Students screened in ‘Nick of Time’ Students taught how to use AEDs, give CPR

When a student stopped in the Mercer Island High School main office to hand in his registration paperwork for a heart health screening set for the next day, he said that he did not know what the testing was all about. All he knew was his mother said he had to do it.

That’s exactly why the Nick of Time Foundation does this.

adly, it is well known that with holiday cheer comes an increase in rates of impaired driving. Recent high profile crashes connected to alcohol have not only devastated lives but, this time, have also become a catalyst for change.

In efforts to make our roads safer, lawmakers in Olympia recently increased consequences for driving under the influence (DUI). Drunk drivers now face additional penalties such as mandatory ignition interlock devices and automatic vehicle impound. Complicating things, however, has been the legalization of marijuana, which has corresponded to nearly a 50% increase in “stoned” drivers on our roads since January.

Increasing DUI penalties to better fit the crime can help deter would-be drunk drivers. Now, it is not only important that Washingtonians understand these rules also apply to marijuana , but to acknowledge that drugged driving is a problem that needs to be better understood.

The jump in drugged driving rates in Washington is troubling. Of additional concern is that one quarter of those cases are for minors under age 21. While years of public health messaging and focused police enforcement have made it clear to youth and adults alike that, “drinking and driving don’t mix” and, “you don’t have to be buzzed to be busted,” driving under the influence of marijuana now must be given the same attention.

Although it can have the same negative outcomes as drunk driving, marijuana impaired driving is more challenging to educate about than alcohol. The law states that five nanograms of active delta-9-THC per liter of whole blood is the standard for determining impaired driving. However, this level is somewhat arbitrary because every individual is affected by marijuana differently. Chronic users may be less impaired than first time users even after smoking the same amount. The science remains unclear.

Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson says his office is prioritizing as best it can to deal with current and pending legal challenges in the state in the face of a slimmer budget, and he's confident critical issues are being addressed.

In an editorial discussion with Reporter staff Tuesday, Ferguson touted his selection of Nancy Krier as the open government ombudsman for his office. The attorney general said he is also proposing a bill to provide locally elected officials with an online training resource for navigating open records requests within the law.

While some cities like Kirkland are backing budgets that make government accessibility a first-tier service, others are being challenged by

State Transportation Commission to discuss ‘road usage’ charge Today Wednesday Dec. 11, is the second day of a two-day meeting of the Washington State Transportation Commission that will discuss in part, ways to replace the gas tax with a road usage charge system.

Commissioners also will hear a SR 520 toll-

ing update and discuss the future Interstate 405 express toll lanes.

The commission will host a public input process in early 2014 as they work towards setting the toll rates and policies for the express toll lanes by spring 2014.

The commission will consider recommendations developed for the next steps of Washington’s Road Usage Charge Assessment which has been in progress for over a year. The assessment has looked at the feasibility and the business case for a possible road usage charge system in Washington State that could replace the gas tax in the future.

Earlier this fall, the city released a zoning map effectively displaying that nowhere on the Island could entrepreneurs open a marijuana storefront.

Still, as of last Tuesday, Dec. 3, there were two applicants for licenses on the Island—one for production, and the other an application for retail space.

“We’re not that surprised,” said Ross Freeman, communications manager for the city. “Not everybody does their homework.”

Mercer Island had been allotted one storefront, of 334 total proposed for the state. But because the new law prohibits retail within 1,000 feet of child care centers, playgrounds, public parks, transit centers, libraries, schools or recreation centers, nowhere on the Island is zoned to accommodate the retail applicant.

cation would be denied” said Freeman. “It’s possible that the Liquor Control Board would interpret that 1,000 foot buffer differently than we have done on the Island. Still an entrepreneurial spirit pervades.

Freeman said a handful of people had inquired with the city, but once they learned the criteria, didn’t pursue it any further.

The Washington State Liquor Control Board is accepting applications through Dec. 21 and has been updating its applicant list once a week, every Tuesday.

