bits are the ones most commonly seen around Langley, and were likely released by owners and from the fairgrounds decades ago. Rabbit breeding season, according to a Living with Wildlife page about rabbits on the state agency’s website, begins in mid-February and continues through late summer. A 30-day gestation period means a female rabbit can have “several litters” with four to eight young each year. As early as two weeks old, young rabbits begin eating vegetation, and by five weeks they eat alongside their mother. “The number of rabbits in a given area will increase and decrease in a cycle connected with predator populations and food availability,” the state wildlife website states. A two-week window for prospective buyers to make offers on the Holmes Harbor Golf Course has come and gone without a single bid. For Holmes Harbor Sewer District commissioners who are trying to shed unwanted ownership of the golf course’s 50 acres of fairways, that they didn’t get even a nibble was disappointing, but not surprising. “We got no bids, but we didn’t really expect any,” said Commissioner Stan Walker, president of the sewer district’s board. Other than being approached late last year by an unnamed albeit interested party, Walker said the board has heard barely a whisper of curiosity from potential investors or owners. The only known interest was voiced by Kevin Hanchett of Holmes Harbor, LLC. Hanchett said this week he and business partner Mike Hooper had considered making an offer to own the entire golf course, but passed due to restrictions placed on the fairways by the district board. “It just seemed any proposal we’d come up with would be too low for them to accept,” he said. The sewer district owns the course fairways, irrigation system, retention ponds, infrastructure and related equipment. Hanchett and the LLC own the clubhouse, waterfront property and an over-water dock. The divided ownership has been a reality since 2013 when the sewer district purchased the assets from the LLC for

By JESSIE STENSLAND Whidbey News Group Complicated litigation that’s pitting the Island County prosecutor and the board of commissioners against each other has become even more complicated. The commissioners last week filed a motion to intervene in the lawsuit. If granted, it would allow the commissioners to formally join the litigation and argue their case. In addition, the commissioners are asking that a motion for summary judgment be pushed back at least one month. Commissioner Helen Price Johnson said the commissioners felt compelled to intervene in the lawsuit in order to protect their capacity to govern effectively. “This lawsuit is clearly a challenge to our ability to enter into contracts,” she said. Island County Prosecutor Greg Banks filed the lawsuit Aug. 12 in Island County Superior Court against attorney Susan Drummond, whom the commissioners contracted with to provide legal advice on the ongoing comprehensive plan amendment. The lawsuit alleges that she was taking over one of the elected prosecutor’s duties without his consent, which is prohibited by the state constitution. The Washington Association of Prosecuting Attorneys board unanimously voted to support the lawsuit and authorized its staff attorney to represent Banks. She SEE LAWSUIT, A8

A few bunnies munch on grass at St. Hubert Church on De Bruyn Avenue. Residents have complained about the landscape damage done by voracious rabbits, prompting the city to engage in talks with other agencies about possible solutions.

Mayoral candidates weigh in on Langley’s booming bunnies Both say juries still out on rabbits’ fate By BEN WATANABE South Whidbey Record A seemingly runaway rabbit population made national headlines, has Langley city leaders trying to figure out ways to address the issue, and may well become a top election issue in the 2015 mayoral election. Yet neither candidate — Tim Callison and Sharon Emerson — appears ready to support a full-on frontal assault on the furry invaders. Emerson said she was unlikely to pursue a lethal option if elected, while Callison said he would not rule it out. On the heels of a multi-agency meeting about what options may be available for curbing a growing nonnative rabbit population, the candidates shared their take on how they would handle it as the city’s chief executive. A community meeting is

planned in early October to lay out ongoing problems, from damaged fields and landscaping to compromised structures, injuries and the potential for diseases along with potential solution options such as trapping, falconry and sterilization. They offered different takes, from Callison’s wait-and-see approach to Emerson’s reluctance about a lethal option. Neither candidate said they would propose a guns-blazing, Elmer Fudd-esque response. Emerson questioned whether it is really a problem, and if so, to what extent it required a plan from the city. According to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, there are two native species of rabbits in Washington (Nuttall’s cottontail and Pygmy rabbit) and two that were introduced (Eastern cottontail and domestic rabbit). Mayor issues awards for city interns’ aid

