Diavonte DeGrace, 13, explains his presentation during the Langley Middle School Science Fair on Thursday, March 6. Diavonte studied how different rocks were damaged at freezing temperatures.

Curiosity was key for students in Langley Middle School’s Science Fair on Thursday night. Students from the sixth, seventh and eighth grade presented their conclusions after months of research. The students began working on the projects in late November, as instructed by middle school science teachers Sandy Gilbert, Susan Milan and Don Zisette. Students were judged on their relevance of topic, a testable question, procedures and variables, display of data, and conclusion supported by the data. Three winners from each grade were chosen along with five honorable mentions. The winners for the eighth grade are firstplace winner Emma Scotthanson, second place Elli Sandberg and third place Lily Bjork. Honorable mentions include Ben Borson, Charlie LeWarne, Aengus Dubendorf, Tristan Passemard and Lewis Pope. Seventh-grade awards include first-place winner Farriss Jokinen, second place Ainsley Nelson and third place Annie Saltee.
