Local Health and Social Care Champion Given National Role Chair of local group Healthwatch Enfield, Deborah Fowler, has been appointed to the committee of Healthwatch England to help represent the views of patients, care users and the public at a national level. Healthwatch England is a nationally focused organisation that, together with Healthwatch Enfield and 151 other community focused local Healthwatch, works to ensure consumers’ views are represented both nationally and locally. Deborah is one of six new committee members joining Healthwatch England, and will be looking to build on the strong foundations laid by the outgoing members

who have seen the Healthwatch network through its first year.

The new appointees bring with them a wealth of knowledge and experience in understanding people’s everyday experiences of health and social care as well as the challenges faced by local Healthwatch in driving change at a local level. An economist by background, Deborah has expertise in areas including finance, regulation, governance, strategy and communications. Having previously worked for the Bank of England and the Financial Services Authority, she left the world of finance to become Chief Executive of a north London charity

in the Age Concern Federation. Deborah has also been a Non‑Executive Director on the boards of NHS North Central London Primary Care Trusts until 2013, serving on the Audit Committees and also reviewing the development of Clinical Commissioning Groups. She serves on Employment Tribunals, judging employment disputes, and is a Lay Member of the Health and Care Professions Council’s Fitness to Practise Panel, hearing complaints against individual health and social care professionals. Speaking on her appointment Deborah said, “As the Board Member responsible for liaising with local Healthwatch in London,

I’m looking forward to learning more about the range of Healthwatch across London, their challenges, successes, how they see their role developing, and what part their link with Healthwatch England could play in that.”

“Joining Healthwatch England is a real opportunity to be involved in the development of an effective national champion for all of us who use health and social care services, so it complements very well what we’re doing in Enfield. I think it’s also a feather in the cap of Healthwatch Enfield that I’m being asked to act as the liaison point between local Healthwatch boards in London and the board of Healthwatch England.”

“A rose by any other name would smell as sweet” It is not just Shakespeare that knew the beauty of the scent of roses. Now you can appreciate the sights and scents of roses at the Gardens of the Rose in St Albans. Run by The Royal National Rose Society, these gardens offer five acres of stunning displays of tens of thousands of roses, both traditional and contemporary, complemented by a huge selection of companion plants.

The Royal National Rose Society is not only the world’s oldest specialist plant society but the foremost global authority on the cultivation and care of the rose. Established in 1876, the RNRS now has a membership that spans the globe and includes many affiliated horticultural societies and research libraries, as well as thousands of roseloving individuals.

Today, the RNRS is best known for its flagship Gardens of the Rose at Chiswell Green in Hertfordshire, on the outskirts of St Albans. Opened 50 years ago by the then Patron of the Society, the Princess Royal. Visiting the gardens during the summer season will enable you to see the gardens at their best, displaying many historic and modern varieties of rose in different settings and planting arrangements that include different types of companion planting.

EN MAGAZINE - issue 62 June 2014

Not to be missed, the 72 arch pergola in the centre of the gardens, the ornamental fish ponds, the heritage beds displaying the history of some of the now modern day varieties and a large selection of

roses from some of the UK’s premier growers.

After spending time in the gardens, why not relax in the Tea Room with a fresh sandwich or cream tea and enjoy the splendid surroundings of the patio area within the grounds.

The Gardens of the Rose underwent a complete refurbishment in 2006 with the initial assistance of garden designer Michael Balston and more recently with Hampton Court Palace Flower Show Gold Medal winner Julian Tatlock Landscape & Garden Design. New roses, herbaceous perennials, spring bulbs, shrubs and water features set amid contrasting lawns and paths now provide substantial interest. The Gardens of the Rose show the very best that the rose world has to offer but, as with any garden, they are continually evolving.

Public Opening Season The Gardens are open from 7th June - 3rd August, seven days a week, 10am - 5pm (last entry 4pm). Tea room open from 10am - 4:30pm. Admission Adults - £6* Groups -£5pp (25 people or more) Children (under 16) - Free Members - Free Dogs on leads are welcome. *No concessions.

Hive of activity at the Civic Offices A housing officer from Hertsmere Borough Council has installed a hive on the roof of the Civic Offices and recently transferred a colony of bees to their new home. “I have been bee keeping for a number of years and have other hives at a farm,” says Andrew Chittenden. “But I am excited to be establishing a hive on the roof of the Civic Offices. I moved the bees in towards the end of April and they have settled in well.” The beehive, which was installed in March and became home to bees on 22 April, contains 11 frames with 75,000 cells and will house between 60,000 to 100,000 Italian honey bees, the favoured bee stock for beekeepers in this country.

And if you are concerned about being stung outside the Civic Offices, there is no need to worry; Italian bees are known for their gentle ways. Andy adds: “By nature honey bees are very docile and will not sting unless they are protecting their hive or feel threatened. Being approximately 30 feet up on the roof of the Civic Offices, they are of no risk to anyone.”

The bees should produce one or two crops of honey a year, harvested during the year, and the amount of honey produced generally depends upon the health of the bees, the weather and the forage available to them. Some of the flower borders around the Civic Offices, which have been replaced as part of the Civic Office reception refurbishment,

Local News and Events very enjoyable hobby and the challenge is helping the bees to survive against many odds, and the honey is a tasty bonus.” will be planted with bee friendly plants, thanks to our Parks Department.

“The bees will fly up to a mile and a half to collect nectar and pollen to feed their young and to turn into honey. We have beautiful parks and open spaces locally, so our bees will have a rich and varied local diet,” continues Andy. “During late spring, summer and early autumn I inspect the hives weekly to make sure the hive is well, the queen is safe and there are eggs, brood and stores. If you don’t check them weekly during the swarming season some of the bees may leave!

“The rest of the year things slow down, so I check them every couple of weeks to ensure the hive is intact and safe. It is a

Chief Executive of Hertsmere Borough Council, Donald Graham adds: “A full risk assessment was completed before the swarm was installed in their new home in April, which has made the Civic Offices a genuine hive of activity. The bees are fortunate to have so many award winning parks and beautiful open spaces on their doorstep.”

