Question of the week

This week’s question: Do you shop locally for holiday presents? Vote and see results online at www.centralkitsapreporter.com

Page A3

Shopping locally makes a difference locally

B

y the time you read this, you’ll have awakened from that postmeal drowsiness and be making holiday shopping and event plans for the weekend. Allow us to make a recommendation: Shop locally. If there’s one enduring lesson of the Great Recession of the last decade, it is how important we are to each other. A community is like a ship at sea; in the stormiest economic times, we can count only on each other to get through it. We sail or sink together. That’s why “shop local” is more than a mere seasonal-shopping slogan. It’s a fact that each dollar we spend helps pay local wages, put food on local tables and pay local rents and mortgages. It funnels through to the many nonprofits by the generous donations of local businesses. It generates sales tax revenue, which supports public services that benefit you. Money we spend here stays here. Do your holiday shopping elsewhere, and your money stays elsewhere. Shopping local makes sense in other ways. First, you know who you’re buying from — someone you may have known for years — and often you’ll purchase an item that is made locally. Second, local items are unique. Locally produced art, books and clothing reflect the wealth of creativity in our community and enrich our lives. You’ll find local food products, as well as award-winning local brews and vintages, which help nourish and sustain us. If you’re looking for eco-friendly items, our community offers more than its share. This area is a world-class destination, known for its natural beauty. Consider a donation in a family member’s name to a local landmark, museum or cause. Consider a gift certificate for an outdoor activity. Consider a gift certificate for dinner at a local restaurant or a night on the town. And, of course, shopping locally includes all the cheer and lights and fun of the holiday events that accompany the season. Skip the ferries, freeways and fill-ups. There is a lot to enjoy and share in shopping close to home. We wish you all the best this holiday season.

Lots to be thankful for “Do you realize we’ve been giving thanks for almost 400 years?” “Ah, yes, you refer our country’s Thanksgiving tradition, which originated with the very first Thanksgiving in November 1621. But did you know that much of our Thanksgiving tradition is based on a myth?” “What do you mean myth?” “According to The Christian Science Monitor, everything historians know about the first Thanksgiving is based on the accounts of two colonists: Gov. William Bradford and a fellow named Edward Winslow.” “Go on.” “In 1621, in a letter to a friend, Winslow said that after a plentiful harvest, the 53 remaining colonists decided to feast. The governor sent out four men to hunt for fowl. Ninety Native Americans, the Wampanoags, also joined in; they contributed five deer. The colonists and Wampanoags feasted for three days.” “They ate venison on Thanksgiving?” “Yep. There were no mashed potatoes. The colonists didn’t have those yet. They had no butter, bread or sugar, either. There were no sweet cranberries or pies. They had no ovens. Their feast probably included foods that were accessible to them, including grapes, plums, flint corn and seafood. As for the fowl, there were wild turkeys, but also geese and duck.”

My Turn Tom Purcell “Thanksgiving duck?” “Gov. Bradford wrote about the first Thanksgiving in a book that details the history of the Plymouth settlement. Here’s how he described the pilgrim’s good fortune that year: ‘All the summer there was no want ... And besides waterfowl, there was a great store of wild turkeys, of which they took many, besides venison, etc. Besides, they had about a peck of meal a week to a person, or now since harvest, Indian corn to that proportion. Which made many afterwards write so largely of their plenty here to their friends in England, which were not feigned but true reports.’ ” “If Gov. Bradford wrote a book with detailed descriptions of the first Thanksgiving, why are our Thanksgiving traditions so different than the first?” “Because the British stole his book during the Revolutionary War. It didn’t turn up until the late 1800s — well after America’s Thanksgiving traditions were in place.” “Then where in the heck did our Thanksgiving traditions come from?” “A woman named Sarah Josepha Hale created them. She was the edi-

tor of a popular lady’s magazine. In 1858, she petitioned the president to declare it a national holiday and, in 1863, Abraham Lincoln did just that. Hale published lots of recipes for turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, etc. — the same grub we still eat today!” “I suppose it doesn’t matter where our Thanksgiving traditions originated. What does matter is that our country still has so much to be thankful for!” “You have to admit we’ve had one heck of a run since our Founders declared independence from King George on July 4, 1776 — 239 years ago! Because we still hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.” “I never tire of that line! We’ve had a share of bumps in the road, and there are a lot of things we need to address if we intend to keep chugging along. Still, this time every year it is good to do what the pilgrims did during the very first Thanksgiving: take stock of our plentiful harvest and be thankful to God.” “That’s the spirit. Maybe you might try some geese, duck, flint corn or seafood with your turkey dinner?” “Maybe next year.”

with modernized facilities for both the hospital and for ambulatory care. The expanded hospital will also feature a medical office building on-site to house specialists. The campus will also have a cancer center. In Bremerton, there will be an ambulatory center that will provide primary care, a diagnostic lab and a primary-care residency program. “Part of this is how do we help control those costs by providing the right care in the right setting from primary care to walk-in clinics to urgent care to even the virtual urgent care that you saw the system roll out over the summer,” Alvarez said. The Silverdale campus will be built to provide great views of trails, trees, the mountains and Dyes Inlet. A tall skyscraper-like tower will house inpatient beds and features lots of windows. Below the tower are three floors for labs, surgery, din-

Sid Uhnick Drive will be re-routed several hundred feet to the southwest so that it connects with the Silverdale campus’ entrance road. A traffic light will be installed at the intersection. A rear road will provide access for emergency vehicles. The plans include options that would allow Harrison to expand to a larger campus in the future.

