School levy heads to April ballot

VOL. 20, NO. 20

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS

By Megan Hansen Co-Editor

The Coupeville School Board is slated to pass a resolution this week to put a $5-million capital facilities levy on the ballot in the spring. Due to early holiday press deadlines, The Examiner went to press prior to the meeting. The proposed levy will collect $5 million in property tax revenue over three years, starting in 2016. The levy increase will cost a homeowner with a $200,000 home about $180 more a year in property taxes, according to the school district. A special election will be held Tuesday, April 28. The original discussion by the school board targeted a February special election, but Superintendent Jim Shank said they didn’t feel like their would be enough time to effectively pass the levy. The school district’s plan is to break projects up into three phases and pay for the construction as taxes are collected, Shank said. The first phase will include remodeling the elementary school restroom, repairing a wall, SEE LEVY, PAGE 7

Since they formed in 2009 and started organizing an annual work day to help homeowners in need of a hand, Graves has called on them at least three times. The volunteer group has helped Graves with electrical work, shower-head installation and even cleaning moss from the roof of her Admiral’s Cove home. “I can’t do that,” said Graves. “I’m afraid of heights. Pat Lamont says the chickens abandoned near State Highway 20 outside Coupeville are adjusting well to life on her farm outside Oak Harbor. She took part in the chicken rescue last week after they spent three weeks near the highway.

Friends round up stray chickens By Ron Newberry Staff reporter

Shari Bibich was driving along State Highway 20 on her way to Oak Harbor last week when she noticed a brood of chickens on the side of the road and hoped they wouldn’t cross the street. When she returned to Coupeville, it was obvious they tried and one didn’t make it. “It broke my heart,” Bibich said. Bibich, shelter manager at Whidbey Animals’ Improvement Foundation in Coupeville, told the story to two Oak Harbor volunteers who were at the shelter and they put a plan into action to save the remaining birds from a similar fate. Pat Lamont and Pam Fick first rounded up their husbands, then rounded up the abandoned chickens. The rescue took place over two consecutive days and included Curt Fick scaling a tree in complete darkness, then snatching the chickens with a fishing net 15 feet off the ground. Pat Lamont and Pam Fick had succeeded just before dark the previous afternoon

in netting one chicken on the ground only to watch the rest scatter near the highway. “After that, they became very skittish,” Pat Lamont said. A longtime chicken raiser, she then hatched a better plan. “Since I had chickens, I knew at night that chickens roost and when they go to sleep you can pick them up and they don’t move,” Lamont said. The group spotted the madrona tree in which the chickens were roosting on the west side of Highway 20. Armed with a net and flashlight, Curt Fick volunteered to climb the tree while his wife and Pat and T.J. Lamont watched from below.

Fick’s first swipe at a chicken was unsuccessful. Sort of. “It fell like a sack of potatoes to the ground,” Pat Lamont said. “We thought we killed it, but we hadn’t.” It remained sound asleep, she said, until it was placed in a dog kennel in the back of a truck. The capture of the remaining three went more smoothly, increasing the Lamonts’ brood to 14 chickens in their pen. Bibich was glad to see a happy ending for the four chickens, who were the talk of the town in Coupeville in recent weeks because SEE CHICKENS. PAGE 7

Yarn shop focuses on sustainable practices By Kelly Pantoleon News clerk

Dena Royal said she has eight to 10 people a week come into her store asking to copy documents. Royal owns a yarn shop. “It used to be a copy shop,” Royal said. Royal opened Whidbey Isle Yarns, Gifts and Teas at 302 N. Main St. in Coupeville on Labor Day of this year. Before moving into this location, Royal’s business was located in downtown Oak Harbor. She had to move because she was living in her store. “I’m the lawbreaking knitter,” Royal joked. And before Royal moved into her current location, Coupeville Yarns had recently moved out of the same building a couple doors down. Royal said her focus is on the community and part of that is using sustainable practices. “It’s just really important to me (to be sustainable),” Royal said. Royal hand-dyes much of her fabric that she sells in the store. And the fiber she chooses to hand-dye all comes from the United States, so she’s able to vet the origin. Royal also uses fiber from local farms and goes directly to them to purchase it. She said she’s been doing fiber arts since her son and daughter were in an Alpaca 4-H group about 10 years ago. Her passion for sustainability was sparked when she found out she had auto-immune arthritis 15 years ago.

