Ports Annual Pink Night Scheduled for August 17 By Margaret Sacchet

The Stockton Ports are once again partnering with St. Joseph’s Medical Center in support of their Breast Cancer Health Services. Over the past five seasons, the Ports have given their support to St. Joseph’s and have raised over $25,000 with help from the Stockton community. This year, the goal is to raise even more money and bring even more awareness to this cause. Prior to the Ports playing the San Jose Giants at 7:05 p.m. the third annual “Bombs-4-Bombs home-run-a-thon” will take place on the field at Banner Island Ballpark at 5:35 p.m. All are welcome to attend this event with the purchase of a ticket for that night’s game. The home run event was established in 2010 when then Ports manager Steve Scarsone was closely affected by the disease. Scarsone’s wife, Becki, was battling with breast cancer. She is now doing well and is cancer free. Ports staff and mascot Splash wearing the 2011 Pink Night jerseys that were later auctioned off

Q & A with A.J. Kirby-Jones By: Kinsey Eaton & Nicole Loscavio We sat down with A.J. Kirby Jones to talk to him about the first half of the season. A.J. told us about his improvements and also what he is looking forward to in the second half. A.J. also told us some things Stockton Ports fans might not now about him. Make sure you scan with your smart phone to see the full interview.

How would you say the first half of the season went? A.J.: It did not go as expected as far as a team stand point. We had a rough 16 game losing streak, but we finished out strong and are looking to bounce back in to second half. Where do you feel your game has improved this season? A.J.: Defensively I have gotten a lot better. Just hitting the ball better, I’ve gotten more patient this year. Drawing some more walks. What do you hope to take away from this season? A.J.: Improving on making the adjustments I need to make to get to a higher level. As far as hitting and fielding I hope to make the adjustments I need to make and move on up. What is something Ports fan should know about you? A.J.: I am quieter than most people think. You a currently tied for first in the league in walks, why do you think you draw so many walks? A.J.: I think it is just because I am patient; I don’t chase a lot of pitches usually. A lot of that is them trying to make good pitches, breaking balls – and I have been able to take them this year as opposed to last year when I swung at all of them.

Mid-Season Report with Webster Garrison By Nicole Loscavio Since the 2012 season is now more than half-way through, we decided to take this opportunity to sit down with Ports Manager Webster Garrison to reflect on the team, the play during the first half of the season, and discuss what’s in the future for the Boys of Banner Island. The Ports officially ended the first half of the season 28-42, heading into the All-Star Break 13.5 games back from the first place Bakersfield Blaze. There were a number of ups and downs for the Ports over the first three months of the season, but Webster Garrison summed it all up with one word – disappointing. “There’s no other way to put it. We came out of spring training feeling good, and we got off to a pretty good start, but then we ran into a bump in the road and we couldn’t turn it around in time. It went from one thing to the other and it just snowballed the wrong way,” Garrison said. “We had high expectations and we were looking for a good start – which we got; and we were looking to continue it, but we struggled a bit – pitching, offensively, and defensively. Overall guys worked hard and played hard, and now we have a slightly different personnel. We’re getting it done right now and we’re looking for a better second half.” The ‘slightly different personnel’ that Garrison and the rest of the coaching staff have to deal with is a very common aspect of minor league baseball. The coaches have to realize that their roster can change at any time for almost any reason, and sometimes even on a daily basis, as guys are being sent up and down through the Athletics organization. “If a guy does well, you expect him to move; if a guy doesn’t do as well, you expect him to move,” explains Garrison. “So the guys that are okay will be here all year, but there’s definitely going to be a number of moves coming in to the season, and you just try to get to know all of them and let it sink in to what you’re trying to do as a staff and as a team and hopefully they get on board and can ride with us.” There have been a number of guys who’ve come on board and stepped right up to contribute to the team – specifically the guys promoted to the Ports roster from the Low-A Burlington Bees: Chad Oberacker, Dusty Robinson, Sean Murphy, and Ryan Doolittle. “Those guys have been outstanding,” Garrison comments. “Oberacker’s definitely been a good shot in the arm for us – with his energy, his play out on the field, and his

12

offensive skills. Robinson’s come in hitting long balls and playing hard. Murphy’s been an outstanding starter for us; every time he’s been out there he gives us a great opportunity to win. And Doolittle’s been outstanding coming out of the bullpen. Those guys coming from Burlington are contributing whenever they get the opportunity to play or pitch, and they’re just getting it done right now.” Aside from all of the roster activity, and putting the 16 game losing slump behind us (and never looking back!), there were some very bright points for the Ports in the first half of the season, with one of the brightest of course being Miles Head, before his promotion to the Double-A Midland Rockhounds. “That was definitely a highlight – watching that guy lead the league in almost every offensive category, and hitting those HRs; even just hitting period – he was good all around,” Webster reflects. “And you know, watching the guys work, even though the first half was disappointing. The guys were still working hard getting after it, and we have some guys turning it around, getting ready for the second half.” One of those guys being Josh Whitaker – who has certainly stepped up since returning from the All-Star Break, hitting 5 homeruns in the first week back alone. As of July 2, he’s batting .375 with 6 HRs, 10 RBIs, and a .405 on-base percentage. The future looks bright for the Boys of Banner Island, and Garrison says fans can look forward to watching “some good hardnosed baseball” over the rest of the summer. “We’re looking to win every game, and we have guys working hard. So we’re swinging the bat a lot better, we’re playing better defensively, and we’re pitching a lot better. I’m definitely trying to do whatever it takes to win, get in the playoffs, have some fun, and hopefully we could even win this whole thing this year – that’s my personal goal.” We invite Ports fans to continue to come out to Banner Island Ballpark all summer long to watch Webster Garrison and the Ports chase down that 12th California League Championship – his personal goal, and have some fun along the way.
