As garden program grows, students may have “farm to table” food in lunchroom BY KATIE METZGER kmetzger@mi-reporter.com

When Lakeridge Elementary students return to school this week, those in one after school club will be able to see the fruits — and vegetables — of their labor this past spring. About 35 kids are part of Lakeridge’s garden club, meeting every Friday after school to learn about gardening, cooking, sustainable farming and local food. Island resident and mother of five Nancy Weil started the program to teach kids about where their food

comes from and how much time and effort it takes to grow it, in a very hands-on way. “I’m amazed at how much kids will eat if they were involved in making it,” Weil said. “It really opens your eyes to what it takes to grow your own food … And it tastes better than [produce] from the grocery store.” Weil started the garden six years ago with the help of Anthony Warner, a garden coordinator for schools in Seattle. She said that the PTA, principal and superintendent were very supportive of the idea. Weil also runs the King County Green Schools program for the Mercer Island School District, and helped start the “zero waste” campaign at the Mercer Island Farmers Market and at school parties. She previously served on the

Mayor’s Sustainability Task Force, in the subdivision of waste reduction. Leftover food is a huge issue in schools, she said. Educating children about saving their snacks for later instead of throwing them away, and about the importance of composting and recycling versus tossing things in the trash can (which schools now label as “landfill”), is a small thing that makes a big difference. Weil listed several examples of little changes that can be made in daily life to save resources: replacing light bulbs with LEDs, buying recycled paper towels and wrapping presents with newspaper instead of gift wrap and ribbons. Equally important to the lessons that are learned is the fun that is had. Weil said that she wanted the kids “to love it, and to get their hands dirty.” The Lakeridge garden has 17 beds and many varieties of plants: 15 types of tomatoes, six types of

The 2016-17 school year starts today, and the Mercer Island School Board has hit the ground running, holding two meetings in the past two weeks to discuss the operating budget, teacher contract negotiations and policy changes for field trips and discipline. The board also discussed closeout of the 2014 bond projects, including the newly-opened Northwood Elementary, and the renovations at the high school and at Islander Middle School, which will have a dedication ceremony on Oct. 1. The first reading for the district operating budget was held on Aug. 22, with a second reading and public hearing on Aug. 29, after Reporter deadline. The biggest challenge facing the district comes from the state level, with the looming levy lid cliff. The district is setting aside reserves so that if the McCleary decision and

education funding situation are not resolved by April, Mercer Island will not have to terminate any teacher contracts. CFO Dean Mack said that the district is “running up the fund balance a little” to grant a one-year reprieve. School Board members Dave Myerson, David D’Souza and Tracy Drinkwater asked about other revenue sources, including transportation efficiencies, impact fees and fines for drivers illegally passing school buses, respectively. Mack said that the district brought in $85,000 in three months from impact fees, but that they depend on new home construction, and that the fines for passing school buses are not a long-term source of revenue. The board also discussed the decisions to split the field trip policy into two categories: day trips and extended/ international trips. Students will be required to sign a trip behavior agreement and sign in and out from

trip locations. Changes will be communicated to parents and staff. Another policy change comes in student conduct expectations and reasonable sanctions, to align with House Bill 1541, which was adopted by the state Legislature in its last session. It requires suspended or expelled students to receive educational services, prohibits students from being suspended or expelled for discretionary offenses and sets the maximum suspension length as one academic term, instead of one year. Jennifer Wright, the district’s director of learning and technology services, said that “exceptional misconduct” is rare in the district, and that she can recall three incidents in the past 10 years where a student was suspended for more than 10 days. Superintendent Dr. Gary Plano discussed the results of the bargain with the Mercer Island Education Association (MIEA) during his report. He said that as a tradeoff for introducing the Spanish world language program in elementary schools, teachers will be given more planning time — about 210

minutes per week instead of 150 minutes. Teachers at the four elementary schools were split about what that would look like. Two settled on a rotating schedule with 40 minute instruction time, while the other two liked the idea of a half hour. MIEA President Mike Radow addressed the board during its public input period, and said that though he was concerned about the idea of different schedules, it was a “successful” bargain. The board also discussed a complaint by a family with three kids in three different elementary schools who had missed the appeal window due to a miscommunication, and granted the family the opportunity to appeal to the superintendent. The district had 98 to 100 requests for transfers, and was able to accommodate about 50, Plano said. The appeal “doesn’t necessarily guarantee a positive outcome,” Drinkwater said, and if the district’s answer is not satisfactory, the family still had the opportunity to appeal to the board on Monday. This is the second year students took the Smarter Balanced tests in English Language Arts (ELA) and math. The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) recently released the scores. “We are pleased with our high school ELA results and particularly impressed with the gains at almost all levels for both ELA and math at the middle school,” said Superintendent Dr. Gary Plano. get to school safely, the Mercer Island School Board was informed on Aug. 22 that Brandy Fox, construction manager, was working with the city on a cheaper solution than the one originally proposed. The project will add an asphalt pathway along the south side of the street from 88th Avenue Southeast to 90th Avenue Southeast along with two raised crosswalks, which will act as designated crossing points and speed bumps. School zone signage will also be added. School Board President Ralph Jorgensen said the sidewalk would help Northwood Elementary establish a tradition of students walking and biking to school. The district will divert capital project dollars to the safe route, while the city will help out by raising fire hydrants in the area and removing some trees and hedges.