Royal said that got her started thinking about chemicals that are put into products people use every day. Part of her sustainability mission is that she ensures no dye goes down the drain. Royal said it took her about five years to hone the technique. She uses just the right amount of powdered dye, fiber and water and leaves the fiber in the crockpot the precise amount required to absorb all the dye. The water in the crockpots she uses to dye looks as clear as it did before they contained any dye. Another part of the dying process is the fiber Royal uses. She only uses proteinbased fibers, which come from animals, not plantbased fibers like from cotton or bamboo, because they don’t soak up all the dye like the protein-based fiber from silkworms and alpacas and other animals do. It’s no surprise she’s got her process so finely tuned — it’s her favorite technique. “I could be in the dye studio 24/7,” Royal said. “I love color.” Another way Royal strives to be sustainable is by teaching others to do the same. Royal shows younger generations how to make small projects by hand. When they’re making something, Royal said, “not only are they using handstitching, but it gets them thinking about recycling.” She said the fiber art gets kids thinking creatively. “Even the scraps they cut off are put in stuffed animals,” Royal said. “Nothing is wasted.” And many times when

Struthers sells her work at Royal’s store. customers purchase fabric from Royal, they get a free original pattern to use. But, again, in an effort to not be wasteful, Royal texts or emails the pattern to them instead of printing out a piece of paper. While Royal owns the shop on her own, she does have some fiber artists who sell their work at her store on consignment. Kathleen Dodge-DeHaven makes needle-felted pin cushions by taking a barbed needle and poking wool with it to create a soft felt material. Stephanie Struthers uses Royal’s hand-dyed rovings, bundles of fiber, to create small dolls. And Royal keeps it local — all the artists who sell in her store live in Coupeville. Royal and the artists who sell in her store also teach

classes for people who want to learn techniques like knitting, hand-dying, needle-felting and more. Royal and her customers also use fabric that Royal makes from recycled sweaters. She said she buys cheap sweaters from thrift stores, shrinks them, dyes them and then makes products like whimsical animals and “heartwarmers,” which are like hand warmers in the shape of hearts that Royal fills with rice or organic lavender. For the fiber artists who sell their work in Whidbey Isle, Royal said her only rule is that they use rovings that she has made. “I get a lot of joy out of that, when my customers come back and show me what they make with my hand-

dyed yarns,” she said. In addition to her rovings, Royal sells scarves, cowls, mittens, beads, buttons and other products in her shop. In fact, her button collection, which she calls the “button bar,” is the largest in the Pacific Northwest at about a quarter-million buttons. Royal also said she makes everything by hand. “I must have been amish in a former life,” she joked. But Royal said that while many people think hobbies like crocheting and knitting are only for older people, “there’s a whole genre of young knitters.” For people who don’t knit or crochet, Royal does custom orders. She also has a line called “Triad yarns,” where people can pick out three different colors and Royal will make a custom skein for the customer to use. Despite her many projects, Royal said community involvement remains her top priority. She said that the interac-

tion with people is something that online shops can’t provide. So while people may be able to buy cheaper products online, local yarn shops, or “LYS,” as Royal calls them, are more involved. “You won’t get that oneon-one attention (online),” she said. For Royal, being a part of the community includes letting the library knitting class use her shop for free when the library isn’t available, teaching for free at the local schools, donating to the local Boys & Girls Club and giving discounts to knitting groups that knit for charities. “I’m not doing this to get rich,” she said. “I try to do really good with the customers.” A list of classes and times can be found at her website, www.whidbeyyarns.net

