“I feel like maybe I can make a difference,” Hannold said Friday.

Hannold filed with the state’s Public Disclosure Commission to run against Democrat Karla Jacks for Island County District No. 3, the position currently held by Kelly Emerson.

Emerson said in December that she will not seek reelection in 2014 citing the toll the commute has taken on her personal life.

Jacks, a Camano Island resident, announced in August her intention to run.

Hannold, a retired Navy chief, said he’s been “very fortunate” to have been stationed at Whidbey Island Naval Air Station for his entire 21-year career.

“I love it here,” he said.

Hannold said he joined the Navy relatively late in life — at 29 — because “he felt he had missed something important” in his life, namely serving his country.

Now a self-employed contractor, Hannold worked on the EA-6B Prowlers during his Navy career and has a background training new recruits on maintenance procedures. He was also elected

Coupeville resident Judy Gremmel was on a mission in recent months to raise awareness about what she calls the “pathetic” jet noise disclosure given to homebuyers over the past decade or longer.

Gremmel was in constant contact with Whidbey Island Naval Air Station, Island County commissioners, state legislators and news outlets throughout the region claiming that residents were “trapped, not told.”

In response to criticism by residents such as Gremmel as well as county leadership, Island County real estate brokers will now use an updated, expanded jet noise disclosure form starting this week.

Port officials said they noticed the state of the stairs last month. A chain currently blocks the entry at the top and bottom of the stairs as officials decide how to address safety concerns.

The access is just the latest maintenance problem to arise for a public entity that owns two 100-year-old facilities — the Coupeville Wharf and Greenbank Farm.

A federal lawsuit against Island County has stalled over a bounced check.

Olga Nada, who identified herself as “the chancellor in Christ of Cosmic Light Creations” and a member of the Tepes family, filed a petition for declaratory judgment against the county in U.S. District Court Dec. 10.

Nada sought to prevent the county from auctioning off property owned by the Cosmic Light Creations because of unpaid property taxes. The claim states that Cosmic Light Creation is a private religious organization and should have never been assessed.

The lawsuit states that the chancellor of Christ and the state established a “treaty relationship” in 2002.

Nada wrote that she demanded in September that county treasurer answer

“seven good-faith and material questions” before she would pay the taxes, but she didn’t receive an answer. The questions were all constitutional in nature and focused on the “Federal Coinage Act of 1792.”

Documents Nada submitted indicate that about $16,000 in unpaid taxes, penalties and interest were due for the property on Sundown Lane in Freeland. The property’s assessed value was $340,000 in 2013.

Federal court records show that a $400 check Nada wrote for the filing fee was returned because of insufficient funds.

After Nada failed to respond, the federal court judge notified Nada on Dec. 30, 2013, that she had 20 days to either pay the fee or apply to proceed “in forma pauperis,” or the case will be subject to dismissal.

No further documents have been filed in the case.

Cosmic Light’s lawsuit against county stalls

Because of safety concerns, leaders for the Port of Coupeville have deemed unsafe a Front Street entry point to the beach.

People can still walk down to the beach by using the Front Street deck, located next to the Knead and Feed.

“The stairway is falling apart and it’s not safe to go down there,” said Tim McDonald, executive director for Port of Coupeville.

McDonald said parts of the concrete stairs are broken, the sand underneath is washing away and there’s nothing anchoring the stairs.

There is also a large piece of wood blocking the stairs and hampering people’s access to the shore.

Officials from the Island County Sheriff’s Office, the Department of Corrections and Oak Harbor Police will speak at a meeting Thursday about a homeless, Level 3 sex offender who’s moving to the Oak Harbor area.

In addition, a Level 2 sex offender recently moved to Southwest 10th Avenue in Oak Harbor.

A person deemed as “a Level 3 sex offender” is considered a high risk to reoffend; Level 2 offenders are considered a moderate risk.

The meeting is 6:30 p.m.

Christianson, 34, is a convicted rapist with a history of failing to report to his community corrections officer, said the sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff Mark Brown said Christianson is being released from prison and has no place to live. State law dictates that he has to live in the county where he committed his first felony offense.

Christianson’s first felony was on Camano Island, Brown said.

Brown said he and Department of Corrections officials are working to find housing for Christianson somewhere in the state, but haven’t had any luck so far.

The Honey Bear helps to sweeten education locally Shop will donate all the profits to Coupeville schools

As fifth grader Catherine Lhamon entered The Honey Bear, she was excited to spend the dollar she’d been allocated.

“There’s 100 cents in a dollar,” she said.

