RED BULLS VS. PORTLAND TIMBERS
Former standout New York defender Mike Petke makes his MLS head coaching debut on Sunday against the Portland Timbers in the regular season opener for both clubs. New York has never lost to the former expansion side that joined MLS in 2011, going 2-0-1 in three matches. Portland is led by former University of Akron head coach Caleb Porter, who will also be managing his first MLS match. In the teams’ last encounter on Aug. 19, 2012 at Red Bull Arena, New York erased a two-goal deficit to win, 3-2, with Heath Pearce scoring the winner.
