SHANGAA : ART OF TANZANIA + Annual Report: A Year In Review

FROM THE DIRECTOR’S OFFICE Dear Members, In this issue of Inside the Circle I am pleased to share our Annual Report, along with an exclusive look at upcoming exhibitions and programs. Following the success of the “Year of Winslow Homer,” the PMA strives to honor our heritage, while reflecting the changing landscape and culture of our community. In 2013, we continue to explore Maine’s creative culture and foster the interpretation of European Modernism while presenting progressive exhibitions that address the world around us. Our winter exhibition, Lois Dodd: Catching the Light, continued the museum’s survey of great artists who find their creative voice in Maine. This selection was affirmed by the New York Times, which stated: “It is a loss that no New York museum could find room for this revelatory exhibition.” During this time, we also presented the collaborative project Voices of Design: 25 Years of Architalx and the inspiring Youth Art Month, and began a long-awaited reinstallation of portions of our permanent collection, reinvigorating our galleries. This summer, we bring The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) to Maine with The William S. Paley Collection: A Taste for Modernism, a spectacular display of modern art masterpieces. The PMA is the only northeast venue for this exhibition, and you will want to make time to see these European Modernist masterworks on view together. Our second major summer exhibition, Shangaa: Art of Tanzania, creates a platform for our increasingly diverse audiences to enjoy art that is not represented in our collection. Looking ahead, we will open Ahmed Alsoudani: Redacted in September. Alsoudani, born in Baghdad, found his vision here in Maine at the Maine College of Art (MECA) and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. This exhibition will explore and broaden the notion of the 21st-century Maine artist. PMA Director Mark Bessire with artist Lois Dodd.

As befits a museum founded by artists, the 2013 Portland Museum of Art Biennial: Piece Work addresses the core of our mission to explore the creative culture of our state and engage the vibrant community of contemporary artists living in and connected to Maine. And finally, in commemoration of the sesquicentennial of the Civil War, Winslow Homer’s Civil War will feature works from the marvelous collection of Homer’s graphics given to the museum by Peggy and Harold Osher. A range of programs complements this compelling exhibition schedule. Cannon Rock Sessions, a new Winslow Homer Studio “think tank” program, will bring together Maine artist Anna Hepler and Don Perkins, president and CEO of the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, for a week-long residency at Prouts Neck—providing numerous opportunities for community participation and enrichment. Please also join us to celebrate and honor the 30th anniversary of our treasured Charles Shipman Payson Building with a special lecture by Henry N. Cobb, the building’s esteemed architect, who will share his thoughts on Portland’s past, present, and future. Check out our Spotlight and Calendar sections for more information. Thank you, PMA members, for your affirmation and support as we present a taste of the local and global happenings influencing our community. Visit soon and visit often. See you at the PMA!

Shangaa: Art of Tanzania is the firstever major exhibition and publication outside of Tanzania and Germany to focus on art from the nation of Tanzania on Africa’s eastern seaboard. As exhibition curator Gary van Wyk notes, in Swahili, the lingua franca of East Africa, “shangaa” is the “root word ... for things that have the capacity to amaze, astonish, surprise, ... and even dumbfound us.” In this exhibition, that promise is fulfilled by striking objects loaned from private and institutional collections in America and Europe. Renowned masterpieces from museums in the former West Germany—such as the Nyamwezi chair from Berlin’s Ethnological Museum—join pieces

long hidden behind the Iron Curtain in Dresden, Leipzig, and Budapest. Many of these objects have never before been photographed in color or left Europe. The objects in Shangaa range from items such as a Swahili model of a dhow, a type of boat, from the late 1800s, to recent masks by celebrated sculptors, underscoring the fact that Tanzanian cultures are vibrant, living traditions. Recent film and photography included throughout the exhibition capture art in action to reinforce this up-to-date view, and fresh research informs the interpretation. The exhibition is organized thematically into sections that examine royal regalia, healing, initiation, dance and performance,

