WEDDING PHOTO FINALISTS

WEDDING DAY DESSERTS

We asked wedding industry professionals and recent brides to submit photos for our first-ever cover contest, and the response was astounding. After selecting 17 finalists from more than 50 submissions, we factored in reader feedback with editorial discretion to choose the cover and runners-up featured in this issue.

When you slice through your wedding cake, you not only perform your first joint task as a married couple, but you also share a piece of your happiness with a host of family and friends. Here, local bakers offer tips regarding this delicious symbol of union.

44 WEDDING TIPS FROM MOM

26 A MODERN GIRL’S GUIDE TO WEDDING ETIQUETTE At the sake of sanity, a modern-day bride consulted the professionals in an attempt to blend tradition and taste in the name of holy matrimony. They answer what rules still exist, which ones you can break, bend and amend, and what’s more important on your big day than etiquette-based formality.

At ATLANTA DENTAL SPA we understand the link between the health of your mouth and your risk for major illness. We take the time to look for the “silent clues” so that we can help reduce our patients’ risks for disease and death. We help our patients improve surgery outcomes, take control of diabetes, reduce medications, and have healthier pregnancies.

Avoid Gum Surgery: AVOID the painful, bloody SCRAPING involved in deep cleaning, and possibly AVOID SURGERY by wearing an appliance that delivers oxygen to the deep gum pockets, killing the bad bacteria that cause gum disease.

Genetic Testing for Gum Disease and HPV: SIMPLE SALIVA Reverse Cavities Using Rinses: GROW BACK ENAMEL using patented rinses, gels and gum instead of having small cavities drilled and filled.

TESTS can show your genetic risk for gum disease and also your oral cancer risk which increases with exposure to HPV.

winners Last fall, we asked wedding industry professionals and recent

brides to submit photos for the cover contest of our wedding issue, and the response was astounding. We received more than 50 submissions, 17 of which made it into our first round of finalists on our Facebook page, where we asked for reader feedback. Fans showed up in droves to “like” and comment on their favorites, which we took into consideration along with editorial discretion to choose the image gracing the cover of this issue and four runners-up. (A few reader comments are featured on these pages. For our editor’s account of how we chose our cover, check out Points of View, page 6.) It was a difficult decision, as each and every finalist had winning qualities, but after much deliberation, we decided upon the photos in the following pages. wedding etiquette representing the unity. Whether you do the candle, the sand, or find another way to creatively recognize that idea, it’s important. The whole purpose of a wedding is joining two people together. Just make sure to match your vows to your setting and your theme. If the whole thing is on a casual afternoon, then you have the freedom to do a more casual ceremony,” she said.

But how do you decide what’s formal enough? “Let me say this — style doesn’t really pertain to etiquette,” Pranger clarified. “Etiquette is all about making people feel comfortable. Similar to the Golden Rule, it’s about the consideration of your guests. Think about how you’d feel in either setting and go with that.” So is there a happy medium to avoiding

the feel of a church service, but still allowing room for reverence? Thigpen reassured me with his process. “I stand by three simple ideas: personal, original and meaningful. If a ceremony is [comprised of] those three things, you can’t go wrong. I always ask, ‘What do you want your wedding to feel like?’ Then I say, ‘Okay … tell me more.’ The story, the vows, the ceremony … it all unfolds from there,” he said. Details, Details, Details The professionals’ interesting approach to the meat of the manners matter brings up an interesting point. I can have a wedding that feels like me, as long as it makes sense in the big picture. But with a big picture settled on, how does a bride make sure all of the little things add up to that same level of acceptable? Does it matter anymore if I pick my dress out first? What if it’s not fancy enough? “If you love the dress you picked, wear it!” Pranger said. “You might have to adhere to rules of your venue, but otherwise, it’s your day, your dream dress, that you paid for, that looks good on you — wear it!” Jakulski agreed, adding, “I feel like it’s just up to you. I was with a bride the other day who had something specific in mind, but when she tried this one gown on, she just knew that it was the dress. You have to go with that!” And for the boys? How do I make sure they can wear their style without accidentally looking like the Jonas Brothers? “Tuxedos have become more contemporary in the way of fit,” Guffey said. “We’re seeing them fit trimmer, with shorter coats, where all of a sudden, you’ve got a very classic tux that looks like it’s from a ’50s movie. It starts to look very contemporary. You have so much flexibility nowadays … your only limit is the personality of the people involved.” On to the even-more-detailed details like how do you decide on an appropriate set of stationery when, these days, you see

