County readies $53M budget

Everything you want to know about San Juan County government and the proposed 2014 budget can be found in 153 pages of the county preliminary budget document prepared for the County Council by Auditor Milene Henley.

These documents, which will be revised when the County Council approves the budget after a series of public hearings over the next several weeks, can be found at http:// sanjuanco.com/Budget2014/ docs/2014Preliminar y_ Budget_Book_Complete.pdf.

Everything, that is, except the “Non-General Fund” budget, which totals $32,987,817 - more than half of the total county budget of $53,326,315. The “NonGeneral Fund” accounts apply to certain dedicated funds which have their own sources of revenue, including dedicated taxes, grants from various sources, intergovernmental transfers, fees and other sources. These receipts and expenditures will be included in the final budget documents.

Unlicensed, illegally moored and poorly maintained, nearly a dozen smaller-sized docks and floats will be hauled out of Friday Harbor and out of Orcas Island’s Deer Harbor beginning in midNovember.

The floating structures, in addition to being unauthorized, will be removed in an effort to improve navigation and ensure environmental protection, and before they

Gordy Petersen, owner of Friday Harbor Center, at the intersection of First and Spring streets, and CBP public information officer Chief Thomas Schreiber each confirmed that a lease has been signed and that CBP would relocate from its office at the Port of Friday Harbor “in 2014.”

Petersen anticipates CBP will be operating in the street-level office space by “mid-summer.” The lease, which the General Services Administration says was awarded “after a full and open competition” in August, 2013, is for ten years, with an option for an additional five years.

The 10-year total value for rentals, tenant improvements, building services and six parking spaces is $2,124,095.20, according to Stephanie Kenitzer of the U.S. General Services Administration. The details of the layout and materials was not publicly disclosed “for security reasons” by the GSA, which is the property management agency

REQUEST FOR PROPOSALS Branding and Tourism Plan Phase One The Town has recently updated its Vision Statement and is in need of a new logo and brand statement which will then drive many of the decisions over the next several years relating to marketing, signage and Lodging Tax expenditures.

Development Summit, sponsored by the Economic Development Council, will bring community and industry leaders together to discuss improving the economy of the county, including brainstorming immediately achievable goals and projects.

The event will explore the county’s economy as it is now and as the community might wish to see it in the future. Segments will include an economic snapshot of the county, asset mapping, and the Port of Friday Harbor’s role in economic development.

San Juan County has many industries. Small manufacturers, construction, tourism, cottage industries, professional services, consulting, and agriculture are among the industries included in Washington State economic reports.

The summit will explore which industries are doing well, which are likely to grow and what actions can be taken to spur growth and employment.

Local inventor to lead WordPress EDC workshop

Council presents a 2.5hour workshop on building a website or blog using WordPress – an ideal platform for new businesses and organizations.

The workshop will be held at the San Juan Island Library’s community room Tuesday, Nov. 12, 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The course will be presented by Bryan Hoyer, who built his first website in 1995 after realizing the World Wide Web would change the way we promote and inform ourselves. Hoyer is an inventor and entrepreneur who spent 25 years in silicon valley before moving to the islands in 2007.

Participants will learn the fundamentals of producing a website or blog using the WordPress personal publishing system. Each participant will leave the class with a live site up on the web.

lsland engineer plots lunar orbit NASA’s Lunar At mosphere and Dust Environment Explorer was able to get from the launching pad, Sept. 6, to its lunar commissioning orbit five weeks later, Oct. 13, thanks in large part to Friday Harbor’s Mike Loucks.

O w n e r of Friday Harbor-based Space Exploration Engineering Corporation, Loucks designed and helped implement the trajectory used to send the Environment Explorer into orbit. He designed the trans-lunar and lunar orbit capture portion of LADEE’s trajectory.

He was on-site at the NASA/Ames control center from launch on Sept 6, through the final lunar orbit insertion maneuver on Oct. 13, and served as trajectory lead and flight dynamics team member during that time.

Loucks also designed the trajectories for the Interstellar Boundary Explorer Mission, launched in 2008, and the Orbview-II spacecraft, which launched in 1997.

The Space Exploration Engineering Corporation was founded in 1995 in Boulder, Colo. Loucks moved the company and his family to Friday Harbor in 2001.

The progress of the LADEE spacecraft along its trajectory was chronicled by Loucks and fellow “astro-gator” John Carrico during the trans-lunar portion of the mission on the “Astrogator’s Guild” blog (www.astrogatorsguild. com). The two were featured in an Oct. 8 article in the Christian Science Monitor, “Moon mission LADEE arrives after an ‘amazingly precise’ looping flight,” written by Liz Fuller-Wright and appearing in the online version of the publication.

LADEE (pronounced like “laddie”) is a robotic mission designed to orbit the moon and to gather detailed information about lunar atmosphere, conditions near the surface and environmental influences on lunar dust. It also carries an innovative lunar laser communication demonstration instrument, which is designed to transmit data at a rate of 622 megabits per second, about five times the current state-of-the-art from lunar distances. LADEE is managed by NASA’s Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif.

After the commissioning phase of the mission, which lasts one month, LADEE will be lowered to its science orbit with an average altitude below 50 km (31 miles).

