwithlife’supsanddowns. The Hive in Central Library can put you in touch with support services for mental health issues, debt, loneliness, long-term health conditions and lots of other things.

One local person the Hive team helped recently was Mrs A. She came into the Hive with money worries after the death of her husband. She had three young children and was struggling to make ends meet. The Hive team helped her contact the housing benefits office at the council and she agreed to come back a few weeks later for another chat. It was at this meeting that she told the team she would like to get a job, but needed to improve her employability.

They found her some courses to do. They also found a bereavement group she could join, and some activities she and the children could enjoy together.

The Hive brings together council, health and voluntary services, to help Portsmouth people. More information:

The Care and Health Information Exchange (CHIE) is a secure system which shares health and social care information from GP surgeries, hospitals, community and mental health, social services and others. CHIE helps professionals across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight and surrounding areas provide safer and faster treatment for you and your family. @CHIEnews Your information is also used to improve future care for you, your family and for other patients. This helps plan NHS services and supports medical research. To keep your information safe it is moved to a separate database called ‘Care and Health Information Analytics’ (CHIA) and changed so that it cannot be used to identify you. Your data is never shared for the benefit of commercial companies like drug manufacturers. People who analyse data on CHIA do not have access to CHIE, so cannot identify you. You have the right to opt out of having your data on CHIE for your care or CHIA for health planning and research. Make a difference as a school governor Could you help children in Portsmouth by becoming a school governor?

Being a governor is challenging but hugely rewarding. It’s a chance to make a real difference to young people, give something back to your local community Guy Cordran and use and develop your skills.

You don’t need to be a parent, and you don’t need a detailed understanding of the education system. What schools do need are people with an interest, relevant skills, and the time to make a contribution. We’re particularly looking for people with experience in finance, human resources, the law, marketing, buildings and property or organisational change.

Governors usually attend six to 12 meetings a year, as well as making school visits and spending time on background reading and training. Many employers offer the flexibility you may need.

Guy Cordran, a governor at Wimborne Junior School in Southsea, first volunteered more than 12 years ago.

He says: “I’ve enjoyed an interesting and fulfilling career at IBM for the last 25 years, and I’ve been able to bring many of my business skills and experiences to the role of governor. “Being a school governor has been one of the most fulfilling roles I’ve done. Every year I know I’m directly influencing the experiences and life chances of over 300 young people

“I’ve had new experiences, developed new skills, met new people and taken on challenges far removed from my day job. It’s definitely worth it and the school is genuinely appreciative.” To see vacancies for governors, search the keyword governor at volunteer.portsmouth.gov.uk or email schoolgovernor@portsmouthcc.gov.uk to register your interest.

How we can all Thenewwheeliebinwastecollectionschemeis reducing waste and increasing recycling. Waste collected each month has fallen by an average of300tonnes,and15moretonnesofrecycling is being collected. Well done! Now, here’s how to reduce your waste and boost your recycling even more…

Gardenwaste – You can take woody garden waste less than 10cm in diameter to the Port Solent centre, or try composting. Or join the Green Waste Club at www.greenwasteclub.co.uk for fortnightly collections. Don’tforgetaerosols – Empty aerosols go in your recycling, not in your black bin/bag.

Recyclingbanks – There are more than 100 banks for items which can’t be collected from home, such as glass, clothes, books, DVDs, and cartons/Tetra Paks. Find your nearest at www.portsmouth.gov.uk/recycling Unwanted/broken electrical items – If they fit into a carrier bag, pop them on the lid of your recycling bin on collection day.

Bulkystuff – We can’t pick up things like furniture and large electrical items as part of your weekly collection. Take them to the Port Solent centre or use a local buy-and-sell website. Or you can book a bulky waste collection from £30. There are 25 weekly slots available free to residents who get council tax support. Call 023 9284 1105.

Food waste trial This summer, households in parts of Drayton, Somerstown, Old Portsmouth, Portsea, Southsea, Eastney and Baffins will get a small food waste kitchen caddy, to empty into a larger one outside for weekly collection.

Household waste and recycling centre Open seven days a week, 9am – 6pm, at Port Solent. It’s less busy during the week and at the beginning or end of the day.

Get muscle and joint help – fast GPsurgeriesacrossthecityareofferinga new service to speed up access to specialist physiotherapy support.

The First Contact Physio service puts people with a range of muscle and joint complaints directly in touch with a physiotherapist. When you call your GP with knee, elbow, hip, neck or back problems, you’ll be offered a chat on the phone with a physiotherapist instead. You’ll be given advice on how to speed up your recovery, exercises to do to prevent it happening again, or a referral to a specialist service. Muscle or joint pain is a reason for around 30% of all GP appointments. But a physiotherapist is usually able to guide patients on the best management for their symptoms. To find out more, speak to your GP practice or visit healthandcare.portsmouth.gov.uk/ firstcontactphysio

Everyone’s a winner ThePortsmouthLotterysupportslocal goodcauses,aswellasofferingprizes.