wedding etiquette everything from pockets to sing-a-longs to painted-on pieces? A former stationer, I am a bona fide paper snob, so knowing what’s out there, I need to know — what’s okay to use? “This is the first thing that comes to my mind when thinking about weddings and etiquette,” Pranger said. “It should be the most formal part. As far as printing, print whatever, on whatever, just make sure it is printed. It’s not about what they look like anymore, just that they go out on time and that they have all of the important information.”

“There is a new, unique meaning to this public declaration of love and the entire wedding is built around it. However you choose to do that is up for grabs. TYLER THIGPEN | And Now for the Vows

“You know, there are really all kinds of things being done these days,” Jakulski added. “Like I keep saying, it just depends on your style. I’ve seen some really fun, creative things done lately. The talent that’s out there in this industry is worth exploring.” Tips from Those-in-the-Know With etiquette answers for days, advice on what’s important and reassurance on the points of personality versus what’s custom, I’m left to ask only one more thing: What can I not forget? “Thank your guests. A must! Write those notes within six months,” Pranger said. Jakulski, with her nuanced nonchalance reiterated, “It’s whatever the bride and groom want. Do you want to get married in a barn? Kick your heels off and get married in a barn — there are some really gorgeous barns out there.” “It’s all about creativity,” Thigpen reminded. “There is a new, unique meaning to this public declaration of love and the entire wedding is built around it. However you choose to do that is up for grabs.” And finally, with the simplest point of all, Guffey said, “Think about the pictures. Do you want people to be able to tell exactly what year it was, or do you want something timeless?” Timeless, creative, considerate and fun — got it. Thanks to my professionals, I leave questions like “unity candle or sand?” by the wayside in favor of a fireless, mess-less path to the real meaning of marriage, defined by my fiancé and me. My own sanity is satisfied in the fact that at the end of my long (or short) walk down the aisle, there is but one rule: There simply are no rules that can’t be broken. PN

Cake Consider These Tips from Atlanta’s Bakers Before Choosing your Wedding Day Dessert

Like most girls, I spent many

childhood days conjuring up thoughts of my wedding day. I imagined that it would take place on a beautiful beach, that I would be surrounded by many loved ones, and that my grandmother would bake one of her legendary cakes. I don’t know about the rest, but I sure hope that last part proves to be true. Whether you make it a big celebration or a small gathering, the wedding cake will surely be a focal point of the reception. When you hold that knife hand-in-hand and slice through a beautifully decorated cake, you not only perform your first joint task as a married couple, but you also share

a piece of your happiness with a host of family and friends. Therefore, choosing the perfect cake should be done with careful consideration. Thankfully, local bakers have offered their tips regarding this delicious symbol of union. Turns out, you can have your perfect wedding cake — and eat it, too. Taste or Aesthetics? When Evin Dominguez, pastry chef and owner of Buckhead Bakehouse, was in culinary school, her mentor told her to steer clear of wedding cakes, but the artist in her kept pulling her back to these intricately

baked goods. “It incorporates what I was trained to do with what I love to do,” she said. And, according to her, a perfect cake should do the same — integrate both taste and aesthetics. “So many people either settle or think that the wedding cake isn’t going to taste good, so they don’t try to find the baker that’s really going to [make that

happen]. You want your guests to be happy when they see it, but also when they taste it,” Dominguez said. After all, it’s the taste that will leave the lasting impression, lingering on your taste buds long after the crumbs have been devoured. Kelly Smith-Blacha, who started making cakes as a hobby 12 years ago and now owns Kelly Kakes bakery in Roswell, claims that

the so-called fondant craze is something of the past. “Of course every bride wants a beautiful cake, but if it doesn’t taste good, then what’s the point?” Alongside three other bakers, SmithBlacha makes cakes with mouth-watering

flavors, such as her popular cream cheese pound cake with white chocolate icing and raspberry filling. In fact, when it comes to flavors, fruits seem to be all the rage. “[Brides] ask for it in strange combinations sometimes,” said Ramona Oskirka, owner

