From Friday 19 to Sunday 28 June, Portsmouth plays host to some of the summer’s most exciting arts and cultural experiences. We are delighted by the diversity of this year’s Portsmouth Festivities. From Beijing artists to battling organists, there is plenty for everyone, in venues across the city. We are thrilled to have commissioned the world premiere of a brand new, large-scale dance spectacular with Stopgap Dance Company. The Seafarers brings together professional and community dancers to tell the story of shipbuilding in Portsmouth through music and motion. The HMS Warrior will be making waves as we have an exciting night on the top deck of this amazing vessel featuring The Peatbog Faeries. We are privileged to welcome acclaimed author Andy Mulligan, National Poet of Wales Gillian Clarke and internationally renowned a cappella superstars The Swingle Singers – along with many more inspiring thinkers, creators and performers. Proceedings begin in style with the Festivities Gala Concert, A Summer Night’s Serenade with the London Mozart Players and Laura van der Heijden. 10 jam-packed days later, we round off this year’s Festivities with a celebration of singer-songwriters. We are hugely grateful to our sponsors, creative partners, partner venues, performers and volunteers for all their support. Thanks to you, too. By attending and enjoying these events, you play a vital part in supporting arts and culture in this great waterfront city.

James Priory, Festivities Chairman

YOUNG PEOPLE’S DEBATE

Purcell’s only fully sung opera, the hugely popular Dido and Aeneas recounts the love of Dido, Queen of Carthage, for the Trojan hero Aeneas, and her despair when he abandons her, enticed away by the deceit of the Sorceress and witches. It contains much of Purcell’s most beautiful music – arias, duets, choruses and dances - including the exquisite and heart-rending solo, “When I am laid in earth”, which precedes Dido’s untimely death.