Honey bee hives installed on urban roof tops are becoming increasingly common. There are hives on the Victoria and Albert museum, Tate Britain, Tate Modern and at Fortnum and Mason’s in London. Urban bees have a better source of forage than those in the countryside who may be restricted by large fields of the same crops, and little choice.

Become a life saver Volunteer as a Community First Responder Enfield, Edmonton & Haringey residents can become St John Ambulance volunteer community first responders operating alongside the London Ambulance Service in their area and help to save local lives. London Ambulance Service (LAS) reach the majority of the most seriously ill patients within eight minutes of a 999 call, but if an “on call” volunteer in the next street has the basic skills and equipment they are dispatched from their own homes in their own cars at the same time as an ambulance and can often give help to a patient

before the LAS crew arrives. This can make a big difference in saving a life. Community First Responders (CFR) have been running in the area since 2009 as a partnership between London Ambulance Service and St John Ambulance. Every volunteer is trained to manage emergency situations and use basic life saving techniques.

The Enfield, Edmonton and Haringey CFR unit is endeavouring to increase its number of volunteers in order to cover more of the area for longer hours.

David Forward, an active responder in Enfield and the unit manager for Enfield, Edmonton and Haringey areas, said “I started responding after doing a First Aid at Work qualification with St John Ambulance as it gave me an opportunity to use the skills that I had been taught. I can assure you of the reward and pleasure that you feel when you see someone out and about in the street, when you know that you helped them or even saved their life.” No prior knowledge or experience is required as every first responder goes through extensive practical first aid and basic life support training including how to use oxygen and an automated defibrillator. They are taught how to deal with serious conditions including cardiac arrest, chest pain, breathing problems, diabetic emergencies and the unconscious patients.

EN MAGAZINE - issue 62 June 2014

David said “Whilst on call, we carry all of the equipment that we need to deal with the emergencies that we are sent to. This includes carrying oxygen and a defibrillator, which shocks a heart that has stopped beating into life.”

John Carmichael, LAS Community Involvement Officer for Enfield and Haringey said “When someone’s heart stops beating every second counts and getting essential, basic life support to that patient as quickly as possible becomes a priority.”

“If someone living or working around the corner has the necessary skills and equipment, we can dispatch them at the same time as our own staff. These responders can often reach the patient quickly and greatly improve their chances of survival with a good quality of life” Volunteers should: be physically fit, work well under pressure, be a good communicator, have held a full driving license for at least two years, have access to a roadworthy vehicle and they will have to undergo a Disclosures and Barring Services (DBS) check. Anyone for Tennis ? Hazelwood Sports Club has just invested over £500,000 to expand its facilities, and can now boast six indoor courts during the winter months and four artificial clay outdoor courts. No other notfor-profit sports club in North London can provide the facilities that are now available at the Enfield club. The investment sees four tennis courts re-vamped with new floodlights and an artificial clay surface, making Hazelwood the only club in North London with this premier surface. The new surface is soft under foot and drains quickly allowing play to commence shortly after a downpour of rain. It is also very forgiving on older players’ knees and bodies. The highly anticipated new indoor air-hall can be erected in eight hours, and this will happen for the first time in October 2014. Inside will be three acrylic tennis courts with state of the art suspended lighting and heating. The new dome will come down at the end of March each year for the summer allowing players perhaps inspired by Wimbledon to dust off their racquets and play some tennis in the great British sunshine. The project began when the club recognized an increase in demand for indoor play in its current airhall from its own members and from players from other local clubs. This is the largest investment the club has

ever made in its facilities. Ray Waller, the Chairman of Hazelwood Tennis Club said: “This is a really exciting time for the club. We have a great community at Hazelwood. The project funding has been entirely raised by loans from our own members. “We hope that the new facilities will encourage more people to visit the club, whether they are keen players already, or looking to learn. We are happy to welcome anyone of any age and any ability. 8 “We are planning a series of open days over the spring and summer for people to come along and view and try these first class new facilities. Visit the website www. hazelwoodsportsclub.com for more information.” Hazelwood Sports Club prides itself in providing value for money, and not only specializes in tennis, but also features Kitts V2.indd 1 three squash courts and a gym. Tennis and squash coaching is available throughout the year for both adults and children from beginner to professional levels. The club hosts weekly fitness classes including everything from circuit training to Martial Arts. There is also an excellent bar and Hazelwood holds regular social events for its members.

Like film? Love Talkies!

Victoria Newmark-Jones checks out Talkies Community Cinema

A crowd of people spill out of the Dugdale Centre on a rainy Thursday evening. They are animated, making arrangements to meet again, catching up on gossip, discussing the film they have just seen. But this is no standard cinema visit. It is Enfield Town’s manifestation of a Palmers Green success story: Talkies Community Cinema.

Talkies is more than just movies. “We want our community cinema to be somewhere that people come to socialise as well as seeing great films,” David says. “Talkies seems to resonate with its communities in the way not experienced when people visit large multiplexes”.

year Talkies has also regularly screened at The Dugdale Centre in Enfield. Where raked seating, high definition projection and excellent sound systems make watching World Cinema a real treat.

Talkies has a varied approach to match a broad spectrum of interests. Some events include live music, others introduce filmmakers talking about their work, family events encourage children and parents to come in fancy dress and foreign language films are introduced by someone with a knowledge and passion for the subject.

The whole point, David stresses, is for people to feel that Talkies belongs to them and they can influence its direction. Regular discussion with the audience, calls for ideas and surveys promotes discussion, engages people and builds Talkies’ relevance. Through discussion, lots of ideas are planted as the seeds of future events. Some germinate quickly such as when Strictly Ballroom was shown, supported by a local Salsa Club who gave dancing lessons to the audience . Others take time, such as the screening this autumn of the classic silent film Nosferatu at the high Gothic masterpiece of Christ’s Church Southgate - accompanied by live organ music. It hasn’t all been plain sailing. “Naively, we thought we could just be fairly casual in the way that we organised Talkies. We soon leant that life was not that easy and we had a steep learning curve,” David explains, “A passion for film was not enough and we had to learn lots of technical stuff from projection to marketing and legal.”

