Bakalarski, Callaghan combine for 51 points in win

You could save a life!

By CHRIS CHANCELLOR Sports Editor

TACOMA — There were a couple of factors that seemed to conspire against South Kitsap. The Wolves not only had to win on the road against the first-place team in Class 4A Narrows, but they also had to accomplish it on Feb. 6 as Stadium honored its senior class. But neither seemed to work against South as it never trailed during a 63-46 win that secured a playoff berth in next week’s West Central/ Southwest Bi-District Tournament. The Wolves, who entered the game facing the prospect of missing the playoffs, could even host a district game if they finish in second place. South (15-6 overall, 7-5 league) also won a tiebreaker Saturday against Bellarmine

Prep, 70-60, to secure second place in 4A Narrows. The Wolves opened districts Thursday night against Puyallup. “I think our leaders really started stepping up,” South coach John Callaghan said. “We have to play with a sense of urgency. Now with our season on the line — how good do we want to be? To the kids’ credit, they stepped up and played aggressive.” The Wolves took an 11-2 lead to start the game and took a 32-18 advantage into halftime. Callaghan said that was significant because he felt it set the tone for the second half. The Tigers (13-6, 9-3) struggled to reduce their deficit during the second half as seniors Ryley Callaghan and Caulin Bakalarski continued to hit shots. Bakalarski’s 3-pointer with 1:06 left in the third quarter extended South’s lead to 51-33. The duo combined for 51 points. “When we’re both on it’s pretty dangerous,” Ryley Callaghan said. About the only negative for South occurred a couple of minutes into the game when

senior post Forest Bingham went down with a left ankle injury. Bingham did not return and John Callaghan was not certain about the severity of his injury. “Hopefully Forrest is OK,” Callaghan said. “I’m just hopeful that he’s ready to go for the playoffs.” Without the 6-foot-3 Bingham, the Wolves do not have much size in the post outside of 6-6 sophomore Isaiah Lewis. In Bingham’s absence, Callaghan used a smaller lineup with 6-2 Logan Knowles in the post. Callaghan said his team was able to exploit matchups when he rotated Lewis and Knowles. Whatever the combination, Callaghan likes how his team is performing. “Our guys played really well,” he said. “They played smart and are starting to play really well together. We are definitely playing better than we have all season without a doubt.” If the Wolves win their fifth consecutive game Saturday, they will open districts at 7 p.m. Thursday against 4A South Puget Sound League’s

No. 7. Otherwise, they will travel at that time to play the SPSL’s fourth seed. “Obviously, we would love to play at home with our crowd,” Callaghan said. “They’re awesome. That’s a big advantage for us.” Saturday

Junior Sarah Layton has been the Wolves’ top scorer throughout the season, but Mae Jacobsen emerged as the team’s leader during the first day. She had 963 points through six games to place 33rd. Even though she is only a freshman, Morgon said Jacobsen is experienced as “she comes from a family of bowlers. Along with Jacobsen and Layton, Morgon expects to return junior Savannah Welch, sophomore Libby Morey and freshman Sarah Stolle. The team graduates Emily Novogradic and Sydney Jones, both of whom helped guide South to a Class 4A West Central District Tournament championship on Feb. 1. “They’re all supportive of each other and they all seem to have pretty good friendships and relationships,” Morgon said. “This team bonded so nicely. It’s like a little family. I think that’s helped with their bowling.” She also is hopeful that the program’s success can attract new bowlers. “This is helping a lot because word is out that there actually is a bowling team,” Morgon said. “It just brings momentum and excitement.”

Macabitas overcame challenges to qualify in 200 IM By CHRIS CHANCELLOR Sports Editor

The lone South Kitsap swimmer advancing to state is the one who faced a competitive disadvantage. Dylan Macabitas, a freshman who attends Cedar Heights Junior High, often was in the pool 30 minutes later than his teammates for practice because students are released from his school later. But Macabitas overcame that disadvantage during Saturday’s Class 4A West Central District championship meet at Curtis. Macabitas finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 56.08 seconds to earn an automatic qualifying time to next week’s Class 4A state meet at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way. “I was just so happy and so blessed,” said Macabitas, who also finished 12th in the 200 individual medley in 2:10.7. South coach Cliff Rousell said Macabitas never let his short workouts curtail him from his goal of advancing to state. “That was a goal of his from the beginning of the season,” he said. “He raced well all season long and trained hard.” Many swimmers have said their first experience at state was intimidating because there are more spectators and participants than they have encountered before. But Macabitas said he is prepared for that. “I started club swimming when I was 6 years old,” he said. “I’ve been there a lot. I’m ready.” Macabitas was among seven swimmers and two divers that competed at districts for South. Only Chris Carter, who competed in the 200- and 400-relays, and Tristan Martin graduate. Martin swam the 200 medley relay and 100 breaststroke. “We have a lot of newcomers with good experience from the playoff rounds,” Rousell said. “Every single one of them posted a new personal best. It left them hungry for more. They’re already talking about next year.”