and colonial contact. Figurative works in various media predominate, with a focus on the aesthetic power of individual art objects. Tanzania is a Central African crossroads, where the Nilotic culture of North Africa meets the Bantu-speakers to the south. Inhabitants of Tanzania’s Swahili Coast, who had been engaged in global trade since the first millennium AD, later forged relations with groups settled around the lakes of the Great Rift Valley, which links peoples, culturally and artistically, down what has been termed the Zipper of Africa. Tanzania has long been open to and influenced by extensive trade, both inland and with merchants from Arabia and India. Tanzanian art has been largely unknown to Westerners for several reasons. German colonization between the 1880s and the end of the First World War placed Tanzania beyond the scope of French and English interests and collectors, who largely led the collection and study of African art. World War II dispersed Germany’s collections, and fewer Tanzanian objects were acquired and studied. From 1961 to 1985, when the collection, exhibition, and study of African art expanded, Tanzania was under the leadership of President Julius Nyerere, whose “modernization” programs isolated Tanzania from the west. Part of the PMA’s vision is to present progressive exhibitions beyond our collection that address local and global issues. Director Mark Bessire advised on the organization of Shangaa; conducted

research at the Sukuma Museum in Tanzania as a Fulbright Fellow, studying the ways in which indigenous cultures displayed cultural objects; and has written on Tanzanian art and culture. His expertise makes this an ideal opportunity for the PMA to showcase an exhibition of non-Western art. Shangaa adds to our reputation as a place for innovative scholarship and presents the arts of other cultures to our increasingly diverse audiences. In particular, many of the newest members of our community are arriving from East and Northeast Africa. Some of these immigrants spend time in refugee communities in Tanzania before coming to America. As Maine’s population changes, it is crucial for the PMA to provide leadership in the area of cultural diversity. We hope that you will take this special opportunity to expand your own horizons and to be amazed by the spectacular array of objects in Shangaa: Art of Tanzania!

SHANGAA: A R T O F TA N Z A N I A Catalogue A 341-page catalogue edited by curator Gary van Wyk accompanies this exhibition. The Man Behind the

treat with works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Paul Gauguin, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and other modern masters. The Spring 2013 issue of Inside the Circle presented an overview of this exciting exhibition; this issue spotlights the man behind the art. Born in Chicago, William S. Paley (1901–1990) became a titan in the broadcasting world and a dedicated patron of modern art. He took over the reins of the fledgling Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) from his father in 1928 and transformed the company into the communications empire that it is today. Dedicated to disseminating the news as well as entertaining America, Paley cultivated the talents of broadcasting greats such as Edward R. Murrow and Walter Cronkite, and oversaw the network’s programming, airing successful television hits such as I Love Lucy and Gunsmoke. Under his leadership the company also made history in the music industry by introducing the long-playing record or LP in 1948—Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen count among CBS’s music legends. Paley’s fascination with new media technologies paralleled his passion for modern art. A formative trip to Europe in 1933 fostered his profound appreciation for the work of modern French masters and launched his collecting activities. Paley returned to America buoyed by the determination to surround himself with art. Over the ensuing decades, he amassed a significant personal collection of modern art that adorned his home and office at CBS until his death, when the collection was bequeathed to The Museum of Modern Art, New York (MoMA). Sixty-one treasures from Paley’s collection are now on view at the PMA. Don’t miss the opportunity to see these magnificent works before they return to MoMA.

A Year in Review Director ’s Introduction Through the extraordinary efforts of our staff and the committed support of our community, this was a banner year for the Portland Museum of Art as we strengthened our role as the cultural voice of Maine and northern New England. A total of 176,778 people explored the museum and enjoyed our engaging and diverse programming. As anticipated, the public and media attention we garnered for Winslow Homer—with the opening of his renovated Studio at Prouts Neck and the landmark exhibition Weatherbeaten: This Annual Report of the Portland Museum of Art is for the Fiscal Year beginning February 1, 2012 and ending January 31, 2013.