Applicants are not yet required to share an address for their retail location, only personal contact information, so it is unclear where Mercer Island’s applicants intend to locate.

Background checks may also whittle down the list of eligible applicants. Snohomish, Spokane and King counties have had the most thus far. Seattle has received a total of 44 retail bids, but will only be allocated 21 stores.



Monday | 25 MISSING PERSON: A 65-yearold Mercer Island man was reported missing, having disappeared sometime between 9:45 p.m. on Monday night and 12:12 a.m. on Tuesday morning. The patient at Videll Healthcare allegedly has dementia and paranoia.

COLLISION: A vehicle parked in the Starbucks lot blocked the movement of other cars and was narrowly scraped as another car pulled out.

The offending driver claimed there were no visible damages and so left the scene. He was later pulled over not far from the parking lot.

THEFT: Between Nov. 4 and Nov. 25 a graphing calculator, Apple iPhone charger, an iPad and Toshiba laptop computers were stolen from Yellowwood Academy. The losses total more than $3,000 and no suspect has been identified.

THEFT: $18,000 in missing jewelry were reported almost six months after they were allegedly stolen. The six pieces of gold and diamond jewelry were assumed to be in the family safe but when the daughter of the Mercer Island resident, who uses the same housekeeper, also noticed missing jewelry, the family reported the crime. In the first half of 2013, 27% of all impaired driving cases in Washington tested positive for THC (up from 19% in 2012). Although waiting at least four hours to drive after smoking marijuana (longer for edibles) is recommended by some, the best advice this holiday season may be to simply not drink or smoke and drive.

School briefs Sayers honored as ‘Hero in the Classroom’

Symetra and the Seattle Seahawks honored Mercer Island High School teacher Jan Sayers as a “Symetra Hero in the Classroom” during a classroom presentation Dec. 6 at Mercer Island High School. Sayers, who teaches English, A p p l i e d - Te c h n i c a l Communications and Business Law, was recognized by students and peers at a surprise presentation. She received a $1,000 donation for classroom books and supplies.

“Ms. Sayers is a dedicated teacher who cares deeply about each of her students,” said MIHS Principal Vicki Puckett in a press release. “She not only teaches them pertinent knowledge for their future beyond school but she also teaches them life lessons and what matters most in life.”

Bobbie Stern, a grandparent of several of Sayers’ students, nominated the teacher for the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom award.

“Four of my grandchildren have had Jan as their

honors English teacher at Mercer Island High School, and her extraordinary influence has affected them academically as well as personally,” said Stern.

Sayers is one of 16 K–12 teachers in the Puget Sound area who will be honored for educational excellence in the Symetra Heroes in the Classroom program during the 2013 NFL season. Sayers will be recognized at the Dec. 22 Seahawks game.

Students selected for All-State Orchestra Six Mercer Island orchestra students will perform as part of the All-State Orchestra at the Washington Music Educators Association state conference in Yakima, Wash., on Feb. 16.

“All of this is a very big deal,” said Mercer Island orchestra teacher Vicki White-M. “Mercer Island may have placed more students in the honor groups than any other high school in the state.”

‘Hour of code’ at school district this week As part of Computer Science Education Week, the Mercer Island School District will participate in ‘Hour of Code’, a program to encourage coding and computer science access and instruction.

Preparing students for a digital economy is a core piece of the district’s Vision 2020 that drives the instructional program.

That includes preparing students for potential careers in science, technology, engineering and math

(STEM). “The idea here is that exposure to code, and empowering students to create code, will give them insights on how computers and programs work and inspire them to engage in computer science learning with confidence,” said Gary Barone, who teaches a video game programming class at Islander Middle School.

Code.org projects that by 2020, there will be 1 million more jobs in computer science than there are computer science students in the United States.

Early morning water pipe break at high school Due to extremely cold temperatures, last Thursday, morning, water a pipe broke in the Mercer Island High School kitchen just before 8 a.m. The fire alarm sounded and the fire department arrived within minutes.

