EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
UNFPA 2014 COVERAGE HIGHLIGHTS ANALYSIS — In the year 2014, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) received widespread coverage from leading outlets across the globe for its thought-leadership and international humanitarian efforts. In print, broadcast and on the web, on six continents, in targeted donor countries and in all official UN languages, news coverage of UNFPA’s stellar work reached millions of people in influential markets far and wide. The State of the World Population (SWOP) report continued to be a go-to source for journalists for insights into demographic trends around the world. The SWOP report generated an exceptional amount of coverage for UNFPA in influential publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNN, Forbes and The Globe and Mail. The New York Times covered the SWOP report extensively twice – a rarity in top-tier outlets – and also prominently featured key messages from the report. The Globe and Mail, which reaches over 6 million viewers on its website, also featured a substantial amount of commentary from the report and included quotes in nearly every paragraph. O Globo and ZDF also published front page stories about the launch of the report. Media missions not only brought UNFPA’s efforts in family planning to life, they also led to extensive media coverage. The Economist, NPR, France 24, Le Figaro, El Mundo, and EFE covered the missions through all mediums – print, video, broadcast and online. The Economist published two articles drawing attention to UNFPA’s work to help end child marriage in Niger and quoted a UNFPA representative. Le Figaro, one of France’s national dailies, published a lengthy piece on UNFPA’s program in Ethiopia and included quotes from on the ground representatives. NPR published two articles on husband schools in Niger and NPR’s most respected program, Morning Edition, aired a radio piece that reached up to 12 million listeners across the United States. The International Conference on Population and Development (ICDP) report with its diverse views of human rights, population, sexual and reproductive health, gender equality and sustainable development, also resonated with key reporters resulting in top tier coverage in outlets including TIME, The New York Times and Le Monde. The New York Times’ article carried quotes from Executive Director Babatunde Osotimehin while TIME’s story leads with UNFPA’s recommendations on actions needed to make progress. By the end of the 2014, UNFPA secured a total of 5,683 mentions including in 13 of the world’s 15 most influential English publications.