Winslow Homer and Maine—was incredible. We were well prepared for the year with the restructuring of our visitor experience and launch of the PMA brand initiative through a new logo, magazine, Homer website, and social media, and with branding our new store and café to reflect our increase in partnerships with local vendors. Audiences and critics from local schoolteachers to the Wall Street Journal, the Boston Globe, and the New York Times applauded the museum for its scholarship and visitor experience. In his 2012 arts roundup, Sebastian Smee of the Boston Globe called our programming “smashing stuff.” The Portland Press Herald praised the Homer project, stating: This is all good news for the museum, but it is also good news for Portland and the state. Maine’s art community needs the Portland Museum of Art and other key institutions to be strong, building Maine’s reputation as a place to see good art, and building the audience for creative work in a wide variety of media. The city and state benef it from another draw for tourists. It’s likely that the people who came for the Homer exhibit will want to come back, so this good news is something all of Maine can celebrate. We should be proud that our local and national community recognizes the PMA for fulfilling our mission and vision and that we are experiencing the benefit of following our Strategic Plan.

With our current board, staff, systems, and structures, we are prepared to capitalize on this success by making fiscal year 2013/14 a transformational one at the PMA, setting the tone and standard for years to come. We are nearing the culmination of the vision of the Trustees who opened the Payson building in 1983 and those who opened the McLellan House in 2002 by securing a solid financial base, making plans to utilize all buildings on our campus, and focusing on the collection. Now that we have completed the Winslow Homer Studio Campaign, it is time for our board and staff to mirror the aspirational generations before us by taking a leadership role during the great new renaissance of Portland and Maine. Our communication systems, visitor experience, and educational programming will continue to exceed visitor expectations. We look forward to a summer full of programs in conjunction with the MoMA and Tanzania exhibitions, as well as the inaugural season of Winslow Homer Studio educational programming. The Annual Report gives us the opportunity to reflect on what has been a historic year for the Portland Museum of Art. We hope you will enjoy revisiting our successes on the following pages and will eagerly anticipate the programs to come. We know that these accomplishments were only possible due to the generous and loyal support of our members, friends, corporate members, foundation donors, visitors, Docents, volunteers, and staff. Thank you for all that you do for the museum. You make us who we are and carry us forward.

A YEAR IN REVIEW

Collections This year witnessed the momentous opening of the Winslow Homer Studio, which provides visitors unique insight into Homer’s creative practice and the site that inspired his art. This landmark structure, perched on the coast at Prouts Neck, adds to the PMA’s other architecturally significant buildings and secures our national reputation as the home of Winslow Homer. The PMA’s permanent collection continued to grow in exciting ways during the year through generous gifts and judicious purchases, the latter supported by the Friends of the Collection, Photography Fund, and other donated funds. Among the highlights of nearly 100 new acquisitions is a luminous 19th-century American landscape painting by Alfred Bricher, bequeathed by Elizabeth Allen Straus. The museum expanded its core strength of American modernist art through the purchase of a Max Weber gouache, the second work by this important artist in the collection, and through the gift of a Ralston Crawford painting, donated by Maurice H. and Margery Katz.

P O R T L A N D M U S E U M of A R T

Examples of late 20th-century developments in modernism entered the collection through the extremely generous gift of two major sculptures by Sir Anthony Caro, donated by Dr. Guido Goldman in honor of his friends, PMA Trustee Leonard Nelson and his wife, Merle. The W. D. and M. L. Hamill Fund for American Art provided crucial funding to install one of the Caro pieces in the museum’s sculpture garden. An anonymous donor also gave an important painting by Jules Olitski, Caro’s contemporary. The PMA expanded its holdings of contemporary art with the targeted purchase of a significant painting by the art-making collective Tim Rollins + K.O.S. (Kids of Survival). This acquisition fulfills multiple criteria that we look for in a work of art—it is a powerful picture by an artist with deep connections to Maine and the museum (Rollins, a native of the state, was the speaker for the 2008 Leonard and Merle Nelson Social Justice Fund Lecture); it resonates with other works in our permanent collection; and it represents national and international currents in contemporary practice.