A pair of interns who helped spruce up the city’s gardens and shuttle people around for the summer were recognized by Langley Mayor Fred McCarthy this week. Presented during Monday’s city council Sept. 2 meeting, Langley Main Street Association interns Grace Swanson and Emily Martin were presented with certificates of appreciation from the mayor. Langley Main Street is a nonprofit service organization that works to improve downtown areas, and is not associated with city government other than some services it provides to public areas and events, such as tending to banners, hanging flower baskets and gardens and driving the electric golf cart shuttle around town on the weekends. “With any luck, they’ll be back next summer,” said Janet Ploof, Langley Main Street Association president. Martin’s name was misspelled on the framed certificate, for which the mayor apologized and promised to correct. Martin is a 2011 South Whidbey High School alumna and recent graduate of Oregon State University, where she earned a bachelor of science in horiculture with a focus in environmental landscape and urban forestry. Swanson, a 2012 South Whidbey High School alumna, is currently a student at the University of Washington. Two official city interns with the Langley Public Works Department were also recognized by the mayor. James Myers and Jeremiah Pace served with Why w a i t to public works thiss ave sum-m on e y ? Port hammers out lease, position details for farm Business owners voice scepticism over plan for 2016 By MEGAN HANSEN Whidbey News Group Port of Coupeville commissioners took strides Monday toward taking over management of the Greenbank Farm. During a special meeting, the board developed a basic job description for a farm director and will be advertising the position, they agreed upon lease details with tenants and will solicit for businesses interested in running activities at the farm. Discussions around farm employees ranged from having two key operations and events positions to including an assistant farm manager. “I think we need to get going and advertise the farm director immediately,” Commissioner John Carr said. “It needs to be someone with practical experience.” Commissioner Marshall Bronson suggested having port Executive Director David Day interview potential candidates for the position and make a recommendation to the

and forth about establishing a base to start negotiations, discussing the nearly 13 percent leasehold tax, CPI and lease lengths. Currently, the Greenbank Farm Management Group covers the cost of the leasehold tax out of the rents collected. It is not a tax the tenants pay on top of their lease rates. The total cost for leasehold taxes at the farm for all tenants is about $13,000. Commissioners initially decided the tenants were going to have to pay that nearly 13 percent tax and were looking at raising tenant rates to what they considered fair market value. Commissioners started throwing around base figures like 85 cents a square foot, but Day objected. “I want to make sure the commission isn’t negotiating leases universally in a public meeting,” Day said, saying that lease negotiations were not a public process and that each tenant will want their own terms. One tenant, present at the meeting, said the port would be hard pressed to get tenants to sign a lease which raised their rates so high, especially with all the uncertainty at the farm. “You’re currently asking tenants to pay more for less,” said Rob Schouten, who runs a gallery at

the farm. “You don’t have a team in place. We don’t know how the farm is going to look.” Carr, who has a background in real estate, said he understood where tenants were coming from. “It’s a leap of faith for everyone,” Carr said. “We’re looking at total chaos,” Schouten said. “Keep us at the rates we are for a year and that gives you a year to get things worked out. “Let us see what management is going to look like.” Diamanti made a motion, which was approved by all, to keep current tenant leases the same for 2016 except to include a 1.22 percent cost of living increase. The port will cover the $13,000 in leasehold taxes. Leases will then be renegotiated for 2017 after the port has time to determine fair market value for the rental spaces. Day was perplexed by the motion as it seems the commissioners unilaterally set the lease terms with the motion. “There’s nothing to negotiate,” he said. While the decision to cover the $13,000 in leasehold taxes can be fiscally done, Bronson said, it doesn’t get the port further in its goal of having the farm financially sustainable or even profitable.

