Lewis wins President’s Volunteer Service Award South Kitsap High School student Karla Lewis has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a President’s Volunteer Service Award. The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was granted by the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), recognizes middle level and high school students across America for outstanding volunteer service.

Comedy show, silent auction is March 21 The Sidney Glen Elementary School PTA and “The Great Chris” will present the second annual Parents Night Out Comedy Show and Silent Auction on Friday, March 21, at The Clubhouse at McCormick Woods. The silent auction will begin at 7 p.m. and the show is at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door for the adultonly event. Seating is limited. Comedian Nigel Larson is set to

Purkett named as Commended Student Principal Jerry Holsten of South Kitsap High School announced that Hue Purkett has been named as a Commended Student in the 2014 National Merit Scholarship Program. A letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to this scholastically talented senior. Port Orchard resident and U.S. Navy Captain Ed Pierson (left) receives a hand-carved plaque in appreciation for his service from ITCS Jacqueline Riner, the Joint Contingency Unit’s senior enlisted leader. Pierson relinquished command of U.S. Pacific Fleet’s Joint Contingency Unit (JCU) to Captain Chris Siegle during a ceremony held recently in San Diego at Third Fleet Headquarters. Pierson, a 20-year Port Orchard resident, has held several senior leadership roles in the Navy including Commanding Officer, Patrol Squadron 69 and Joint Operations Center Director, U.S. Pacific Command. He currently serves at the Pentagon as Chief Staff Officer for Training, Readiness & Strategic Communications within the CNO’s Management Analysis Unit. As a civilian, Pierson works for The Boeing Company as senior manager of Business Operations in the flight test and evaluation business unit.

OBITUARIES

Elise Fulton, 28, of Port Orchard, died March 4, 2014, at Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton from Leukemia. She was born Dec. 2, 1985 in Las Vegas, Nev., to Jeff and Linda Fulton. Elise was a member of Fulton the Family Worship Center in Port Orchard. She is survived by her son, Joey Blanchette; parents, Jeff and Linda Fulton; brother, Brad Fulton; grandparents, Linda Lanning, Frank Fulton and C. Jerry Edens, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. A funeral service was held March 11, at the Family Worship Center, Burial was at Sunset Lane Memorial Park in Port Orchard. Robert Boehme Dr. Robert Boehme, 94, of Port Orchard, died March 9, 2014. He was born on March 4, 1920, to Herman and Lucille Boehme in Akron, Ohio. Robert was a graduate of Copley High School, University of Akron. and Western Reserve Medical School in Ohio. Prior to entering medical school, he served in the U.S. Army

Medical Corps during World War II at Crile Army Hospital in Cleveland. In 1951, Robert married Dorothy Johanson. He began his practice in Port Orchard in 1949 and spent the last 24 years as a federal medical Boehme officer. He was awarded the Meritorious Civilian Medal for Distinguished Service by the Secretary of the Navy in 1998. After his first wife died in 1962, Robert married Mary Neal. He was a former South Kitsap School District board director and the first medical director of Kitsap Physicians Service. He was a pianist and served as an organist for a number of churches. He is survived by his wife, Mary; sons Greg (Marta) of Mukilteo and Ron (Shirley) of Port Orchard; six grandchildren; and brother, Jack, of Denton, Texas. A memorial service is set for 1 p.m. Saturday, March 29, at Christ the Rock Community Church, 4100 SW Old Clifton Road in Port Orchard.