INSIDE THE CIRCLE

SUMMER 2013

In keeping with the goal of purchasing works featured in PMA-organized exhibitions, we bought a suite of photographs from images commissioned for the fall Circa exhibition, Between Past and Present: The Homer Studio Photographic Project. The photographs were acquired through the generosity of Judy and Al Glickman and in honor of Susan Danly, former PMA Senior Curator. With support from the Friends of the Collection, we also purchased Woman Flying, a long-sought-after painting by Katherine Bradford that was in the 2001 Portland Museum of Art Biennial. In European art, the museum’s strong holdings of German Expressionist prints were bolstered once again by the continued generosity of David and Eva Bradford, who donated 12 prints by artists including Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Käthe Kollwitz, Emil Nolde, and Max Pechstein.

Exhibitions The dynamic exhibition program began with a focus on French art with Edgar Degas: The Private Impressionist. His portraits of family and friends and images of dancers behind the scenes provided a glimpse into the artist’s private world. Summer ushered in a pictorial adventure to the French coast with The Draw of the Normandy Coast, 1860–1960, which explored the importance of seaside towns Honfleur, Le Havre, and Étretat in the work of Claude Monet, Gustave Courbet, Henri Matisse, and other artists. From Portland to Paris: Mildred Burrage’s Years in France celebrated the impact of Monet’s legacy on the Portlandborn artist Mildred Burrage during her formative time in Giverny in the early 20th century. Diverse subjects and old and new photographic practices were showcased in several exhibitions. Making Faces: Photographic Portraits of Actors and Artists featured famous images of Lucille Ball, Pablo Picasso, Martha Graham, and other celebrities, while more private and domestic portraits were on view in the Circa exhibition Tanja Alexia Hollander: Are You Really My Friend? Hollander’s photographs of her Facebook friends explored the relationship between art and social media. In celebration of the opening of the Winslow Homer Studio, the Circa exhibition Between Past and Present: The Homer Studio Photographic Project showcased the work of five contemporary photographers who reprised historic processes to produce images inspired by the Studio and its surrounding landscape. Maine’s crucial impact on American art was explored in Maine Sublime: Frederic Edwin Church’s Landscapes of Mount Desert and Mount Katahdin, dedicated to the works of famed 19th-century painter Frederic Edwin Church. The Portland Society of Art and Winslow Homer’s Legacy in Maine studied the early years of the Portland Society of Art, the PMA’s precursor, founded in 1882, and the artistic relationship between Winslow Homer and his Maine contemporaries. The year culminated in the groundbreaking exhibition Weatherbeaten: Winslow Homer and Maine, which examined Homer’s Prouts Neck œuvre and his revolutionary approach to marine painting with an extraordinary selection of his late masterworks. More than 79,000 visitors took advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience Homer’s art.

Learning and Interpretation The PMA Education Department transformed its work in this fiscal year. In an effort to make museum visits more engaging and fulfilling, the department’s programs and projects focused on facilitating in-gallery experiences. Programs concentrated on innovative learning for students on Free School Tours, designing new resources for families, and developing new methods of interpreting the museum’s collections. To reflect this new focus, the department name was changed to the Department of Learning and Interpretation. A total of 12,209 K-12 schoolchildren visited the museum through field trips and afterschool programs. PMA’s 74 volunteer Docents led students through sketching and story-telling activities that connect works of art to school curricula. This past year saw the launch of Culture Club-Portland, a collaborative program of the Portland Museum of Art, Portland Symphony Orchestra, Portland Ovations, and Portland Stage Company. Through Culture Club-Portland, students in the city’s public school district have the opportunity to participate, for free, in four professional art experiences every school year. In addition, the museum continued its strong partnership with LearningWorks Afterschool and Head Start of Cumberland County through ARTworks, a multi-visit program that connects

