Summers run smoothly with seasonal staff; many grew up on Island By Katie Metzger

kmetzger@mi-reporter.com

This summer, Mercer Island’s Parks and Recreation Department is home to young professionals who are making play their work. The warm season is the department’s busiest, and many seasonal staff are hired, from lifeguards to camp counselors. Overseeing the activities and programs are college students or recent graduates, many looking for a future in parks and recreation management. They are managing the beaches, running the sports and day camps and

making sure Summer Celebration! and other events run smoothly. “We have hundreds of kids that participate in [summer] activities, as well as hundreds of more park users, and it is important for us to recruit, hire, train and supervise seasonal staff to provide the best experience we can for the participants and the staff,” said Recreation Superintendent Diane Mortenson. The department hires 30 seasonal employees and a number of maintenance staff for the parks, trails and open spaces over the summer months. Assistant Recreation Coordinator Morgan McCarthy is a seasoned veteran of Island summers. She was a counselor in training (CIT) at age 14 and has

McCarthy said she’s been impressed with the creativity of both the kids and counselors. Last week, day campers put on a talent show. This week, Mini Mercer campers are playing “foot golf ” — golf played with a soccer ball. After looking at results from a community survey and recent crime data, Mercer Island’s city staff and Police Department (MIPD) are starting a “Lock It or Lose It” campaign to encourage residents to lock doors and windows before leaving their homes. The MIPD, seeking to reduce the number of residential burglaries on the Island, first wanted to understand the motivators for, and barriers to, this simple behavior. A nine-question, online citizen survey was conducted, and about 600 Islanders responded. The survey results, along with the past five

City briefs New Town Center consultant While keeping urban design consultant Seth Harry on retainer for the continuation of the Town Center visioning work, the city has decided to hire a new community engagement specialist. Karen Reed, a Seattlebased communications professional, is taking time during the visioning hiatus to get caught up on the project and “looking at ways to make the process better,” said Development Services Group (DSG) Director Scott Greenberg. An interim report on the Town Center process will be published on July 31, Greenberg said. The work, which started last year, centered around updating the development code written in 1994 and gathering public input about what the Town Center should look like over the next 20 years.

Island Crest Way roadwork update In the spring, the city began its 2015 Water System Capital Improvement Project to upgrade parts of

the potable water supply. In June, work extended to locations along Island Crest Way (ICW), at times causing traffic impacts. By early September, contractors should be finished with planned ICW work, as well an extra, unplanned component: the addition of 850 feet of water main between S.E. 42nd and S.E. 44th Streets, due to access problems with current deeply-buried piping. Each afternoon, a temporary road patch is placed to allow uninterrupted evening driving. These rougher patches will be replaced with permanent asphalt patches in September. For information regarding this project, contact project manager Rona Lin at 206-275-7806.

Sidewalk, utility work on S.E. 40th The city’s customary summer roadway paving and improvement is underway, and work is currently centered on S.E. 40th Street between Island Crest Way and 78th Avenue S.E., installing new curbs and sidewalks, and storm drainage, prior to late-August repaving.

For more, contact Street Engineer Clint Morris at 206-275-7807.

City earns workplace recycling award For the second year in a row, the city operations of Mercer Island were named to King County’s annual list of workplaces with exemplary waste prevention and recycling programs. Each spring, employers in King County (outside of the City of Seattle) are invited to apply for recognition as a Best Workplace for Waste Prevention and Recycling. The 2015 list spans a wide array of employers, from education to transportation to local government, that have shown exceptional commitment to recycling and reducing the amount of waste their company sends to the landfill.

The three cities are activating their plans as a precautionary measure, and joined together to ensure that the region is ready for a potential water shortage.

“We are asking customers to carefully manage their water use and make sure they are not wasting water,” the release states. Mercer Island communications and sustainability manager Ross Freeman said there will be “no action planned from the city right now,” but he will be retrans-

mitting SPU’s message and echoing their suggested advisory measures in the city’s usual channels. “Of course, if it escalates to ‘voluntary,’ we will push a little harder,” Freeman said. For advisory measures and more information, go to www.seattle.gov/util.

