LAP SWIM ETIQUETTE: “Circle Swimming” is necessity when more than two people are in a lane. Lane lines divide lap lanes, Think of the lane as a highway, always stay on the right hand side. Like a highway lap lanes may become crowded, at these times “circle swimming’ is a necessity. Lap lanes are designated according to a swimmers’ speed; slow, medium & fast. Look at the yellow markers and the end of the pool to find your appropriate lane. LAP SWIM (Lap Pool): We will make every attempt to have 1-2 lap lanes available, at all times, for adult lap swimmers. Up to 4 lanes will be available at designated times, call 503-823-3450 for complete schedule of lap lanes available during operating hours.

Water Fitness Water Workouts: Exercising in the water cushions the impact, reducing stress on the joints while supporting the muscles & promoting more efficient toning. Twelve times more resistant than air, water allows triple strength gains over land aerobics! In addition, heart rates are lower in the water, allowing for optimal fat burning & less fatigue. Check out our shallow or deep-water classes & enjoy the benefits!

Portland Parks & Recreation The East Portland Community Center educational preschool program is based on the philosophy that children develop & grow at their own rate. In order to grow & develop their senses a child must “play” by exploring & manipulating their environment. To enhance this experience, the classroom is set up in learning centers that enable children to explore different areas of development such as fine motor, socialization, pre-math, pre-reading & listening skills. Preschool for your child is the foundation for academic learning. The East Portland Community Center Preschool Program follows the traditional school schedule with children enrolled September through May.

Portland Parks & Recreation Art Gallery for Young Artists

Angela Horton is an artist and graphic designer with a degree from the Art Institute of Seattle. Her areas of artistic interest include illustration, digital art & mixed media collage (working primarily with paint, found objects & recycled materials). Angela believes that creativity & self-expression are cornerstones of a fulfilling life & enjoys sharing this passion with others. She is inspired by nature, music & fashion. In her free time, Angela enjoys spending time outdoors, playing guitar & singing & sharing good food with friends & family.

Week 1: Explore Liquid Watercolors! Class begins with a walk outside to gather leaves & observe nature. Use pencils & charcoal to draw silhouettes of leaves & nature-inspired imagery. Then, fill in the silhouettes with liquid watercolors in a rainbow of colors. Kids love playing with these drippy, transparent paints and finding inspiration right in their own back yard! Week 2: Drawing Basics - People Portraits Learn the basics of creating a self-portrait which focuses on the face, hair, neck, & shoulders. A grid is used to aid in the placement of features. A monochromatic color scheme teaches about the ‘mood’ of colors. Learn about shading & create a portrait that is as unique as you!

Week 3: Maori Koru (Fern) Designs with Pastels & Tempera Paints The Maori Koru design, derived from the frond of the New Zealand fern plant, is used in many tribal New Zealand art forms. It symbolizes new life, growth, strength, peace, renewal, & hope for the future. Create fern-inspired designs using pastels & tempera paints & learn about symbolism & abstract art. Week 4: Let’s Fly (...& Make) a Kite! Students make & decorate their own kites using paper, string, a chop stick, and streamers/ribbon. The best part about these kites is that they fly without wind - just run and it will soar on the other end of the string! The last few minutes of class will be spent outside (weather permitting) so that students can try out their creations! Week 5: Symbolic Self-Portraits using Mixed Media Collage This lesson allows the utmost creative freedom; students choose from a variety of different mediums and collage materials to create an abstract self-portrait. This exercise teaches students to ‘think outside the box’ by encouraging them to represent themselves through symbolism. Students will spend the last few minutes of class sharing their artwork. Week 6: Mexican Folk Art Use pencils, markers, & paint to create works of art inspired by Amate Bark Paintings by the Otomi Indians of San Pablito, Mexico. Birds are the subject & basic design principles like ‘the rule of three’ will be emphasized. Explore the difference between line & shape, & create a unique masterpiece to take home at the end of class.

INCLUSION SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS Within the Americans with Disability Act (ADA) of 1990, Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) provides accommodations to individuals with disabilities/special needs, so that they may receive an equal opportunity to fully participate in programs offered citywide. How it Works First choose the activity you’d like to do & the PP&R site at which you’d like to do it. Next, register for the class. When registering, let the person know that you will need accommodations in order to participate in the activity. Once registered, contact Inclusion Services at (503) 823-4328. If this is your first accommodation through Inclusion Services, you will need to do a phone intake with a staff member at that number. At the end of the phone intake it will be determined whether an assistant will be needed on the first day of the activity to provide on-site support at the age-appropriate class. Future assistance will be provided based on need. The inclusion staff will work with the instructor on how to support you and your individual needs. A general program may be adapted using auxiliary aids & services, but the basic structure of the program remains the same. Accommodations are made as needed & can be flexible & creative, ensuring the participant engages as independently as possible. If you have questions about Inclusion Services, please call 503-823-4328 V/TTY. A minimum of 10 business days (Monday-Friday) advance notice is required. The Inclusion Services staff will do their best to accommodate each participant.