PMA collections to curricula objectives for English-language learners. The museum opened PMA Family Space in the McLellan House, which added to the variety of ways families enjoy the museum. Other family resources include the Family Voices Cell Phone Tours, Stop and Look Stations, and Looking Labels. The February vacation week Drawing Dancers Like Degas and a fall event with Circa artist Brenton Hamilton encouraged families and other enthusiastic participants to enjoy the museum from an artist’s perspective. Artists played a key role in museum programming, and the new Artist Interventions series became a community favorite. Artist Interventions invite local artists to design a two-hour experience in the galleries on Free Fridays. Visitors also enjoyed scheduled talks by exhibition artists including Tanja Hollander and Abelardo Morell. In addition to artist-led programs for adults, the museum’s popular Docent-led Gallery Talks added to the energy in the galleries. As noted by one visitor, “We particularly enjoyed the Family Voices Cell Phone Tour that recorded a conversation between two people. The kids liked dialing the phone and spent more time at the exhibit listening.”

Development PMA members and friends helped to make this one of the most successful years in the museum’s 130-year history. The museum balanced its operating budget for the 19th consecutive year and successfully concluded the Winslow Homer Studio Campaign, exceeding its $10.5 million goal. For Campaign details please see below or view the complete Campaign Report online at www.portlandmuseum.org/support/campaign.shtml. PMA membership grew by more than 2,000 households to an all-time high of 9,142. Members constituted the majority of attendees for the inaugural season of Winslow Homer Studio tours, and more than 1,000 members previewed Weatherbeaten: Winslow Homer and Maine before its public opening. The PMA is grateful for membership support, which added $676,056 to the museum’s financial base. In their eighth year, the Contemporaries grew to 272 households and had a wonderful year of mission-driven events. This enthusiastic group of younger members rallied to raise more than $30,000 toward the Winslow Homer Studio Campaign, with nearly one-third of the group’s membership contributing. The Committee of One Hundred, the PMA’s highest membership level, provided $437,652 in essential, unrestricted support. After 30

years, the Steering Committee and Board of Trustees voted to change the group’s name to the Director’s Circle and increase membership dues, effective February 1, 2013. Amy Woodhouse became Chair of the Steering Committee and former Chair Bill Davisson was recognized and thanked for his years of service. The 1882 Circle, a group of donors who support the PMA with gifts of $10,000 or more annually, traveled to Philadelphia for special tours of the Barnes Foundation at its new location and of Shipwreck! Winslow Homer and "The Life Line" at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Corporate and foundation relations continue to strengthen and expand. In conjunction with Weatherbeaten, the PMA held its first Corporate Breakfast, hosted by PMA Trustee Sam Ladd and co-hosted by Owen Wells and Joe Boulos. Bill Williamson, Bank of America President-Maine, remarked on the Bank’s support of the arts and how thrilled they were to support Weatherbeaten with the single largest corporate exhibition sponsorship in PMA history. At the end of the year, the museum had 36 Corporate Members, contributing more than $128,000. The museum strengthened relationships with local and national foundations, garnering more than $122,000 in program and operating support.