David emphasizes that Talkies success is built on the amazing efforts of a large cohort of volunteers. “We have volunteers to introduce films, play live music, sort out projection, take tickets on the door, design posters, market events, sell tickets – the list goes on,” he explains.

The experience of a Talkies evening is quite different to commercial cinema. Ask the crowd outside the Dugdale centre. Instead of just hopping into the car to go home, people linger to chat and discuss. Moira Foster is a keen Talkies volunteer. “It is lovely to see people mingle like this,” she says. “And you can get to catch up on films you missed. Much more sociable than Netflix!”

Talkies is a great way to bring people together, David beams. “You too can have a cinema group in your own community,” he urges. “We are happy to advise you on how to do it!” For more on Talkies, including contact details, visit the website www. talkies.org.uk

Commemorating WW1 - A Local Perspective In the May issue of EN Magazine we reviewed the Enfield Museum exhibition ‘Enfield at war 1914-1918’ commemorating the centenary of WW1 at the Dugdale Centre. The exhibition takes a close look at how WW1 affected local people and uncovers some unique stories and experiences. EN Magazine met up with Jan Metcalfe, Museum Officer, to find out more about the exhibition and how they uncovered the local stories. “We started our search for local stories by asking local people to share their family’s histories and artefacts for our exhibition. We were overwhelmed with the amount of people who got in touch with family stories, letters, photos and other WW1 memorabilia.”

“As a basis for our research we also used the book ‘Enfield at War 19141918’ by Geoffrey Gilliam, which gave us a fantastic insight into local history during WW1. This book, by the former chairman of the Enfield Archaeological Society (first published in 1982) has now been updated to include lots of the new material that has been uncovered in the planning and development of the exhibition. Rewritten and edited by Ian Jones the book has

been republished jointly by Enfield Archaeological Society and Enfield Museum”

“It was the information and artefacts loaned by many local residents that uncovered so many of the stories and first hand accounts that we have been able to reproduce in the book and exhibit at the museum. Each account has been checked against historical records to be verified. Unfortunately some of the stories and accounts shared with us turned out to be family fables rather than factual or accountable so could not be used.” “From stories of heroism of the men that went to fight, to the effects on the families left at home, the changing roles of society, the hospitals that sprung up around Enfield to care for wounded, to the role of industrial Enfield, the Royal Small Arms Factory producing the Lee Enfield Rifle and the Ponders End Shell factory, the exhibition and book uncover the influence that Enfield had in WW1 and its effects on the area.”

exhibition to read them and find out about the real lives of the people at the time.”

“Part of the museums plans include open days, where members of the public can come along and meet one of the team, who will be on hand to answer any questions on the exhibition and also show some of the treasures that we have been unable to put on permanent display.” “Throughout the summer school holidays we will be hosting the Baby Rhyme Time and Toddlers Story & Play sessions, introducing younger members of the community to the exhibition with a selection of short stories and songs of the time.”

Community Share for Enfield Town FC Enfield Town Football Club have launched a Community Share issue, to help enable the club to achieve its vision of being an inclusive club for all and a social centre for the community, with a range of teams playing at the highest sustainable levels possible.

Club Chairman Paul Millington said “we are a very ambitious club, and in order to develop to the next level we must get better value for money from our regular income and running costs. In particular, we must aim to pay for the QEII Stadium Bar/Café, refinance existing loans and, and put

together a capital fund for future projects as quickly as is feasible”.

In November 2011 the club moved into the refurbished athletics stadium in Donkey Lane, won promotion to the Ryman Premier Division the following year, and has done well to stay in that division, attracting crowds around the 350 mark, on limited budgets. In order to progress both on and off the field, the club feel now is the right time to seek to raise capital to help ensure a firmer financial footing going forward. Paul Millington added “we have been lucky to have had such a dedicated fan base and committed sponsors since our formation in 2001, and have come a long way in a short space of time. But we are ambitious and now want to push the Club onto the next level.” There are more than 30 clubs owned and run by their supporters, from professional clubs in the Football League down to amateur clubs. Enfield Town was one of the original trailblazers upon its formation back in 2001.

12

EN MAGAZINE - issue 62 June 2014

James Mathie of Supporters Direct said “We think that football clubs like Enfield Town work well being owned collectively by the

communities that support them. Enfield Town FC has had great success since forming in 2001, and with the move to QE II Stadium they have a chance to really build the club in the community. The community share issue is a chance to widen the interest in the club and its facilities to ensure the club continues to grow sustainably” Community Share Schemes have been successful for other clubs such as FC United of Manchester, Wrexham and Portsmouth. Full details of the Enfield Town scheme, which has an initial target of £100,000 and will run for a year, full details on the scheme are available at www.etfccommunityshares.com Paul Millington concluded “These are very exciting times for the club. We hope that anyone from the local community with an interest in football, whether individuals, from business, or from other organisations such as sports clubs will support this scheme. In addition to developing our facilities to improve the quality of playing and spectating, we aim to increase the levels of participation in all club activities and improve standards of play for all our teams. Moreover, it is vital that we develop greater awareness of the club in the local community and we are hoping to forge new relationships in that area”.

Not To Old To Work More needs to be done to assist older people to return to work, says the founder of a Winchmore Hill-based care firm. Many of the staff at Home Care Preferred, a care agency based in Station Road, are over the age of 50, and many of the team have children. As planned state pension age hikes mean today’s young people will work until the age of 70 and beyond, managing director Ken Waterhouse believes mature workers will prove crucial, to Enfield’s economy and beyond. “The blend of experience and skills which more mature workers offer have proved key to the success of Home Care Preferred,” he explained. “Having a real variety of team members with a wide range of ages as well as different cultural backgrounds is essential to us in the care sector as we cater for people from different backgrounds and with specific preferences.”

