“Art is the highest form of hope,” wrote artist Gerhard Richter. To pursue a degree, or a career, in the arts is to believe in the value of our shared humanity, and invest in our shared future, despite the upheaval in the world around us. To create a work of art is to say, “I believe.” Here in the College of the Arts, we nurture, cherish, and practice this belief every day, in a multitude of ways, and I am always eager to share the results of these acts of hope with you, our community. Despite the darkness of these winter months, our vibrant calendar is a testament to the hopeful light burning bright in our corner of Portland. The coming months will bring a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Measure for Measure,” the continuation of the PSU Choirs’ transformative season of choral concerts, the next conversation in our yearlong series “The Arts at the Vanguard of Change,” an exhibition of this year’s winners of the Arlene Schnitzer Visual Arts Prize, and dozens more arts offerings. I invite you to join us at one (or more!) of these events, and embrace hope this winter season. All the best,

Leroy E. Bynum, Jr. Dean, College of the Arts Portland State University

On the cover: PSU Orchestra and conductor Ken Selden extend a special Valentine to music lovers with a program of beloved selections from the pop and classical worlds. See page 7.

State of the art: With this annual exhibition, the School of Art + Design celebrates the work of the 2023 Arlene Schnitzer Visual Arts Prize recipients Ashley Yang-Thompson (MFA candidate in Studio Practice), Ash Kukuzke (BFA candidate in Graphic Design), and Mohabbat Khatibnia-Mansouri (BFA Art Practice, ‘23). Ashley Yang-Thompson creates colorful signposts that honor the reality of our interior lives, asking, “What if signs pointed towards the heart that is always breaking, the self that is perpetually shapeshifting, and the overwhelming questions that govern our inner lives?” Through analog and digital means, Ash Kukuzke’s work explores her experience with aphantasia—an enigmatic condition characterized by the absence of mental imagery—and its effects on memory, nostalgia, and grief. Mohabbat Khatibnia-Mansouri uses tools within sculpture and social science as a vehicle for participatory installations. The exhibition runs February 27 through April 27. See page 7.

COLLEGE OF THE ARTS

SHAKESPEARE’S FIRST FOLIO

All the world’s a stage: The College of the Arts joins the citywide Shakespeare’s First Folio: 1623-2023 initiative to investigate William Shakespeare’s wide-ranging impact on our arts and culture. On Thursday, February 8, PSU School of Music Professor Darrell Grant presents “Love, Death, Ambition, Power, Fate, Free Will: Shakespearean Sonnets in Song,” a musical encounter with Shakespeare’s written text featuring faculty and student composers and performers transporting 400-year-old language into modern contexts and styles. See page 5. Theater professor Karin Magaldi directs Aditi Brennan Kapil’s translation of Shakespeare’s “Measure for Measure,” which examines and warns against the corrupting influence of power, even among the most virtuous of individuals. Kapil’s translation upholds the play’s construction, concepts, and rhythms with modern language that brings the tale to life for 21st-century audiences. Presented in partnership with Play On Shakespeare. Runs Thursday, February 29 through March 9 (opening night Friday, March 1). See below.
