always looked forward to the start of the school year, though the anticipation of pep rallies and passing notes to my friends was more enticing than the education part itself. Truth be told, I still get a little thrill at this time of year. Though school now starts during the dog days of summer, the onset of buses and back-to-school sales reminds me fall is just around the corner. With a birthday and a wedding anniversary in the month of September, how could I not love the upcoming season? For me, it’s a time for celebrating special occasions, and we’ve got plenty of ideas and inspiration for that in our inaugural Special Occasions Planner, too. I’m particularly enamored by the Picasso-inspired birthday party on this month’s cover. So what if it was intended for a 10-year-old girl? I think we all deserve to embrace the kid within — no matter how long we’ve been out of school!

into the topic of Back-to-School this month, I’m preparing to go back to school myself — not in a literal sense, but in the form of my 10-year class reunion. I can hardly believe it has been so long. Why, it seems like only yesterday I was haunting the halls of my high school. If I try hard enough, I can probably still remember my locker combination from senior year; surely an entire decade hasn’t passed since then? Perhaps social media is partly to blame for my denial; after all, thanks to Facebook, I now feel as if I know some of my former classmates better than I did when we crossed paths in the classroom. In any case, I find myself reminiscing about my school days a little more than usual lately. Call me crazy, but I always loved going back to school. As a kid, the night before the first day felt like Christmas Eve. I could hardly sleep, so excited to strap on my new backpack and board the bus for a day filled with Trapper Keepers and freshly sharpened pencils. Even in high school, I

In the harsh, oftentimes superﬁcial world of today, little is as fragile as the emotions of a teenager. During this pivotal age, many problems occur such as bullying or obesity that leave life-long scars on those subjected to them. Exposing and remedying these problems is the goal of a book turned screenplay titled “The Fat Boy Chronicles.” The brainchild of Atlanta resident Michael Buchanan and writing partner Diane Lang, the novel chronicles the troubles of an obese 9th grader who struggles to ﬁnd acceptance in the judgmental society around him. Lang Buchanan, as they are called as a team, both drew from their own experiences as teachers to create the main character, Jimmy Winterpock. The movie adaptation, directed by Atlanta’s own Jason Winn, brings the story to the big screen in hopes of reaching a wider audience and raising awareness of the bullying epidemic that faces America. After receiving positive reviews from across the country, the movie promises to show the dark side of the American teenager; a site rarely seen in the teen-movie culture of recent years. Executive Chef Andrew Brackner of Talk of the Town Catering & Special Events (talkofthetownatlanta.com) teamed up with Lauren Weems of Adorned Event Design to create a fanciful affair at Heritage Sandy Springs (heritagesandysprings.org). Inspired by Picasso’s quote “Every child is an artist,” each element of the party was custom-made to replicate a watercolor painting, from the birthday cake to the tablescape. For the décor, Weems used fun and funky flowers like exotic orange Pincushion Protea, orange and pink Campanilla roses and hot pink Celosia, which are currently in their prime in Georgia, along with decorative items like watercolored votives, vases filled with paintbrushes and custom art installations. For the menu, Brackner chose dishes that would carry out the pink-and-orange watercolor motif while appealing to both children and their parents. Non-alcoholic “shooters” in flavors such as watermelon, lime and mint, tomato bisque with mini grilled cheese, and ginger-mango with plantain chips and jerk chicken salad were served alongside fried green tomato sandwiches with sweet potato chips. For dessert, he crafted layered blueberry cream pie and lemon meringue pie in mason jars, as well as rice crispy “paint brushes” and “Watercolor Splash,” a fun drink featuring swirls of coconut, pineapple and strawberries. A make-your-own popsicle bar allowed guests to get artsy by mixing their own ingredients — yogurt, fresh fruit, chopped mint, lemonade and more – and freezing them in a mere 9 minutes with Williams-Sonoma’s Zoku Quick Pop Maker. But perhaps the greatest highlight for the younger guests were the doodle cakes by Melonie Stanger of For Goodness Cakes (forgoodnesscakes.net); each child received his or her own individual fondant-wrapped cake and a palette of edible paint to craft their own masterpieces. For the party favors, guests received a bundle of paintbrushes and a custom sketchbook by Jamie Wyckoff of Julia’s Poppies Design (juliaspoppies.com).