“We’ll probably start moving dirt for the parking garage late spring/early summer. And we hope to be fully engaged in building the tower by fall. The goal was to have some services open by October of 2018, which is the 100th anniversary of the first patient at Harrison Medical Center. We’re really pushing to that goal. The full facility probably won’t be open until early 2019.” Alvarez said Harrison has worked with the Department

it a lot for future development. What we will not do is leave urban blight in our wake, so we’re carrying money to demolish the building if we have to.” But Alvarez said Harrison was looking to see if there was another group who could make use of the building instead of having the building demolished. “The trouble is it needs about $150 million worth of renovations if someone’s going to use it in the future,” Alvarez said. “And so you can tear it down for $4 million, build a nice $50 million building and be money ahead. The math always gets us. You see that huge building and think there’s an opportunity to reuse it, but when you start running the numbers … it’s seen its useful life. It’s time for something else. The crash caused traffic to be severely backed-up in the area and WSP advised drivers to avoid the area until the scene was processed and cleared. The road was fully re-opened around 10 a.m. Enright stated in an email that WSP estimates it may take up to 60 days to complete their

We need a new piece on the other side towards downtown.” Alvarez said a new or remodeled Bremerton hospital campus would likely be located closer to downtown Bremerton, as Harrison determined through a study that would be a location that would best serve its customers. Alvarez said Harrison’s other locations in Port Orchard, Belfair and Silverdale were a factor in deciding to locate a campus near downtown Bremerton. “If we (built) along Wheaton Way or somewhere in east Bremerton ... it’s almost as fast to go to Silverdale,” he said of the decision to focus on the downtown Bremerton core. Alvarez said a downtown Bremerton site has not yet been selected, but that it would likely be past Olympic College.

A warrant was signed to collect samples of Tobler’s blood for testing. “The preliminary investigation suggests that alcohol and prescription medication may have been a factor,” Enright wrote. Blood tests will confirm if those substances were a factor in the crash. “Public safety is always our primary concern. However, we need to have a full investigation in order to make a charging decision and secure a conviction. here’s plenty of holiday happenings in Central Kitsap and Bremerton this year.

THEATER PRODUCTIONS: “THE NUTCRACKER”

SILVERDALE

Once you’ve put away that turkey and wrapped up the leftovers, head to Silverdale’s 61st annual Christmas TreeLighting on the day after Thanksgiving. From 1-4 p.m. Nov. 28, the Silverdale Library will host stories, including “Elf on a Shelf,” at the library, 3450 NW Carlton St., in Old Town Silverdale. There will be tractor hayrides through Old Town from 2-4 p.m., starting from the Oxford Suites, 9550 Silverdale Way NW. Stop by Lisa Stirrett’s House of Glass, 9536 Silverdale Way NW, and decorate some cookies. And don’t forget to take some selfies with area mascots who will be in Old Town. From 4-6 p.m. in the parking lot outside Silverdale Antiques, there’ll be free cookies, hot cider and hot chocolate, facepainting, clowns with balloons, and toys for kids to build at a booth sponsored by Lowe’s. Carolers will sing from 4-5 p.m. Grab a piece of pizza at Monica’s Bakery, which will become a pizzeria. At 5 p.m., the tree-lighting ceremony will begin with a welcome from the Silverdale Chamber of Commerce. Students from area schools will perform holiday tunes. Santa will arrive on a Central Kitsap Fire & Rescue fire engine at 5:50 p.m. and help light the tree at 6 p.m. Santa will be around to talk with the kids and for photographs following that. Those who come out are asked to bring food items for the Central Kitsap Food Bank and toys for the Toys For Tots campaign. Items will be collected at the John L. Scott Silverdale office, 8382 Silverdale Way N.W. Since 1954, a very tall Christmas tree has lit up the sky for the holidays in Silverdale thanks to a coordinated effort of dedicated community volunteers, Silverdale Rotary, Silverdale Dandy Lions, and Kiwanis. Brothers Rich and Roland Arper have continued the tradition of their father, legendary Silverdale Rotarian Bob Arper, and are the major force behind the project. The tree is now 128 feet tall.

KITSAP MALL

Kitsap Mall has many events planned for the holiday season. There are Giving Trees by the JC

The Bremerton High School marching band will be a part of downtown Bremerton’s annual Winterfest, which is set for Dec. 4. Leslie Kelly photo Penney Court through Dec. 20. Grab a tag, purchase that item and then bring it back and put it under the tree with the tag. Donations benefit the Salvation Army, Toys For Tots and Bay Vista Commons Senior Center. Santa will be at the mall through Dec. 24. Give your list to Santa or get your photo taken with him in Center Court. Here’s the schedule. n Until Dec. 11: noon to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday; noon to 6 p.m. Sunday. n Dec. 11-23: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday. n Dec. 24: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m, before he takes off to deliver toys. To make reservations online to minimize the wait, go to www.mysanta experience.com. The mall will open at 6-10 p.m. Thanksgiving. Black Friday hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Additionally, area school children will be at the mall singing holiday carols in the North Court. Go to www.shopkitsap mall.com for more.