Leadership is changing hands at Island Transit By Jessie Stensland Co-Editor

The leadership of Island Transit will look very different in the new year. The majority of board members have been replaced and will be working with a new interim director. The new group of leaders has a lot on their plate in the coming year as the agency struggles to rebuild its finances, restore routes, negotiate to continue bus connector services to other counties and deal with the possible unionization of drivers and dispatchers. Kenneth Graska, the interim director, attended his

commissioners voted this week to replace her on the board. Island County’s newest commissioner, Rick Hannold, attended the meeting Friday as former commissioner Aubrey Vaughan’s replacement. Commissioner Jill Johnson will step into Price Johnson’s seat next month. Johnson said the decision to replace Price Johnson was in response to public feedback. “There’s an overwhelming desire from the public to see change in leadership on the board,” she said. Price Johnson was named as an alternate in case either commissioner can’t attend.

first board meeting Friday morning. He will replace Coupeville Councilman Bob Clay, who, as chairman of the IT board, was the acting director for the last few months. Graska said he’s spent his first five days on the job meeting the employees, and he’s impressed. “You have the most committed, cohesive group of transit professionals I have come across,” he said. It was the final meeting as transit board members for both Island County Commissioner Helen Price Johnson and Oak Harbor Mayor Scott Dudley. Price Johnson’s fellow

She said Friday that she understood the decision wasn’t personal or punitive, but that “elections have consequences.” Hannold won the election in November; he and Johnson are both Republicans. Price Johnson said she would like to continue helping the transit agency. She pointed out that the new board won’t have any representation from unincorporated South Whidbey or Camano Island. The Oak Harbor Council voted this month to replace Dudley with Councilman Rick Almberg in the new year. Some of the council mem-

bers criticized him for going to Coupeville and Langley to ask other councils to change their representation of the transit board. Langley Councilman Jim Sundberg said he expects to continue on the board in 2015. Clay didn’t address the issue. The board approved the agency’s $12 million budget for 2015. The budget shows a $60,000 increase in working capitals. Clay gave his final debriefing as acting CEO. He said the agency’s drivers and dispatchers are working toward becoming unionized, but it’s still very

preliminary. He and Price Johnson discussed plans to bring back an important South Whidbey route in April. They both also talked about the discussions that regional transit leaders and state lawmakers have had over the connector services. State funding of the connector between Camano Island and Everett ran out this year; the funding for the route between Whidbey and Skagit ends this summer. “I’m bound and determined to find some way to provide some level of service at least between Oak Harbor and Mount Vernon,” Clay said.

Fees for county services changing for 2015 By Janis Reid Staff Reporter

Fees for Island County Public Health services like septic inspections and waterquality testing jumped by 8 percent as part of a comprehensive fee schedule change. Other than fees related to food service, public health fees haven’t been increased since 2006, according to Keith Higman, Island County public health director. The 8 percent increase in environmental services was accounted for in the 2015 budget and approved by the Island County Board of Health. Public Health struggled in recent years as service costs increase and fees stay static, Higman said. The 8 percent increase will bring an additional $50,000 to Higman’s 2015 budget. The county issues approximately 200 septic permits each year, but this can vary widely depending on how the building market is perform-

ing. In addition, state and federal grants, which comprise 45 percent of his budget, can be “volatile” and unpredictable. In the short term, Island County commissioners agreed to assist public health to maintain current services by paying the difference out of general fund dollars. For 2015, the amount is $490,000. Higman is advocating for some type of dedicated funding source for public health moving forward. In addition to the Board of Health’s increase in service fees, Island County commissioners adopted a new fee schedule Monday that primarily impacts the planning department, but also lists some public health and public works services where the re-

quirements overlap. These fees include those for building inspections, building permits and design reviews. “Some fees are going up, some are going down and we’ve eliminated some that were simply redundant,” said Planning Director David Wechner, who added that fees are updated on a threeyear cycle. Among the main changes are the inclusion of a $300 pre-application fee, which would be applied to any permit fees if approved, he said. Commissioner Rick Hannold expressed concern about how the fee changes will impact consumers. Wechner estimates that the county will capture $44,965 in additional revenue annually to cover the cost of services and that planning