Helene Lhamon, Catherine’s mother, said they’ve been coming down to the store since she could walk.

“Back then, it took us 45 minutes to walk down here, and 45 minutes to walk back,” Helene said.

The Honey Bear will host a fundraiser for the Community Foundation for Coupeville Public Schools Sunday, Jan. 26. Owner Karla Mackintosh said she will donate 100 percent of the profits to the organization.

The foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides support for schools, teachers and students in Coupeville. It disperses annual mini-grants to teachers and scholarships for graduating students. It also financially assists students in need.

Mackintosh has donated to the foundation before, but

this is her first time hosting the fundraiser and she’s excited.

“It benefits my customer base,” Mackintosh said. “I always like to help the kids and donate locally.”

The Honey Bear has been supplying children with candy since 1980, and Mackintosh took over the local sweet shop in 2001. She enjoys being a destination for all of the kids.

“Every little town should have a store like this,” Mackintosh said. “It’s about perpetuating memories.”

After she’d already picked out her candy, Catherine Lhamon still wandered around the store, looking for future birthday presents for her friends.

“It’s a shop full of entertainment,” Catherine Lhamon said.

From candy, to wind-up toys, to tiddly winks and other small treasures, there’s plenty to explore in every nook and cranny of the shop.

Catherine Lhamon kept finding new toys and books she hadn’t seen on any of her previous trips.

“You can get a million, trillion things cheaper than

anywhere else,” Catherine Lhamon said.

Besides being a wellknown stop for all the kids, the shop has also become a place where adults can get some help.

“If you need help finding a birthday present for an 8-year-old boy, ask,” Helene Lhamon said.

Mackintosh knows most of the kids and what they like since they come into the store, Helene said.

And if you’re lucky, you might even get to hear the Honey Bear song when you stop in.

When Mackintosh put on the song, Catherine Lhamon started to sing along and dance. But like the song, her visit eventually has to come to an end and it was time to head back home.

But she said she’d be back on Sunday.

Firefighters faced a number of challenges before they could extinguish the fire.

With a portion of the road wiped out by the landslide, the only access to the lower part of the neighborhood is via a small, barely one-lane wide road.

Because of the road’s width and a hairpin turn, the large fire trucks weren’t able to maneuver down to the neighborhood.

Three smaller brush trucks responded to the Sunday evening conflagration, said Chad Michael, deputy chief for Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue.

The fire was reported by Ralph Young, who lives in a house atop of the bluff overlooking the manufactured home. Young said he was just getting ready for bed after celebrating the Seahawks victory when he spotted the fire.

“It was quite an inferno,” Young said.

Michael said the home was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived, which was approximately 10 minutes after getting the report.

Firefighters had to access the fire from a neighboring residence.

Fire hoses were lowered approximately 500 feet down a ravine created by last year’s landslide and up the mound where the abandoned house sat.

A brush apparatus holds 250 gallons of water. While one was used to fight the

blaze, the other two were used to ferry water to the site, Michael said.

A total 20 firefighters from Central Whidbey Fire and Rescue, North Whidbey Fire and Rescue, Naval Air Station Whidbey and South Whidbey Fire/EMS assisted in dousing the blaze.

The blaze was extinguished around 1:50 a.m. Monday morning and a small number of firefighters remained on scene throughout Monday extinguishing any flare ups.

A fire investigator combed through the wreckage Tuesday to try and determine a cause of the blaze, Michael said.

The house was supposed to be unoccupied and didn’t have any electrical service.

Island County Sheriff Mark Brown said the fact that there wasn’t electricity to the house makes the fire suspicious.

Brown said the the sheriff’s office is also conducting an investigation.

Young said neighbors saw evidence in the months since the landslide that people were breaking into the house.

People tried to board up the residence only to find the board later removed, he said.

“WACOPS is made up of men and women in law enforcement who are dedicated to protecting and serving our communities.”

“It is a great honor to be recognized by this statewide group and my peers in law enforcement.”

Island County Commissioner Kelly Emerson, who represents Camano Island and North Whidbey Island, said that the feedback she has received from her constituency about Hayes is positive.

“Since he took office he has been very responsive to our requests,” Emerson said. “I’m very pleased that he’s been honored. Most folks on Camano are really happy with all their representatives.”

Sheriff Mark Brown, who oversees public safety on both Whidbey and Camano Islands, said that Hayes is a “very honest, very straightforward” kind of legislator.

“He brings a common sense approach

to the legislative process that I think we need,” Brown said.

“He thinks things through and he’s very genuine and insightful.”