Smear tests save lives All women aged 25 – 64 should get a letter inviting them to attend a cervical screening (smear test). Women aged 25 – 49 are invited every three years and women 50 – 64 are invited every five years. This test detects abnormal cells in your cervix that may lead to cancer if not monitored or treated. Cervical screening saves about 5,000 lives a year so it’s really important that you book an appointment when you get your letter. For more information go to www.nhs. uk/cervicalscreening 30

Life after a stroke Exercise classes at Mountbatten Leisure Centre are helping people cope with illnesses including stroke. People like David Powell, from Fratton. Here’s his story.

David with fitness instructor Claire Warburton

Lessthanaweekafterreturningfromalovelyholiday,DavidandGill Powell were hit by tragedy.

One night in July 2017 Gill was suddenly woken by a noise, only to discover that David had fallen out of bed. Realising he was very poorly, she rang 999 and he was rushed to hospital. “The doctors were telling me I’d had a stroke,” says David, 75. “I remember saying: ‘No I haven’t.’ It was all so out of the blue.” The stroke caused irreparable damage. He lost vision in his left eye and the use of his left arm and leg. After four months in hospital and lots of care, including physiotherapy, he came home. His aftercare continued and although he still couldn’t move his arm and leg, his eyesight improved day by day.

Last May David joined BH Live’s stroke referral scheme at the Mountbatten Leisure Centre. With the help of staff, he does exercises designed to improve his quality of life. And gradually, his physical condition has improved.

“It can be tiring but I feel as though I’m gaining more strength each week,” he says. “Mountbatten has great facilities such as a pool-side hoist and accessible changing areas, and everyone is so positive and friendly. I really enjoy swimming, exercising, meeting new people and getting out of the house too.” Gill says: “It’s been great meeting people going through similar situations.”

If you’d like to join the stroke referral scheme or exercise referral scheme please ask your GP, consultant or nurse for a referral form. You’ll also receive discounted prices for selected classes. Life-saving support Sixnewdefibrillatorshavebeeninstalled aroundthecity.Usingadefibrillatoralongside CPRcandramaticallyincreasesomeone’s chancesiftheysufferasuddencardiacarrest. You don’t need to be nervous about using a defibrillator as it gives clear verbal instructions and it won’t deliver a shock if the person’s heart is beating or if the pads aren’t positioned correctly, so you can’t harm anyone.

When you dial 999 to report someone has collapsed, the operator will tell you where your nearest defibrillator is and give you a code to unlock it. This means they’re safe from tampering. The operator will stay on the phone to support you until help arrives. Download the South Central Ambulance Service Save a Life app to find out more and see where the defibrillators are.

Lighter energy bills We’venowfinishedupgradingstreetlightsin residentialroads.Wereplaced10,022lights withLEDones, andarenowreplacinglights on main roads. In the last financial year the new lights saved over a million kilowatts of energy and reduced carbon emissions by 30%. This means we’ve saved about £170,000 so far. Once the project is complete we hope to save about £400,000 a year. The new lights are more reliable too, and should last five times longer than the old ones, saving even more money.

The new LED lights have been designed to light footpaths and roads with a clearer white light. If you’re experiencing glare from a new light, please contact our city helpdesk on 023 9283 4092. We can easily resolve it by tilting the light or fitting a shield. Find out more at www.portsmouth.gov.uk/ streetlighting

Don’t be a parking danger Ifyou’reparkingonthestreet, please make sure you do so considerately and safely.

Always leave enough room for traffic to get through, including emergency vehicles, which are usually wider than cars. Someone’s life may depend on it. Vehicles obstructing the road can be reported to the police via the non-emergency number 101. For tips on parking, go to www.gov.uk/guidance/ the-highway-code and search waiting and parking. 34

Advertise with us If you want hundreds of thousands of people to see your business message, there’s no better way than to use the council’s publications, online services and advertising sites.

Jumping into the sea from walls or piers is called tombstoningforareason.Since2004,around20 peopleintheUKhavedieddoingit.

People who jump don’t know how shallow the water could be, or what’s under the water – like rocks. The shock of cold water may make it difficult to swim, and currents can sweep people away. Young children may also watch older ones and want to copy them. Please talk to your kids about the dangers of jumping into the sea.

Our community wardens and youth workers work to help keep young people safe. You can report incidents or concerns to the wardens on 0800 085 3840. If you’re concerned about a crime, call police on 101. If life is in danger, or in another emergency, call 999.