each week, the gym at First Redeemer Church in Cumming ﬁlls with a gaggle of girls eager to dance, tumble and cheer. The spirited bunch are members of The Flames special needs cheerleading squad, a team created by South Forsyth High School (SFHS) students Christine Rueger and Kristen Hopper to provide a fun after-school activity for young girls with disabilities. with her, but for the most part, the communication barrier doesn’t seem to be a problem. It’s obvious that the coaches and a group of volunteer helpers truly love spending time with these girls, and the mutual adoration is all the language they need as they play, laugh and dance together. At a recent summer practice, one team member showed off her cartwheel skills while another taught the group to do a forward roll on the gymnastics mat at the center of the room. Cheryl

When the school year starts, these practices will combine playtime with a healthy dose of hard work to prepare a routine for competitions sponsored by Atlanta-based Fellowship of Christian Cheerleaders, but the primary purpose of these informal practices is to refresh basic skills and engage in fellowship with the other girls.

Conquering Competitions The Flames started their ﬁrst season last year with a team of seven girls ages 6 to 18 with a variety of disabilities ranging from muscular dystrophy to Downs syndrome. “Kristen and I had volunteered together [in the past] with Special Olympics, and we both found a passion there,” Christine said. “We wanted to do something more to impact the community and help special needs children.” With Kristen’s experience in cheerleading with SFHS and another competition squad through First Redeemer Sports, a special needs team seemed like the natural choice.

“With cheerleading, anyone can be involved. It’s not like baseball or basketball where children need specific skills,” Christine said. “Cheerleading allows us to work around their skills and still teach new things … Plus, it’s fun and encouraging for them.” The team met to practice every Friday last fall to prepare for four local cheerleading competitions. Though Cheryl said it took some of the younger girls a little while to grasp the point, they were ready to perform by their first competition. “A couple weeks before our first competition, I thought, wow, we don’t have a routine,” Cheryl admitted. “We had a cheer and they knew how to do little jumps, but I wondered if they were going to be able to do a routine from start to finish to music.” To prepare, the coaches planned a dress rehearsal for the girls to practice in uniform in front of an audience of parents and fellow First Redeemer cheerleading squads.

“When we turned the music on, they did it from start to ﬁnish. It was just a miracle,” Cheryl continued with pride. Choreographed by Kristen with input from Christine and Cheryl, the 2 1/2minute routine combines a cheer, stunt, dance and pyramid and advances as the season continues and the girls become more comfortable. “We tried different things until we could find something that worked for everyone … it started off pretty simple, and as we got further into the season, we added stunts and we let different girls ﬂy,” Kristen said. One team member, Midori, choreographed her own dance to show off her more advanced skills in the routine, while another, Morgan, conquered her fear of stunts by the end of the season. example of the team’s progress was displayed in young Alayna. “[At the first competition] it was very loud. They had smoke blowing and strobe lights, and it was a little overwhelming when we were backstage waiting our turn to go on,” Cheryl explained. “The girls got really nervous, and as we were walking on to the competition floor, it was just too much [for Alayna]. The stimulation was overwhelming, and she stopped. She would not walk, she would not move. So we went on without her.” Luckily, The Flames had the opportunity to compete a second time that day, and this time, Alayna joined her team on the competition floor. “As soon as it was over, she ran off the floor into her mother’s arms shouting ‘I did it, I did it!’” Cheryl continued. “That became our motto — ‘I did it.’ It has sort of become a life motto to all of us now, to know that we can do it.” Cultivating Confidence The girls also had the opportunity to participate in a SFHS VarAFTER-SCHOOL sity girls’ basketball AC T I V ITI E S game. “They loved the pom-poms and they loved meeting the cheerleaders,” Christine said. “During halftime, they got to perform their routine for a gym filled with parents, students and athletes. That was especially exciting and special to us, because we got to go out into the community.” Plans are in the works for a similar experience for this year’s squad, which will welcome all seven original members, plus several new faces, bringing the total to 14. Though some parents have expressed concern that their children won’t be able to participate, the coaches and volunteers are all really good at working with the girls, encouraging them, and walking them through the routine. The squad has proven to be great exercise for the cheerleaders, as well as a confidence builder and an outlet for social interaction. “We make it our goal to show these girls so much love and to make them feel special and extraordinary,” Rueger added. And the team has been rewarding for the coaches, as well. “I want to be a speech therapist. The cheerleading team has definitely helped me figure that out, because I love working with special needs children,” Christine said. For Kristen, the reward comes with watching the smiles on the girls’ faces when they achieve something. “It’s so amazing to hear Alayna say ‘I did it,’” she offered as an example. “She’s so proud of herself, and I got to be a part of helping her feel that way.” PN FO

As high school students,

many of us had a steadfast ritual after Friday night football games. Win or lose, we’d peal out of the stadium parking lot and ﬂock to a local restaurant, something fairly cheap, large enough to accommodate a crowd, and willing to put up with a bunch of boisterous teenagers. As adults, this scenario is less than appealing, so we went in search of more mature options to appease our appetites after the Friday night lights fade.