The award was issued during WACOPS’ Winter Membership Meeting last week in Olympia. Hayes was joined by several law enforcement officers from the Camano Island and Stanwood area, including Dave Osman, Jim Phillips, Rich Phillips and Joe Uhrich.

“As a law enforcement officer and former president of the Washington Council of Police and Sheriff’s, representative Hayes understands the interests of our members and is a great advocate of our issues in the Legislature,” said WACOPS President Craig Bulkley.

“This award is to show our appreciation for his work to help law enforcement officers across the state of Washington in their efforts to protect and serve the public.”

In addition to Hayes, WACOPS also recognized Sen. Kirk Pearson of the Senate Republican Caucus, Sen. Jeannie Darnielle of the Senate Democratic Caucus, and Rep. Marcus Riccelli of the House Democratic Caucus.

Old Form 22W may be inadequate, but it was clearly a red flag PUBLISHER’S COLUMN

Citizens of Ebey’s Reserve President Michael Monson claims the Internet posting by a local Realtor stating that he initialed Form 22W a decade ago is an attempt to “discredit him.”

Perhaps that’s true, but the fact is Monson did sign a form of disclosure when he bought his home.

That’s pertinent information in the debate over jet noise and the Navy’s Outlying Field Coupeville.

Prior to the revelation, made by Realtor Joe Mosolino, Monson made a point of publicly declaring he and other COER members received no warning about jet noise when they bought their homes.

Here’s what old Form 22w said: “The property is located within an Airport Noise Zone 2 or 3 impacted area. Persons on the premises may be exposed to a significant noise level as a result of airport operations. Island County has placed certain restrictions on construction of property within airport noise zones. Before purchasing or leasing the above property, you should consult the Island County Noise Level Reduction Ordinance to determine the restrictions which have been placed on the property, if any.”

Note, the form cites “SIGNIFICANT noise level.”

At some point, we all sign paperwork without reading it — how many of us have read every word of our cell phone agreements? Regardless, with our acceptance, we accept accountability.

While original Form 22W wasn’t as specific as it should be, it is, at the very least, a red flag for a homebuyer.

I lived on Whidbey in the late 1980s and early 1990s, and jet noise was as much an issue then as it is now. I had a coworker who bought a home in Admiral’s Cove. She complained regularly about the noise from the A-6 Intruders and EA-6B Prowlers.

I was baffled by her complaints. At what point, I wondered, does caveat emptor — buyer beware — come into play?

When I was buying my first home in the 1990s, I didn’t even consider property in the Admiral’s Cove area. When I was searching for a place to live this past February, same thing.

Should call Form 22W ‘nondisclosure’ Editor, Like many citizens trying to stop Growler jet flights at the Navy’s Outlying Field, I’ve been targeted by those portraying Growler jet noise as the “sound of freedom.”

We are accused of having signed “noise disclosures” when our homes were purchased and therefore have no right to complain.

Our alleged “prior knowledge” is the linchpin in the argument to keep the OLF open.

Noise victims like me have claimed that we never signed a noise disclosure or a proper one. Real estate “professionals” are now very rightfully worried about reputations and lawsuits.

When Windermere Real Estate Coupeville offered to check my per-

sonal file in their office for a “noise disclosure” late this last December, I agreed.

They found a one page, four-line document I initialed 10 years ago.

This so called “Form 22W” said nothing about jets, or the OLF and only made reference to “airport noise.”

I never have found this worthless form in my closing documents.

According to the director of the Island County Planning Department, what I initialed was not even one of the two documents I should have been given.

Form “22W” has no standing.

It is a worthless piece of paper.

When Windermere Coupeville found the worthless “22W” in my file, it was sent, without my permission, to Joseph Mosolino, the Windermere owner and managing broker in Freeland.

Clearly, this posting was to discredit those of us who have been critical of jet noise.

It stated that I, as president of Citizens of Ebey’s Reserve, signed a “noise disclosure.”

It failed to mention that what I signed was a useless piece of paper given to me by a Windermere Real Estate agent.

Many of us were given what could best be described as a “nondisclosure.”

So, don’t believe it when you hear that people complaining about jet noise were warned. They weren’t.

And don’t assume that all real estate “professionals” will maintain the confidentiality of your private real estate transactions.

It just isn’t true. They won’t.

Cost of college overwhelming Editor, I would like to bring up an issue that has not perplexed me until this year.

As a senior in high school I began the year excited to finally be here, but when college application deadlines began to pop up, it made me question just exactly who has the money to pay nearly $70,000 a year to a university or college.