Students, staff and visitors were evacuated. There were no complications and the situation was resolved.

Everyone returned safely to the building.

Apodaca, who was Varrenti’s aunt, said Nick of Time has screened 9,400 kids in three years, finding about 300 with abnormalities.

Studies vary on the actual incidence and risk of SCA in young adults and children. All studies agree that the risk of sudden cardiac arrest and death among youth is extremely low. Some studies indicate that majority of cases of SCA is caused by underlying heart conditions, yet there is no formal accounting of these types of deaths in youth. However, other studies suggest that with or without existing cardiac problems, the risk for athletes is greater.

Apodaca said there is a three-year waiting list for the Nick of Time Foundation to visit schools, and that the foundation came to Mercer Island at the request of Mercer Island resident Eric Rothenberg, who contacted Nick of Time back in 2010.

Rothenberg is a survivor of SCA. He was 42 years old when he collapsed at the Mercer Island Community Center in 2009 while playing tennis. Two

MICC members, both of whom happened to be doctors, responded quickly.

Dr. Alan Geltzer and Dr. Niraj Patel administered CPR and were able to use the MICC defibrillator to jumpstart Rothenberg’s heart while waiting for the EMT team to arrive.

The foundation’s team of physicians and volunteers screened 218 people Wednesday at MIHS, finding seven students who needed follow-up based on their findings.

It’s not a law in Washington to have defibrillators in schools, something for which the foundation has lobbied. While Mercer Island schools have AEDS, Apodaca said about half of all schools don’t have defibrillators.

Experts say that having an AED nearby is crucial toward saving an SCA victim’s life. For each minute that goes by without defibrillation, a cardiac arrest victim’s survival rate decreases by 10 percent.

“It’s vital for everyone to know CPR and to have AEDs in public places,” said Apodaca. “Parents can make sure schools have defibrillators, and [make sure] their kids are trained to perform CPR in case of emergency, and they get their child’s heart screened.”

Help Stem Hunger during the Holidays D

ecember marks the second month of QFC’s annual charitable giving program, Bringing Hope to the Table, to raise cash and food donations for hungry people in the Northwest. This program began at QFC in 2002 and benefits two outstanding non-profit organizations that are working to end hunger in the northwest, Food Lifeline in the Seattle area and the Oregon Food Bank in the Portland area. Between them, these organizations distribute food to hundreds of food banks, meal programs and shelters every week.

In the course of a year Food Lifeline will distribute over 36 million pounds of food, or more than 30 million meals, to over 744,000 people.

“Due to the continued recession and long-term unemployment, the number of hungry people in our communities continues to grow, but QFC customers are making a difference!” notes Amy Shipman, Grocery Rescue Program Manager at Food Lifeline. “During the winter months, many families make the tough decision to pay the heat bill or buy food for the table. Bringing Hope to the Table makes sure that families

have enough to eat beyond the holidays and whenever there is need.”

According to Food Lifeline, “the very low income people that food banks and meal programs have traditionally served still have tremendous need and represent 53% of the people who seek food assistance in Western Washington.” Of the clients that Food Lifeline serves, 35% are children and 14% are seniors. Oregon Food Bank reports similar numbers. Children age 17 or younger make up 34% of the recipients in the households served by OFB and adults 55 and above account for 18% of their clientele.

The donations that QFC collects during this two month period will help feed hungry people for several months to come. Food donations typically drop in quantity after the holidays, so the surplus donations collected now will help fill the gap until donations pick up in mid to late spring. Your cash donations are also vital to keeping the food collection and distribution operations going. They help pay operating expenses to keep the freezers running and the trucks on the road.

Islanders beat Sammamish, Inglemoor

Following their first conference win of the season, the Mercer Island boys basketball team beat Inglemoor 50-46 in a nonconference game Saturday, Dec. 7 at Inglemoor High School. With the win, the Islanders improved to 3-0 overall on the year.