BREMERTON

The Downtown Bremerton Association’s Winterfest is 5-8 p.m. for Dec. 4, during the First Friday Art Walk. Shops in downtown will be open for business and there’ll be festive displays in all windows. Bremerton Mayor Patty Lent will be on hand as the holiday tree is lit and Santa

arrives, about 5:30 p.m. The tree is located by the Navy Museum at Harborside. At the marina, many boats will also be lit for the holidays. From 6-7 p.m., get your picture taken with Santa at the Kitsap Historical Museum; photos by Hudson Photography. Stop by the Evergreen Children’s Theatre and Aurora Valentinetti Puppet Museum at 257 Fourth St. to see exhibits and enjoy refreshments. The Bremerton High School marching band will perform. The Sweet Adelines will sing holiday tunes. Other choirs will perform too. Don’t be surprised to see a horse-drawn carriage happen by on Pacific Avenue, offering rides for the young and the young-at-heart.

MANETTE

Winterfest’s “Magic in Manette” will take place from 5-8 p.m. Dec. 4. Santa will arrive at 5:15 p.m. with the Ice Princesses via a Bremerton fire truck and kids can have their photos taken with Santa at Aubin Ahrens Photography studio. Photos with Santa are scheduled from 5-7 p.m. for cash donations and/or a bag of groceries to be donated to the Kitsap Rescue Mission.

There will be music and carolers walking about Manette. The streets in the business district will be closed to vehicle traffic. At 7 p.m., the holiday tree at 11th Street and Scott Avenue will be lit. A

Take some time to enjoy “The Nutcracker,” a holiday tradition by Peninsula Dance Theatre. Peninsula Dance Theatre’s “Nutcracker” is the longest-running “Nutcracker” in Kitsap County and the only “Nutcracker” in the county that can be seen with live orchestra. This is its 42nd season. The Peninsula Ballet Orchestra, conducted by Alan Futterman, will accompany the production at the Bremerton High School Performing Arts Center. New choreography will be presented for the Snow Kingdom. Choreographer Nicole Cisler and assistant director Mallory Morrison created a scene to highlight the dance theatre’s dancers abilities and artistry, while embracing and displaying the dynamics that Tchaikovsky’s music score holds. Performances: 7:30 p.m. Dec. 4 and 5; and 3 p.m. Dec. 6. A special Nutcracker Tea is scheduled at 1 p.m. Dec. 6. Clara and her friends will be there too. Tickets can be purchased online at www.peninsuladancetheatre.org, or in person at Bremerton Dance Center, 515 Chester Avenue, Bremerton. Call 360377-6214.

“SHREK THE MUSICAL”

“Shrek The Musical” will be presented this holiday season by the Central Stage Theatre of County Kitsap (CSTOCK). “Shrek The Musical,” based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks film that started it all, brings the hilarious story of everyone’s favorite ogre to life on stage. In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre — not a handsome prince — shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won’t shut up, a villain with a short temper, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you’ve got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there’s one on hand … and his name is Shrek. Opening night is Nov. 27 with additional performances through Dec. 20. Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m. Sunday performances are at 3 p.m. Performances are at Central Kitsap Middle School at 10130 Frontier Place NW, Silverdale. Ticket range from $8 to $15. Family passes can be purchased at the door. Online: www.cstock.org/shows.

TIS THE SEASON CENTRAL KITSAP & BREMERTON

NOVEMBER 27, 2015

Shopping locally is the way to fulfill every wish There’s a great selection of cowboy boots to choose from at Charly Boots in Silverdale.

By LESLIE KELLY

lkelly@soundpublishing.com

T

his is it. My one day to shop and take care of everyone and everything that’s on my Christmas list. I’ve preplanned a few items by looking at local retailers’ websites. For other gifts, I’m just heading to some of the stores around Central Kitsap and Bremerton that I know will have great gifts and great selections. It’s just after 9 a.m., and because most stores don’t open until 10 a.m., I’m going to stop off at the Oak Table in Silverdale and have a good hearty breakfast at the place voted “Best Breakfast Restaurant” in Central Kitsap. I’m going to have the Gourmet Swiss Scramble, with Swiss cheese and bacon, served with three pancakes for only $13.25. Add in lots of coffee to keep me going and I’ll be set. The restaurant, at 3290 NW Mount Vintage Way, also serves lunch. And in fact, while I’m here, I’ll get two gift certificates to give to my friends Jane and Mary. Just a little something between friends. Now I’m off to “shop until I drop.” First