Business briefs Roberto’s is sold, will add delivery An Island mainstay has sold again. Roberto’s was opened in 1974 by Bob Rom and his sister Betty. They owned and operated Roberto’s at its current location until 1988. Kris Robbins, then an employee of original owner Bob Rom’s for nine years, bought the restaurant in 1988. She and her husband John operated the restaurant with occasional help from their daughter Sarah. After 27 years, Kris has passed the baton to Jish and Dolly Nath in the summer of 2015. Roberto’s remains the same hometown pizzeria and pasta house known for serving quality pizza and pasta in a quiet, relaxed atmosphere. It started delivery services on July 1. “We make all our own dough and sauces in house daily from old family recipes and take pride in the quality of our foods. Pizzas are baked in a traditional brick oven and we are known for our Lasagna and fresh salad dressings that we also make in house,” according to the

restaurant's website. To continue the stories and traditions at Roberto's, the new owners are asking customers to bring in old photos to create a timeline on the wall of the restaurant. Roberto’s is located at 7605 S.E. 27th St.

According to a press release, one reason for the poorer ranking a few years ago might be timing. The 2012 survey was done soon after the elimination of the Ride Free Area (in downtown Seattle) and the start of the RapidRide C and D lines. The 2013 survey was done while there was media attention on potential service cuts and on security incidents. More than 70 percent of riders said they had not been directly affected by those service reductions. Twenty-two percent said they were affected but continued riding, and six percent said they had stopped

riding because of the reductions. The 2014 rider survey also asked if service reductions affected the “quality” of service. The percentage of customers who said they were “very satisfied” fell between two and seven percent in the following areas” • • • •

Let the grass go

W

To the editor

e don’t think a lot about not having enough water in Western Washington — we usually have too much. When we see photos of dry lake beds in California, we shrug, secure in the knowledge that abundant water is one more way we are superior to the ‘golden’ state. But this year, along with most of the West, water is in short supply in our state and in the Puget Sound region. As a result, Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) has declared a water advisory for its service areas. Yet looking at the utility’s data regarding its low reservoirs and skinny snowpack, it looks more like an imminent disaster. We are heavily dependent upon the amount of snowpack in the mountains — a natural phenomenon that essentially serves as a mountain-top water storage system. That source, along with a series of reservoirs carefully managed to protect fish, crops and a growing population, is usually more than adequate. But things have changed. The advisory declaration should read: stop watering the grass; do not wash your car in the driveway; hold off on washing dishes or laundry unless absolutely necessary. Showers should be not longer than three minutes, max. Even with these admonishments, the amount of savings achieved by each household must be multiplied by thousands to be effective. Besides Mercer Island, SPU supplies water to approximately 1.3 million people in a dozen- plus communities in King County. In addition to Seattle, those communities include: Bellevue, Redmond, Issaquah, Sammamish and Renton in an area that stretches from the King County boundary at Woodinville to the unincorporated areas to the south and east, to the foothills of the Cascades. What we can learn from California as it urges its residents to take out lawns — is that watering the grass is a waste of money and resources. We say just “let it go,” this year.

‘SPU declares a water advisory why not — conserve now or else?’

The northeast corner was paved and stairs were added. Good for walk-on access. The recycle center was discontinued because it was not cost-effective, it is said. But, didn’t students run the center as civic duty? Were the large tubs no longer useful? Is being green now too costly? For whatever reason it was discontinued, the recycle center space is now a focus of proposed Mercerdale change. And if you look you will see a Bicentennial Park sign, just at the foot of the now barricaded trail that did lead westward up the hill to further access to the park. Perhaps the most onerous sign of change is the declaration by the Mercer Island Center for the Arts (MICA) as its site in Mercerdale park. A done deal. Not a proposal, if you believe the sign. Not without city council preparation, if council request to staff for info to facilitate the deal is understood. But more importantly, not without citizen involvement, it is hoped. Understand, we all would benefit culturally and prestigiously from the many facilities bundled by MICA. But think of the scope of it: practice rooms for piano, mini-halls for chamber music, artists’ studios, a Benaroyastyle food court, an open-air Tinker bell performance with folding chairs on park grass for audience (pave it over), a 300-seat theater that just might be big enough for Swan Lake, but is too big for Mercerdale.