COUNTY Fire marshal fully lifts burn ban Island County Sheriff Mark Brown, who is also the county’s fire marshal, lifted a ban on outdoor burning this week. The ban removal went into effect at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22 according to a Monday news release. The decision was made after evaluations indicated an adequate increase in fuel moisture levels. Burning of residential yard debris and land-clearing debris is permanently banned in Coupeville, Freeland, Langley, Oak Harbor and their respective urban growth areas. Burning of this kind requires a permit where open burning is allowed. All written burn permits will be issued through the Island County Health Department, according to the release. Verbal permits for fires less than four feet in diameter may be obtained by calling the Northwest Clean Air Agency at 360428-1617 ext. 4. To obtain a written permit for fires greater than four feet in diameter, call

360-679-7350 for North and Central Whidbey; 360-221-5111 ext. 7350 for South Whidbey; or 360-387-3443 ext. 228 for Camano Island. If a property falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of Natural Resources, call 360-856-3500 for permit information. Recreational fires less than three feet in diameter and shorter than two feet high do not require a permit. Burning of garbage and the use of burn barrels is illegal throughout Washington; violators are subject to fines that can exceed $1,000, according to the release. Visit www.islandcounty eh.org/page/276 for details, or call the Northwest Clean Air Agency at 360428-1617 for questions or concerns about air quality issues.

LANGLEY Dog House partial street vacation OK’d The partial vacation of a sliver of Anthes Avenue in connection with the restoration of the Dog House Tavern is about to be a done deal. As part of a land swap with Charlie and Janice Kleiner, owners of the Dog House Tavern on First Street and Anthes, a public hearing had to be held on the partial street vacation. Langley’s contracted attorney, Jeff Taraday of Lighthouse Law Group in Seattle, made a couple of minor changes to the deal which were agreed to by

the Kleiners. One of the changes added a clear effective date only after receiving the statutory deed, per state law, Taraday said. The city cannot give up the property until receiving the fair trade, which in this case is a small tract of land to join to Seawall Park on the north end of the building. “What I’ve heard is acceptable,” Charlie Kleiner said after being asked if he wanted to comment before the council’s vote. The council unanimously approved the street vacation with two amendments. The way is paved now for the Kleiners to submit building permit applications and begin the process of restoring and renovating the century-old historic building.

tant who is helping inform the city, school district and port district about how to manage rabbits, said he has been out counting bunnies. More importantly, said Layman, is that he’s been keeping track of their locations. From that he hopes to establish a boundary marking their primary areas of habitation. “I’ve been driving around at night and by day with a little map, just like I would do if I was doing a biological test, a biological survey,” he said in a phone interview Tuesday morning. Any estimate of the number, however, may not be a deciding factor for the agencies. Layman said the rabbits are already proving to be a pest for residents and the three public entities. “The important part is that there’s a problem,” he said. “It wouldn’t matter if there was 500 of them or just 100, the damage is being done,” he added. Callison has spoken openly about the nuisance of having rabbits chew up his landscaped garden and the costly impact of their appetites to neighbors’ properties. Even though he’s lost plenty of vegetation to the chubby bunnies, he wasn’t seeking revenge by promising to call for a

cull. “Personally, I like the rabbits,” he said by phone Monday. “They’re cool to see around, especially the babies.” “We’ve given over the front yard to them,” he added. “They’ve eaten everything they like.” He and wife Robin Black, a city councilwoman, erected what is supposed to be rabbit-proof fencing. That can be costly, he said, and may not be practical for the entire city as existing sight lines would change. Emerson doesn’t have a bunny problem in her yard, despite being closer to the presumed larger concentration on the Langley Middle School and Island County Fairgrounds properties. Her persistent pest is deer, she said, which are dealt

with by spreading a liquid fence, essentially a strong scent that also helps repel rabbits. Having little prior personal problem with bunnies, she asked people around town what they’d like done. What she heard, she said, was a myriad of answers. “We’re probably going to have to have a wide variety of solutions,” she said. It’s unlikely, however, that she will endorse a lethal option if elected Langley mayor. With a standing rabbit as her campaign logo, Emerson said the use of the animal was unconnected to the city’s population. She had recently read the “Watership Down” book series and was drawn to the creature for its characteristics of being wise, careful and resourceful. “I didn’t realize they’d be so controversial when I picked it,” she said. “I’m sticking with it.” Callison’s logo is the tail of a whale — the other and more widely appreciated unofficial mascot of Langley. Despite reports from public officials that the rabbits are compromising structures at the fairgrounds and are potential health hazards at the middle school and for pets, Emerson said she has seen the benefit of having bunnies around town. Visitors like them, and she personally enjoys seeing a few regulars in her yard. “My daughter’s friends come and they’re entranced by the bunnies,” she said. “They don’t care about the whales.” “I look at bunnies and they make me happy,” she added. “They’re charming. That’s why we’re having this problem. If they looked like rats we wouldn’t have this discussion.” Callison also agreed that the fluffy, cuddly look of the non-native bunnies helps