Colorful tree ornaments make nice gifts for friends and neighbors. Leslie Kelly photo comes getting something for my niece, Annie, who is 16. At Lisa Stirrett Glass, there’s a section of Fair Trade jewelry made by women in Africa. Bracelets begin at $15. I’m going to pair up a few for her. Also while I’m here, I’m going to buy a trio of glass tea light candles to wrap up as a set for my boss. I know she likes candles and these are so bright and will look great on a coffee table. They are $32 each. Lisa also has quite a selection of handmade glass ornaments that would look perfect on our tree at home. How about a red crab and a green star? The glass ornaments start at $15 each. (Lisa Stirrett Glass is at 9536 NW Silverdale Way, Silverdale. 360-613-5472 or 360-5362772, www.lisastirrett.com.) Next, I’m stopping by Charly Boots to buy my husband a pair of new cowboy boots. Yes — there they are, the pair he asked for: Tony Lama Men’s Americana H Toe Western Boot. They’re $199. But I know he’ll spend that much on me, so why not? The store also has a great selection of Montana Silver jewelry. Maybe I’ll take a look at the rings and add something to my Christmas list. I think I like that silver heart. It’s $37.90. Or the silver and

turquoise bracelet at $68. (Charly Boots, 10516 Silverdale Way, Silverdale. 360692-0589.) While I’m in Silverdale, I’ll stop by the Regal Kitsap 8 movie theater and get some movie passes that will fit just right in a couple of stockings. Adult ticket prices are $12. So, how about a couple $25 gift certificates? That way, my family members can see a show and get some popcorn and other treats, too. (Kitsap 8 is at 10055 Kitsap Mall Blvd. NW, Silverdale.) I’m moving on now to the World Market Imports store, near Kitsap Mall. I see a great gift for my co-worker, Jill. It’s a “My Bucket List Journal,” an easy way to document life experiences, that has pages that encourage exploring life and includes inspirational notes that will motivate anyone to keep a life plan. It sells for $19.99. Another gift to get: a Sharkbite Hot Sauce six pack. Flavors include cayenne pepper, habanero pepper, jaws of fire, garlic pepper and Hammerhead Tabasco/Habanero peppers. These bottles are each five ounces and together the set is $9.99. And who can pass by the colorful display of holiday ornaments without picking up a few? There’s tiny wooden sleds, burlap snowmen, a red car carrying a tree on its roof, and even a mini knitted sweater and hat set. They range in price from $5.99 for each ornament, or $20 for a set of three. (World Market, 10315 Silverdale Way, Silverdale. 360-692-0589.) It’s almost noon and I’m ready for lunch. But I think I’ll head to Bremerton first. There, I can grab a burger at the Horse & Cow (536 Fourth St., Bremerton. 360-627-9843). I’m getting

The perfect gift: a box of Amy’s Decadent Chocolates. Leslie Kelly photo

the beef burger topped with onions, lettuce, tomato, pickles, mayo, mustard and ketchup for $10.79, served with fries or a salad. This is quite the place with lots of Navy submariners’ memorabilia. I think I’ll pick up a T-shirt for my hubby. He’d like that. Looking at my list, there are several places downtown that I need to stop by. Down the block is the Valentinetti Puppet Museum. This place is filled with imagination-inviting things for kids to do. I know my 10-year-old nephew, Billy, would love a trip to see this museum. I think I’ll buy him that experience and couple it with a class on how to make puppets — and a wonderful hand puppet of pirate at $28. Guided tours are $4 per person, and there’s a monthly “make & take it” puppet class where children create a puppet to take home. Next, I’m going to stop by the Kitsap Historical Museum and buy my parents that local history book they’ve been talking about. The book, “Kitsap County: A History” is on sale for $60. Based on oral histories, personal accounts, archival records, photographic collections, official documents, newspaper and journal articles, this book is a wealth of information about this county we live in. The gift shop at this museum is something else. There’s lots of other books to choose from, and even posters. (The museum is at 280 Fourth St., Bremerton. 360-4796226.) I hope to find a great original piece of artwork for my parents, too. I’ll stop by Collective Visions (331 Pacific Ave., Bremerton. 360-377-8327.) Collective Visions is an artist-owned and operated gallery and shows works by about 20 Puget Sound artists. The artists work in many media, including oil, acrylic, and watercolor paintings; drawings in pastel, pencil, and charcoal; etchings, monoprints, and collographs; wood carvings; sculpture in stone, wood, and metal; a variety of functional and artistic ceramics; color and black and white photography and digital mediums as well. My parents really like paintings so I’m going in that direction. I see an acrylic painting of a large sunflower by Bill Walcott, titled “The Sun is in my Eyes.” It’s $350. The gallery is a great place to find unique art gifts. The’ve got everything from photography, paintings, sculpture and even greeting cards and jewelry, including colorful flower pins at $22 each. My next stop is nearby, at F.R.O.G.

Soap, where I can get a selection of homemade all natural bars of soap, each at $6.95. The store has soap bars for the holidays in peppermint scent that are red, green and white. I’m going to pick up a half a dozen bars in a gift box for my sister. At the store, I also can pick up a couple of soaps shaped like cupcakes that retail at $5.95. I think I’ll give these to the neighbor girls. The store also carries handmade jewelry made of sea glass, and they have balloon bouquets that can be personally designed. (F.R.O.G. Soap, 530 Fifth St., Bremerton. 360-627-7431, or www.frogsoap.com) I can’t forget my four-legged children. So I’ll stop by Park Avenue Pets and check out the kitty toys. Among those I like best are the wild colored shiny balls that I know Murphy will chase. Cat toys begin at $3.69. And I’ll grab a bit of “Maui Wowie” catnip too. It sells for $4.32 a bag. (Park Avenue Pets, 421 Park Ave., Bremerton. 360-479-1055). I’m almost to the bottom of my shopping list. But I don’t want to forget Aunt Min. At her age — 85 — she’s hard to buy for, but I think chocolates are the best idea. So a trip to Amy’s Chocolates is in order. There, I can get a gift box with some caramels and fudge, and maybe even some chocolate-covered licorice, which retails at $6.25 for four ounces.