Home Care Preferred ’s working practices reflects the company’s aim to attract not only older workers but mothers who are returning to work after having children too. Staff are offered flexible working patterns and do not necessarily need previous care experience as comprehensive inhouse training is provided.

“We have found that many of our older clients who would like our companionship services, request to have mature team members as they find it easier to relate to them, especially in conversation,” said Nav Dhar, head of care at the company.

58-year-old Alison Bensal from Winchmore Hill started working for Home Care Preferred after seeing an advert. Her son Jay is autistic so Alison needed a job which allowed her to take care of him as well as earn a living. She now works for the company on flexible hours. “The job has allowed me to meet a whole new circle of like minded people and given me back the independence I had felt was lacking,” she said. “Being part of a team like Home Care Preferred has been very good for my self-esteem.”

Nav went on to explain “We always want to speak to people who share our passion for care and we are currently actively recruiting new team members.

Anyone interested can either apply on- line at www.homecarepreferred. com or call us for an informal chat on 020 8364 3670”.

Local History in Hertsmere Did you know Hertsmere has three museums which all actively celebrate the borough’s rich history? They each offer all ages an interesting and fun look back into the past. Cllr Brenda Batten, Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Culture and Health, explained: “Residents might not realise that the council actually helps fund and support the borough’s local museums so that residents can learn about their town’s past now and in the future. Learning about the past is truly fascinating and can help instil a real sense of pride in where you live.”

Heritage and Museums Officer, Ruth Stratton, added: “Our museums have a lot to offer and I’d encourage everyone, whatever your age, to visit your local museum in the next few months – there’s lots of exciting things happening that you don’t want to miss out on!”

Elstree and Borehamwood Museum:

An exhibition celebrating 100 years of film and television in the area will open on 17 June. The special display will take over the entire museum and will run

until 13 September. Every Saturday during the exhibition you will be able to buy film merchandise in the foyer of 96 Shenley Road where the museum is based on the top floor. The exhibition forms part of a series of events in the town to commemorate the centenary when Neptune Studios first settled in the area in 1914. Keep up to date with the film centenary celebrations at www. elstreescreenheritage.org

Then October sees the opening of an exhibition commemorating the centenary of World War I, looking at what it meant for local people at the time. Museum Manager, Dave Armitage, explained: “We would like to stage an exhibition that aptly reflects the contribution and sacrifice of people from Elstree and Borehamwood, looks at what the area was like at that time and also shows how the Great War affected the local community.

“I’m sure many local people will have photographs and other memorabilia passed down to them from family connections and we would love to speak to them if they are willing to loan these items to the museum for a period of

time. This would help us create an exhibition that we can be really proud of and which informs and engages with all our different generations of visitors.”

Potters Bar Museum:

To commemorate the beginning of World War I, a special exhibition entitled ‘How did we get dragged into this?’ is opening in Potters Bar Museum at the beginning of July and will run for 6 months until January 2015.

Celebrating 40 Years Inclusion It was in 1974 that musician and composer Jo Collins met Mary Ward, a teacher and director. With a shared belief in harnessing the creativity in everyone and anyone, they started a theatre company – in a chicken shed! Mary and Jo had the same aspirations and the same passion – to be allowed to work with people of all ages and backgrounds – whether they are experienced or inexperienced, shy, wild or confident -and create exciting theatre. They believed that anyone who genuinely wanted to take part should be allowed to travel the wonderful journey of selfdiscovery and self-worth alongside their peers, but they needed somewhere to do all of this. Mary and Jo had been Enter Lady Elizabeth Byng from the Wrotham Park Estate, who attended their Church and offered Mary and Jo a disused barn on her grounds – a chicken shed. And so the story begins… Their creative process worked. More members joined as the chicken shed was replaced by further church halls. In the early 1980’s the company included, for the first time, a boy with cerebral palsy. “If we’re open to everyone, why is he the only one?” asked teenage members. Enter John Bull who ran Cheviots Children Centre in Enfield, and his pioneering approach on integration. He joined with Mary and Jo and Chickenshed became the first truly inclusive theatre company – open to everyone. Dame Judi Dench and Sir Trevor Nunn joined as pro-active Trustees. Chickenshed made its first CD, gained a record contract, performed in the West End and on Television and achieved an ever-increasing public profile.

1988 was a pivotal year when Lord and Lady Rayne met Chickenshed and Lady Jane Rayne became President. She introduced the work to the Princess of Wales who ‘got’ Chickenshed, heart and mind, from the start. As Royal Patron, she shared her time both personal and professional, and gave Chickenshed love, loyalty and unwavering support. When Enfield Council pledged land for a theatre,

it was Lord and Lady Rayne who tirelessly raised the funds to build it. In 1994 the company moved into their beautiful flexible space next to the Cat Hill Roundabout in Southgate. At the heart of the building sits the Rayne Theatre named after the family who turned a dream into reality. From this new home things really took off. 1995 saw Chickenshed’s first national tour – over two months, twenty

performers, five cities and twenty schools and enjoyed by over 5000 people. For Mary and Jo the concept of inclusion, that seemed so obvious at the start, is now an international movement. Every extraordinary piece of theatre created at Chickenshed shouts out the same thing – that anyone can thrive in an environment where everyone is welcome. These Little “Piggies” want to Look Good Every year as the sun comes out, so do our feet as we reach for those summer sandals and flip flops. As this time approaches so does my annual anxieties about the appearance of my feet. Hard skin, cracked heels and untidy nails – hardly a pretty sight. For many years I had promised myself a pedicure but embarrassment stopped me. This year I decided to bite the bullet so to speak. Having just had a baby I felt my poor feet were in need of some TLC urgently and, as a new mum, I could do with a little me time. So off I went to Emma Claire’s in Enfield Town. The iconic hairdressers also have spa facilities, in fact surprisingly expansive spa facilities.