garner sympathy for the critters. But Callison was also intimately familiar with the health risk of rabbits. The feces carries a parasite that can affect pets, including his small dog, which became sick. “Pretty much everyone agrees they’ve become a trademark of Langley and they’re nice to have around, but hopefully … they’ll realize they’ve come out of balance,” he said. Callison warned that while lots of people have grown accustomed to them, they will continue to breed without many predators. “There’s going to be a cost of doing nothing,” he said. While neither candidate wanted to see a St. Patrick-style clearing of the serpent/bunny on the isle of Whidbey, they were both interested in hearing what people think should be done. Both candidates said the public’s voice was important at the upcoming community meeting, and would go a long way in determining what action they would pursue if elected.

$200,000. The fairways are the drain fields for the district’s treated effluent, making them an essential component of the utility’s waste water treatment system. Wresting greater control over their maintenance is the primary reason the board bought them two years ago. But with conflicting interests, it’s been a bumpy road for the two parties. Legal argument over facility use, and the conflict of a public entity holding title to what is essentially a for-profit facility, is why the sewer district commissioners are now seeking to undo their earlier decision to buy the fairways. Last month, the board put the fairways up for bid with a minimum asking price of $450,000. The land came with heavy restrictions, however, such as a provision that gave the district the authority to maintain the fairways and then bill the new owner for the work. That left a prospective buyer with little guarantee to manage their own costs, Hanchett said. “In general, it’s a risk factor that was unacceptable,” he said. While Hanchett was con-

The idea is to bring the entire course back under single ownership, which Hanchett and Walker agree would likely be the best thing for everyone involved. Walker said it’s “conceivable” that the district would reopen the bidding process with a lower minimum offer, but he’s not optimistic it would make a difference. What the board decides remains to be seen, he said. The board will discuss the matter again Oct. 8. Walker noted that the golf course remains open for business.

Whether buying or selling a home, your moving date will be an important consideration. Also called the “possession date”, it is one of the items which is negotiated and included in the contract of sale. Possession dates are most often established in relation to the “closing date”, the date on which the purchase money is paid and the title transfers to the purchasers. In a contract, the possession date may read “upon transfer of title and disbursement of funds”, or merely “at closing.” Is possession always given at closing? Not necessarily. Remember, it is negotiable. It can be whatever date is acceptable to both buyers and sellers. The possession date may be “fourteen days after closing” or “seven days prior to closing.” Notice that possession is still relative to the closing date. If possession occurs on any date other than at closing, a short term lease agreement should be prepared. It should include the amount of any rent to be paid, what happens if the sale is not consummated, who is responsible for damage or needed repairs during the lease, etc. All agreements related to possession should be in writing. Any changes made after the contract has been signed should also be reduced to writing and signed by all parties.

