After more than month without meeting, the Port Orchard council — with their newest member — took care of several “housekeeping items” along with selecting a new mayor pro-tem during Tuesday night’s meeting. The council has not met since Dec. 10. Bek Ashby, the council’s newest member, took her first action when she requested two items — approval of the minutes from the December meeting and the city’s Comprehensive Plan — from the consent agenda be placed under business items.

Ashby wanted the items under business because she was not present on the council when the action took place. She abstained from voting on the items as the council approved both items. Councilwoman Cindy Lucarelli was voted in as this year’s mayor pro-tem. Councilman John Clauson was nominated for the position, but withdrew his name from consideration. At the Jan. 14 meeting, the council took the following action: • Approved contract with KPFF Consulting Engineers for the Lund Avenue Bridge program management program. Public Works Director Mark Dorsey said this year the bridge — annexed in 2012 — will require inspections, monitoring, maintenance, reporting and overall

GIG HARBOR — New procedures have been implemented to improve court security at the Gig Harbor Municipal Court. Beginning this month, an armed police officer will be screening all individuals entering the courtroom. The detection of prohibited objects will be accomplished by the use of electronic wands, pat-down searches, and bag searches. Purses and briefcases are allowed in the courtroom, but are subject to search. Backpacks are not allowed. Individuals with weapons or other prohibited items will be refused entry and directed to immediately leave the court building. The city asks for the public’s patience during this transition process as some delays may be experienced when entering the courtroom and allow extra time for security searches. The courtroom is located at the Gig Harbor Civic Center, 3510 Grandview St.