I was warmly greeted as I entered the salon, offered a drink and asked to choose a colour from an extensive choice of colours from the Jessica range. Nicole, my beauty therapist, invited me upstairs to the treatment rooms where relaxing music, and soft lighting took me far away from busy Enfield below us. A warm foot spa awaited my tired feet and within

So, how can I ensure my feet are better looked after in the future? Regular pedicures, 4-5 weeks in the summer and 6 weeks in the winter, is ideal according to Nicole. She also advises soaking them in water with a few drops of tea tree oil, then smothering them in a rich moisturiser and wearing socks to bed when hard skin is returning. Emma Claire’s has a regular clientele, including men, doing just this to protect their feet. Loyalty schemes and special offers are available too, making this luxurious pampering even more affordable. My feet were massaged in a thick, rich cream which sent me into a deep relaxation as Nicole explained that Emma Claire’s uses a unique range of Pevonia products. Pevonia is a American based brand that is completely natural. The salon chose Pevonia and Jessica because of their quality products and results. Additionally, Pevonia is made with organic extracts and maintains a harmonious balance with precious resources by offering fully recyclable, completely biodegradable or reusable packaging, and refrains from any form of animal testing. minutes Nicole not only washed away the stresses from my feet but my anxieties and embarrassment too. Relaxing in the comfortable chair, my toes were smothered with cuticle softener, my feet exfoliated, nails trimmed and filed. Nicole also expertly filed my feet, removing all the unsightly hard skin as she explained that our feet are often neglected yet we put the through so much –shoved inside thick socks and boots in the winter, squeezed into heels for nights out, sweating in trainers as we work out – daily they take a pounding and hold a lot of stress.

Getting My Body Ready for the Beach

Health and Beauty

by Alan Harvey

Summer is just around the corner and I wonder if like me you have already made plans for a summer holiday. The thought that in just a few months time I will have a couple of weeks in a different country, enjoying the hot weather sunshine and beach brings a smile to my face. But for me this also brings back the yearly problem of what will I look like on the beach! Do I really want to stroll across a beach not only looking extremely white on arrival but carrying a few extra pounds?…. ok its more than a few extra!

I know that with careful planning and sunscreen I will soon turn the white skin to a nice tan but what am I going to do about the extra pounds?

Over the years I have tried all sorts to make sure that I look and feel good on the beach. From diets, fad eating, detoxing and slimming clubs to running and memberships of gyms. But it is nearly always the same, each year I am left with the same problem as I consider what to wear on holiday to hide the bulge I do not want to share.

Now diets have never really worked for me, I enjoy my food too much and I must admit to partaking in a tipple or two at a local hostelry or more occasions than perhaps I should. Gym memberships always start with good intentions, the monthly fee I use as an encouragement as I do not want to waste money. Before long the will power to go a few times a week to get value for money wanes and I am spending £15 or £20 to visit a gym once a week and before long I am cancelling another membership

Now I did find a solution that worked for me a few years ago when I paid for personal training as an extra to my gym membership. Using a personal trainer I found gave me the extra drive and motivation to work out, as well as, and I believe more importantly, my trainer helped me to develop a workout programme specifically designed for me, showing me how to correctly use the fitness machines and exercise to get the best results. By

having the trainer with me as I worked out they were able to correct errors in how I was using equipment and exercising. They also gave me continued motivation to keep me performing to the peak of my ability to achieve my aims. But do I want to sign up to an annual gym membership knowing that I will after a while be wasting my money to find a personal trainer?

That was why I was pleased when a friend told me about Jennifer of Trinity Health and Fitness, who runs personal training and fitness from her own private gym. There are no annual fees for me to sign up to just selection of fitness packages to chose from which are all personalised to the individual. Jennifer has many years experience in fitness and nutrition having been a world record weightlifter as well as teaching Sports/Physical Education to aspiring

With her knowledge and experience gained throughout a sporting and teaching career Jennifer has the necessary experience to be able to provide a service that can target areas of fitness and strength improvements alongside healthy living and weight loss. The exercise space is situated in a small private gym in the confines of Jennifer’s garden. It is large enough to accommodate a few people at a time and its uniqueness is that the gym has no mirrors. Jennifer says she has found this to be an invaluable factor for customers who are conscious about their weight. She aims to provide support and motivation to specific exercise prescriptions, addressing mindsets and offering clearly defined targets in order to achieve realistic goals. She also has the facilities that enable her to travel out to the customer if necessary. At my first meeting with Jennifer she carried out an assessment of my current level of fitness and discussed what my aims from the training are, allowing her to develop a personal training plan for me. So with shorts and trainers on I headed to the gym for my second session.

Now I had forgotten just how mean personal trainers are and Jennifer is no exception. There is none of the “oh I have done 8 sit-ups rather than 10, that will do” or “48 seconds is nearly a minute.” No, Jennifer is on hand to encourage me to go on for the entire 60 seconds or push on to do the set of ten exercises, then to start the next exercise and continue, correcting me when I am in the wrong position so as to

18

EN MAGAZINE - issue 62 June 2014

get maximum benefit from the exercise and not to injure myself. After the first full on session with Jennifer I was out of breath and aching all over. Session two I managed to do more exercises but did not feel as worn out afterwards. Following sessions three and four and I am starting to manage to hit the targets and feel improvement in my fitness not just in my time training with Jennifer but also while out and about. That walk up the hill with my dog is getting easier and easier. And best of all I have had to go down a hole on my belt. I feel already that the extra pounds are starting to go and I say this year “bring on the beach” as I am sure I will be ready for the shorts!

Holiday

Exotic, Adventure and Romance with a Surprise All in one Holiday Can you imagine the pressure of having to choose the destination for your honeymoon and add a twist as a surprise for your husband to be? Now add to that the fact that you have been working in the travel sector for 14 years and are now the owner of your own independent travel agency, how can you possible not get the perfect honeymoon destination? This is what happened when I tried to do just that.

Where to start? Having worked in travel since leaving school and having already visited a wide variety of destinations choosing the right honeymoon was never going to be easy.