Demand accountability from hospital board Whidbey General Hospital may be out about $250,000 for a behind-closed-doors decision made by unknown hospital officials. A decision by the state Attorney General’s office to file an appeal of a ruling in the case of Whidbey General’s Chief Nursing Officer Linda Gipson last week is yet another example of the perils of secrecy and an insular culture infecting the hospital’s unabashedly stubborn board of directors and administration. The attorney representing Gipson revealed in court this summer that the hospital had been paying his bills for providing criminal defense. Apparently Gipson’s criminal defense was backed by a bottomless pit of public dollars. After an unusually long and complex trial in Island County District Court, a jury acquitted Gipson of assaulting a restrained, mental-health patient. Afterward, Island County Prosecutor Greg Banks questioned how the taxpayer-funded hospital district could legally pay for an employee’s criminal defense. It’s common for agencies to fund civil cases against public employees, but criminal cases are another matter. Banks said he could only find one other such case in the nation. Rightly, Banks also questioned when, and how, the hospital leaders made the decision to pay for Gipson’s criminal defense, saying that it should have been a decision made in public. Banks never received an answer. It seemed somewhat of a moot issue after the judge ruled that Gipson, and by extension the hospital, will be reimbursed from a special state fund that pays lawyers’ bills for people acquitted of assault by self defense. The Attorney General’s office has thrown a bucket of icecold water on those plans, announcing that it filed an appeal of the judge’s decision for reimbursement. The AG’s office is questioning the judge’s refusal to recuse himself — his wife is a nurse at the hospital — as well as his rulings in the case. If the AG is successful in its appeal, the hospital won’t be reimbursed for Gipson’s legal fees. In addition to paying Gipson’s attorney approximately $250,000, the hospital hired two different attorneys to fight the county prosecutor’s subpoenas for internal investigations. The attorneys sat at the table with Gipson and supported her defense. Some people will be tempted to blame the prosecutor or Gipson for the predicament, but that would be misplaced. The members of the hospital board are ultimately responsible for what appears to be a secret gifting of public tax dollars, which is contrary to law. Two of the hospital board members are on the ballot this November. Voters would be well served to a send a message by telling the board they will not tolerate a culture of secrecy and misuse of public tax dollars. The hospital board works for the public, not employees.

Letters Elections

Gardner should get reelected to hospital board Editor, I am writing to endorse Georgia Gardner. I have met her only once, but she is articulate, passionate and knows the business. She is particularly qualified to continue in this position. I am particularly wary of someone (Mr. Rob Born) who wants to affiliate the hospital. To me it is code for limiting women’s choice, as many hospitals in the state are finding that affiliation with religiously affiliated hospitals means limiting women’s access to needed healthcare. As one raised a Catholic, I can tell you, my mother refused to give birth in Catholic hospitals. She feared for her own life. The letters attempting to smear Gardner smack of desperation. Mr. Gunn could have continued to appeal county action or paid the additional money, but he instead blames Ms. Gardner for choices he made. Whidbey Island has only one hospital. Let’s keep it independent and strong by voting for Georgia Gardner. CHERI FILION Clinton

Sharon Emerson will get the Giannis’ votes Editor, As former Langley business owners and teachers at Langley Middle School, we’ve been keen observers of Langley happenings. We think Sharon Emerson

would be the best choice for mayor. As co-owner of Island Home Nursing, which cares for those in need, she’s also a fiscally responsible local business owner. Her deep roots in the community go back 35 years and span all income brackets and ages. Sharon is an effective collaborator and connector of different parts of our community. She engages with people in a direct way that gives her a feel for the pulse of the community. She’s not afraid to ask questions and listens carefully to the answers. Having talked to her extensively, we know she has positive, concrete ideas to attract young families to Langley and improve the lives of the ordinary residents. We are excited for the residents of Langley to have the opportunity to vote for such a capable woman. Please vote for Sharon Emerson. Sincerely, ROCCO and KATHY GIANNI Langley

Response

Rules for board of equalization decisions are clear Editor, I was sorry to read in Mr. Gunn’s Sept. 9 letter to the editor, “Past experience means no support,” that he took his property tax appeal personally; however, I have seen it happen. I don’t remember the particulars of his case, but I expect, from his letter, that it was similar to many others. I ser ved on the Island County Board of Equalization for five years and on the State Board of Tax Appeals for five years before that, so I have been the bearer of bad news for more property owners than Mr. Gunn. The problem stems from the law that we are bound to use in our decisions: RCW 84.40.0301: “Upon review by any court, or appellate body, of a determination of the valuation of property for purposes of taxation, it

shall be presumed that the determination of the public official charged with the duty of establishing such value is correct but this presumption shall not be a defense against any correction indicated by clear, cogent and convincing evidence.” The underlined portion is what defeats most owners. The appellate body, in this case the Island County Board of Equalization, is required to assume the assessor’s valuation is correct unless the appellant provides a very high standard of proof an alternative value. This is higher than “more likely than not” proof; it has to be clear and it has to be compelling. As Mr. Gunn states, he didn’t have any proof to provide, thus our decision was mandated for us. No amount of discussion could change that. At the county board, we often scheduled 15 to 16 cases per day and it was necessary to keep things moving in order to hear all the cases within the SEE MORE LETTERS, A7