1.8 miles from Milton High School In all my culinary quests, I’ve discovered that there is a difference between “Italian” food and Italian food. Anyone who has experienced the latter knows the first kind is just an inferior imitation. Luckily, an authentic interpretation of quality Italian cooking is available at Alpine Bakery & Trattoria in Crabapple. At the entrance, two dessert cases filled with fanciful treats in the bakery will tempt you to skip straight to dessert, but your willpower will be rewarded as you explore the restaurant’s savory options. A highlight of my meal came quickly with the robust Italian wedding soup, loaded with tortellini and meatballs made in-house with a trio of veal, pork and beef. Additional must-try menu items include an incredible Caprese salad, made with layers of creamy imported burrata, brightly flavored heirloom tomatoes, aged balsamic vinegar, strips of basil and a strong sprinkling of smoked sea salt, and a deliciously hearty pappardelle Bolognese with thick ribbons of pasta, generous portions of meat and crumbles of goat cheese in a creamy red sauce. Alpine is also famous for phenomenal New York-style pizzas. I recommend topping one with some tasty Italian sausage, which the restaurant procures from Patek Meat Products in Austell, Ga., working closely with the producers to get the best possible product. They also order the highest quality cuts of veal top loin and butcher it in-house, make their sauces inhouse, bring in fresh pasta from locally based Pasta Mami, and work with a variety of vendors to get the freshest produce available. That sentiment carries into the aforementioned bakery. Forget Paris brest the dessert menu, and peruse the cases of cakes, cookies, cannoli and more for yourself. Table & Main 2.8 miles from Roswell High School If you haven’t already been to Table & Main, a Southern Tavern, on Canton Street in Roswell, you’ve been missing out on some of the best food in Atlanta. After years of successful stints in the restaurant business elsewhere, Chef Ted Lahey, an Athens native, and owner Ryan Pernice, a graduate of Roswell High School, crossed paths when Pernice was searching for a chef and Lahey was looking for a kitchen to call his own. It took eight months to renovate the quaint old house into the cozy restaurant it is today and only about six months for

Chef Lahey to be recognized as one of “Atlanta’s Hottest Chefs.” A year later, as Table & Main celebrates its first anniversary this month, the restaurant continues to be one of Atlanta’s best places to pull up a chair for delectable fare. Perhaps patrons are drawn to the patio and the porch, both of which certainly contribute to the warm welcome, but I’ll bet a mason jar full of delicious cheese straws that the real deal isn’t the ambiance. It’s the food, as Lahey’s culinary creativity lies in his stamp of simplicity. Once our complimentary cheese straws disappeared into thin air — at a surprisingly quick clip, I might add — we opted to follow one southern bite with another, starting with the hushpuppies and a plate of Hogs ’n Quilts made with barbecue pork, chive crêpes, vinegar sauce and slaw. For our main entrées, my friend chose the venison with Gouda grits and veggies, while I went for the fresh fish over smoked tomato grits (better known as heaven on a spoon). Of course, we could hardly resist a side of fried okra. Printed above the bourbon menu is a quote by Mark Twain: “Too much of anything is bad, but too much good whiskey is barely enough.” As if to perfectly bookend our memorable meal with another literary tie, we were pleasantly surprised to find our check delivered inside a used book. Ours was “Fried Green Tomatoes at The Whistle Stop Cafe” by Fannie Flagg, while a quick peek at the neighboring table showed others flipping through a Faulkner novel. According to Pernice, many folks have taken it upon themselves to sign their names and compliment the restaurant inside the books. A CHILD’S DENTAL CARE should begin the day the ﬁrst tooth erupts at 6 months. Each tooth should be cleaned on the front and the back. If teeth come in discolored or signiﬁcantly change color, they should be checked out. Milk, formula, breast milk and juice should not touch the teeth at nighttime after the last thorough cleaning to prevent decay. The upper front teeth, which fall out at age 7, serve several functions. DEPENDING ON A CHILD’S AGE, the Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) syndrome may be the most common cause of sleep trouble. The condition is characterized by repetitive obstruction of the upper airway during sleep. It is commonly associated with fluctuating low blood oxygen levels that can affect the brain and, consequently, lead to poor sleep quality. Unlike adult patients who complain of excessive daytime sleepiness as the prime symptom of OSA, manifestations of sleep apnea in children may be subtle. Parents may notice difficulty in breathing during their child’s sleep. Other common signs can include snoring, excessive sweating while asleep, gasping, choking, restless sleep, bedwetting, bad dreams, sleeping with an open mouth, chest retraction during sleep in young children, and sleeping in odd positions, especially with the head tilted up. Hyperactivity, learning problems and poor school grades are other symptoms of OSA that may otherwise be attributed to the attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The most common cause of airway obstruction among children is enlarged tonsils and adenoids, so the mainstay of treatment of OSA in children is removal of the tonsils and/or adenoids. Occasionally, removal of the tonsils and adenoids does not lead to a cure in a child with sleep apnea. In such cases, treatment with a continuous positive airway pressure device (CPAP) may be necessary. This will be prescribed by a sleep doctor after an appropriate test to determine the air pressure that is required to correct the child’s sleep apnea.