I decided that I wanted the destination to be somewhere that would work for both of us. Having spoken to my fiancé we came up with a list of what we wanted: hot, sunny, relaxing, beautiful beaches, breathtaking scenery, quality hotels, so not much to find! So I headed in to the travel agency with our wish list and set my staff the challenge of finding a location that would not only fulfil the wish list but also bring a smile to the face of their boss. After much deliberation with the team, I decided on the Seychelles, which I believe matched all of the criteria we had set out. The Republic of the Seychelles covers 115 islands slightly south of the equator off the east coast of Africa approximately 10 hrs flying time from the UK. The largest and most famous islands are Mahe, Praslin and La Digue are part of the so called “Inner Islands” and together with other small neighbouring granite islands they belong to the oldest islands in the world.

So I set about my sneaky surprise honeymoon. My fiancé liked the look of the Seychelles and it worked for our list of must haves. I proceeded to book our own exclusive piece of haven the resort of Sainte Anne, unspoilt beaches galore set to a stunning island backdrop. As for my fiancé, he thought we were going here and we were, but with a detour enroute first. Arranging tailor made itineraries is my specialty so I checked out the flight routes that could take us on to the Seychelles so I could find destinations that we could fit in enroute and came up with.

Zambia and a the Victoria falls

Bingo ... Neither of us had been to the Zambia and Victoria Falls is 1 of the 7 wonders of the world.

I found the ideal location in the Tongabezi Lodge a romantic hideaway on the banks of the Zambezi River just upstream of Victoria Falls. A selection of houses and cottages, each beautifully styled with furniture and embellishments from all over Africa make up the Tongabezi Lodge. You can dine beside the river or on their private terrace. Privately owned and run,

But without telling my fiancé I had decided that we must do more, see more and experience more! So I set about choosing other destinations that gave not only relaxation but added a little adventure too. Well getting married would be the start of the adventure of our life together and I wanted to extend this into the honeymoon.

Tongabezi combines an exclusive ambience offering the legendary warmth and hospitality of the people of Zambia. Monkeys frequently visit the lodge and from time to time they also have hippos and elephants. The nearby Mosi-Oa-Tunya Park can offer exceptional rhino, buffalo and elephant sightings.

Tongabezi seamed to offer the adventure that I was looking for as the surprise part of the trip. I then hit upon a potential problem that would let the surprise out; to visit Zambia we both needed some injections. How could I get my fiancé to have these with out telling him about the additional destination?

EN MAGAZINE - issue 62 June 2014 19

Holiday So I phoned the doctors to arrange for my fiancé and my injections, they asked me to make an appointment for my own and they would discuss his. So I did. The doctor loved my surprise idea so I booked my fiancé an appointment with him thinking you needed these injections for the Seychelles, a simple couple of jabs which last 10 years will be fine, as long as the nurse doesn’t let it slip and tell him where were going. It worked

I really wanted to tell my fiancé on our special day, and somehow managed to contain my excitement until in the car going to our reception. I had kept it quiet and booked all the arrangements with out him knowing. Sneaky, but it was time to see his reaction; I gave him the printed itinerary in an envelope. “Zambia that’s not in the Seychelles.”

“No it’s not, we are going there first,” I replied. He was stunned speechless but really pleased and very excited, it had defiantly been worth all the planning. Our trip to Zambia took us to Tongabezi Lodge was everything I could have hoped for.

We stayed for 2 nights in the honeymoon house and 2 nights in the tree house, amazing sunsets and lots of daily activities to choose between. We visited the national park and went walking on the island to see the crocodiles and the elephants. As well as the outstanding Victoria falls. Monkeys visited us whilst having our sundowner drinks. An experience I will never forget and yet we still have a week in the Seychelles to enjoy.

Sainte Anne Resort & Spa

After landing into Mahe we caught the boat from the jetty to the resort of Sainte Ann. A stunning resort, offering 3 amazing beaches on the Island, luxury villas with private plunge pools or a roomy villa, which is what we had booked, overlooking the gardens.

Breakfast out on the terrace each day or a stroll down to ‘L Abondance’ for a buffet breakfast option offered the perfect start to the day. A short boat ride from Sainte Anne gave us the opportunity to visit the islands of La Prasline and le Digue.

Each villa has bikes to get around the island which we loved using everyday, so as well as relaxing we could feel good and keep fit. Dinner was a tricky choice each evening, choosing from between 4 restaurants was the biggest decision each day. Apart from on my birthday when my fiancé got a bit or revenge on me organizing the surprise trip to Zambia when he arranged for dinner on the beach.

A truly memorable trip.

“As an independent travel advisor I was able to organise a trip that was tailor made to suit our dreams. This is something I have been doing for customers for years. Skin Care

Mad dogs and Englishmen … … go out in the midday sun, according to Noel Coward. Well, there’s no denying our national obsession with baring our winter-pallid bodies to the elements at the first hint of sunshine. Why do we do it? Because of the sheer pleasure of the warmth of our nearest star on your upturned face. Because sun, sand and sangria are the components of a precious holiday and you don’t want to waste a second of it, so the moment large yellow object appears in sky, you’re out there enjoying it. Summer’s here and you’re claiming your share. Bring on the rays.

It’s not all plain sailing, however. Apart from the fact that many Brits have the sort of complexion that can freckle in a moonbeam, skin that has been safely cocooned in umpteen layers of protective clothing since last September can be in for a bit of a shock when it’s suddenly exposed to the sunshine. If you’re not careful, you can burn before you have time to say ‘Blister!’ and then you’re looking at prickly heat, peeling skin, rashes and a nose as red as a Strawberry Mivvi. It isn’t attractive. However ripped your torso or bikini-ready your body may be (or not, in our case, but there may be some of you out there who do fit into these categories), you won’t look or feel your best if all you can do when someone brushes a finger against your skin is scream ‘Ouch! My sunburn! Get off!’ Just so you know the potential pitfalls of summer loving, new research commissioned on behalf of SPF pill company Colladeen reveals the following: Common places to burn 1 2 3

in the sun, choose a sunscreen with SPF 30 and a UVA circle logo and/or four or five UVA stars. Apply plenty of sunscreen before going out in the sun, and reapply every two hours and straight after swimming and toweldrying. Keep babies and young children out of direct sunlight. Amanda Elias, beauty expert and founder of Bravura London, offered EN her top tips for a skin-friendly summer.