The county board gives excellent instructions to property owners and I urge them to follow them closely so they are prepared to be successful in their appeals. My current position as hospital commissioner, while also constrained by

was appointed as a special prosecutor for the purposes of the case. In a declaration filed with the court, Price Johnson argued that Banks didn’t name the commissioners in his lawsuit because he “didn’t want to face the commissioners directly.” But Banks said the only parties in such quo warranto lawsuits, under the law, are the state and “the person who has intruded upon the prosecutor’s office, to the detriment of the voters.” He also said he tried to avoid the difficulties that would arise if the

contract with her after Banks threatened legal action; that means the county is paying Drummond’s legal bills. In fact, the commissioners hired an attorney to represent Drummond at a cost of up to $35,000. And earlier this month, the commissioners hired Seattle law firm Short, Cressman & Burgess to provide them with legal advice on the lawsuit. Price Johnson said the board met with the Seattle attorney in executive session to discuss the lawsuit. Under state law, the board can meet behind closed doors to discuss pending litigation. In this case, the commissioners aren’t a party in the lawsuit, but Price Johnson

board was an opposing party in the lawsuit and he hopes “to work with them as collegially and productively as possible.” Price Johnson emphasized that the controversy could be over if Banks simply dropped the “unnecessarily distracting” action. “For the good of the county, the Board of Commissioners continues to desire a collaborative relationship between the prosecutor’s office and outside counsel in the updating of the Island County Comprehensive Plan,” she said. “We hope that Greg Banks will change his mind and allow this to happen.” The litigation could become expensive. The commissioners indemnified Drummond in the

argued that the executive session was allowed because the lawsuit directly relates to their contract with Drummond. Banks’ attorney filed a motion for summary judgment last week, asking the judge to oust Drummond from his office. The motion states that the facts of the case are not in dispute and that the only issue is for the court to determine whether Drummond “has a de jure right to exercise the office of the Island County Prosecuting Attorney.” The motion focuses on the importance of county prosecutors as independent and elected positions. “As an elected officer, the prosecuting attorney may exercise his or her independent judgment without

fear or repercussion from other branches of government or other government actors,” the motion states. The commissioners’ motion to intervene requests that Banks’ summary judgment hearing, which is scheduled for Oct. 15, be delayed by at least a month to give their attorney time to respond. Banks said the lawsuit is narrowly focused and is an important issue in the state that needs to be resolved. “We wanted a quick and simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answer to a single legal question,” he said. “We were hoping that the other side would want the same thing, rather than engaging in expensive delay tactics.”

Falcons lose to runheavy Eagles, 29-8 By EVAN THOMPSON South Whidbey Record

Evan Thompson / The Record

Senior Falcon cross country runner Evan Mellish sprints the final stretch of the South Whidbey Invitational on Saturday.

By EVAN THOMPSON South Whidbey Record Senior boys cross country runner Evan Mellish may not have hit his goal of running a sub-18-minute 5-kilometer on Saturday at the 2015 South Whidbey Invitational, but there’s still plenty to be happy about. After missing most of the 2014 season with a broken foot, Mellish set a personal best with a time of 18 minutes and six seconds for a 15th overall finish at South Whidbey’s annual home cross country meet. Sure, there’s room to improve, he says, but it’s a step in the right direction. “I was hoping to break 18 (minutes) to start off the season, so then I’d just have to worry about getting past 17,” Mellish said. “It was a good way to come back. There were a lot of familiar faces that I was competing against and all but one I was able to keep ahead of.” Over 30 teams attended the event, which then split into two separate divisions based on the size of the competing schools. Mellish led a Falcon boys

team which finished third overall in Division 2 at the invite. Mellish was considered by head cross country coach Doug Fulton as one of the hardest working members of the team this summer, after putting in over 400 miles of off-season workouts. “He really dedicated himself to summer training,” Fulton said. “Senior leader, he just did a great job this summer. You got to put miles in if you’re going to be a cross country runner. And it shows. Most of the boys did too, they worked hard, and that’s how championships are won, in the summertime.” Mellish was followed close behind by junior Justin Gonzales, who finished 19th overall with a time of 18 minutes and 20 seconds. Gonzales was among the front runners for the first portion of the race, which loops across and back around the baseball field and onto the track, followed by the trails near the upper athletic fields. He was eventually passed by Mellish, but Gonzales