Presumably, I would love to get a master’s degree in the environmental field, so I would be paying $70,000 for each of those years for an estimate of about $420,000 dollars for a master’s degree.

I could buy a house for that

amount.

There is, of course, the option of scholarships, but they don’t make it easy to obtain them, you have to jump through flaming hoops to apply to get just the chance for the scholarship.

Even then, unless you are a straight-A student, you most likely won’t get enough to cover your first year, maybe your textbooks though.

It is painful to be working on my senior project and be fearful of even going to college because of the outrageous tuition most universities are charging.

I just wish something could be done to help out our education system to ease this stress on the incoming generations, who will be unsteady about going to college because of the price tag we put on it.

Don’t fall for woman’s story Editor, There are many generous, charitable folks in Coupeville, but that does not mean they deserve to have their hard-earned money taken from them by deception.

As I have chatted with friends and neighbors, a pattern of deception in our community has emerged that has been going on for at least two years, or since the Arts and Crafts Festival of 2012 and maybe before.

Individuals are being approached by a middle aged, slim blonde woman — not a lady — and after a smile and friendly hello, she starts telling a story about how she has just been reunited with

her children from Child Protective Services after a long time and they just need a few dollars to get back home. Home, she tells people, is either on the mainland or across the mountains.

It seems there are no laws against panhandling on Whidbey Island unless they are aggressive and threatening. Therefore, when she is contacted, the only thing security personnel can do is ask her to leave the area.

I am certainly not averse to charity and gifts from the heart being given to those who have had difficulties in life. We all need a supportive hand from time to time, emotional and even financial.

However, honesty is the key here. Lying about your circumstances to take money deceptively from kind folks is just wrong.

Don’t be taken in by this woman.

Rep. Marko Liias has been the only person seeking the vacancy created when Shin resigned Jan. 7 after being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.

Liias is expected to be formally nominated Saturday

by Democratic precinct committee officers in the 21st Legislative District and officially appointed Tuesday by the Snohomish County Council.

Then the 32-year-old Liias will pack his bags in the House, where he’s prospered the past six years, and resettle in the Senate, where it won’t take long for his liberal beliefs and partisan inclinations to emerge.

Democrats voting Saturday already know where the aspiring and loquacious pol is coming from. Here’s what the soon-to-be-senator wrote to them:

Too often, Tea Party extremism and gridlock have prevented important action on the issues that matter to middle class families across our state. While there’s an absence of intrigue for the Senate appointment, there is a bit of suspense surrounding the selection of a successor to Liias.

Three people are seeking the House appointment: Lillian Ortiz-Self, Susan Phillips and Darrell Chapman. Under state law, their names will be forwarded to the Snohomish County Council for consideration.

What Democrats must decide Saturday is who will be their first, second and third choices to represent the district, which includes Mukilteo, Edmonds, Lynnwood and south Everett.

Ortiz-Self of Mukilteo is the odds-on favorite to garner the most votes. She’s been campaigning for the seat since October. That’s when Shin first announced he intended to retire at the end of 2014 and Liias declared he’d run for the seat.

A middle-school counselor and member of the Washington Commission on Hispanic Affairs, Ortiz-Self has been endorsed by several state

lawmakers inside and outside Snohomish County.

She’s also reportedly made a strong impression on House Speaker Frank Chopp, D-Seattle.

Chapman, of Edmonds, can boast a long record of serving the party and helping elect Democrats into city, county, state and federal offices — including many of those backing Ortiz-Self.

He’s president of the Snohomish County Labor Council and political director of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. But that solid foundation may not be solid enough come Saturday.

Phillips, of Edmonds, is the wild card. She entered late and has been the least involved in partisan activities of the three.

As the president of the Edmonds School Board, she’s the only one with experience winning an elected office. Appointed to the school board in 2007, she’s won twice — in 2009 and again in November.

He was born in Rensselaer, Ind., Dec. 22, 1931 to Roy and Ada Sanders. He was married to Charleen Rutledge June 3, 1956.

’Cat wrestlers pile up wins Oak Harbor collected three individual championships and eight top-four finishes on the way to finishing second at the 11-team Jack Reynolds Memorial Tournament at Mercer Island High School Saturday, Jan. 18.

The solid effort at the Reynolds Tournament wrapped up a successful week for the Wildcats, which included a 33-30 Wesco win at Marysville-Pilchuck Thursday and a sweep of the PanCan double-dual meet at Hazen High School Friday.

