Toastmasters offering class

The Sidney Speakers Toastmaster Club of Port Orchard will offer a six-week course in public speaking and leadership starting Tuesday, Jan. 28. Classes will be conducted on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at the Park Vista Assisted Living Center, corner of Jackson and Lund. Cost is $25 or $20 for seniors or students. Class size is limited to 10. Quest Program accepting nominations Nominations are now being accepted for Quest, South Kitsap School District’s program for highly capable students. Students in grades 2-8 who are enrolled in the South Kitsap School District are eligible for nomination.

All second grade students will be administered the first phase of testing in their regular classrooms. If you would like to nominate a student currently enrolled in grades 2-8 or would like more information about the program, visit www.skitsap.wednet.edu. The deadline for accepting nominations for the 2014-2015 school year is Friday, March 7.

One student will receive the $2,000 scholarship grant, which will be used to further the applicant’s study in the photographic arts. The winner will be chosen based upon photographic and scholastic studies, and the student’s wish to continue their studies in the photographic arts. The application postmarked deadline is March 22 and the winner will be announced in June. KACE seeking ESL volunteers

The Professional Photographers of Washington announced that applications are being accepted for the 2014 Student Photographer of the Year Award, which is open to all high school seniors in the state, graduating in 2014.

The Kitsap Adult Center for Education (KACE) is seeking volunteers who could help adults improve their reading, writing and other basic skills. Robert James Brown, who portrayed Abraham Lincoln in area parades, Civil War re-enactments and other civic events, died in Port Orchard on Feb. 12 — the former president’s birthday. According to media reports, the 72-year-old Brown, who lived in north Mason County near Tahuya, suffered a brain abscess on Jan. 1. Brown’s last public appearance was Nov. 11, 2013, when he delivered the Gettysburg Address at the Veterans Day Service at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds. He was born on July 27, 1941, to Margaret Reska and Frederick Brown in Mt. Clemons, Mich., and served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Brown moved from Iowa to Bremerton in 1982. He is survived by a sister, Donna Yant of Evansdale, Iowa, along with several nieces and nephews. In May, his ashes will accompany unclaimed remains of deceased veterans in the Run to Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent. No other services are planned at this time.

William Wren

William T. Wren, 103, of Port Orchard, died Feb 14, 2014 at St Anthony’s Hospital in Gig Harbor. He was born in Muscatine, Iowa, in 1910 to John and Emma Wren. William retired from Puget Sound Wren Naval Shipyard after 35 years of service. He was a resident in Burley since 1945 and resided at Family First for the past two and a half years. He is survived by one son, Gaylord Wren of Port Orchard; one brother, Kenneth Wren of Arizona, 18 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren. Funeral service is set for 11 a.m. today, Feb. 21, at Haven of Rest Chapel in Gig Harbor. A viewing is set for 10 a.m. Burial will be at Artondale Cemetery in Gig Harbor. Norman L. Teeters, 81, of Port Orchard, died Feb. 5, 2014. He was born March 15, 1932, in Oklahoma City, Okla. Norman worked in maintenance at the Retsil Veterans Home.