Mercer Island celebrates Women’s Equality Day Go downtown for ‘First Thursday Art and Wine’ BY KATIE METZGER

kmetzger@mi-reporter.com

An intimate crowd of Islanders gathered at Mercerdale Park on Thursday to celebrate Mercer Island Women’s Equality Day, continuing a tradition established last year. Speakers included Deputy Mayor Debbie Bertlin, Councilmember Wendy Weiker and Amanda Clark from the League of Women Voters. Exapsos, a band comprised of Mercer Island High School senior Leah Raissis and her brother Zane, a fifth grader at Lakeridge Elementary, played an eclectic mix of rock songs as spectators enjoyed sandwiches from Gourmini’s food truck and almost 90 degree weather after the speeches. National Women’s Equality Day on Aug. 26 commemorates the signing of the 19th amendment, which granted women the right to vote in 1920. Bertlin said the city’s event was a chance to recognize the opportunities women enjoy, and the shortcomings they still face today. She referenced recent accomplishments of American women, who brought home 27 of the 46 gold medals from the 2016 Olympic games. She also mentioned that black women are now America’s most educated group, but that professional and social

Bertlin said it’s a huge step, “whether you agree with [Democrat Hillary Clinton’s] politics or not.” Clark said that the League of Women Voters was established six months before the 19th amendment was ratified in 1920, anticipating that 70 years of women’s suffrage activism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries would come to fruition. most important things citizens can do,” Clark said, noting that Americans can celebrate Clinton’s nomination, but should remember that the battle for equality is ongoing. Women are still underrepresented in elected offices across the country, she said. Bertlin also talked about the accomplishments of Katharine Graham, the first woman CEO of a Fortune 500 company in 1972, Carol Moseley Braun, the first African-American woman elected to the U.S. Senate in 1993 and Malala Yousafzai, the youngest-ever Nobel Prize laureate, who was awarded for her advocacy for female education and human rights in 2014.

Bertlin noted the opportunities for young women on Mercer Island, including the Stanley Ann Dunham scholarship. The scholarship, awarded to graduating senior women, is named for President Barack Obama’s mother, who went to Mercer Island High School. The event is a chance to “celebrate the progress that has been made toward securing women’s full participation in our democracy and renew our commitment to securing equal rights, freedoms and opportunities for all women,” according to the Mercer Island Women’s Equality Day proclamation made Aug. 1. Art galleries in Mercer Island continue to host show openings and wine tastings on the first Thursday of every month, and invite the public to kick off Labor Day weekend with art, music and seasonal bites. This month’s event will be held from 4:30-7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 1. Suzanne Zahr’s SZ Gallery on 76th Avenue Southeast is partnering with The Islander again for wine and food, and will feature local artist Victoria Johnson, European artist Gitte Peters, ASH + AMES jewelry by Jennie King and harp music from 12-yearold Carla Mory. Five percent of all art sales and 10 percent of all jewelry sales go to Art with Heart. Clarke and Clarke Art and Artifacts is continuing last month’s popular theme of “Northwest to Southwest,” featuring the works of 20th century Native American artists. “As always, an eclectic collection within a backdrop of artifacts and treasures from around the globe” can be found at the gallery on Southeast 27th Street, according to a press release. The focal point is the textile work of Bernice Williams, one of the few female totem carvers from the Haida community. Her totems stand in numerous locations in British Columbia and the Northwest. Also included in the show is a collection of pottery, work of Bess Bruce Cleaveland, Ganado rugs from the early 1900s and “Wolf Robe,” an “exquisitely

potatoes and four types of cucumbers, along with cauliflower, radishes, squash, bell peppers, carrots, onions, lettuce, cabbage, kale, strawberries and even an herb garden. Weil said she tried to fill the garden with some unusual types of produce, like lemon cucumbers, which are yellow and round, and different colored carrots. The garden also had also broccoli, which was lost to aphids, and pumpkins, which were stolen. Weil said that there have been problems with people outside of the Lakeridge community coming in to the garden and taking food, many times before it is even ripe, but “we can’t control things like that,” she said. The district’s food service director, Carol Bus, and a Chartwell’s regional manager met Weil in the garden last week to talk about bringing the food into the lunchroom to make it “garden to table” for students. The USDA has a school garden pro-

At the end of the last school year, Weil helped the kids in the garden club make salads from their vegetables, and said she hopes to teach them how to make tomato sauce, salsa, mint tea and other treats when they return. Weil, who didn’t have a background in gardening or environmental science, said that she became interested in sustainability after seeing the film, “An Inconvenient Truth.” When she decided to start the garden at Lakeridge, she said she got an “overwhelming response.” Parents signed up to water the garden every few days over the summer to keep it going. “The kids learn that it takes months to grow, and that if you leave it alone for a few days, it dries out,” Weil said. At the end of the day, Weil said that she wants to help the kids “out into the world with this knowledge and make the world a better place.”