LADEE will spend three months at this lower altitude, and will then be directed to lunar impact after it runs out of fuel.

Town preps for water line replacement

The Town of Friday Harbor will begin replacing portions of its aging water and sewer main on Spring Street starting in January.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of March.

Details of the project will be aired at an informational meeting, Wednesday, beginning at 1 p.m., at town hall.

The pending project is intended to prevent another break in the water main like the one that happened a year ago in September. A new water main was installed from First to Second streets following the break but that project proved disruptive to many and raised concerns about muddy water entering the storm drains, according to town officials.

The town also plans to replace sewer mains and to remedy as many known deficiencies as possible in

O’Conner said the port has had no communication from CBP about terminating or renewing the current lease.

Friday Harbor Center was built by Petersen in 2004, after fire leveled most of the east side of First St., between Spring and East streets. Peterson said total rebuild of the block, which comprises 24,000 square feet of commercial space, cost roughly $3.8 million.

Windermere Realty occupied the space until 2010 at a lease rate “in the range of $8,000 to $10,000 per month,” according to Windermere’s Gary Franklin. Petersen declined to identify the amount that CBP would pay, although he termed the figure mentioned above as “incorrect.”

Howard Crowell and Rebecca Hughes opened Howard’s Sell It Again in the space in early 2011, at a reduced rent with the understanding that they might be displaced if a full-paying tenant agreed to lease the space. Crowell said they were pleased with the location and the support of both visitors and locals, but he “understood completely” that their tenancy would be terminated if Petersen found a long-term, full-paying tenant.

O’Conner said it’s unclear whether CBP intends to retain office space at the port.

She said the port has been discussing with CBP its requirements for space at the airport.

In addition to inspections and security duties in Friday Harbor, Customs and Border Patrol agents are assigned to Roche Harbor to check and clear boats arriving from Canada, and operate a small kiosk at the Friday Harbor marina for boat and seaplane arrivals.

The department began the process of taking ownership of the unauthorized floats and docks Sept. 26, posting notices of pending seizure of the property. It followed up with a second notice Oct. 16, and will take custody of each Nov. 15, unless someone comes forward before before then to claim ownership and remove a floating object and anchors.

In cases in which an owner has been identified, Treadwell said DNR will seek reimbursement for costs of removal and disposal of the object, its anchoring system and related debris.

Deputy auditor to join school district Domenech takes business manager post after 11 years with county

The preliminary budget for 2014 represents a decrease of about $1 million from the all-funds estimated 2013 total expenditures, although final 2013 expenditures won’t be available for several months. Because tax and grant receipts will vary through 2014, some supplemental and emergency appropriations may still be made by the council as the year progresses.

The preliminary budget document reviews all county departments and agencies and includes extensive documentation of departmental functions, personnel and activities. For instance, County Council projected expenditures of about $493,000 is about $24,000 less than 2013, possibly reflecting the recent charter amend-

After 11 years with San Juan County, Chief Deputy County Auditor José Domenech announced that he has accepted the position of Business Manager for the Friday Harbor School District.

In 1999, Domenech brought a degree in Business Administration and a background ranging from café manager to supply corps officer in the U.S. Navy to San Juan County. After managing a bed and breakfast on San Juan Island, he was hired by the County Prosecutor as temporary law and justice assistant in 2002, then began work in the Auditor’s office the following year. He was named Chief Deputy County Auditor and Accounting Supervisor in 2007.

The San Juan County Council formally thanked Domenech for his service at its Monday, Oct. 14 session.

But why in the center of town?

At a recent Friday Harbor Town Council meeting, I was astounded to hear a brief statement from a council member that the U.S. Homeland Security Agency is planning to open a large office in the former Windermere building at the corner of First and Spring streets.

The reaction in the council chambers was as though someone had thrown a dead fish on the table. P.U. I have been very impressed with the council’s recent approach to building up the town economy: a long term redesign of Sunshine Alley; closer cooperation with the Port to make the ferry dock entrance to the town more pedestrian friendly; the welcoming banners and ever more beautiful hanging baskets around town.

But a big Homeland Security office in the very center of town?

I hope the town will now put some questions on the table and bring the community together to seek some answers: Why does Homeland Security need to expand their base of operations here? Will there be holding cells; armed and uniformed officials guarding the doors on that corner? Why must this be at the very center of the Friday Harbor tourist area?

I will look forward to the council involving all islanders soon in a public discussion of the many the issues surrounding this possibility.

Cartoon misses mark on farm tax

The cartoon on page 6 of the Oct. 30 edition of the Journal is an inaccurate representation of the Assessor’s office’s efforts to maintain a fair and equitable system of property taxation.

This office has been and continues to be supportive of farmers and farmland owners. However, when enrolled farmland is not in compliance with program requirements, taxes are unfairly shifted to other property owners.

Island farmers that are commercially farming land as defined under Washington’s Open Space Taxation Act have no reason to fear that they will lose their special tax status. A more appropriate and accurate label on the cartoon farmer would be “Hobby Farms”.

My hat’s off to those who help

Two more raves for fabulous people in our community.