At the tournament, Oak Harbor complemented its winning total by receiving the sportsmanship award, which was voted on by the coaches and officials.

In the team race, Sultan nipped Oak Harbor 154-149 although the Wildcats had one more wrestler place.

Sultan won 28 of its 41 individual matches with 21 pins; Oak Harbor won 26 with 16 pins. Host Mercer Island finished third with 120 points.

Jeremy Vester (132 pounds), Jahleel Vester (138) and Jackson Constant (285) finished first in their weight classes; Mark Johnston (152) placed second; and Christian Bertram (113), Jacob Dugin (195) and Tyler Adamson (285) snared thirds.

At the PanCan double dual in Renton, the Wildcats defeated the host Highlanders 48-29 and Highline 48-24.

The match is an annual event hosted by Hazen and its coach Rory Magana, an Oak Harbor High School grad, to bring awareness to pancreatic cancer. Rod Magana, Rory’s father and longtime Oak Harbor resident, died from the disease.

All of the Wildcats’ non-forfeit wins in the two matches were by pins.

Winners against Hazen were Stahl (106 pounds, 3:29), Bertram (113, 3:59), Jeremy Vester (132, 3:01), Jahleel Vester (138, 3:10), Tarrant (170, 1:25), (195, 3:07) and Quinday (220, 1:12).

Winners in the Highline match were Caidic (120, 3:49), Johnston (152, 3:45), Tarrant (170, 3:36), Dugin (195, 3:48) and Quinday (220,1:09). “(The) upper weights stepped up in big ways, especially against Highline, allowing both Vesters to save a match toward the match limit of 33,” Esvelt said.

Meadowdale escapes Oak Harbor’s upset bid

The Meadowdale High School girls basketball team withstood two Oak Harbor rallies to avoid an upset, winning 61-53 at Oak Harbor Friday, Jan. 21.

The Mavericks zipped to a 13-1 lead, but Oak Harbor refused to give in. Fueled by five points from Julie Jansen, the Wildcats went on a 12-2 run to slice the gap to 15-13 at the end of the first quarter.

Oak Harbor kept the momentum, taking the lead 19-18 midway through the second period.

The Mavs (3-4, 5-9) then took off on another run to lead 34-22 at halftime.

Again, Oak Harbor refused to fold. Natalie Fiallos scored nine points, including a three-pointer at the buzzer, and the Wildcats hit 10 free throws in the third quarter to outscore the Mavericks 22-14.

PREP ROUNDUP Free throws help Mavs by OH boys The Meadowdale boys basketball team shot 33 free throws to four for visiting Oak Harbor, and, not surprisingly, defeated the Wildcats 59-53 Friday, Jan. 17.

Oak Harbor sank five more field goals than the Mavericks, but Meadowdale made up the difference at the foul line and from beyond the arc.

As well as having a 12point advantage from foul shots (making 15 to Oak Harbor’s three), Meadowdale also outscored the Wildcats 24-12 in three pointers.

After a back-and-forth first quarter, Meadowdale (3-4, 9-5) upped its 14-13 lead to 30-19 in the second period before ending the half ahead 31-23.

The Wildcats scored one more point than the Mavericks in each of the

third and fourth quarters, trailing 43-36 after three, but couldn’t claw all the way back.

Seahawks fever grips Oak Harbor as fans show their passion for NFL team bound for the Super Bowl

It’s going to be a while before Joanne Hartley can stop smiling.

The grin was still wide Monday. She was still even wearing her blue hat.

“It might take a year to quit smiling,” she said.

“After we win the Super Bowl, maybe.”

Hartley, an ardent Seattle Seahawks fan from Oak Harbor, was still abuzz Monday, a day after the Seahawks defeated the San Francisco 49ers to clinch the franchise’s second berth into the Super Bowl.

The lady friends call “Mama Seahawk” survived not one, but two big parties in Oak Harbor over the weekend.

The first came during the official Seahawks rally staged at Flyers Restaurant and Brewery Friday night.

The second came when Hartley and her husband gathered with friends at

the Oak Harbor home of a close friend Sunday for two special occasions: the NFC Championship game and Hartley’s 77th birthday.

Hartley asked for just one thing Sunday ­— and got it when the Seahawks secured a 23-17 victory.

“I got my birthday wish,” she said.

The celebration was one of many that took place on Whidbey Island over the weekend.

Seahawks fans, known as the 12th man, arrived in droves at Flyers Restaurant Friday night for the official rally. Covered outside seating was added to accomodate the overflowing crowd.

Louie-G’s Pizza and China City restaurants hosted similar events in Oak Harbor Saturday night.