Mercer Island ranked among state’s safest, most successful cities BY REPORTER STAFF news@mi-reporter.com

Zippia ranked the city of Mercer Island as No. 3 out of the 10 most successful cities in Washington. The career expert website analyzed every city in Washington in terms of poverty level, median household income and unemployment rate to rank the most successful cities. Zippia determined Mercer Island’s population is 23,636, it’s median income is $125,651, poverty level 3.5 percent and unemployment rate 4.5 percent. Mercer Island is also the second-safest mid-sized city in Washington, according to a study ValuePenguin recently published. The city’s ranking is based on a variety of crime metrics the website sourced from the FBI across 117 Washington cities. Each city’s score takes into account violent and property crime and adjusts it for population size.

Ogata called Mark, who took on a lion’s share of duty amidst the rash of injuries last season, “a solid rock” for his offensive unit. “He’s the known commodity on the team that other teams know about,” Ogata said. “He’s a guy that we can get the ball to and he’s gonna make plays for us.” Mercer Island is starting the year with 65 players turning out, the lowest turnout Ogata has seen in ISS–EdP#8878 his eightRep: years at the helm.

The Islanders also had to cancel the JV season in 2015 due to injury callups. “It is what it is,” Ogata said of the low turnout. “I’ve talked to a lot of other coaches and that’s kind of the trend this year from a lot of youth programs and high school programs. “In terms of our kids, I’m not gonna make that an excuse for not being successful. We’re gonna go at it and [play] hard, and the kids know that. They’re up for the challenge.” The senior players echoed their coach’s sentiment. And as they

approach their final prep campaign on the gridiron, the senior Islanders hope they’re able to accomplish more than staying on the football field. “I’d definitely say a goal for us is to make the playoffs,” Swanson said. “The varsity team did when we were freshmen … and I feel like that group of seniors is really similar to us. [They were] sort of light on guys, but really worked hard in the offseason and really came together as a unit and were able to make the playoffs. For me, that’s inspiring and it shows us that it can be done and is very doable.” Mercer Island opens its season against Yakima’s West Valley High at 7 p.m. Friday at Islander Stadium.

MIHS boys water polo car wash is next weekend The annual Mercer Island High School boys water polo car wash will be held from noon to 3 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 11 at the south end Storage Court located at 8501 SE 68th St. Tickets are $10, and are considered a tax-deductible donation. Though the Mercer Island School District treats boys water polo as a “varsity sport,” water polo is considered a “club sport,” according to WIAA rules. Being a WIAA club sport means the team is not eligible for monetary support, and the team must raise money to fund their water polo season. The MIHS boys water polo team car wash is a longrunning Islander tradition and the primary team fundraiser for the season. Money raised benefits the entire team by offsetting pool rental fees, supplementing tournament travel costs, buying team equipment and providing scholarship support, which reduces team fees for all athletes’ families.

This year’s race is organized by Kevin Collins, who has served as the local volunteer race director since its inception. A portion of the proceeds from the 9/11 Heroes Run will benefit the Travis Manion Foundation, which empowers veterans and families of fallen heroes to develop character in future generations. The other portion of the proceeds will remain in the local community to support the Team Jesse Foundation and its work to support the families of fallen heroes through scholarships and grants. The 9/11 Heroes Run series was inspired by Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion, who was killed by a sniper in Iraq in April 2007

as he selflessly protected his battalion. Before his final deployment, Manion visited Rescue One in New York City — famous for losing almost all of their men on 9/11 — and returned home with deeper passion about why he was fighting in Iraq. At its heart, the 9/11 Heroes Run is a tribute to a personal commitment to never forget the heroes of that day. In its eighth year, the 9/11 Heroes Run national race series will be held in more than 50 locations around the U.S. and the world. “Knowing that so many people gave their lives during the 9/11 attacks touched my brother Travis in a way that would forever change him,” said Ryan Manion Borek, president of Travis Manion Foundation, in a media release. “Six years

after 9/11, my brother also gave his life for his country, so every year we gather communities together to run a 5K, not just to honor the fallen, but to continue the legacies of character, leadership, and service that they left behind. We are looking forward to this exciting race season and uniting people around the world to continue those legacies and redefine America’s national character.” Last year, more than 30,000 people participated in races around the world. The Travis Manion Foundation invested over $151,000 back into the local race communities to support military, veterans, first responders and their families.
