was born and raised in Poland. I've moved to the United States in 2004 after finishing high school. Today I'm living in Chicago where I'm working. Starting in January 2011, I'm going back to school to get a degree in Medical Imaging. I was always interested in general fashion and modeling. However, my adventure with photography is strictly coincidental. A while ago I was offered a photo shoot by a professional photographer and I liked the results. It's probably not what I will do in the future full time, but for now modeling is a great adventure which I enjoy.

Since 2005, Andrea has enveloped herself in the world of fashion and assists in photo shoots, fashion shows, and weddings with selftaught makeup skills. She uses the alias ‘D.Vixen’ from combining her nickname, ‘Drea’ and a comment one of her clients stated: ‘You make me feel like a Vixen!’ and uses it from time to time. Not only is she passionate about makeup, but Andrea ventures into modeling and photography, and never left her roots by painting portraits as her side hobby.

orn in Chicago, IL, Andrea Ca’ Mille Samuels began sketching people and objects at the age of 3. At age 6, Andrea won her first drawing contest and was published in the News Star Newspaper in Chicago in 1991. Between ages 7 and 12, she invested her time in the arts and entered various contests throughout the years. 8

Due to her art skills, Andrea earned a scholarship from the Art Institute of Chicago and was enrolled for a fall semester in 1993 at age 9. Her skills continued to improve when she was hired by Gallery 37, a temp job for teens, between the ages of 13 and 19. After graduating from Harold Washington College in 2006, she focused her art skills through makeup when hired at The Body Shop. It was then that she discovered her true passion by integrating color, art, and creativity on faces.

In July 2009, she was trained by makeup artistry instructor Jill Glaser - Maltezos, earning her IL State Certificate in Makeup Artistry from Make Up First LLC; School of Make Up Artistry. Since receiving her state certification, Andrea has brought her talents toward many runway fashion shows, Vassar Magazine.com, MyBlueCarpet.com, HBNB Productions, and The Powder Agency. For 2010, Andrea is now a published makeup artist in HUSH Chicago Fashion Magazine, the Head Makeup Artist for 32 Style Magazine, and will bring her makeup artistry skills to another level with photographer Jabari J. Hunt in showcasing her jewelry line, R3.

RUTH: How old were you when you discovered your talent? ANDREA: I was about 3 when I first started drawing portraits. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always been drawn to facial features, perfecting the shapes of eyes, working the angles of noses. Bone structures always fascinated me. I never understood my admiration for faces until makeup artistry found me at age 19. RUTH: Who is your role model? ANDREA: My mother is my role model. She is a strong, honest, forgiving, loving, amazing woman, and I see myself becoming more like her every day. My mother has always believed in me and in my talents. I hope to eventually take care of her as much as she has taken care of me. RUTH: In three words, describe yourself. ANDREA: Perfectionist, Professional, Precise. RUTH: In three words, describe your art. ANDREA: Clean, Strong, Fierce. RUTH: Does anyone in particular influence or inspire you? ANDREA: I love artists that have the courage to show their vulnerability and have the power to bring you into their world. Pat McGrath is an amazing selftaught makeup artist that uses mixed mediums on the faces of models for designers like Dior and editorials like Vogue. McGrath has inspired me to recently use latex on the models of CLEONS Fall 2010 Fashion Show, an up and coming Chicago Designer that I work with time to time. Kevyn Aucoin was an amazing artist. His books inspired me to become a fearless artist and to bring my artistry to its fullest potential. I love Chuck Close; he is a photo realist painter that starting painting around the 1960â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s and still paints today. I love his method of the mediums he uses in his work. RUTH: What drives you? ANDREA: My love for art drives me. My love to show the world my capabilities of what a pure artist can do keeps me going every day, every hour, and every second. I am on modelmayhem.com and facebook.com sending my resume and showing my work to potential clients all day, all the time. Art is a sickness for me! RUTH: How is life as an artist in Chicago? ANREA: The Midwest currently has a strong market for clean work in media and print, but there are a lot of artists going for the creative, high fashion market since its not very popular. I was one of those artists striving to create the craziest, most creative, and weirdest art work on faces, but I’ve learned that to be an all-around great artist is the key to success. I love that I now know how to do anything a client could ask for: clean & simple, creative, horror, vintage, prosthetics, and hair styling upon request thanks to Make Up First Academy - the school I attended. Chicago is a slower market for makeup artists compared to New York or Los Angeles, but there are jobs and clients in Chicago that are willing to pay you for your craft; they’re just a little harder to find. RUTH: What was your experience like when you won your first drawing contest? ANDREA: I was six years old when I won my first drawing contest. My mother told me I was happy, but I honestly don’t remember! RUTH: Wow! At age 9, you earned a scholarship from the Art Institute of Chicago! Tell me more about that. How did this happen? ANDREA: Yes, I remember that at age 9 in the 3rd grade, I was advanced to a 7th grade English class and I earned a scholarship from The Art Institute around the same time. I believe my