‘The first thing you want to think about is sun protection. The sun is the main cause of premature skin ageing, which can leave your skin dull, dry, wrinkled and with brown spots. Protect all exposed skin with a broad spectrum Sun Protection Factor of at least 30, preferably a mineral SPF which acts as an instant sunblock. Look for a product that’s waterproof, and don’t forget your lips, ears and the back of your neck. Reapply frequently. ‘You may know about cleansing, exfoliation and moisturising your face, but do you spend as much TLC on your body? Ensure you exfoliate at least twice a week and, if possible, slather yourself daily in your favourite body lotion.

And the reason for this? One in five of us don’t apply any sunscreen, one in six of us apply it but don’t use enough, and one in 12 apply it but miss a spot. You have been warned… The way forward for summer is simple: Plan, Protect, Repeat. Plan your summer skin care schedule, put it into operation, and keep on doing it. Comedian Michael McIntyre described being asked about his own skin regime in a department store: ‘Every morning I wake up and I have skin. That’s it,’ he said. But that’s far from being ‘End of.’ The British Skin Foundation recommends protecting your skin with clothing, and don’t forget to wear a hat that protects your face, neck and ears. Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm, and when you’re

EN MAGAZINE - issue 62 June 2014 21

Skin Care ‘If you find your skin flushes when you get hot, keep a refreshing water spray or toner spray to hand to spritz your face and neck when you feel yourself overheating. Avoid wearing perfume on your skin; when the sun hits the areas of skin that contain perfumes, it can cause irritation. Fragrance your hair by spraying your hairbrush, then brush through your locks. Every time you swish your hair, you’ll be surrounded by a beautiful fragrance. ‘Sun and lip gloss aren’t a good combination. Remember the days of baking in the sun covered in baby oil? Same thing. Get yourself a good lip balm that contains an SPF. There are plenty out there that have colour, or you can line your lips with a lip pencil and then top with a clear SPF balm.

‘If you have parched skin, intensely nourish it with an oil such as jojoba, which won’t block your pores. For sunburnt skin, help the healing process with pure aloe vera gel and apply 3 – 4 times per day.’

Amanda also recommends maintaining hydration levels by drinking two to three litres of liquid per day (not, alas, coffee or cocktails, so easy on the Sangria, guys). EN also took some skincare in the sun advice from Dr Howard Murad, dermatologist, pharmacist and Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine (dermatology) at UCLA. He emphasised the importance of reapplying sunscreen regularly, and making sure that you’re applying it regularly enough: ‘For each sunscreen application, apply one ounce of sunscreen (equal to a shot glass) to the entire body and face daily and continuously reapply when out in the sun for long periods of time. If you plan on swimming or being in water, apply water resistant sunscreen every 40 to 80 minutes for optimal protection.’

Dr Murad went on, ‘Wear sunglasses! There are many factors that contribute to fine lines and wrinkles forming around your eyes, and one of those factors is facial expressions. This includes squinting, which happens just about every time you step out into the sun. Always wear sunglasses in bright light – even if you’re just walking down the road, you’ll be preventing the signs of ageing and wrinkles around your eyes.’ As if we needed another excuse to go accessory shopping… Sarah Vittachi

Building a Network to Grow Your Business

Business

Running your own business has never been seen as the easy option. You probably have great products and services to offer customers, but how do you attract them. You may be using business cards, a website, advertising, email campaigns, posters, flyers, facebook and twitter, but have your tried networking? The value of a business networking group cannot be overstated when you’re starting a business or promoting an existing one. Business networking is an effective marketing method for developing sales opportunities and contacts, based on referrals and introductions - both face-to-face at meetings and gatherings, or by other contact methods such as phone, email, or social and business networking websites. A business network group is both a route to market for you, and a marketing method. Business networking offers a way to reach decision-makers, which might otherwise be very difficult to engage. In addition, business networking brings with it the added advantage of recommendation and personal introduction, which are very powerful for developing business opportunities.

Business networking is a way to make the maxim, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.” work for you.

There are many organizations that offer networking groups and from highly organized and structured meetings to the more informal business lunches or coffee meetings, it’s about finding the right one for you. Adrian Cohen Sterlings Ltd Chartered Accountants Gold Table member since 2009

I was one of the founding members of the Gold Table Business networking group. Myself, and some other business professionals, who met as members of another networking group had become disillusioned with the very regimented rules and regulations of that group. It

appeared to us that the group was about the benefits to the bigger organisation than the individual members.

We wanted to create a group that focused on the benefits of helping the members above the enforcement of the franchise rules. That is not to say we do not have rules for the group. We also wanted to run the group by the group.

Rather than fees going to pay for a franchise, we wanted the fees to cover the costs of the group and to be used to the benefit of all the members, but not to make money for any individuals. In this way we could reduce the costs of membership for our members but still offer an effective networking environment. Seven years later and the group are still going strong. We have seen members come and go but we still have a strong group helping each other to grow our business through referrals and advice between the members.

As an accountant, you can imagine I am very keen on watching where my company’s money is spent, and fortunately Gold Table continues to be a good investment for us. We cannot spend all our time looking for new prospects but realise without them our business will not survive. Fortunately members of the group have not only become clients themselves but have helped us grow by introducing businesses, friends and family members to us. Steve Thorn RTA Mortgages Gold Table member since 2013

Over the last few years the mortgage market has undergone a lot of changes. New rules from the Financial Conduct Authority have had an impact on who can sell mortgages and financial services.

Traditionally the banks and building societies were seen as the best route to find a mortgage, just pop along to your high street and you would be able to find a deal. However banks and building societies are restricted to selling only their own mortgage products. In fact many advisors who claim to be independent are often tired in with preferred suppliers and networks. As an independent mortgage advisor it is my role to keep up to date with all the deals available on the market to offer the best advice to my customers.