takes in roughly $500,000 in fees each year. Hannold said he is satisfied that the increase is “actually keeping up with inflation.” “What I think this does is better align the revenue capture to the work that’s being done,” said Commissioner Helen Price Johnson. “What you’ve done is take an in-depth look and I appreciate that. What we need to be doing is charging for the cost and not charging for the things that are duplicate.” Price Johnson said she appreciates outreach conducted by Wechner with the

local building community to ensure the permitting fees are fair. “They were supportive of the fee schedule as amended,” Wechner said. Commissioner Jill Johnson said she would support the updated fee schedule both because it keeps up with inflation and because there was a reduction of fees that should not have been in place. However, now that there is an overall increase in fees, Johnson said she expects service levels to increase as well. “That expectation is there is a correlation … more costs equals the right level of ser-

Rescue wrapping and other ideas Americans throw away 25 percent more waste between Thanksgiving and New Year’s than in any other season. It amounts to about 1 million extra tons per week. Think about those holiday parties, the paper plates and cups, plastic utensils, wrapping paper, Styrofoam stuffing, plastic packaging, ribbons, decorations, the food waste and the tree! Everyone knows the three R’s: Maribeth Crandell Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Most peoGuest column ple focus on recycling. Recycling is pretty easy. It makes us all feel good inside. In Island County we can take our recyclables to the recycle centers at Bayview, Freeland, Coupeville and Oak Harbor Road Recycle Centers. Curbside recycling is available in the City of Oak Harbor, the Town of Coupeville and on Camano Island for those with regular garbage pick-up. Look carefully at the signs on the recycle bins to make sure you know what can be recycled and what cannot. What may be accepted in one town may not be accepted in another. It depends on the company that handles the waste. So please don’t contaminate good recyclable material with stuff that can’t be recycled here. Glass is not accepted in the City of Oak Harbor or in the Town of Coupeville recycle bins; however, there are places in Oak Harbor to deposit glass: Office Max, Albertson’s, the Marina, NAS Whidbey and Oak Harbor Recycle Parks, along with the County facilities. Wrapping paper can be recycled but foil paper, ribbons, bows, used paper plates and cups and Styrofoam packing cannot. The UPS Store and Pony Express in Oak Harbor and the Lavender Wind Farm in Coupeville can re-use Styrofoam peanuts. Reuse is where people can become even more angelic. Take some of those natural resources that were just used once and give them another chance at life. Think of it as rescue wrapping. If every family reused just two feet of holiday ribbon, the 38,000 miles of ribbon saved could tie a bow around the entire planet. If each family wrapped three presents in reused materials, it would save enough paper to cover 45,000 football fields. By reusing holiday wrapping and decorations, you save not only the original resources but all the energy it took to make that tree into wrapping paper, or that oil into plastic stuff. My mother used to press used wrapping paper under the couch cushions so it was flat and handy all year round. Reduce is the most challenging. It takes forethought, which, I’m told, separates us from other animals. When you’re tempted to collect more stuff, think about it before you bring it home. Many of us have realized that we’re happier with less stuff. I love giving presents and supporting the local economy, but I often choose gifts of experience. If you get a few gifts that you really don’t care to keep, our Island thrift shops may be a good place to donate them. You can dispose of electronics responsibly at the Coupeville Solid Waste Complex. Computer towers, laptops, monitors, eReaders, TVs portable DVD players that have a screen will all be accepted for free at the Recycling Center. Other electronics may be accepted by BARC, just inside the gate, for a nominal fee that benefits the Whidbey Animal Improvement Foundation. n Maribeth Crandell is a WSU Waste Wise volunteer.