3rd grade teacher, Ms. Hogan, submitted my artwork to the Art Institute and they responded back with a scholarship for one whole semester. At the time, I thought it was cool that I was in a room full of adults and we are all drawing inanimate objects together. I didn’t understand the amazing opportunity I had at the time; I just thought The Art Institute was like any other school. The School of the Art Institute wanted to advance me to another class, but when my mom

found out they were going to enroll me in nude figure drawing, she pulled me out immediately! RUTH: How did your art evolve into make-up artistry? ANREA: My artistry turned into makeup artistry when I needed my makeup done for prom and had no money. I borrowed a dress from one of my aunts, and I borrowed makeup from my sister and my mother. For some reason, applying makeup felt

natural to me. I didn’t second guess it; it felt like painting to me. I officially realized my talent in makeup artistry when I was randomly hired by The Body Shop. I had no experience, but they trusted my word and gave me a chance. Once hired there, I was so excited to be able to work on so many different faces. I knew this was the career for me when I had so many returning customers only asking for me. RUTH: What advice can you give aspiring artists out there? ANDREA: Advice I would give to aspiring artists is: 1.) Do not give up. 2.) Educate yourself. Education will better you as a person and as an artist. 3.) Go with your gut instinct: It will never tell you wrong. RUTH: Where do you see yourself in 35 years from now as far as growth as an artist and make-up artist?

ANDREA: When I’m around 30 years old, I will have a family but I won’t stop my artistry. I know for sure I will get back to painting and start selling my art again. After having the experience of being a mother, I know my artistry will grow in a different direction. I will be traveling to Paris, New York, Japan, and other locations outside of America for work. During my down time, I will chill with my man and wear a string of fake pearls around my neck every day. RUTH: If you had to make a wish to draw or sketch a famous person, who would that be? ANDREA: I don’t wish to draw celebrities, I just do it! I have drawn Andre 3000, Alicia Keys, and models I’ve seen in magazines. If I could actually work with someone and draw them face to face, I’d love to meet and draw Jill Scott. I’d also love to work with up and coming super model Sessilee Lopez. I love to emulate dark skin on canvas and paper.

ALTJANA: It is very dynamic and the key to success is challenging myself every time. Being in the center of the fashion world and the achievements of other professionals of the field, sharing the experience with fellow artists, be creative and bold.

RUTH: In your own words pertaining to your craft, what do you consider the ultimate self-expression? ALTJANA: I always focus on the complete picture for the best look for a client, taking into account individual personality, personal style, and lifestyle. That's total beauty. RUTH: What are some of the memorable experiences you have encountered in your work? ALTJANA: Working with Photographer Fadil Berisha in his studio and Malan Breton at his fashion show. RUTH: How have you evolved as a make-up artist in the past 15 years? ALTJANA: My biggest achievement has been realizing the dream of opening my own salon, having a chance to practice every day what I love, and affecting the life of the people with my work.

ALTJANA: Work hard and try to learn as much as you can. Assist as many shows as you can. You need to know every trick of the trade. RUTH: Where do you see yourself in 3-5 years from now as far as growth as a make-up artist and hairstylist? ALTJANA: Expanding my business. Getting more involved in Fashion and TV. RUTH: If you had to make a wish to do make-up and hair on any famous person, who would it be? ALTJANA: Catherine Zeta Jones and Charlize Theron. RUTH: Which projects are you currently working on? ALTJANA: Opening my salon "HAIR & THE CITY" - it will be one of the best salons in NYC.