elin uniforms, Roald Bradstock sat in a lawn chair holding a paintbrush and his breath. Initially drawn to the tiny air bubbles floating from the paintbrush to the surface, I was ultimately struck by the fact that he, too, would soon need to come up for air. He was at the bottom of a pool, looking calm and completely unflustered as he stared directly into the underwater camera. Few Olympic athletes would dare to do the same — and that’s exactly how he wants it. Pushing boundaries is part passion and part entertainment for 50-year-old Bradstock, who defied his age and countless odds by winning a silver medal in the javelin throw at the Olympic Trials in London last month, earning recognition as the oldest athlete in any event at

the 2012 Trials and the oldest medalist in any event in nearly 76 years. Weeks later, Bradstock packed his bags for another international flight, this time as a professional artist en route to Hong Kong, where his artwork is currently on exhibit. And with his sights now set on introducing the connection between sports and art to kids of all ages and abilities, it seems he is just warming up. Rethinking Impossible as I’m Possible I first met Bradstock at a coffee shop in Sandy Springs, where he flashed a quick and friendly smile before launching into his story. It is a story of, well, launching things — javelins, fish, iPods and almost a cow patty — while never losing sight of his dream to become an Olympic athlete or forgetting just how fortunate he is to

have the ability to walk at all. His expression throughout our long conversation conveyed a comfortable look of determination, one that almost dares you to say he can’t. That look, according to Bradstock, dates back to 1968. “I was 6 years old, parked in front of a little black and white TV in my parents’ kitchen to watch the 1968 Olympic games,” Bradstock recalled. “I said, ‘I want to do that one day.’ Around the same time, I was diagnosed with spina biﬁda. I [had been] getting headaches and my mother, who was a nurse, became concerned.” Bradstock spoke of how he had to go to the hospital every three to six months for quite some time. “One of my earliest memories is at the hospital,” he said. “The doctor asked me to get up and walk to the other side of the room. So I did, and I remember him saying I shouldn’t be able to do that.” He also said Bradstock shouldn’t play sports. Apparently that was exactly what

the youngster needed to hear. Grateful for his health and the realization that sometimes the impossible happens, Bradstock has held on tightly to both, continuously challenging himself to do what no one thinks or expects him to do. Born in the UK, Bradstock came to the United States in 1981 on a full scholarship to Southern Methodist University (SMU) for javelin. After graduating from SMU with an art degree, he moved around the country before becoming a U.S. citizen in 1995. He was an alternate for the U.S. Olympic team in ’96 and shortly thereafter, decided to call Atlanta home. With Atlanta as his new home base, he trained for the ’00, ’04 and ’08 U.S. Olympic Trials, and with each new round came another set of challenges. “At Stanford once, the ﬁeld judge asked me to leave the ﬁeld because no coaches were allowed during the competition,” Bradstock recalled with a smirk. “And during a meet at the University of Georgia, I was denied