Falcon sophomore Elizabeth Donnelly finished 25th overall at South Whidbey’s annual cross country meet. did beat out King’s runner Cameron Chew by a half second and was 14 seconds behind Mellish for his 19thplace finish. Junior Collin Burns finished in the top 40 with his 18-minute, 47-second time, while juniors Will Simms and Cory Ackerman finished 60th and 65th overall, respectively. Sophomore Elizabeth Donnelly spearheaded the Falcon girls, who finished 12th in the team standings. Donnelly, who has been dealing with a hip injury since the start of the season, finished 25th overall with a time of 23:01:93. “I felt great on the first

mile and then I just kind of died after the hill,” Donnelly said. “I just have to work on that for districts.” Falcon senior Iona Rohan finished 40th overall after completing the course in 24 minutes and five seconds. Sophomore Annika Hustad finished in the top 70 with a time of 25 minutes and 48 seconds. The Falcons have suffered setbacks from a string of injuries and illnesses to start the season. Senior Mallorie Mitchem, the Falcons’ top returning girl who finished 13th overall at the Class 1A state championships, sat out due to tendinitis.

Cedar Park Christian made a strong case for the revival of “three yards and a cloud of dust” after beating South Whidbey’s football team, 29-8, on Saturday night at Waterman’s Field. Behind the legs of Eagles quarterback Jaden Sheffey, Cedar Park Christian’s Wing-T offense dominated time of possession and kept the Falcons on their heels for most of the game. In the Eagles’ wake were a number of injuries suffered by South Whidbey. The Falcons saw starters Jared Eckert, Max Divina, Courtney Dunnigan, and Austin Sterba relegated to the sidelines throughout the game. A total of seven Falcons were injured. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen that in my life as a player or a coach,” said Falcon head coach Michael Coe. “Our depth is really hurting us, it’s really hurting us a lot.” The Eagles got on the board first when Sheffey rushed for a 1-yard touchdown in the first quarter. The Falcons went threeand-out the following drive, but Falcon junior middle linebacker Hunter Newman managed to control the dam-

age when he recovered a fumble and returned it to the Eagles’ 29-yard line. Falcon senior quarterback Charlie Patterson converted a crucial third-and-15 to the Eagles’ 15, which later set up an 8-yard touchdown pass from Patterson to Sterba on fourth-and-4. It went all downhill for South Whidbey from there. Two Eagles possessions later, Cedar Park Christian chewed up four minutes and 58 seconds of game clock to score on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Sheffey to Andrew Britton to enter halftime leading 16-8. Cedar Park Christian owned the third quarter, holding possession of the ball for 11 minutes and 11 seconds while adding another touchdown. “They were just pushing the ball down the field,” Newman said. The Falcons were unable to muster an offensive effort, and turnovers and penalties tripped them up throughout the rest of the game. “I’m definitely disappointed about the loss,” Patterson said. “I feel like as a team, we’ve definitely tightened up a lot. Defensively, we were scrappy, we just didn’t make plays on third and fourth down. I feel like we’re really close to being that team that we can be.”