From 1970 to 1989, she served in the People’s Liberation Army where she worked in a variety of capacities, notably as a radio broadcaster, librarian, cinematographer, surgical nurse, political office club director, cultural officer, and film artistic designer. entered the army in 1970 and for the first 6 years I was a radio operator, librarian, and film projectionist. This job entailed waking everyone up in the morning playing Chinese army music and playing propaganda movies at night. I also looked after the library, and it was here that I found a room with banned books. The book that would change my life was “Michelangelo’s Drawings” and I would spend many Sundays in the locked library marveling at the sketches of the human body, then I started copying the drawings - all of which were banned during the cultural revolution. Also, communal showering was part of army life and during the time in which I discovered “Michelangelo's Drawings” I was inspired to draw bodies of other females based on my observations in the shower. Some girls were suspicious of my advances in asking them if I could draw them, but most agreed after I explained that I only wanted to draw the body and not their faces. This is where I learned my craft of drawing the female body. The other major influence in anatomy came about when I started training as a nurse. Part of the training was examination of bodies and the relationship of bone and muscle. I would go back after class and examine in detail how the human body was formed. A large part of my life is sleeping and dreaming. I've always needed more sleep than most people and I'm a private person and enjoy my rest and sleep. Therefore I see the state of a women sleeping as a beautiful and comforting image. In regards to frogs, I'm scared of them. But I have another feeling, which is that they are cold, and in summer they represent a cool breeze which is relief on a hot day.

My military training and other experiences were all based on training in all female environments, so men were a small part of my army experience and therefore a small part of my paintings. Also, I know the female body more than a man's body and my females are also influenced by Michelangelo's muscle drawings, so I have merged my army female images with Michelangelo's male muscle to create my images like a genetically modified person. Also this period in the army, which is female centric, was intimate in a spiritual, psychological, and habit forming way as we had no secrets and we were working through a period that had never existed and will never exist again. The camaraderie and humor was all encompassing - we lived in the same army compound, we trained and worked together , we ate together - this was our life cut off from family which Mao had said was an acceptable part of the cultural revolution. My series on genetically modified food is an extension of my female images which are genetically modified in regards to incorporating Michelangelo's male muscles .

Modern female athletes are realizations of that image. My 14 meter work the "Relic of the New 87 Immortals-Following the Sun" shows interposed images on this Ming Dynasty scroll of females covering hundreds of years of different fashion. I'm not interested in either the fashion or the politics of any eras. In my mind clothing and fashion mask the real person, so there is an element of mockery of the original Ming Dynasty images which show nothing of the real person, but show a lot about the fashion of that period. I'm not influenced by modern pop culture and the "in your face” erotic and pornographic images. As stated before I'm not interested in politics, and while there is no question that modern China is totally open to western influences - good and bad - I see that, like the rest of the world, it will create great challenges on many levels - social, cultural, economic, environmental. The speed of change is not something that I embrace, but the access to a global artistic community is something that I find stimulating as an artist.

I was bored one evening mid January 2005. I normally read whenever I’m bored to pass the time, but this given evening I was not particularly feeling up to it. After frantically searching my room for something fun to do, I found an old entertainment magazine which contained photos of superstars. I flipped through the pages and found a photo of rapper Nelly. This photo was my inspiration. It was the photo that started it all. I sat at my desk and decided to start sketching the image from the magazine on my standard ruled exercise book. After several attempts, it proved to be so difficult so I gave up for a while. I later embarked on it and after a few months of practice I got the hang of it and have been drawing ever since! So far the images I have sketched are those from music superstars such Beyoncé, to movie stars as Zach Galifianakis from “The Hangover” (this was part of my second project I named the “Bic Project”) and, military veteran and entrepreneur Scott Tucker and many more.

y name is Lovemore Omanya. I’m 20 years old currently living in Nairobi, Kenya. I have been drawing for the past five years during which I have had a chance to exhibit my work at "Wapi" formerly held at British council Nairobi. My talent has made me appreciate the arts in general, and in return I have met many people who appreciate my work, too! Art materials are expensive, but I enjoy using simple materials (like HB pencil or BIC sharp point pen) to make beautiful pieces . The pieces I do are inspired by observation, mainly from posters of people in magazines and newspapers to leaflets, which I draw and keenly try to maintain the originality of the original poster including the detail from every shading. 40