of both Unforgettable Wedding Cakes and Perfect Wedding Cakes in Marietta. Recently she made a four-tier cake that contained raspberry, mango, strawberry, pineapple and key lime fillings. Where aesthetics are concerned, simple elegance is key. “I think people are going more toward simplistic, modern designs,” Dominguez said. “A lot of pastel colors and rustic glamour are in … something that would look older and more rustic but is still clean and elegant.” And, according to Oskirka, scrolls, ribbons and monograms are gaining popularity as well. A Collaborative Endeavor Of course, when it comes to baking and decorating the cake, leaving it in the dependable hands of a chef is your best bet. The fun actually begins months prior when the bride-to-be and the creative baker she has chosen meet one-on-one to design a cake that is perfectly suited for the wedding. “I have lots of pictures of my own work, but when [brides] call to set the appointment for the tasting, I encourage them to bring in any pictures, sketches or anything they have found,” Smith-Blacha said. “It just gives me some sort of direction when I sit down with them because I can tell what kind of style they’re going to be leaning toward. Sometimes they come in with pictures and then they see something in my book and they completely go in the opposite direction.” If booking a year or more in advance, Smith-Blacha advises to continue looking. “They’re going to change their mind. They’re going to see [all kinds of different options] the more into the process they get. But if it’s closer to the date, we can pinpoint and nail it down pretty quickly,” she said.

“Ask any northerner about his preferred

In addition to having a change of heart when it comes to the design, the risk of forgetting what you tasted is there as well. Yet, booking too close to the wedding date can be even more problematic, and Dominguez recommends meeting with your baker anywhere from six to two months in advance. “If it’s less than two months, you’re really risking not being able to book,” she said. Regardless of how much time you have, be sure to come prepared to sit and sample a while, as tasting is crucial to choosing your perfect flavor or, if you want to be a little more adventurous, make that plural. “I have a sample platter that has 16 different flavors and 11 different fillings on it,” Oskirka said.

groom’s cake, and you most likely won’t get an answer. Simply put, it’s a Southern thing and a traditional Southern thing, at that.

A Cake for Him and Other Desserts Ask any northerner about his preferred groom’s cake, and you most likely won’t get an answer. Simply put, it’s a Southern thing and a traditional Southern thing, at that. Yet the groom’s cake is anything but an ancient concept. “[The grooms] need that one bit in the wedding that’s about them,” Oskirka said. In fact, an average of 18 to 20 percent of her customers make a cake order for the groom in addition to the wedding cake. Traditionally, these cakes would be made with chocolate and dipped fruit. Yet now it has become a personal preference in taste as well as design, providing a glimpse into the groom’s interests. “Guys usually either pick their dogs, their car or their sports team,” Dominguez said. “We’ve done Star Wars themes, gamer themes — really whatever their hobby is.” Added Smith-Blacha, “Sometimes they’re really into it. They try to have a little bit more fun with that cake than others.”

In addition to the groom’s cake, other delicacies tend to find their way to the table as well. “If they want something simple to offer their guests, the cupcake towers are a great way to give guests a variety of choices. You can have different flavors and they are a little bit more fun,” SmithBlacha said. Oskirka recently started making cake push-ups, a fun alternative (or addition) to the standard wedding cake. These miniature cakes sit atop a tiered cake stand. “If you’re lucky enough to find a niche in something new and unique, people seem to like that,” she said. As for the wedding cake … it’s here to stay. PN

BEST WEDDING TIPS FROM MOTHERS OF THE BRIDE

Though

the focus of any wedding is undoubtedly on the happy couple, handing over a child in marriage is a monumental occasion for Mom, too. With that in mind, we consulted our own mothers to offer up words of wisdom for the Big Day.

that you compensate them for their time. In our case, our compensation seemed quite small next to all the wonderful help we received. Our dear friend was the mother of two boys and had not had the opportunity to put her skills to use, and it served us all well!”

“Most importantly, this is your daughter’s day so make sure her wishes and desires come first. Don’t try to force your ideas on her. Stay calm even though you run into bumps in the road, which I can assure you, you will. You want her to look back on this day and remember it as one of the best days of her life … even if it does monsoon!”

Joan Edmonds, “If you don’t have a wedding planner, don’t be shy about asking your friends for help. We found that our friends who were gifted in decorating were not only willing to help but excited about doing so and did a very professional job. I would suggest