Sale is a Christmas tragedy for town Editor, Mayor Nancy Conard has made a deal to sell a restricted easement on 54 aces on Keystone Hill — already protected by the town of Coupeville. This “forever” easement sold to the Navy will allow them to fly the Growlers jets over it, dooming the use of Rhododendrum Park, the dog park, and homes that will be unsellable on Keystone Hill and in the surrounding area. This decision was made by people who do not represent people outside the boundary of the town, as we cannot vote in Coupeville elections. We have a right to be angry about this. The Navy wants electromagnetic emitter trucks in the Olympic National Forest instead of Idaho and will spend $11.5 million to move to Washington; they want more nuclear subs in the Hood Canal; they have expanded their Northwest Training and Testing Center and the National Resource Defense Council has sued them to protect the number of fish and mammals that they will harm. This includes our beloved orcas. They are expanding the number of jets in a squadron and are expanding the number of Growlers at

NASWI that will use OLF Coupeville. COER sued the Navy to do the first EIS ever on the transition of aircraft at OLF Coupeville. And, recently, Congress just provided money for 47 more Growlers, which have a one-site location — Oak Harbor. The Navy’s plans for Puget Sound are to expand their use of our lands, sea and airspace so that 60 percent of their assets will be on the west coast by 2020. Washington already ranks sixth among the 50 states for having military personnel and assets in Washington — and most of that is west of the Mountains. Unlik Port Townsend and towns along the coast and the Hood Canal and on the San Juans — who are fighting the Navy’s attempt to encroach on their lives and businesses and peaceful environment – Mayor Nancy and the Town Council have rolled out the red carpet and taken the Navy’s money. How does this impact all of us? At the “State of Coupeville” report, Mayor Nancy reported that B&B taxes and retail receipts were key to a sustainable Coupeville. Well, those numbers are down and they will continue to go down as people decide not to come to Coupeville because of the jets. Business owners will go elsewhere because of the jets. People with children, young farmers, teachers and

doctors will go elsewhere … and the exodus has already begun. Mayor Nancy and the Town Council have doomed the future sustainability of Coupeville for a terrible short-term gain. The Navy has a written strategy about how to work with land trusts and towns to get what they want. The intention of the original grant was to preserve the watershed of Crockett Lake and as a potential water supply for Coupeville. The town could have put restrictions on this land — without selling out to the Navy. A harsh grinch gift to our community’s future.

MARK It’s not Christmas without cacti OBITUARY THE DATE toni grove sowin ’n’ the trowel Last week I got real excited. And it wasn’t because an ice-cream truck overturned in front of my house. No, it was because one of my three Christmas cacti had buds on it. Okay, there was actually only one bud, but one bud is better than no buds. And that’s the way it usually goes with me and Christmas cacti. What’s more, the bud actually turned into a flower instead of immediately abandoning ship and dropping to the floor unborn. I know plenty of people whose Christmas cacti bloom dependably every winter with no bother and less work. Sadly, I’m not one of those people. Even if I buy one that’s covered with blooms, I can be pretty sure

that will be the last time I’ll see that ever happening again. While gazing upon my sad and budless cacti, I decided it was time to do some research and figure out what I’ve been doing wrong all these years. And it has been years. One of my plants belonged to my mother, who died over two decades ago. Yes, two decades of my mom looking down from Heaven knowing I’m a nitwit. The first thing I discovered was a Christmas cactus isn’t a cactus at all. It, along with the other holiday cacti – Thanksgiving and Easter – is an epiphyte from South America. In the wild, these plants are found high up in nooks and crannies of trees, just like bromeliads, orchids, air plants and some ferns. I also found out that what I often assume is a Christmas cactus usually isn’t. In practice, what we buy around Christmas time are more often than not Thanksgiving cacti that have been forced into

Christmastime bloom. Sure, it will bloom now, but next year look for it to bloom around Thanksgiving. How can you tell what you’ve got at home? A Thanksgiving cactus (Schlumbergera truncata) will have two to four sawtoothed-shaped serrations on each stem segment, or what’s more properly called a phyllocladis. A Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera bridgesii) lacks these serrations and has more rounded edges. Easter cacti (Rhipsalidopsis gaertneri) have little spines or hairs at the end of their stem sections. And each blooms around the holiday they’re named for. So what can go wrong that would keep them from blooming? Unlike a true cactus, they aren’t meant to go completely without water for long stretches. Water and fertilize them regularly, but let the top inch or so of soil dry out between waterings. And don’t let them get waterlogged. You can place the pot on a tray of wet stones to keep the humid-