It marked the third 12th man rally staged on Whidbey Island in the past month, starting with a gathering of about 150 blue and green clad fans at the Deception Pass bridge on

The Super Bowl between the Seahawks and Denver Broncos will take place Feb. 2 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J. “It’s great to be a Seahawks fan,” Oak Harbor mayor Scott Dudley said from the rally at Flyers Friday night.

Dudley, a fan since his childhood days in Olympia, showed up at the rally sporting a curly blue wig and Seahawks stickers under his eyes. Many didn’t recognize him.

“For a long time growing up, we were the laughingstock of the NFL,” Dudley said. “The fans didn’t waver.

It’s great to finally see some success.”

Dudley said that the City of Oak Harbor is showing its allegiance by flying a 12th man flag in town.

It’s that sort of support that warms Hartley’s heart.

She’s been a Seahawks fan since the franchise started in 1976. Her husband, Russell Hartley, is a diehard fan, too.

Kennefick said they sang happy birthday for Hartley before and after the game.

“It was a great game,” Hartley said. “They had me worried for a while.”

Hartley is crazy about Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson and isn’t bothered too much by the antics of Richard Sherman, who became a lightning rod over his postgame remarks Sunday.

“He’s just a young man,” Hartley said. “That’s it.

Sometimes, that happens. In the passion of the moment, we all sometimes say the wrong things.”

It will be tough for Hartley to contain her excitement in the buildup to the Super Bowl.

She has some mixed feelings, but not enough to get too carried away.

She’s always liked the Broncos’ biggest star.

“I’ve always been a Peyton Manning fan no matter who he’s playing for,” she said.

“I hate to tell him: ‘The boom is coming. I love you to death, but look out.’”

Director brings different sort of mystery to Whidbey Playhouse

As a well-traveled, veteran community theater actor and director, Kevin Wm. Meyer has seen lots of different stages and places to perform.

He was once part of a traveling theater company in Miami, Fla., and later San Francisco that would break out its act in some of the tightest quarters imaginable.

So, when Meyer arrived on Whidbey Island three years ago and got a look at the Whidbey Playhouse, it opened his eyes to the possibilities of community theater in Oak Harbor.

“I was really shocked when I saw how big this theater was,” Meyer said. “I never worked in a community theater with this size of stage or audience. It’s an amazing facility we have here.”

Meyer has brought to life a variety of different characters in acting roles he’s played

since his arrival in Oak Harbor and has been busy behind the scenes as one of the playhouse’s 11 board members.

This week, he will make his Whidbey Playhouse directorial debut in the mystery, “Book of Days,” which opens to the public at 7:30 Friday night and runs through Feb. 9.

“I was really happy to get a chance to direct and hope and want to do more,” Meyer said. “I’m really happy with how the show has turned out.”

Meyer credited the dedication of local actors who had to put in long hours during a rehearsal schedule that started in October, was interrupted by holiday shows, then resumed.

“It’s so different than anything I’ve done before,” said Keziah Benson, who plays one of the lead roles in the play. “We’ve been running an

It’s not something that I’m used to.”

The show will be unique to audiences in several ways.

For one, the actors never leave the stage except for intermission. The cast also plays the part of a chorus that

steps forward and announces dates and other facts to help viewers follow the show.

There also are no fancy sets. Lights dim while the actors move around furniture and props.

“We don’t have any stage hands,” said Allenda Jenkins, the show’s producer. “The

actors do it all. It’s a different type of theater staging than what we’ve seen.”

It’s the sort of departure from the norm that Meyer hopes audiences will embrace.

The work, written in 2000 by esteemed American playwright Lanford Wilson, was one Meyer recommended to the playhouse board and ultimately won approval.

The story is a mystery set in a small town dominated by a cheese plant, a fundamentalist church and a community theater. When the cheese plant’s owner dies mysteriously on a hunting trip, his bookkeeper suspects murder.

Benson plays the part of the bookkeeper, Ruth Hoch.

In the play, Hoch also is cast as Joan of Arc in a local production of George Bernard Shaw’s St. Joan and takes on the attributes of her character and seeks justice for the cheese plant owner’s death.

So at times, there is a play going on within the play. And there are shifts from real time to flashbacks.

Benson said she initially was confused.

“When I first read the script, I really didn’t know what was going on,” Benson said.

However, that’s partly according to plan, said actor Isaiah Zito, adding that the playwright leaves room for interpretation.

“I think that’s the way Lanford Wilson wrote the script,” said Zito, who plays Len Hoch, Ruth’s husband.