SUMMER 2013

In July the PMA will debut Cannon Rock Sessions, a biennial program inspired by the magnificent Maine coast and Winslow Homer’s Studio on Prouts Neck. This program will feature a five-day residency for two “visiting minds,” who lead a series of intimate community conversations around a given theme. This inaugural year of the program focuses on the theme weather. The week’s culminating event will be a Summer Dialogue, which is open to the public and held at the PMA. The program’s title references a distinctive site, Cannon Rock, immortalized by Homer in an 1895 painting. This landmark, cannon-shaped rock is still visible from the Cliff Walk near the Studio. Cannon Rock Sessions are designed to explore diverse disciplines and reach new audiences, using the dramatic site of Homer’s Studio to spark conversations around a theme. The PMA is proud to announce its first visiting minds: Anna Hepler and Don Perkins. Maine artist Anna Hepler’s work was featured in the 2010 PMA solo Circa exhibition, Anna Hepler: Makeshift, which included one of the more memorable installations at the PMA. Hepler’s piece The Great Haul, a large, handsewn plastic net, was hung from the clerestory in the museum’s Selma Wolf Black Great Hall and reached almost to the floor. As Gulf of Maine Research Institute’s (GMRI) president and CEO, Don Perkins thinks both locally and globally about marine resources and the Gulf of Maine, incorporating strategic science, education, and the challenges of ocean stewardship and economic growth. Hepler and Perkins will be in residence at the Black Point Inn, within walking distance of Winslow Homer's Studio at Prouts Neck, from Sunday, July 28, through Friday, August 2. The museum will facilitate conversations between Hepler and Perkins and small community groups, made up of artists, scientists, educators, writers, and marine workers, in order to foster an engaging dialogue about different approaches to the concept of weather.

Anna Hepler + Don Perkins

Join us in the museum’s Bernard Osher Foundation Auditorium on Thursday, August 1, at 6:30 p.m. for the Cannon Rock Sessions culminating event. Summer Dialogue features our inaugural Cannon Rock Sessions participants, Anna Hepler and Don Perkins, synthesizing and sharing ideas discovered during their residency and explored in community conversations on the topic of weather. This program is free and open to the public.

SPOTLIGHT ON: Summer at the Studio

Art in Process July 31, August 1, and August 2 Six high school art and science teachers will participate in a program that involves intensive study of Winslow Homer’s art and his life in Maine. A workshop will prepare teachers to introduce their students to an interdisciplinary art and science unit inspired by Homer and Cannon Rock Sessions. By studying Homer’s career and understanding how the Maine coast informed his art, high school students will develop new ways of looking at their own environments and learn to make personal connections to their own important places. Art in Process is supported by the Sam L. Cohen Foundation and the Charles Evan Hughes Memorial Foundation, Inc. Winslow Homer Studio programming is supported by the Lunder Homer Education Endowment.

Studio Receives Preservation Accolades The Winslow Homer Studio has been honored with a Preservation Award from the Victorian Society in America (VSA), an organization devoted to the conservation and interpretation of the country’s 19th-century cultural heritage. In its notification letter, the VSA recognized that “the museum’s acquisition of this neglected structure and its state-of-the-art rehabilitation was a lengthy and expensive undertaking, but the result is a textbook study in how such a complex project should be handled. Equally important . . . are the interpretive tours of the Studio now offered to the public.”

Six talented and motivated young artists from Portland, Deering, and Casco Bay High Schools have been nominated by their art teachers to participate in a three-week studio program at the PMA. The Homer High School Fellows program uses the Winslow Homer Studio as inspiration and creates a community of teens in the museum this summer. The students will view renowned works of art in the museum’s collection, participate in the inaugural Cannon Rock Sessions, and create a body of work in the media of their choice while working in their own studio at PMA. In addition, Homer High School Fellows will create interpretive tools that represent teen perspectives in the galleries. Homer High School Fellows is supported by the Sam L. Cohen Foundation and the Charles Evan Hughes Memorial Foundation, Inc.

