are destroying the fiber of this country. We, the people, have let our so-called representatives run wild and as a result what we have today is a blatant battle for power between the two major “political parties” who will do or say anything to remain in their positions. They are disgustingly open about what they want, that being your vote in return for their support of your special interest group or your so called entitlement. We have let them mortgage our country to the tune of over $17 trillion and counting and, more recently, we have been brutally attacked domestically more than I care to remember in my 59 years of life. Remember 9/11 or have you forgotten? In a word, they have failed us miserably. To sum this up, we are “asleep at the switch” people and it’s only going to get worse unless we all start paying attention to what our representatives are doing in our name. Politics and political parties should be abolished. Clearly, government

does not function in the presence of either. I could care less about political parties — just do the job you were hired to do. Protect us and let us live our lives. We can make our own choices about what size soft drink we should have or which health plan we want, if any. Sincerely, ROBERT STALLONE Freeland

Pot moratorium is poor government Editor, According to the Washington State Liquor Control Board, if the Island County Board of Commissioners approves a moratorium for six months, it will not affect licensing and applications. What the moratorium will do is force investors to spend thousands on application fees while a handful of people decide if they personally want this business in Island County. A six-month moratorium will essentially double license fees for anyone applying in Island County because license fees are due upon approval of the license, Jan. 1, regardless of any 15 th year!

moratorium. The current set of laws force Island County residents to purchase marijuana through organized crime networks. Many of these same networks supply heroin, meth, and other synthetic drugs. Island County marijuana users are currently funneling $2 million to $3 million dollars a month to these cartels and networks. A moratorium of six months will push this new industry out of the county along with the jobs and economic stimulus that goes with it. At the risk of sounding like a conspiracy nut, when pubic officials side with the interests of organized crime someone needs to investigate those people. JON YOUNGBLOOD Oak Harbor

ducing team and I came to Whidbey to put together the plan and build the infrastructure for the feature film “Lost & Found.” But, in reality, the planning and the building began many years earlier. When I started writing the script for this film, I always had Whidbey in my mind and heart. Whidbey is majestic yet quaint, mysterious yet glorious. But always, Whidbey is special. I have always been passionate about my hometown of Whidbey Island. For most of my life, it has been my singular mission to make this movie. It was a dream come true, in early September 2013, when we finally had enough pieces together to take the next step. Along with my dedicated producers, Scott Bridges and Kim Selby, and my amazing sister Grace Itaya, we left our families and our day-to-day lives, and drove the 1,100 miles from Los Angeles, Calif., to Whidbey. Just as I knew it would,

magic happened every day as our community rallied to make this beautiful story come to life. But, as often happens when mountains are ascended or spacecrafts are launched, certain elements of weather or timing can alter the plan. For independent filmmakers, many gears have to lock into place at just the right time in order to make a film shoot viable. There are many elements of cast, crew, locations, financing and a thousand other variables, that all must come together at exactly the same time. In our case, we had key actors who – for a variety of professional and personal reasons – were not able to meet the needs of our schedule. But like the song says, “God blesses the broken road.” I have learned to trust the process and row with the current. And that’s

what we are doing; we are rowing, determined and diligent as ever. The film is re-calibrating while we change gears and re-load. There have been incredible friends along the way who have been allies in every sense of the word. Extra special thanks to Coupeville Mayor Nancy Conard, Sherrye Wyatt, Lindy Kortus, L ynda Eccles, Robyn Myers, Dan Currier, Paul Ware, Ron Nelson, Jenny Barrett, Mark Saia and my parents Joe and Beth Itaya. On behalf of the entire Lost & Found team, I thank you with all my heart for your support, well wishes, and love. The best is yet to come. JOSEPH ITAYA Los Angeles