Peppermint soaps bearing the season’s colors from F.R.O.G. Soap. Leslie Kelly photo Fudge is $17 a pound and sea salt caramels are $5 for 3 ounces. And then, there’s a great selection of apples, everything from caramel to rocky road, which is covered in chocolate. Apples range from $5 to $10. (Amy’s Decadent Chocolates, 2801 Sixth St., Bremerton. 360-377-2252). There’s just one final stop: that holiday party dress for me. I’m going to Purpose. There, I find such a variety of dresses but I decide on the Christine Dress in red for $59.99. As the tag reads: “This dress was made with hope and dignity by survivors of injustice in the U.S.A.” The Christine Dress has a fit and flare design and is ultra comfortable. And when I purchase a Purpose dress, I’m helping provide refugee women with dignified work and living wage employment. The store also has an assortment of accessories and jewelry. (Purpose, 402 Pacific Ave., Bremerton. 360-813-6040, or www.purposeboutique.com).

TIS THE SEASON CENTRAL KITSAP & BREMERTON

This is the season to think about giving to others T

his is the time of the year when we stop to think about others. Maybe it’s people who are homeless. Or maybe your heart goes out to children in need. Families in crisis, too, are among those we wish well. And then, there’s our furry friends at the local shelter. Whomever tugs at your heartstrings, we urge you to give with the spirit of community, to help your neighbors. Here are a few suggestions of how to give.

CENTRAL KITSAP FOOD BANK Central Kitsap Food Bank provides food at no cost in a caring and respectful manner to people in need in our community, while preserving the dignity of those served. Most needed for the holiday season are stuffing, yams or sweet potatoes, chicken broth, gravy, and Jell-O or pudding mixes. Other needed items are canned veggies and fruit, soup, Top Ramen, tomato products (sauce, stewed, diced), boxed dinners, instant potatoes, pasta, mac and cheese, cereal, crackers, gravy or seasoning mixes, jelly, condiments, tea, juice and powdered drinks. The food bank also needs soap, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, facial and toilet tissue, laundry detergent, dish soap and diapers (all sizes except newborn). Many organizations sponsor food drives for the food bank which serves the greater Silverdale area. To find out how to host a drive, call 360-692-9818, or stop by 3537 Anderson Hill Road, Silverdale. Email: info@ckfoodbank.org, or go to www. ckfoodbank.org. Monetary donations can also be made.

BREMERTON FOODLINE

The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Program collects new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distributes those toys as Christmas gifts to children in need in the community in which the campaign is conducted. In Kitsap County, the Marine Corps League collects toys for distribution at an event at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in December. Collection boxes are located at various retail stores throughout the county. To make a financial donation, go to www.toysfortots.org, and select Washington State and Bremerton as the location. It’s goal is to care for the unwanted and neglected dogs, cats and other animals in Kitsap County, and to adopt as many as possible into loving homes. you need for the fishing you want to do, understanding what fish eat and how to “match the hatch,” learning and practicing the knots that make fly fishing possible — and the opportunity to catch a large fish. The class costs $185 and meets in the dining area at Trophy Lakes Golf & Casting Club in Port Orchard. Basic personal instruction begins at $50 an hour. Four students can take lessons together at a cost of $119 per session. To find out more, go to www. gigharborsailing.com. Want to send your loved one dropping

Some easy tips for holiday entertaining R

ather than worry about the hassle of hosting this holiday season, prepare for visitors and entertaining with these tips.

GET A FRESH START

Trying to prepare everything at the last minute when guests are knocking at your door creates unwanted stress. Instead, clean and prep the house a few days in advance. Quickly turn chores to checks on your to-do list. For example, use a dab of glue to fix the pesky towel rod in the powder room that keeps coming loose, or to repair broken handles on drawers and cabinets. While you’re making home improvements here and there, get organized for holiday guests by relocating your own coats from the hall closets, leaving room for your visitors’ winter gear. If your guests are bringing appetizers or cocktails, clean out the fridge in advance to have ample storage space.

DON’T BUY IT, ‘DIY’ IT

Tired of hanging the same wreath on your door year after year? Create a new, modern focal point that can be used for multiple occasions. Spray paint a wooden wreath form and mini clothespins silver and gold. Once dry, adhere the clothespins to the wreath form in varying layers. Use an adhesive that dries instantly and won’t leave you with messy glue gun strands, such as Krazy Glue’s Maximum Bond No-Run Gel, which will give you time to decorate the rest of your home, rather than cleaning up your crafting space. By flipping a few of the clothespins around on the outside, you can attach pictures of friends and family or holiday cards to create an eye-catching display.

MAKE A GAME PLAN

Seemingly daunting tasks can be fun if you’re strategic and give yourself time to do them right. When it comes to shopping for your main course, avoid weekend crowds. The day of your event, set the table in the morning so that unforeseen events or last minute stops won’t throw you off course.

