Designindia was founded in 2002. It was started as a platform for interaction for the design community in India and abroad. Over the years it has grown into a forum spread over many social and professional networking domains, linking design professionals into an active, interactive and thought leading community.

Formula for Success Every person we see as successful must have a formula for success, and if that formula were revealed, all of us could be successful. All writers, editors, artists, designers, film makers and actors are successful. Cricket players too. There are tons of formulae floating around for sure. It is surprising that with such easy access to knowledge and formulae, so many of us do not become successful. Perhaps this has to do with how you define success. For some, success is about having a lot of money; for others it is about money+ fame, and then a combination of money+fame+happiness. For still others, it could also mean something completely different. I define success as being content, knowing you have enough of what you want. It works very well, because you can control your wants and define your success. It’s not as easy as it sounds of course, but you do have to give up comparisons. You have to focus on yourself and realize that you are already successful. Being successful brings a glow to your face that gives out very positive energy to the world. Being content and happy does the same. Learn to enjoy whatever you have in hand. Learn to handle the smallest of projects in prize winning ways. Believe designers who tell you that it is possible to create an award winning project in your head before you lift a finger. Because that’s where success lives. In your head. Sudhir

After an exciting career with some of India’s leading start-ups, Sunit Singh Sehgal has now slipped into an advisory role where his experience truly counts

Tell us about your journey in design. SS: While pursuing a BFA at Sir J. J. School of Art, and later the Master of Design program from Industrial Design Center, IIT Mumbai, I started taking on projects ranging from murals and commissioned artwork to print design and motion graphics. After completing design school in 2003, I ran a design firm with a friend for about a year. By 2005, I went on to work with a small Mumbai-based boutique design firm, Paper Plane, where I designed websites and web applications for clients in both India and the US. Along the way, I also worked on burrp.com which was one of the earliest online local restaurant guides in India. I then moved to Bangalore to join Yahoo! - which was a very short stint, less than a year. I joined Cleartrip in 2010, where I did some of my most significant work. It was a time when mobile was just emerging as a platform. I got the opportunity to lead the design of the mobile web, followed by the native mobile apps and a major redesign of all the desktop products. As a designer, it was a dream to work on Cleartrip as it was, and continues to remain, one of India’s most loved products. After five exciting years, I moved on to join Ola in 2015, where I built and set up a design team from scratch. After about a year I decided to turn to consulting. I am a partner and co-founder at Design Capital, a design advisory firm in Bangalore through which we mentor design and product teams at various digital product companies. I continue to help the design and product teams at Ola and Cleartrip in an advisory capacity. 28  POOL #90

SEEKING MOVEMENT IN CLAY

‘Standing Wave’ (26 inches wide, 2016). Photo: Forrest Gander

When did the dancer discover a passion for clay? AB: When I moved away from dance to clay, I was leaving behind 13 years of training in Bharatanatyam, a complex classical Indian form, and five years of experience performing

as a professional dancer in a contemporary dance company. My body couldn’t keep up, and my mind was hungry to find another medium in which I felt I could exercise my creative faculties at large. Clay drew me to it; it was the medium that spoke to me.

How did formal education impact your career? TF: In the field of architecture, I believe education is as important as experience, and something that can’t be compromised. I have wanted to be an architect since I was in school in Al-Khobar (Saudi Arabia). I moved to my birthplace, Hyderabad, and did my BArch from CSIIT School of Architecture and Planning, Secunderabad. From day one, we were asked to think of ourselves as architects, and being an architect became an integral part of my personality. I began working during my undergraduate studies, and continued to work for a few years under different architects in Hyderabad and Mumbai. I was fortunate to receive a hands-on kind of education in the places I worked at. One of my mentors encouraged me to study further, and I did MArch in Architecture + Urbanism in the Design Research Lab at the Architectural Association in London, one of the most prestigious 48  POOL #90