ity up. They need even temperatures in the winter, around 68 degrees. Don’t put them by an outside door. Severe temperature fluctuations can cause the buds to drop, and warm temperatures will keep buds from forming. The amount of light is the biggest factor. You can keep them in a sunny window in the winter, but they require 14 hours or more of dark every night for about six weeks to set buds. That means starting sometime in September they shouldn’t be in any room where the light is turned on after sundown. As little as two hours of artificial light during the night can keep them from setting buds. On the other hand, if you keep them at colder, not freezing, temperatures – from 50 to 59 degrees – they may still set buds despite shorter nights, but their growth may be stunted and they may experience bud drop. So now that I know how to do it right, I better get at it before another 20 years without flowers go by.

This all-island alumni tournament primarily features teams from Coupeville, divided up by graduating years. Organizer Noah Roehl said they would like to encourage more Oak Harbor and South Whidbey graduates to take part. It is preferred that at least half of team is composed of Whidbey graduates. “We are not opposed to teams from off Whidbey Island participating if they have a strong connection to the event, foundation or community,” the tournament website says. “In the end, our goal is not to see which team can find the most ex-NBA–type players to win the tournament. We would like this event to be an opportunity to play with family and friends and see old classmates.” Each team is guaran-

teed three games. The Classic will be divided into two divisions, open and senior (40+). Open teams are asked to pay a $125 donation to the Tom Roehl Foundation. Many options available for holiday tree recycling By Ron Newberry Staff Reporter

Not sure what to do with your Christmas tree after the holidays? Whidbey Island residents will have plenty of free and inexpensive options, ranging from home pickups to dropoffs at recycling centers. Island County is accepting Christmas trees free of charge at all of its Whidbey

Island solid waste locations until the end of January. “The trees have to be free of all ornamentation, including tinsil, and we do not accept flocked trees. They have to go in the garbage,” said Gene Clark, recycle and hazardous waste coordinator for Island County. Island Disposal, which offers curbside pickup service throughout the island, will pick up Christmas trees next

to the trash can on normal pickup days, but they must be chopped in 3-foot increments, said Tiffani Vlazek, customer service representative. Vlazek said the trees will be billed as an extra with the charge of $3.77 for every 3-foot section. She said there is no date set for when tree pickups will end. “Until there’s no more Christmas trees.” Various groups also are

offering to pick up trees at residences for a donation. Coupeville Boy Scout Troop 4058 will pick up trees Dec. 27 and Jan. 3 within the Coupeville town limits and in Admiral’s Cove. To schedule a pickup, contact Angi Carlson at 360-6321750 or angi@whidbey.net. Another group, the Chaoyang, China, orphanage team, is offering home pickups Jan. 3 from Coupe-

ville to North Whidbey with residents not needing to be present. To schedule a pickup with that group, call Toni Crebbin at 360-672-5449 (leave name, address and phone number) or send an email to crebbintoni@gmail.com. The suggested donation is $10 and the deadline to arrange a pickup is Jan. 1. Meerkerk Gardens in Greenbank also will accept

Christmas trees for recycling for a donation from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 1-15. The mulch will be used in the gardens. Those interested in taking their trees to Meerkerk Gardens are asked to drop them off by the chip pile in the visiting parking lot and place their donation in the green self-pay entrance fee box. They ask that no trees with tinsel or flocked trees be dropped off.

Levy: Projects will be in phases From page 1

the middle school heating and ventilation system, replacing the track, replacing gym bleachers and adding additional bleachers at the football field. Construction would start in the spring of 2016; however, much of the first phase will be conducted in the summer when school is out. Some of the projects would require cutting holes in the roof and could be disruptive if school were in session. Shank said the district is already working on getting permits in place so if the levy passes, the district can ensure it stays on schedule. One obstacle the district is dealing with is a deadline on plans for Engle Field. If the district doesn’t have the ball rolling by this spring, it will have to start over on the project. The Engle Field plan was adopted 10 years ago in conjunction with construction of the high school. Due to the economy and other costs, the district ran out of money to complete the project. Even though construction wouldn’t start until 2016, Shank said the plans should still be good. “We’ve been in communication with people,” Shank said. “I think we’re going to be OK. We’re as confident as we can be from this side.”