DECK THE DINNER TABLE

Rather than spending time and money shopping for expensive decor for each upcoming party, create your own one-ofa-kind centerpieces and place settings. Add flair to your tablescape by affixing decorative gems or outdoor sprigs onto napkin rings and handwritten name cards. A glue pen designed for delicate tasks, such as Krazy Glue’s Precision Control Pen, is easy to hold and dries instantly. Guests will appreciate the personal touches, which will be sure to spark some dinner conversation.

WRAP IT UP

Chances are you’ll need some last-minute gifts for unannounced guests. Stock up on a few items with universal appeal. Jars of locally made preserves, decorative candles, wrapped soaps or bottles of wine are good to have on hand to make everyone feel welcome this holiday season. Tis the season to be festive, not frazzled. Keep guests — and yourself — happy with simple tips and tricks, and have time to relax and enjoy your get-together. — StatePoint Media Services

o ahead. Get them off the couch. If you have a friend or family member who spends way too much time inside watching television, why not offer that person the gift of an activity? Throughout Kitsap County, there are many ways to spend some time learning a new activity or sport. Here’s just a sample: At Sound Dive Center, 5000 Burwell St., in Bremerton, beginning scuba driving lessons are $275. The lessons include two weeks of classes that will prepare you to participate in the sport. Additional classes, all the way up to instruction training, are also available. Go to www. soundivecenter.com or call 360-373-6141 for more information. Instructors teach about 200 students a year in the sport and sources say it has been a popular holiday gift in the past. For those who have great balance, there’s ice skating lessons. At Bremerton Ice Center, 1950 Homer Jones Drive, Bremerton, you can give six weeks of ice skating lessons, or six weeks of hockey lessons, for $81.53 per person. The classes include sessions for all ages and all abilities. Skating lessons are about 30 minutes, and hockey lessons are an hour long. The center is also going to offer a twoweek “Holiday Skate School” after the new year. It’s aimed at all of those folks who got ice skates for Christmas, but don’t know how to skate. Cost is expected to be $65 and includes four one-hour classes. Call 360-479-7465, or go to www. bremertonicecenter.com. Olympic Outdoor Center, with locations in Silverdale, Poulsbo and Port Gamble, offers kayaking and paddle boarding lessons. Private instruction begins at $120 per session. Time to stress less and enjoy your holiday season more By LESLIE DULLUMTUTTERROW

M

y husband and I love Christmas. For us, it has much more meaning beyond the bright lights, glistening garland, gift exchanges, family, and food. We keep the reason for the season close to our hearts. For many though, it’s a stressful time, evidenced in the faces of people all around us looking fixated on getting that one “must have” gift, or even that one certain parking space. How did we humans go

from meaningful celebration to chaos so quickly? And what can be done about the amount of extra stress most of us seem to carry during this time of year? Essentially, experiencing less stress begins with us, because it’s not so much about what is going on around us as it is what’s going on within us. We have some decisions to make. If we want to feel less stress, more in control and experience more joy this holiday season, we’ll need to deal with our own thinking first. Let’s begin with the

desired outcome in mind: How do you want to feel during this time? What are the things you value most about the holidays? What type of memories do you want to make, and with who? What are some of the traditions that are important to you that you want to carry on? Once you have answers to those questions, it all becomes clearer and more manageable. By having clarity on how you want to feel, what you value, what memories are important to make (and with who) along with the traditions that are

meaningful for you, you now have a strategic compass to navigate what you say “yes” to and what you say “no” to. If shopping “stress free” is important to you, you might start early, or even procure gifts throughout the year when you travel or stumble on sales. This also lightens the economic load on your cash flow. You might shop largely online to avoid the crowds, parking fiasco and traffic. If you value staying within budget, staying out of the stores may help with that as well. Gift cards are another

great way to keep budgets and stress in check. When it comes to invitations, parties and the like, consider who you really want to spend time with and the significance your family and friends play in your life. Are there invitations you accept just to be polite? Sometimes saying “no” can be very freeing and sanity saving. Schedule time and events with the people who really matter. Consider the traditions that you have enjoyed. Now is a great time to reevaluate which ones make sense to continue, and which ones

you ought to nix or at least modify. The more you approach the holiday season with clarity, intention and forethought, the more balance and joy you are likely to experience. While others are swimming in a sea of stress, you will be recognizable by the spring in your step and the relaxed smile on your face.