tial. “Best Starts for Kids is how we will transform the way we invest in our next generation, to finally provide the upstream solutions that prevent negative outcomes such as mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence, homelessness, and incarceration,” he continued. The cost to an average homeowner is about $1 each week. “By making the latest research and tools available to every parent and caregiver in our community, we will be able to produce the talented, creative and motivated workforce we need to remain a prosperous region,” Constantine said. The proposed levy rate is 14 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value. Half of the funding would go toward early childhood development—birth through age 5—followed by early intervention as problems such as depression, and chemical dependency occur during teenage years. It would also support community-based programs that are designed to create safe, healthy communities that reinforce a child’s progress. There already are community-based programs in King County that increase the likelihood that a baby is born at a healthy weight and prevent developmental delays from becoming lifelong disabilities. However, access to those programs is limited in part because about 75 percent of the County’s General Fund is used to pay for the justice system, which includes law enforcement, courts, and jails. Best Starts for Kids provides the funds needed to expand access to community-based programs that are proven to deliver positive outcomes or show potential. The long-term goal is to decrease demand for services needed when there is a negative outcome, such as mental illness, substance abuse, domestic violence and homelessness. Best Starts for Kids is based on research by James Heckman, a Nobel Prize-winning economics professor who found that investing earlier in a person’s development—starting with prenatal services— delivers the greatest return. LOCK | FROM 1 years of MIPD report data, indicate that the primary point of entry for residential burglars on Mercer Island is an unlocked door. Almost half of home burglaries annually are at homes where a door or window was left unlocked. Building on past educational initiatives around this risk, the MIPD is developing an outreach campaign to increase the number of residents who “always lock all doors when away from home.” The Island’s burglary rate is comparable to other nearby jurisdictions, but the MIPD believes that with citizens’ help, it can achieve the lowest burglary rate in the region. The city will do a soft launch of the “Lock It or Lose It” campaign at National Night Out on Aug. 4. Contact Police Commander Leslie Burns at 206-275-7900 with questions.

Island thief steals bikes to support drug habit

Katie Metzger/Staff Photo

On June 20, Mercer Island Police caught an alleged bike thief on the bike path in the 9000 block of North Mercer Way. The arrest was made after a phone tip from an Island resident who was at the Mercer Island Community and Event Center picking up her kids. The witness called police to report a suspicious man who was walking by a bike

The fulltime Parks and Recreation employees start planning summer events months ahead of time. “We start in the winter thinking of camp themes and field trips, but we count on the staff to bring everything to life,” Herzog said. Herzog started as an intern, and said the city enjoys having new staff and fresh ideas every summer. Many have backgrounds in recreation management or teaching. Beach Manager Mallory Campbell is a product of the Recreation and Tourism Program at Central

Campbell leads weekly training sessions for lifeguards and guards Luther Burbank four days a week. She said her guards haven’t had to make any saves at Luther Burbank this year, but had three incidents at the beginning of the summer at Groveland. “It was all done really quickly and effectively, and the community that was

LETTER | FROM 5 There needs to be another place for MICA, a place not in the Mercerdale Park. A place not accommodative of piano lessons, yet useful to Mercer Island youth to act and grip. rack multiple times before walking away with two of them. After police made contact with the suspect along the bike path, a juvenile male from the Community Center identified his bike. The police then arrested the 28-year-old Island resident who was “surprisingly, fairly cooperative,” said Detective Sergeant Jeff Magnan. The thief admitted to having more stolen bikes at home and confessed that he pawned bikes off in Bellevue to support a drug

habit. Of the four bikes police recovered on July 20, all but one were identified. The fourth, police suspect, was stolen out of the city of Bellevue, but they have not found any record of the missing bike. After the arrest, the suspect was processed, released and has since been cited into court. Magnan strongly advises residents to secure bikes with a good lock and to make note of the bike's serial number in case it needs to be identified.

seen since the bicentennial-year celebration. My only comment is that our own Summer Celebration Band - now so popular - should never be placed at the end of the parade. I also want to thank George Trusk for the loan of his wheelchair and Judy Oliver who pushed me along as I played cymbals for the band. These 98 years and 9 months-old legs are not up to marching anymore, and these wonderful people have made sure I have not missed a performance since I started this band many years ago.