LATEST NEWS Gallery Reinstallation: A New Look in the Galleries On your next visit to the PMA, you will notice dramatic changes in the galleries on the second and third floors of the Charles Shipman Payson Building. Over the past few months, the curators have taken the opportunity to reinstall parts of the PMA’s permanent collection, with more changes yet to come. On the second floor, Chief Curator and Curator of American Art Karen Sherry has returned Winslow Homer’s magisterial Weatherbeaten to the Judy and Al Glickman Gallery, placing this stunning work with a formidable group of 20thcentury marine paintings by American artists who were inspired by Homer’s art to travel to the Maine coast. The neighboring David and Eva Bradford Gallery and passageways feature other examples of American modernism in thematic groupings of figural works, urban imagery, and leisure scenes. On the third floor, visitors will find many changes as well. In January, we inaugurated a dedicated gallery for works on paper in the William Dette Hamill Gallery, where displays will rotate several times per year to protect the museum’s most light-sensitive collections. In other third floor galleries, Curator of Contemporary and Modern Art Jessica May installed paintings and sculpture from our holdings of post-1950 art along with several long-term loans including paintings by Ellsworth Kelly and Portland-based artist Greg Parker. In one of the most significant changes in the building, paintings were hung across from the third floor overlook. Next time you walk into the museum, look up and you may be surprised to find paintings by Katherine Bradford and Scott Davis hovering high above. The museum is making these gallery changes partly to accommodate more works of art from our ever-growing collection, but also as part of the PMA Collection Initiative, a multi-year project to reinstall the museum's collections throughout the building. We look forward to continuing to refine and reinstall over the next three years, trying out new interpretive approaches, and offering you the opportunity to see beloved works of art from a fresh perspective.

PMA Collections on the Road You might notice that some of your favorite works of art from the PMA collection periodically disappear from the galleries. The following “gallery standards” are just some of the works traveling this year for special exhibitions at other institutions, where they can be shared with diverse audiences. Lending to other museums also helps the PMA when we want to borrow works of art for exhibitions we organize. If your summer travels take you to the places listed below, be sure to visit these PMA favorites in their temporary locations. The Art of Giving Great Service On March 18, PMA staff participated in “The Art of Giving Great Service,” a customer service workshop facilitated by Zingerman’s, an Ann Arbor company famous for its unique business model centered around customer service. Ari Weinzweig, one of Zingerman’s founding partners, led the Visitor Experience and Protection Services staff (as well as select staff from every department in the museum) through a series of activities and discussions designed to improve the visitor experience at the PMA. This workshop was part of a continuing effort to focus on giving our visitors the best possible museum experience every time they come through the doors or call us on the phone. Please let us know how we are doing—we want to hear from you!

Book Award for Maine Moderns Maine Moderns: Art in Seguinland, 1900–1940, by Susan Danly and Libby Bischof, has been awarded first prize in the art and photography category of the New England Society Book Awards. The catalogue was published by the Portland Museum of Art and Yale University Press in conjunction with an exhibition of the same name held June 4 through September 11, 2011, at the PMA. The book and exhibition explored the art of Alfred Stieglitz’s circle of modernist artists and the pictorialist photographers from Boston and New York who gathered in Phippsburg and Georgetown, Maine, in the years 1900–1940. Authors and curators Susan Danly and Libby Bischof received the award at a luncheon at the Grolier Club in New York at the annual meeting of the New England Society.

Dr. Alfred Osher Reading Room The PMA is pleased to introduce the Dr. Alfred Osher Reading Room and its companion study room in the museum’s McLellan House. Visitors are invited to take a seat in a comfortable chair or at the reading table to browse through books about the museum’s collections and exhibitions, intended to connect visitors to the art they see around them.

The PMA is saddened by the loss of Charles “Chip” Homer Willauer, who passed away on February 14, 2013. Chip was an integral member of the PMA family, a pillar of the Winslow Homer Studio Campaign, and a leader of the Prouts Neck community. Chip was born in Boston in 1938 and spent summers at Prouts Neck with his family his entire life. He was an avid sailor, and he served as commodore of the Prouts Neck Yacht Club, president of the Prouts Neck Association, and warden of St. James Church. The great-grandnephew of Winslow Homer, Chip sold the Homer Studio to the PMA in 2006 and was a critical part of the campaign to restore and preserve this icon of American art history. He was thrilled with the completion of this project and the attention it received locally and nationally. Chip was a loyal supporter of the museum and its efforts, exhibitions, and programs. He will be greatly missed.