OULSBO — It’s that time of year again. The Sugar Plum Fairies are back, dancing in InMotion’s 20th anniversary of the classic “The Nutcracker. The traditional show features professionally trained student performers in pivotal roles, adding a sense of unexpected holiday spice to a classic production with specially choreographed scenes by InMotion’s alumni and instructors. This year’s performance, performed by InMotion’s Dance

Ensemble Northwest, will feature choreographed scenes from three professional dancers and a mix of child, teen, and adult company members. Two of the teens spent parts of their summer studying dance extensively. Morgan Goodfellow, this year’s Sugar Plum Fairy, participated in the Joffrey Experience. Claire Freund, the lead Holly Fairy, trained with Pacific Northwest Ballet. Artistic director Sara Milov is a former professional dancer for the Pittsburg Ballet Theater company. For InMotion, training for the production began in July, because of the performance’s fluid nature. “While other studios start training two months

before the show, we don’t have cookie-cutter positions, therefore we must start much earlier, Foster said. InMotion Studio owner Chris Price agreed, adding that 20 years of sustainability have helped to create the show they have today. See NUTCRACKER, Page 3

Continued from page 2 “We choose not to have professional dancers dance the main roles because we encourage our dancers to participate at the next level,” she said. “The kids carry that responsibility on stage. They have a strong connection to it.” Foster added, “The kids know the show. They measure their growth each year by it. I asked the students one day, if they could have any part in ‘The Nutcracker’ what would it be? I expected a lot of Claras and Sugar Plums, but they said they wanted to be at the next step of the level they were currently at. “Like yoga, we hope dancing becomes a lifestyle for them. It’s athleticism with a passion, but it’s a different type of sport. Dance training is doing something stressful physically and mentally but making it look graceful. It’s about creating rituals, a code of conduct, discipline, focus, and self control in and out of class. We establish a good work ethic and etiquette structure for students. Once that strong foundation is laid, it allows them to be more creative on stage.” Foster delved deeper to discuss the sentiment of the dance tradition. “Dance is one of the last things on earth that will always remain an oral tradition … You need someone older and wiser to teach and mentor the younger generation, that develops strong relationships.” She remembers her time spent with her mentor, Micheal Falotico, former artistic director for 15 years and founder of Dance Ensemble Northwest, who passed away in 2012. “He knew how to enjoy the hard work of dance and he loved performanc-

es,” she said. “He loved watching the kids light up on stage. I would hope he would see this show and enjoy watching the kids up on stage this year.” Foster, who single-handedly choreographed Act I, Scene I — the “family” or “party” scene — said, “The challenge is there’s ages 3 and 4 to adult in this act. There’s a lot of people and a lot of commotion. I really tried to give each dancer a moment to be seen, so each individual dancer has their own moment.” But even with the need for discipline, there is flexibility. “We give our staff the freedom to come in and do their job,” Price said. “We’ve built an environment for professional

instructors to teach what they love to do to others who want to learn. Our staff is very invested in our students, they are

very special to us. We are like a big family.” Goodfellow, the Sugar Plum Fairy, has been dancing since age 3. “I need dance the same way people need oxygen,” she said. Goodfellow, who sustained a potential career-ending hip injury four years ago, has gone through extensive rehabilitation and training to fulfill her role. “It was a two-and-a-halfyear recovery, and I had to take six months off of dance,” she said. “When I came back, my mind knew one thing but I had to completely retrain my body, starting from the bottom and building back up. But every cloud has its silver lining. My injury helped me to learn a lot about myself. I think I’m a stronger, more determined, person.” Participating in “Nutcracker” productions for 10 years, Goodfellow described her journey through the holiday performance over the years. “It never gets old, there is something so classic

as a stray and when no one came to claim her the finders decided to keep her. Their 13 yr old male made it very clear she was not welcome. Macy is a shy girl who likes to be petted and brushed. She is ok with other cats but a bit leary at first. She will be at the Poulsbo Petco hoping to find a new home for the holidays. 1-888-558-PAWS • www.pawsbink.org

Nutcracker

Continued from page 3 about it. I remember my first ‘Nutcracker’ show as a 5-year-old … there was something so magical about it, finishing as the sugar plum fairy now in this pivotal role is really emotional. I get to see the other girls develop their skill, and be the one to mentor them.” Although she says she wants to keep her eyes open, Goodfellow said, she wants to get her bachelors of fine art in dance. “Everyone that knows me knows that I’ll be a dancer,” she said, “I’ll probably audition for a couple companies, because whats the hurt in trying? I want to expose myself to as much as possible.” Price said she hopes

to reach all students who have a passion for performing arts. “We know we’re not the right dance place for everyone in the area. How can we be?” she said. “But we offer a strong level of experience for the serious dancer. Here, kids will get the solid foundation to go to the next level, if that is where they choose to go.” Members of Dance Ensemble Northwest participating for “The Nutcracker” practice five to six days per week. “It’s the same story with the same foundation, but you’re not going to watch the same choreography,” Goodfellow said. “With Miss Sarah, theres always something new.” Milov said each show is unique. “It’s traditional and classical but we always make it fresh. There are many differences this year.” Other changes include Arabian, Chinese, and custom costume design by Foster’s mother, Renee Foster. “The Russian girls are dancing on point too, they have worked very hard,” Milov said. “The level of technique is always improving.” “It’s a collaboration of effort,” Price added, “but

the dancers set the tone for how the show will be, that’s why it changes year to year.” Goodfellow said, “I think this is the best show we’ve ever had. There’s something so special about this group of girls; the show feels really cohesive. It’s really empowering how we’ve danced and worked so hard for this.” This is Milov’s fifth year with the production. “Each year, we strive to improve artistry and technique. We train at a very high level of professionalism and many of our instructors have danced professionally. We all work super hard here.” She added, “Discipline and focus makes great students. We challenge them, even the little ones. We raise the bar high and they rise to the occasion. We can teach all else, but we can’t teach effort.” According to Milov, you will see all that and more in this year’s show. “The entire show reflects 100 percent effort. We really hold our own. We have the same professionalism and creative energy as the other renowned companies ... “At this level, this is not a hobby mentality. This isn’t just a job, this is our life,” Milov said.

