Elton Ray Goodwin September 18, 1950 - November 7, 2013

Elton Ray Goodwin was born September 18, 1950 in Independence, Missouri; and passed away on November 7, 2013 in Gig Harbor. Born the second of four boys to Arnold Lee and Helen Louise Goodwin, he moved to Port Orchard at the age of one. Elton attended South Colby Elementary, Marcus Whitman Jr. High; and was a 1969 graduate of South Kitsap High School. After high school he went on to attend Olympic Community College, and later Central Washington University; graduating in 1973 with a degree in secondary education. Earning letters in football, basketball and baseball throughout his high school and college playing days; it was baseball and teaching for which he forged a lifelong passion that not even retirement could curtail. Not limiting his interests to athletics however, Elton held a lifelong affinity with the woods and streams of our Pacific Northwest. Laying siege to salmon, halibut and ducks with the same fervor and intensity as an opposing pitcher, it was just as common to see Elton walking the woods or relaxing around the campfire; as it was on the baseball diamond. Whether packing a shotgun, chainsaw, fishing pole, or baseball bat; you could bet there was a smile on his face, and a good story to accompany it. Elton was a friend, coach and mentor to many; and the legacy he left will be felt throughout this community for generations to come. Serving as an example for countless young men and women, he retired from the South Kitsap School District after 30 years as a coach and educator. His attention to fundamentals, and a commitment to perfectionism however, instilled ‘life lessons’ in his students, players and peers that fostered relationships that will remain eternal. As seasons come to pass, never will we forget the (now iconic) sayings that emanated from the 3rd base coaches box. Timeless words of encouragement such as “TRACK IT”, “FRAME IT UP”; “SEE THE V”; or “NUT IT UP” will forever be etched in the minds of our boys, that he molded to men. 491 wins / 29 years coaching / 19 League Championships / 3 State titles / 1997 Washington State Baseball HOF inductee “Swing away Coach...you will forever be missed by those you touched.” Elton is survived by his wife, Debbie; twin sons Jeff and Joel; brothers Arlond (Sharon), Billy (Teri), Aaron (Lynn); step-father Damon “Sonny” Bracamontes; stepdaughters Dawn White (Mike) and Angie Howie (Shawn); grandchildren, Tyler and Cameron White, and Alyssia and Damien Howie; and numerous nieces and nephews. Schedule: Friday 11/15 6-9pm - Public visitation at Rill Chapel (family will be on hand to greet the community) Saturday 11/16 11am - Public services at South Kitsap High School auditorium *Elton’s impact throughout this community was far reaching, and we encourage anyone who would like to bring a photo of Elton to share on the photo board to do so. This board will be present at both Rill Chapel on Friday, and the High School on Saturday. We will do our best to get everyone’s pictures back to them, but it is suggested a copy be made ahead of time. **We ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in the name of the GOODWIN MEMORIAL FUND at any Kitsap Bank branch. Wolves close out season with convincing victory over Foss DeWalt rushes for three touchdowns in 41-25 victory against Foss

fourth quarter on a 6-yard touchdown run by senior Randy Macalino. Moore capped the scoring with 43- and 33-yard touchdown passes to senior Nick Burton and junior Chris “Scooby” Reynolds, respectively. While Canton hoped to finish the season in the playoffs, he was pleased to see his seniors end the season with a positive outcome. “It’s always tough when it’s over,” he said. “I want to thank the seniors for everything they’ve given. I wish them the best of luck.”

TACOMA — It might as well have been the same game plan of the last three decades against Foss. Run left, right and up the middle. Whatever direction the Wolves chose was successful as they closed out their season with a 41-25 win Friday against the Falcons at Mount Tahoma High School. “Up front in the trenches, the kids did a very nice job,” South coach Eric Canton said. “We pretty much were able to run any sort of play we wanted to in between the tackles. That’s just a credit to the linemen.” The outcome of the first game between the schools since 2008 rarely was in doubt beyond the first quarter. The Falcons (6-4) took advantage of a fumble recovery to set up a 14-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback John Moore to junior wide receiver Mike Cock’e that gave them a 6-0 lead with 5:56 minutes left in the first quarter. It was Foss’ only advantage of the game. South (4-6), which suffered just its third losing season since 1977, scored 21 unanswered points to close out the opening period. A 21-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Cooper Canton to senior wide receiver Dylan Garcia was sandwiched by 1- and 13-yard touchdown runs by backup signal-caller Michael Fitch and running back Marshaud DeWalt, respectively. The teams then traded scores in the second quarter as Moore scored on an 11-yard run and DeWalt, a

DeWalt then effectively ended any hope of the Falcons beating South for the first time since 1979 when he scored on a 3-yard run with 8:26 remaining in the third quarter to extend his team’s lead to 34-12. The Wolves now have won 23 consecutive games against Foss.

“I’m proud of our kids,” Canton said. “We went through some adversity last week [against Central Kitsap] and we bounced back. We played well and with a lot of emotion. It was nice to see.” DeWalt, who rushed for 125 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries, and several other starters departed after that score. Despite that, South extended its lead to as much as 41-12 early in the

for first place, lost two games and put ourselves on a pretty hard road.” The Wolves needed two victories at districts to advance to state for the first time since 2011. That also marked the last time they won at districts.

“We’ve been to the playoffs every year,” Cain said. “This is the toughest first game we’ve had. You hope to meet a team like this a little deeper.”
