ROUNDUP CONTINUED FROM A21

Mercer Island went on to win the 2014 State Championship. The duo from Bainbridge bounced back in the third/sixth place match and beat Lakeside 7-6 (2), 6-4 to finish third. The third-place finish in boys doubles gave the team a fifth-place boys finish overall at the tournament. “Senior Curtis completes his season with 22 wins and three losses, bringing his high school career record to a combined 65 wins against 20 losses in both singles and doubles,” explained Anderson. “Keet is tied [for the] second overall [best record] in career boys victories at Bainbridge High School.”

levels, from young adults or middle aged players just learning the game to accomplished young competitors and skilled octogenarians who have been playing all their lives, Bainbridge Community Tennis Association tries to provide programming to fit most players’ needs. The nonprofit’s summer agenda is to engage adults in recreational tennis play, building community along the

way. BCTA runs New and Returning Player free clinics on Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings throughout the month of July as a way to reach people wanting to learn to play or wishing to pick up the game where they left it off. All you need to join in is a pair of courtstyle shoes. BCTA also provides doubles play for its 100plus members on Tuesday and Thursday evenings

and Saturday mornings, offering both social and competitive programs for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Details of these programs are available at www. bainbridgecta.com, where interested parents may also find descriptions of BCTA’s junior programs. Adult doubles is held at the Bainbridge High School tennis courts. An on-site BCTA program coordinator organizes play. Participants sign

BYS presents annual Fun Run Registration for the 35th Annual Bainbridge Youth Services Fun Run is off and running at www. bifunrun.com. Organizers say the family-friendly Bainbridge Island tradition is a great way to kick off the Fourth of July celebration. The event begins in downtown Winslow and includes the 1 Mile Run/ Walk at 9 a.m.; 5K Run/ Walk at 9:15 a.m.; and Kids Dash on Winslow Green (Madison and Winslow Way) at 10:30 a.m. Early registration is encouraged and all ages and abilities are welcome. All proceeds go to Bainbridge Youth Services (BYS), which for more than 50 years has been a cornerstone in the community, offering free and confidential counseling, scholarships and job services to youth and teens from ages 12 to 19. “Our ability to directly serve youth annually with 1,200 hours of free counseling would not be possible without the wonderful partnership between the sponsors and runners who support BYS and the services that so many

youth and their families depend upon each year,” said Bob Linz, board president of Bainbridge Youth Services. New this year will be a BYS preregistration Fun Run booth during the downtown street fair from 5 to 8 p.m. July 3 at Winslow Green. Race packets also will be available for pickup. Event check-in on July 4 begins at 7:30 a.m. at Winslow Green. Ribbons will be awarded to first, second and third place in each race for the male and female categories. All Kids Dash participants receive ribbons. Preregistration fee for the 5K and the 1-Mile race is $20 with an optional T-shirt while supplies last. Kids Dash preregistration and day-of-race fee is $5 or $10 with T-shirt while supplies last. Day-of-race registration fee for the 1 Mile and 5K is $25. This year’s Fun Run T-shirts feature artwork by Bainbridge High School senior Natalie Godfrey, winner of this year’s Fun Run Art contest. Secondand third-place winners, respectively, were Rose Conlan and Anna Stearns. “Over 35 years the Fun Run has become a time-honored tradition for Bainbridge Island, bringing families and youth together to run or walk to kickoff our Grand Old Fourth of July celebration,” said Marina Cofer-Wildsmith, executive director of Bainbridge Youth Services. “This event exemplifies our mission of promoting youth wellbeing because it ties our area youth with their community and encourages them to give back in a positive and productive way.” In addition to online registration at www. bifunrun.com, sign-up forms are available at the BYS office in Room 103 of the 200 Building on the Bainbridge High School campus. The BYS office can be reached at 206 842-9675. Can’t participate in the event but still want to TURN TO ROUNDUP | A25