access [to the ﬁeld] until they were literally calling my name to throw. That’s happened about three or four times. Now, I’m not only older than the athletes but also their coaches, their parents and I’m getting close to some ofﬁcials,” he laughed. In a sport notorious for injuries and against athletes almost 30 years younger, Bradstock has had to change how he prepares for high levels of competition. “Top javelin athletes can hit 70 mph, throwing a stick that weighs 2 pounds and is almost 9 feet long, and I’m 50. My approach is to rethink the whole approach.” Counting this year, Bradstock has contended in eight Olympic Trials, and has discovered a few secrets along the way. “There’s an art and technique to throwing anything. I throw the javelin, which is basically a stick. [Many] people don’t know what a javelin is, but everyone knows what an iPod is. So [throwing one] gets people engaged,” said Bradstock, whose video of throwing one of his daughter’s old iPods

has become a big hit on YouTube. “It’s amazing. I’ve been challenged around the world to throw things: pebbles in Sicily, sardines in Australia and cow “pats” in the Midwest — I declined that one.” While his fellow competitors attempt to understand how he has outsmarted Father Time to balance his record of four British and four American Olympic Trials, Bradstock has already carved another niche for himself elsewhere. The Art of Connecting Kids to Sports Bradstock’s personal artistic style is the repetition of lines and shapes to create visual energy. From his eye-catching uniforms and matching hand-painted javelins, his talent has garnered national and international attention. In 2000, he won the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) Sport Art Competition; in 2003, he won the prestigious International Sports Artist of the Year award, which earned him the nickname Olympic Picasso; and, this year, he is in the mix again with a painting of a triumphant runner for the Graphic Works category in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Sport and Art Contest. “As far as being an athlete and being an artist ... combining the two is unusual,” Bradstock readily admitted. “Athletes push their bodies to the limit and beyond. Artists push the boundaries of how far a medium can go. My goal as an artist and athlete is to do both and always ask questions.” Much like becoming an Olympian, Bradstock developed a strong interest in art at an early age. Dissatisﬁed with storebought toy soldiers whose arms and legs were static, he made his own army of men — thousands of them — from plasticine, material best described as an oil-based Play-doh that doesn’t dry out or harden.

Call it embracing his sense of humor or forward thinking with the help of technology, but Bradstock, a father himself, has created a fun, competitive-free connection

for kids between two of his favorite pastimes, and launched a personal new passion in the process. “I’ve been teaching and working to create programs for kids, so far by ﬂying back and forth to the UK,” he said. “I always start the Sport Art instruction with a survey. I’ll ask if anyone thinks there is a

connection, and maybe one or two hands will go up. By the end of the class, everyone gets it.” The overall principle behind Sport Art is to promote athletics through imagery, using primarily two different mediums, plasticine and collage. Bradstock explained that a range of sport images are pulled from websites and printed. Those pages are then placed underneath a piece of plexiglass, which serves as a template for children of all ages and abilities to recreate their image using plasticine. Bradstock shared stories about kids in special needs classes who, despite physical restrictions or the inability to steady their hands, were able to create works of art, amazing themselves and instilling a sense of conﬁdence that even their teachers hadn’t previously witnessed. The intrinsic value of these connections is obvious: those who couldn’t now could, and kids who wouldn’t entertain the idea of art if they were sports fanatics, or vice versa, now would. In essence, they are modifying their approach, using creativity to circumvent their limitations and reaching their full potential. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? “I’ve spent all of my life as an athlete and an artist,” Bradstock said. “[Traveling] from the UK to USA, I was lost in the shuffle. The question I had to keep asking myself is ‘What distinguishes you from the pack?’ It eventually becomes about time.” After years of traveling overseas or, in this case, hours of taking photos underwater, the time has ﬁnally come for Bradstock to come up for air in Atlanta. hen Thomas Jefferson first visited Burgundy, he sought a local guide to properly educate him on the region. Jefferson was no fool; he recognized the very complexity that made Burgundian wines so compelling also reﬂected the complexity of the region itself. Burgundy wines are worldrenowned for their structure, balance and essence of place. Every Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Gamay they produce possesses nuances of history; indeed, it is a wine region unlike any other in the world. To that end, Burgundy is not a place where one just shows up expecting tasting rooms with accommodating visitor 58