The Islanders got off to a slow start against the Vikings, finding themselves trailing Inglemoor 16-8 after the first quarter and 30-21 at halftime. But Mercer Island responded with a strong second half, cutting the deficit to five by the end of the third quarter and storming back with 15-6 run in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. Gabe Boucad led the Islanders in scoring with 14 points while adding 2 steals. Senior captain Chris Lawler had 13 points, while the other senior captain, Jake Stenberg, had 7 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and

Boys swim wins over Roosevelt

The Mercer Island High School boys swim and dive team won their first meet of the season against Roosevelt High School 127-50 Thursday, Dec. 5 at Mary Wayte Pool.

Mercer Island finished in the top three spots for the 200 yard medley relay. The group of Austin Ralph, Duncan Koontz, Noah Deiparine and Ian Caldwell won with a time of 1:44.41. In second was the relay team of Tanner Martinez, Karl MacLane, Andrew Fukuda and David Conger with a time of 1:47.68. Coming in third was the team of Jack Larkin, Benjamin Stoops, Ben Simontov and Matthew Hanson with a

time of 1:51.62.

Sophomore Ben Gore won the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.53.

Chris Apodaca finished third with a time of 1:54.31, and Nick Swaya finished fourth with a time of 1:58.78.

Senior captain Noah Deiparine won the 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:00.80.

Tanner Martinez finished third with a time of 2:10.58, and Ian Caldwell finished fourth with a time of 2:11.35.

Senior captain Karl MacLane won the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 23.33. Matthew Hanson was right behind him with a time of 23.46 to take second place, and Austin Ralph finished third with a time of 23.76.

Wrestlers pin 14 at ‘Clash’ tournament

The Mercer Island High School wrestling team earned a couple of victories Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Clash of the Classes tournament at Skyline High School.

The Islanders beat Eastlake 42-24 and Newport 54-30 while falling to Issaquah 31-30 and Skyline 52-28, bringing their record to 4-2 on the year.

The Islanders collected 14 pins throughout the tournament, with junior Luke Wilson pinning all four of his opponents. Against Eastlake, the Wolves' Martin Miller pinned Kevin Pedersen to win the 113 match. Taylan Yuasa won the 120 match by forfeit, and Luke Wilson pinned Kushan Jobanputra to win the 126 match. Trevor Gullstad won the 132 match by forfeit, Jake Pruchno pinned

It was a close affair in the first half, as both teams exchanged the lead before heading into halftime with the Islanders down 30-28. Mercer Island came out strong in the second half, closing the third quarter ahead 42-39 and never looked back.

Senior captain Chris Lawler led the Islanders in scoring against the Totems with 14 points, and Andrew Pickles added 8 points.

As long as you access Indiebound through the portal on your local bookstore’s web site (this works for participating Indie bookstores, including Island Books), 8- to 10-percent of the proceeds go to your local store. It’s not a huge financial boon, but every little bit helps.

The Indiebound e-books work on all devices except Kindle, which have been designed to work exclusively for Amazon e-books. Every month, it seems, the e-book alternatives are expanding. Library books can be borrowed via download onto your e-reader. And there are even apps making it possible to download e-books onto mobile phones.

While I’ve taken the plunge into e-books, I continue to purchase old-fashioned paper books. Mainly, I use my e-reader for travel and publications available in digital format only. The upshot of it all: I’m reading even more.

Some other ideas: 1. Tires and four wheel drive As stated above, if your car doesn’t have good winter tires you’re basically a liability to yourself and everyone else on the road. Four-wheel drive is a great feature, but without proper rubber that just means you’ll have four tires spinning instead of two. Also, sour wheel drive vehicles do not stop or steer better on ice.

2. Safe following distance This is one you might not even think about until it is too late, but it takes a vehicle a lot longer to stop on snowy, icy roads. Allow at least four seconds of time and space between your vehicle and the one in front of you. It is suggested to use your headlights day and night.