We owe a big thanks to Dave Menz and the 49 community members, both students and adults, who marched in the Summer Celebration! Grand Parade on July 11. The crowd was treated to a special performance this year when several band members stopped en route to sing and dance along to the song, “Celebration.” The parade committee also needs to be complimented. Beach Club third, Country Club fourth at Midlakes Former longtime champion Shore Club places eighth at final meet By Joseph Livarchik

jlivarchik@mi-reporter.com

For the third-straight year, the Newport Hills Swim and Tennis Club are Midlakes league champs. Newport Hills bested runner-up Edgebrook with a combined team score of 1649.5 to take the top spot at the Midlakes Tournament Championships Sunday, July 26 at King County Aquatic Center in Federal

Way. The Mercer Island Beach Club finished a few points ahead of the Mercer Island Country Club, scoring 1092 to the Country Club’s 1086.5 to place third, while former longtime champs Mercerwood Shore Club placed eighth overall at 892.5. Ellie Williams won two events for the Beach Club girls, winning the 15-andover 100 IM (1:01.71) and 500 free (5:11.01). Alexandra Williams won the girls 13-14 50 free (25.24), and the Beach Club had winners in the 11-12 200 free and 200 medley relays, with the group of Julia Williamson, Kaitlyn

Williamson, Grace Olsen and Celia Steinhauer taking the 200 free relay in 1:50.19 and the 200 medley relay in 2:03.22. Maeve Murdoch won two events for the Country Club girls, winning the 15-andover 100 free (53.94) and the 50 yard fly (27.06). Leah Fisk set a Midlakes tournament record in the 15-andolder 200 free with a winning time of 1:53.24, while Chloe Mark won the 13-14 girls 200 free in 2:03.42. The Country Club won the 13-14 200 medley relay behind the group of Chloe Mark, Kate Hamilton,

Rockers win ‘B’ division, head to postseason tournament By Joseph Livarchik

Above, Lee Hochberg swings for a hit against Seattle in May. Hochberg hit .806 at the plate this season with four home runs.

Although the year didn’t quite begin as well as team members had hoped, the Mercer Island Rockers managed to wrap their regular season with a three-game winning streak, thumping Seattle 27-8 in their finale last Tuesday, July 21 at Leo Lassen Field in Seattle. The Rockers finished 9-2 in league play to win the ‘B’ division, the lower division of the coed softball league, which Mercer Island qualified for after a rough stretch in the seeding round

to begin the season. Still, the 9-2 mark was secondbest to only Maple Valley, the team Mercer Island lost to in last year’s tournament championship. “The seeding round was frustrating because I don’t think we’re a Division II team,” Rocker head coach Alan Anderson said. “The main problem from my standpoint was because we had so many players, every game was almost a different lineup, so there was inconsistency on defense. On offense, we didn’t have a set 1-2-3-4 lineup because of different players being gone

for vacation and those sorts of things. One thing I’m hoping to see at the tournament is if we put our 11 or 13 best players out there, I think we can play with Maple Valley. I think we’re a very good team if we have everybody there, but I won’t know until end of the tournament.” Offense wasn’t hard to come by for the Rockers this season, with Anderson calling his team “an offensive juggernaut.” The Rockers batted a whopping .759 as a team in their finale against Seattle. Terry Graham led the way, going 5-5 at the

plate with a triple, while three other batters were a perfect 4-4. For the season, the Rockers hit for a combined team average of .646, scoring 172 runs to lead the league. Ken Krekow led Mercer Island, going 16-17 at the plate for a .941 batting average. Larry Ransom and Lee Hochberg each remained above .800, with Ransom hitting .813 and Hochberg .806 with four home runs. Mercer Island’s women were equally impressive, with Graham batting .786

In the boys competition, Mercerwood Shore Club’s Matthew Williamson won two events, placing first in

the 9-10 50 back (34.82) and the 9-10 25 yard fly (14.31). Beach Club competitors Nate Robinson and Jacob Headrick each won two events. and Jackie Roberts boasting a .696 at the plate. From the mound, Mercer Island allowed the second-lowest number of opposing runs scored in their league behind the efforts of longtime pitcher John Weinberg and fellow hurler Gary Wiberg. Mercer Island’s two losses came against Kent and Sumner, and Anderson expects to face a pool of teams that includes Kent, Bellevue and Maple Valley’s second coed team in the tournament. Each of those opponents beat Mercer Island at some point during the season, either during conference play or the seeding round. But Mercer Island’s coach hopes whatever early season struggles his team has faced have since been shaken off. “It’s a situation where in the past, all these teams have beaten us, but we