hours. Winemakers here generally prefer to have tasting appointments and everyone takes lunch, Sundays are off-limits We planned a visit for a mere four days, and careful planning is essential with a short time frame. Strategy begins on the flight over — take the late evening flight, sleep and arrive at noon, refreshed and ready for lunch. Car rentals are directly out of the airport (no shuttles here) and navigating around (not through) Paris is surprisingly easy. You’ll be on the road to Burgundy in less than an hour. The direct drive is about 3.5 hours, but after a long flight, you might consider a layover in one of the charming towns along the way. Knowing our limits, we spent our first

night at Auberge Beursaudiere in the sleepy, wee town of Nitry, just an hour outside of Beaune. Lush and charming, this hotel oozes French countryside charm. Rooms are a steal at 90 euros a night, and each one is rich in unique details with ironwork, textiles and artistic touches. The Auberge restaurant serves a sumptuous lineup of traditional Burgundian cuisine along with an equally impressive wine list representing the area. The serious farm breakfast the next morning is a refreshing kick-off to a day of tastings in Beaune. Plan Ahead Our first scheduled appointment was arranged through Dreyfus Ashby at Joseph

Drouhin. It is vital to make these special arrangements if you wish to sample premier cru and grand cru wines. Drouhin only accepts visitors with appointments, and the extra effort on the front end is absolutely worth it. Tours usually involve a tasting of six wines (some as many as 12) and are customized to your preferences. The Drouhin cellars, located in the very heart of Beaune, read like a history book, with many architectural elements dating back to the 10th century. You’ll get a peek at a wine press from 1570 (still used to press grapes on occasion); and the Liberty Door is where Maurice Drouhin hid from the Gestapo during WWII. Even the tasting room is walled in history — partially composed of an ancient Roman wall — an impressive backdrop with which to savor your glass of Clos de Mouche 2009 or Chablis Grand Cru Vaudesir 2009. The Drouhins bio-dynamically farm all of their estate fruit and Véronique Drouhin is currently winemaker at Domain Drouhin in Oregon. Our next tasting was with LabouréRoi and négociant Armand Cottin in Nuits St. Georges, (approximately 15 minutes north of Beaune). Tours here are also only arranged by appointment. Labouré-Roi is considered to have one of the most state-ofthe-art winemaking facilities in Burgundy, but the 12th-century cellars below, coated in a respectable layer of “cellar candy” (a black mold that indicates ideal storage conditions) are where the aging magic happens. You’ll be squired through the cellars to a special tasting room lit only by candlelight, making it feel very Old World and authentic. Our tasting included 12 wines, including grand cru and premier cru wines.

In Between Tastings In Burgundy, lunch is king. No one will grant appointments during the hours of noon and 2 p.m. If only Americans were this savvy. When in Rome, do as they do and spend your two hours dining or touring. There is more to Beaune than just

wine. Consider The Hospices de Beaune, originally a hospital for the indigent class in Beaune, and now a museum. With its glazed tile roof, lovely courtyard and mural paintings, it merits a special visit. We began our third day with an eye-popping stroll through the Saturday Market in Beaune’s center. Almost baroque in its lavishness, vast spreads of charcuterie, cheese, fruit, honey and pastry, (even a vendor with freshly foraged truffles) are intermingled with artwork and antiques. This is a fine opportunity to stock up on baguettes and cheese, rent some bikes for the lunch hour and enjoy a jaunt. We had enough time to get back for our scheduled tasting with Domaine A.F. Gros and Francois Parent. Gros and Parent are married and have united their winemaking into one facility in Beaune. These were certainly some of the most gorgeous Pinot Noirs we tasted on our visit. You will likely be hosted by their lovely daughter Caroline Parent, who is currently bottling her own wine as well. We enjoyed several premier cru within a broad selection of appellations including Vosne Romanée, Pommard and Savigny les Beaune. Sunday is really a long lunch hour in Beaune; stores are closed, wineries are closed, and everyone rests and enjoys family. This is the day to drive back to Paris and soak up a museum or two before heading home Monday morning. After being saturated in tradition, a sleek, cityof-lights layover in Paris is a nice change. This is also the evening to splurge on a Michelin-rated restaurant experience. The Park Hyatt Place Vendome suited us perfectly. Just a few clicks from the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay, it was ideally located along Place Vendome. The opulent five-star digs were outshined only by our exquisite meal at their restaurant, Pur’, which currently has one Michelin star (and is well on its way to getting two). Ask for the chef’s table, abutting the kitchen itself,