With so much time spent meeting and advising clients time to find new customers is always an issue. We do not have the name or reputation of a high street bank or building society, but we want people to come to us and trust our advice. Fortunately for me, as a member of Gold Table I have been able to grow my client base. I have got to know the other members of the group and through the weekly meetings I have been able to demonstrate my knowledge of the mortgage market. This in turn has meant that the groups’ members have been able to introduce me to friends and family who are looking for mortgage advice. The personal introductions and recommendations from the group mean that I am already seen as a trusted advisor when I turn up to a meeting. Daniel and James Field Electrical Services Gold Table member since 2012

When we set up our company one of the biggest challenges we faced was getting customers to trust us. Too many people have watched television programmes like Rouge Traders to trust a new company. At first we

Business relied on friends and family to help get us business and the few contacts we had made while doing our apprenticeships. But we need more.

A business associate who told us how well it was working for him in finding new business invited us along to Gold Table. We went along not convinced it would be right for us but wanted to see for ourselves.

After visiting a couple of times we decided to join and have not looked back. The group has helped introduce us to lots of new business opportunities. As we are being referred from a by a member of the Gold Table the people we are going to see already have an element of trust in that we will do a good job, which we always will. But the Gold Table has offered us more than just quality business referrals and introductions. Members of the group have been able to give us advice on how to grow and expand our business from accounting and legal to marketing, advice which we have been able to implement to help grow our business and our reputation. The Gold Table Network is just one of the many networking groups in the area but has proven to be very successful in helping its members grow their businesses. The principles and techniques of business networking are mostly common sense. Many of the behavioral principles apply also to business and relationships generally, and specifically to selling, managing, coaching and facilitating.

Networking is not about selling, but rather developing relationships that can lead to sales or referrals. The idea is to get to know people and allow them to get to know you. Often, people approach networking with the hope of making a sale or getting a client after one visit to an appropriate group. That’s not how it works. People do business with those they know and trust and it can take time to build up that knowledge and trust. So approach a networking event without any expectation of getting new business. Instead go with the idea of meeting new people or schmoozing with those you’ve already gotten to know. Be prepared. Bring plenty of business cards, but only give them to people who show a real interest in what you do. Brochures or printed postcards can also be effective. Also, craft a short description of what you do — no more than 10 or 15 seconds. Ask questions and listen. You don’t have to talk a lot

about what you do in order to find potential customers. Rather, ask people you meet questions about them and their business, then listen carefully to their answers. Find points of commonality that you can bring into the conversation.

Follow up. If you make a good connection with someone, after the event, send a note saying how much you enjoyed meeting them. If appropriate, send an article or some kind of information that they might find helpful. Do not add them to your mailing list without their permission. Networking is a process, not a one-off event. Take the time to develop relationships with people who interest you. Be proactive and invite someone to a one-to-one meeting so you can get to know them. Shared Workspace… The Wonders of Working Collaboratively If you run a small business you’re bound to have heard a lot of talk lately about ‘co-working’ and ‘shared workspace environments’. Collaborative working seems to be the current trend for small and growing companies, especially freelancers, but how exactly can working in a shared office environment benefit your business? We’ve put together a list of the Top 10 Benefits of Working in a Shared Office Facility:

1.

Never feel alone

Freelancing and working from home can often make you feel isolated with the lack of people interaction. Everyone needs a boost now and again and, whether

it’s a friendly face to chat to about work or some light humour, working in an office with other professionals will make you feel part of a community which will reduce any feeling of isolation.

2.

Try before you buy – and save money

Shared workspace facilities cost much less to rent than renting an office of your own – fact. Particularly, if you’re a small and growing business working from home but not yet sure as to whether you’re ready for your own office, co-working facilities are a great way of taking your business to the next level without having to take on risky overheads. What’s more, a number of shared workspace providers offer a ‘try before you buy’ scheme where you can test out the environment for yourself first for a limited time before you pay for the usage. Shop around to see what trial deals are available.

3.

Feel inspired by working in a stylish office

Co-working spaces tend to be very trendy and modern – often in locations that would normally be beyond a small business’ budget. Working from a visually pleasant environment can do wonders for creative inspiration.

4.

Network every day

Every day you’ll be meeting new people at the office local businesses that are potential customers, suppliers and partners. We all know that the available time for networking is very limited for small business owners – working from a shared office gives you the opportunity to network every day in a relaxed environment.

5.

Location – be in the right place for you and your clients

When choosing a shared workspace to base yourself from, it’s important to select somewhere that is not only convenient for yourself to get to but also for your clients. Co-working facilities tend to be located in places with excellent transport links so both you and your clients can easily get there.

6.

Access to on-site meeting rooms and professional facilities

Some shared workspace facilities are situated in business centres that have professional meeting room and reception services available too. It’s always

Business

important to project a polished image for your business and if you need to arrange meetings, you will have a range of professional services on your doorstep - much more business-like and safe than having a potential customer come to your home.

7.

No commitments or tie-ins

The majority of packages available at co-working facilities are flexible and on a pay-as-you-go basis. Renting an office usually comes with a contract and various tie-in clauses and notice periods. The beauty of shared workspace facilities is that you can come and go as and when you need to use the workspace - at your convenience. You can stop using the facility at any time without the worry of incurring penalties.

8.

Productivity boost

Surrounding yourself with other entrepreneurs that are hard at work can also help you focus and, ultimately, boost your productivity. Everyone has good and bad days – being around people that share similar goals and aspirations can help your motivation levels, especially

when you’re feeling low on energy.

9.

Cut additional office overheads like broadband and printing

Shared workspaces help you to reduce your costs on the amount of common office overheads such as broadband and printing by offering flexible packages that include all of these costs without having to be bound by any contracts! You’ll be able to use these facilities at your convenience.

10. Get your work/life balance in check

Working from home can often make it difficult to switch off from work after hours – often causing relationship problems with family and friends. Working from an external location where you can switch off after walking out of the building can help you keep your work/life balance in check – giving you a much healthier routine and lifestyle (less head ache too!).