Mr. South Whidbey brings back old favorites 10th annual men’s pageant for Friends of Friends has a twist By EVAN THOMPSON South Whidbey Record When John Auburn turned 50, he decided that he was going to do something that would embarrass himself. So, he dressed up like Lady Gaga and vamped around the stage at the 2012 Mr. South Whidbey Pageant in a parody of the pop singer’s song, “Bad Romance.” Though he fell short of beating out Nick Welles, Auburn exemplified what he’s told his children. “I taught my kids: Don’t take yourself so serious,” Auburn said. “Laugh at yourself and don’t even care what people think.” Auburn will take the stage once again and perform at the 2015 Mr. South Whidbey Pageant at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Freeland Hall, hosted by the Friends of Friend Medical Support Fund. Tickets cost $30 and may be purchased at Moonraker Books in Langley or Paint Escape in Freeland. All proceeds from the event are donated to the Friends of Friends fund, which offers financial help to people on South Whidbey strapped with medical-related bills they cannot afford. Just like they have every year, contestants will put their talents and personalities on display to gain the admiration and votes from the community in the hopes of winning the coveted title of Mr. South Whidbey. One vote is equal to $1, and the contestant who raises the most money wins. The 10th annual pageant has all of its original elements, such as the Q&A and talent presentation, but there is an added twist. The nine participating contestants are all returning crowd favorites from previous pageants. “If you missed them the first time, here’s a chance to see [them],” said Christi Ruscigno, chair woman of the Mr. South Whidbey Committee. “It gives people a chance to see the more unique acts that have come over the years.” This year’s contestants are Auburn, Welles, Rocco Gianni, George Henny, Randy Hudson, Paul Matthews, Frank Parra, Jim Scullin and Gordon Stewart. Sue Frause will also return as the Mistress of Ceremonies. “It’s a celebration of what this group has accomplished — 10 years and raising all that money,” Auburn said. “But then also,

I think bringing it back to the island, ramping it up, is really good and it’s gonna be a good highlight.” More than 20 other previous contestants will also be part of the show when they are intro-

duced in the opening ceremonies of the pageant. Hudson, who won the first event in 2006 as a one-man band

by singing an original song, playing the bass, guitar, and harmonica, was glad to see the event had added spice to it this year. “I think it’s a nice gesture from Friends of Friends to recognize not only the nine participants, but to also invite everybody back, because

I’m sure every guy who’s done it has put a lot into it and gotten a lot out of it,” Hudson said. “I thank Friends of Friends for what they do and inviting us back.” The return of previous contestants has also upped the competition level, Hudson said. Hudson has put time and effort into making and passing out flyers to friends and neighbors to endorse his run for the title. “I think every guy there has got a good chance and they’ve proven it and they’ve done it before,” Hudson said. “I think it’s really going to be up for grabs.”

TWO LOCATIONS:

Justin Burnett has worked in newspapers for more than 10 years, the past eight on Whidbey. He’s had desks at The Whidbey Examiner and Whidbey News-Times. He’s current editor of the South Whidbey Record. Justin is a believer in good photojournalism. “There’s nothing like an awesome image to help tell a story,” he said. Justin’s favorite story to cover to date was the raising of an anchor potentially linked to Capt. George Vancouver’s famed 17th century exploration of Puget Sound. Burnett grew up in Hawaii on Kauai and Oahu. At 36, he jokes that he’s now an old man with a wife and son, 14, who just started high school. “I’m pretty famous around the office for my dad jokes,” he said. “People love them.

It doesn’t get more local than that.

CONSUMER ALERT

Scammers are targeting newspapers Credit card scam artists have conceived a new scheme involving newspapers. Law Enforcement advises the usual precaution: Use caution when speaking to anyone about sensitive financial information over the phone. The scammers pose as advertising representatives from the newspaper, and call customers who have placed ads or classified notices, to report a problem with the customer’s credit card.

• Ask the caller to identify himself/herself and the office he/she is calling from, including the address. If you do not recognize the caller, hang up and call your local newspaper office directly. • Before providing payment information to a caller, ask for information that would be unknown to scammers. This could include your billing address or previous payment information. A newspaper representative can verify your original payment method, check numbers, banking institution and/or the last four digits and expiration of your credit card. • If the caller claims your check was returned or credit card was declined, verify this information by calling your bank or credit card company or by checking your bank statement. If you receive a scam call like this, write down all information you can about the call, such as: the caller’s name, phone number, time of day and duration of call. If you feel you have given your information to one of these scammers – Immediately contact your bank and/or credit card company to place a hold on the transaction in question or on your account and begin a fraud investigation. Callers who may have already given financial information to callers should also call their bank or credit card company to place an immediate hold on their accounts and begin a fraud investigation.

If you are a victim of this scam please contact this office 360-394-8704, your local police department, or the consumer fraud division of the Washington Attorney General’s office.