The district has also built some contingencies into the levy to ensure it doesn’t run out of funds before completing all the projects. Phase two would occur in 2017 and would include replacing the middle school roof and floors, replacing the elementary school heating and ventilation system, completing Engle Field, replacing track equipment and resurfacing the tennis court. Phase three, to be completed in 2018, includes one of the largest expenditures with an addition at the elementary school estimating to cost $1 million. The second largest expenditure is replacing the track in phase one at an estimated cost of $727,000. Shank said most of the estimated costs are based on hard estimates and the addition includes anticipated engineering services. The third phase also includes sound and lighting in the performing arts center, replacing middle school windows and creating restroom and concessions at the athletic fields. “We’re excited to move forward,” Shank said. “These are projects that need to be done. We appreciate all the support from the community on getting these things done.”

Lenita Graves, holding her dog Haley, is appreciative of the efforts put in by Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers workers at her Admirals Cove home.

Hammers: Nonprofit is accepting applications until Jan. 31 From page 1 Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers is preparing for its 2015 work day, which will take place May 2, and is looking for projects around Central Whidbey. The group is made up of skilled craftsmen and other helpers who are looking to make a difference in their community. Any homeowner may apply, however, the purpose of the organization is to help those who have trouble doing the work themselves or can’t afford to pay for it. The nonprofit group is accepting applications through Jan. 31. “Basically, these are people who are homeowners who, for whatever reason, have work that needs to be done on their home or prop-

erty that they just aren’t able to do,” said Wilson Binger, the nonprofit’s board president. “Sometimes, it’s financial reasons. Sometimes, it’s physical reasons. But they just can’t get the work done.” Hearts & Hammers is long established in South Whidbey but branched out to form a separate group in Central Whidbey five years ago. Binger said they are exploring whether to form a group in North Whidbey to focus on Oak Harbor projects and are looking for candidates interested in spearheading that group. Central Whidbey Hearts & Hammers, whose motto is “Neighbors helping neighbors,” tackles about 20 projects during the designated

work day in an area that basically encompasses the Coupeville School District. Projects include painting, roof repair, de-mossing roofs, replacing windows, flooring and decking, gardening, trash cleanup and cleaning out gutters, among other tasks. The group is holding a fundraiser dinner from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at the Coupeville Rec Hall to help cover materials for projects. Coupeville hoop teams find wins on Orcas By Jim Waller Staff Reporter

A ferry trip to Orcas Island provided just what the Coupeville High School basketball teams needed -- wins. Both the Wolves boys and girls teams were coming off disappointing losses, and wins over the Vikings Friday, Dec. 19, helped erase some of the sting. The Coupeville boys, who lost on a last-second shot in their previous game, ripped Orcas 69-40. The girls, who managed only 19 points their last time out, won 59-49 . Next week, the girls host Vashon Island at 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 29; and the boys travel to Concrete at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30. Both teams play at La Conner Friday, Jan. 2. The girls play first at 6 p.m. and the boys follow at 7:30.

The Wolves jumped off to a good start and finished strong in their resounding win. Coupeville raced to a 21-9 first-quarter lead and led 3825 at the break. The third quarter has been a problem period for Coupeville this year, but not this time. The Wolves upped their cushion to 55-36 heading into the final quarter, where they outscored the host club 14-4. “We played well from the beginning,” coach Anthony Smith said. “We had a good third quarter and put them away early in the fourth.” Smith noted that the margin of victory could have