3. Slow down This is another no-brainer. For sure, you’re excited to get to your destination but speed and slick roads do not mix. There are speed limit signs all over the place — pay attention and err on the side of caution. Slow down when approaching intersections, offramps, bridges, or shady spots. Drive for the conditions; slower speed, slower acceleration, and avoid using cruise control.

4. Passing lanes When the highway has two lanes going the same direction, the right lane should be for regular driving and the left one for passing. Don’t just sit out there in the left lane unless you are overtaking another vehicle. This rule is important because driving in the incorrect lane irritates other drivers and leads to unsafe actions like passing on the inside or following too closely.

5. Know what to expect Check the WSDOT website for current road conditions; if it looks dicey, consider crossing the mountain passes in daylight, or delay your departure.

6. Avoid sudden moves Sudden braking or accelerating can cause skids and slides, as can sudden swerves. There is a Zen to good winter driving and it all hinges on great situational awareness and intelligent foresight. Basically you need to be a road ninja who can foresee problems before they arise and take action before it’s too late.

7. Snowplows are enormous Snowplows make the roads safer but they are also giant beasts of metal with huge blades on the front. Try not to get too close to them and never pass a snowplow on the right hand side because that is the direction the snow is pushed. If you can read the giant sign that says “Don’t Follow Too Closely,” that means you’re probably following too closely.

Greater Seattle Sephardic community celebrates International Ladino Day Islanders young and old seek to retain history and culture

Hundreds of Sephardic Jews from Seattle and the Eastside celebrated the world’s first International Ladino Day at the University of Washington Hillel house last Thursday, Dec. 5.

The event featured songs and poetry readings by members of the Sephardic community, presentations from professors in UW’s newly minted Sephardic Studies program and, of course, plenty of traditional nosh -- think baklava and other sweets.

Sephardic Jews trace their origins back to preInquisition Iberia and the Spanish diaspora throughout modern-day Turkey and Greece (“Sepharadad” means “Spain” in modern Hebrew). They spoke

Ladino, a Romance language that combines medieval Spanish with Hebrew.

International Ladino Day was created last month to honor the endangered language and traditions of this cultural minority group. Each year, the globally recognized holiday will fall on the last night of Hanukkah.

UW Jewish Studies Professor Divan Naar, who hosted the event, said it’s something “we’ve been awaiting for more than 500 years.

“This is the first time we’ve ever celebrated the Ladino legacy,” he said.

“And what better spot to do it than in Seattle -- one of the largest, most robust Sephardic communities in the world, and one of the last places on Earth where people still speak the language.”

But he said events like Thursday’s – which united members of the Sephardic diaspora to celebrate shared traditions and speak socially in the language – have the power to bring Ladino back from the brink of extinction.

“If Ladino is going to have a future, it will have to start with live interactions like these,” he said, referring to everyone who stayed after the event to chat in Ladino over plates of pastries.

“It will have to start with storytelling, real conversations and jokes,” he said.

CIRULATION MANAGER - KIRKLAND Sound Publishing, Inc. is currently accepting applications for a Circulation Manager at the Kirkland and Bothell/Kenmore Reporters.

The primary duty of a Circulation Manager (CM) is to manage a geographic district. The CM will be accountable for the assigned newspaper as follows: Recruiting, contracting and training independent contractors to meet delivery deadlines, insuring delivery standards are being met and quality customer service. Position requires the ability to operate a motor vehicle in a safe manner; to occasionally lift and/or transport bundles weighing up to 25 pounds from ground level to a height of 3 feet; to deliver newspaper routes, including ability to negotiate stairs and to deliver an average of 75 newspapers per hour for up to 8 consecutive hours; to communicate with carriers and the public by telephone and in person; to operate a personal computer. Must possess reliable, insured, motor vehicle and a valid Washington State driver’s license.