“It’s a little bit confusing and pieces start coming togeth-

er.”

Benson praised Meyer for his patience in working with actors. He brought wisdom and experience from three decades of acting and directing experience.

Meyer earned a bachelor of fine arts in acting and directing from the University of Miami before embarking on his theater career. He became artistic director for Unicorn Stage Company in San Francisco, where he also joined a group of improvised comedy performers.

“He doesn’t tell you you are doing something wrong,” Benson said. “He gives you suggestions.”

Meyer’s acting in recent plays in Oak Harbor has revealed both his humorous and dramatic sides. He offers a little of both in his acting part in “Book of Days,” playing the role of Reverend Bobby Groves.

But mostly, in this play, he was busy paying attention to others and coaching.

“Since he can do it all himself, that’s what he brings as a director,” Jenkins said.

“He allows all characters to stretch and find all of the different layers of their character.”

Jenkins joked that it’s always easy for her to find Meyer.

She just has to call the Whidbey Playhouse.

“He is in the theater all the time,” she said.

South Whidbey fire boat nears completion

A nearly $500,000 catamaran built for South Whidbey Fire/EMS is late for delivery, and daily penalties for the Freeland-based manufacturer may be adding up.

The 32-foot emergency response vessel, built by North Cross Aluminum, was recently put into the water in Oak Harbor and piloted to Langley where it will be permanently moored. The boat is not finished, however, and each day past the Jan. 1 delivery deadline could cost the builder $400 in late fees.

“They’re working fast and furious to get it done,” said Chief Rusty Palmer at a fire commissioners meeting.

A clause in the contract outlines the $400 per calendar day penalty, but enforcing the fines is at the discretion of the district’s fire commissioners.

“That will be entirely up to the board to enforce,” Palmer said. “If they feel the vendor has tried as hard as he can, they can forgo it.”

In a later interview, Palmer said North Cross may not be entirely at fault, as the builder has been bogged down with warranty issues of equipment supplied by other companies.

The main issue is that the Yanmar engine is not putting out its full 3,5000 RPM when it’s in gear, and North Cross owner Tim Leonard said representatives from the engine company and Hamilton Jet have run diagnostics over the past week trying to identify the problem.

“I’m basically held at it and ended up putting time backwards on it,” said Tim Leonard, owner of North Cross.

Several other factors have also slowed progress for the first-time boat building company, which was founded by Leonard a couple of years

ago. Although specializing in stair and railing construction, Leonard successfully pitched his company as the right builder for the job to fire commissioners in early 2013. Leonard touted personal experience in boat building along with that of his crew, many of whom previously worked at Nichols Brothers Boat Builders. Leonard’s company was the only one to submit a bid for the boat, despite South Whidbey Fire/ EMS sending specifications of the vessel to several builders. With a deadline for grant funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency looming, the commissioners awarded the contract to North Cross.

In summer, the North Cross project lead was severely injured in a collision on Highway 525, after which he was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center, and was unable to keep working.

Another possible headache for the new boat builder is the welding of a name plate onto the port and starboard stern that included the company’s name, logo and a phone number for North Cross Aluminum LLC. Federal law may restrict what can be put on the vessel, just as it has a rule to include oneinch words stating the boat was federally funded, Palmer said.

Loon field trip at Deception Pass, 9 a.m., Jan. 25, north end of West Beach parking lot, Deception Pass State Park. The Whidbey Audubon Society invites interested people to a field trip in hopes of seeing hundreds of Red-throated Loons gathering to feed in the outflowing current of Deception Pass. Participants can expect to see lots of other birds on the beach and through the forest.

Dress warmly and bring binoculars or a spotting scope if you have any. Depending on weather and interest, the trip will end at about noon, with a possible stop at Dugualla Bay on the way back toward Oak Harbor. Hannold said he decided to run for District 3, which comprises North Whidbey Island and Camano Island, for two reasons.

First, Hannold said he doesn’t “like the direction politics are going” in this country.

“You’re supposed to speak for the people you work for,” Hannold said. “These people don’t work for you, you work for them. A leader listens to his people.”

Second, he said he didn’t want to see yet another election proceed with an unopposed candidate.

“I wasn’t going to let Karla Jacks run unopposed,” Hannold said. “We should give people a choice.”

Even though he’s a registered Republican, Hannold said he wouldn’t necessarily follow party lines.

“If the majority say this is the way it should be, that’s how I’ll vote,” Hannold said.

“I think I might bring a lot of common sense and reason that the military breeds. That way we can get things moving along.”