been wider, but the final few minutes were played with a running clock because Coupeville had a ferry to catch. The Wolves’ defense gave Orcas Island fits, Smith said. “We frustrated them into a lot of turnovers,” he said. “We really got after it. We have been working on different defenses; that is our staple. We came out in the second half with a press and got good results.” The win helped overcome some of the negative vibes from a slow start, Smith said. Coupeville entered the game with a 1-5 record. “It was a good win,” he said. “Winning cures a lot of things.” Wiley Hesselgrave sat most of the second and third quarters with four fouls but still led Coupeville with 17 points; he also had six rebounds and four steals. Aaron Trumbull had 16 points, two rebounds and two steals. Ryan Griggs added 12 points, three rebounds and two blocks. Risen Johnson recorded a strong all-around game with five points, four rebounds, four steals and five assists. Aaron Curtin had four points and six rebounds, while Joel Walstad finished with four points and three rebounds. C.J. Smith scored six points, Matt Shank three and Gabe Wynn one. Not only did the boys varsity win, but Coupeville swept the day with wins from the boys junior varsity team and both girls teams. “It was a party bus on the way home,” Smith said.

Kacie Kiel (20) and her Coupeville teammates put up a strong defensive effort against Friday Harbor last week, but the Wolves’ offense struggled in the 24-19 loss.

Coupeville girls 59, Orcas Island 49 After scoring a season low 19 points in its previous game, Coupeville erupted for a season high in its 59-49 win . The Wolves exploited the Vikings’ gimmicky defense to pull out the win. Orcas

Island ran a diamond-andone, matching up on Coupeville’s leading scorer, Makana Stone. Stone still stung the Vikings for 22 points to lead the Coupeville charge. The Wolves piled up 17 points in the first quarter, six by Stone, for an eight-point lead. Midway through the second period the gap grew

to double digits, but the Vikings wouldn’t go away. The margin remained between eight and 12 the rest of the way as Hannah BrunnerGaydos kept the Vikings in the game. She scored 22 of her game high 33 points in the second half to keep the Vikings within striking distance.

The Wolves had leads of 31-23 and 45-35 after the second and third quarters. While the Wolves scored a season-high 59 points and grabbed the win, they were far from perfect. Coupeville committed 25 turnovers, ran into foul trouble early and lacked patience on offense, according to coach David King. The Vikings took advantage of the Coupeville fouls and hit 12 of 15 free throws in the game. Post players Hailey Hammer and Julia Myers missed large chunks of the game because of fouls, forcing the Wolves to play much of the game down two starters. Hammer fouled out with more than 5 minutes left in the game; Myers exited with 1:58 left. King was not happy with the defensive execution: “We are playing sloppy and not anywhere near our potential. We are trying to make a spectacular play instead of the hard-nosed defense that makes us successful.” He was, however, pleased with the effort: “It wasn’t a clean or pretty game at times, but we kept fighting, and players stepped up either knocking down a shot when needed or making a defensive stop when needed. “This team does a great job of picking each other up and staying positive during the games. No matter the score or situation, they are fighting for every loose ball and looking to get the ball to an open teammate.” Stone wasn’t the only offensive standout. Myers “played really well,” King said, finishing with 11 points, three rebounds and three blocks. Wynter Thorne “had her best offensive game,” King said, chipping in with nine points and four rebounds. Kacie Kiel scored eight points and registered seven of Coupeville’s 15 assists. Hammer had four points and seven rebounds, and Mia Littlejohn scored three points. Stone added four assists and two blocks to her 22-point night. Littlejohn showed “flashes of what she can bring to this team, especially as a point guard,” King said. “She is able to penetrate into the key, and she has a good runner she can make. She has good court vision on these drives and is able to see an open teammate and make the correct pass.”

Peek’s winning ticket was pocketed at Christopher’s on Whidbey and earned Peek $1,000 delivered in a stack of $2 bills. The association gave out roughly 23,000 tickets this year, which equates to $460,000 spent at Red Ticket participating businesses. An estimated $60,000 more than last year. A red ticket is given out for every $20 spent. An estimated onethird of red tickets earned are waived, said Vickie Chambers, association executive director. It also doesn’t account for purchased made that are less than $20 this holiday season. In addition to the $1,000 prize, three $100 prizes were also awarded. Those tickets were given out at Toby’s Tavern, Aqua Gifts and Mosquito Fleet Chili.