Navy Band NW performs holiday concert series BREMERTON — This band is one of the busiest and most respected bands alive. And you can hear them perform in concert for free. Navy Band Northwest performs Dec. 10-16 in “Home for the Holidays,” a concert series that is free and open to the public. Locally, the band will perform 7 p.m. Dec. 10 in the Bremerton High School Performing Arts Center. Other performances are scheduled in Shelton, Whidbey Island and Everett. Navy Band Northwest’s jazz ensemble and its rock band “Passage” — which Josh Kerns of KIRO radio calls “a contemporary face on the fighting force” — will perform such timeless classics as “Frosty the Snowman” as done by Harry Connick Jr., “Please Come Home for Christmas” as done by the

Eagles, and many more. Santa Claus will make an appearance at each performance. Navy Band Northwest (www.facebook.com/ NavyBandNorthwest) is the premier U.S. Navy musical organization in the Northwest, and its 35 Navy musicians perform at least 400 engagements each year — military and civilian events, according to the band. Navy Band Northwest is led by Lt. Bruce Mansfield and falls operationally under the command of Rear Adm. Jeff Ruth, commander, Navy Region Northwest. If this band is one of the busiest alive, it’s also the most disciplined, as illustrated in this Q&A. Q: How many performers are with the band? A: Including the director and assistant director, 35 total.

Navy Band Northwest performs in “Home for the Holidays,” Dec. 10 in Bremerton. The concert is free and open to the public. U.S. Navy Q: How are musicians chosen to perform with the band? A: The first step is to contact a Navy recruiter for an initial screening interview. All applicants must audition live at any Navy band or the Naval School of Music. Taped auditions are not accepted. They must demonstrate the ability to read music at an advanced level, perform at a mature musical level, and be well versed

in different styles (jazz, classical, rock, Latin, etc.). Auditions are held as they are scheduled (i.e., when you are prepared, or have contacted a Navy recruiter). The audition report is sent to Fleet Band Activities headquarters in Millington, Tennessee, where the audition reports are evaluated. Applicants found to be musically qualified are guaranteed an See BAND, Page 8

A humane solution to pet homelessness L

ucille has become a poster pet for Kitsap Humane Society. In fact, the shepherd-mix pup made headlines some months back as a shining example of our Rescue Me program, which transfers animals at risk for euthanasia at crowded and under-resourced shelters to KHS where they are cared for and made available for adoption. For Lucille, rescue came just in time. On the day she was to be put down due to constant and severe seizures, a volunteer rushed to the South Sound shelter, which was without veterinary services, and transported her back to KHS, where she received medication and training and was adopted into a loving home. For me, Lucille’s warm brown eyes and happy face smiling from the pages of our marketing

materials has a deeper message to deliver. There was a time when KHS would not have been able to offer Lucille refuge and a second chance at life because our own kennels were crowded with unwanted animals. But the growing success of our spay/neuter program in reducing the local population of homeless pets has given us the room to offer shelter to animals in need, and dramatically lower the Humane Society’s euthanasia rate to under 5 percent. Last year, the Rescue Me Program saved over a thousand animals. That would not have been possible without our spay/ neuter program, which performed 4,684 surgeries

— 65 percent more than in the past four years. This year, we are well on our way to surpassing that number. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, there is a national pet homelessness crisis, which results in millions of healthy dogs and cats being euthanized in the United States each year because there aren’t enough homes. Spay/ neuter helps prevent pet homelessness and saves lives. There are some medical and behavioral benefits as well. Your female pet will live a longer, healthier life, the ASPCA notes, as spaying helps prevent uterine infections and breast tumors, which are malignant or cancerous in about 50 percent of dogs and 90 percent of cats. The organization advises spaying your pet before her first

heat to provide the best protection from disease. Similarly, neutering male pets prevents testicular cancer and some prostrate problems. The ASPCA also lists these behavioral benefits to spaying or neutering: n Your spayed female pet will not go into heat. Female cats tend to go into heat four to five days every three weeks during breeding season and can yowl and urinate more often to advertise for mates. n Your male dog will be

less likely to roam away from home. n Unneutered dogs and cats tend to mark their territory by spraying urine. A neutered dog may be less likely to mount other dogs, people and objects, and some aggression problems may be avoided by early neutering. In addition to ensuring all cats and dogs are spay/ neutered before adoption, KHS provides a low-cost spay/neuter program for about 2,000 low-income pet owners a year. KHS also hosts one walk-in

spay/neuter day for cats on the last Tuesday of every month — no appointments needed. Our Litter Abatement Program provides free spay surgery for any female dog or cat whose offspring is surrendered to the shelter’s adoption program. And KHS supports Trap-Neuter-Release efforts in Kitsap County by offering free- and lowcost spay/neuter surgery for outdoor and feral “community cats.” Learn more about these programs by visiting www.kitsap-humane.org. — Karen Reed-Matthee is being succeeded by Rebekah Johnson as writer of this column.