Hannold referenced the Island County commissioners spat in 2013 over who served as chairperson.

After repeatedly pressuring the other commissioners, Emerson was finally granted the role of chairwoman in July, only to be stripped of the title a few months later for disregarding board consensus.

“Why is it important who the chair person is?” Hannold asked. “You should be talking about issues.”

Not planning to raise much money for his campaign, Hannold said he’s looking at “going at this old school” with door knocking and talking to residents.

FORM 22W CONTINUED FROM A1 The previous one-paragraph disclosure, Form 22W, provided to homebuyers within closing documents, came under scrutiny in the wake of complaints and a federal lawsuit filed over noise produced by the Navy’s new EA-18G Growler.

Gremmel, who assisted in the creation of a new blog entitled, “Citizens Harmed by Disclosure Deception,” said that, while the new disclosure is good news for future homebuyers, it doesn’t help those who already purchased homes.

“It’s a sad day for people who didn’t get any of this information earlier,” Gremmel said. “Now this disclosure will just make it harder to sell and get away from the noise.”

The Navy is transitioning to the Growler from the EA-6B Prowler, and some residents on Central and North Whidbey claim the Growler is louder and more disruptive.

The Navy, however, maintains that the Growler’s noise levels are comparable to the Prowler, but resonates at a different frequency.

As a result, some residents, many of whom live around the Navy’s Outlying Field Coupeville, complained that they were not properly warned about jet noise levels at the time they bought their homes.

Island County govern-

ment staff researched the county’s noise disclosure rules in response to citizen’s questions. In December, they released a memorandum stating that Form 22W did not contain the language required in the county’s ordinances.

The memorandum stated that Form 22W did not “contain both required disclosure statements, nor cite applicable county code.”

Jason Joiner, government affairs director for the Whidbey Island Association of Realtors, said his membership, once it became aware of this issue, took action to correct the problem.

“We made the change in response to the memorandum,” Joiner said. “We want to be sure that the disclosure is in compliance with the law.”

Updated Form 22W, which was reviewed and approved by the Northwest Multiple Listing Service, pulls language from both of Island County’s noise disclosures, one that applies to existing home sales and the other to new buildings or additions.

The new document provides more detailed information about the jet noise, notifying buyers that “practice sessions are routinely scheduled during day and night periods” and a single flyover “may exceed 100 decibels.”

Emerson said that she believes that District 3 is a “conservative district” and that the constituents will “continue to enjoy conservative representation.”

“I hope that they continue to elect conservative government representation because I think the country will be better off,” Emerson said.

“We can’t afford big government — ­ I hope people are seeing that.”

Hannold made headlines in 2006 when he and his wife, Amy, were the victims of William Dean Adams, a Monroe attorney who was convicted of forging court documents. Hannold was in the process of adopting this wife’s son, Ben, when they result airport noise zones have been identified in the immediate area of Ault Field and OLF Coupeville. Because it is difficult to determine the exact boundaries of the noise zones and where the disclosures are required, Joiner said local brokers will be encouraged to “err on the side of informing.”

The document has been circulated to various agencies, organizations and government groups, Joiner said, adding that the feedback is supportive of the new disclosure.

adoption with another attorney and Judge Alan Hancock made a special visit to their home to complete the paperwork.

“It all came out well,” Hannold said.

Hannold and his wife have two children, Ben, who is now 16, and Grace, 10.

“Anyone concerned about the well-being of people in the noise zones would have thought of that, but no one was concerned,” Gremmel said. “Concern must be turned off to justify ignoring the magnitude of the jet problem.”

Windermere broker who also serves as president of the Oak Harbor Chamber of Commerce, said he believes brokers have issued a disclosure “in 100 percent of our transactions that do state that there is noise from an airport.”

That said, McFayden, “as a broker and a homeowner, I am in favor of disclosing whatever is necessary for a buyer to have the most educated decision when purchasing a home.”

“If the MLS and/or local Realtor associations draft a new disclosure that goes into greater depths of the noise caused by the Navy base and OLF, then we will use it —

as we do with the current noise disclosure — in every transaction we are a part of,” McFayden said.

While the Navy cannot dictate policy for local jurisdictions, it does “recommend a comprehensive and robust disclosure process to inform potential residents about operations that can impact them,” said Mike Welding, NAS Whidbey public affairs officer.

“Additionally,” he said, “officials at NAS Whidbey Island encourage people who are considering the purchase of a home in the local area to contact the base to get complete understanding of operations at Ault Field and OLF Coupeville.”