Rick Campbell pulled me out of a very precarious position… with genius, sensitivity, kindness and patience.

My red truck got stuck in a ditch and I tried myself to get it out, making it worse. I called AAA and All Seasons Towing arrived.

Scott, the helper, knew he needed the expert, and Rick came on his white shining horse. He deserves to be celebrated.

I watched Linda, at Vic’s Drive-In, talk to a little child, putting his name on “the order,” making him feel special, and every time I go she is genuinely making everyone feel special, happy and important.

Kevin’s big smile definitely adds to the mix. Not only is the food good, Linda and Kevin make you feel good.

Move is a poor fit for Friday Harbor

The Oct. 15, 2013 edition of The Island Guardian and the Oct. 30, 2013 San Juan Journal (New lease puts U.S. Customs office in heart of downtown Friday Harbor) announce Customs is leasing the large commercial Spring Street storefront (previously the Windermere Real Estate office) in downtown Friday Harbor complete with “holding cells, state of the art communication with major remodeling and interior construction…”

The landlord of the property retorts, “This is good for the town and good for the nation. These people are our neighbors. They are protecting our community and people should respect that.”

Frankly, Mr. Landlord, what makes you think we do not?

However, placement of this essential, necessary and quasi-reclusive federal agency requiring some level of operational concealment and security in a commercial corridor of a small town dependent on tourism and positive image seems irrational.

Furthermore, doing so will require every resident and tourist to pass it each and every time they visit or return home. Frankly, who would want to shop, dine or browse shops in an area next to a federal office with a jail?

This federal agency is our new “Welcome Center”?

Worse yet, I imagine refitting a decade old plus commercial building to standards of a modern law enforcement facility is immense. Security is necessary for protection of everyone.

a clear and present threat to any public area regardless of massive security precautions (see Boston Marathon), is placement of this facility in the center of Spring Street painting a target on or about the epicenter of tourist and commercial activity for the entire county?

I fully support and respect the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the work they do to keep us all safe. I want to feel safe and I want border protection and customs staff to be safe.

I want them here and we all need them here. I just wish they were a little more discrete.

Try home for Superior service gets short shrift favorites in medical air transport the holidays Playing decisions could put islanders in jeopardy

hopping near home, away from the crowds, is the surest way to make this the best holiday season ever.

We’re well aware that for many islanders, holiday shopping means hours trekking off-island in search of the deepest discount for the perfect gift for a spouse, sibling or grandchild who probably already has, or will soon have, more than enough “perfect presents” to last a lifetime.

We suggest foregoing that trek and spending your time—and money—at any of our island shops that are sure to welcome you with a big smile, a unique selection of goods at reasonable prices, and possibly even some holiday music you haven’t heard too many times before.

While we’re making suggestions, perhaps you local merchants will make the extra effort to provide that big smile, and convenient extra shopping hours and the homey decorations that people love.

And don’t forget a few “on sale” tags to show people you appreciate their patronage.

A

ny of us can be felled by a stroke, accident, coronary or other life-threatening emergency in which our potential survival diminishes with each second spent en route to urgent medical care.

That’s why we have a nation full of medievac helicopter services—because seconds count.

When you live on an island the stakes are even higher. As Harborview’s Chief of Surgery, Dr. Ron Maier, stated last year, author Richard Bach would not have survived his 2012 plane crash on San Juan Island without Airlift Northwest’s immediate helicopter response with a flying emergency room equipped with the two highly-trained nurses who kept him alive until landing on Harborview’s helipad.

Decades back only single-engine aircraft were available in a medical emergency to try to reach Seattle or Bellingham in time. But the delays and the trauma of transfers in and out of ambulances, to and from the single-engine aircraft and the airports on each end took a heavy toll, and no one will ever know exactly how many didn’t make it because the time en route was just too great. That’s why we needed a 24-hour standby helicopter airevac service, and the one we finally got—Airlift Northwest—is world class.

A few years ago, the creation of Island Air Ambulance in conjunction with San Juan EMS and the hospital district seemed to assure that an airport-to-airport backup would always be available for those frustrating times when not even the best equipped helicopter can make it through the weather. But there was never any question that singleengine airplanes were grossly inferior to both well-equipped choppers, and the twin engine anti-iced turbo commander Airlift has standing by as well (a fixed wing flying emergency room San Juan EMS apparently refuses to use).

Somewhere along the way, however—whether motivated by empire building or something more worrisome—the individuals promoting Island Air Ambulance decided to stop being a legitimate backup and instead arranged to divert to themselves as much of Airlift Northwest’s primary emergency runs as they could grab.

In the process, they’ve dumped a significant amount of public money into a structurally inferior service in a selfcongratulatory effort that has included grossly misleading

propaganda pieces passing for Op/eds in this paper, Op/ eds falsely and absurdly suggesting their backup service is the same, or even superior to Airlift. In addition, these folks have carefully omitted the fact that Island Air Ambulance charges your insurance company as much if not more than Airlift Northwest ($12,500 by their own listing with the trade association CAMTS). Where, exactly, is that river of money going?

The very volume of emergency airlifts now routinely assigned by San Juan EMS to Island Air Ambulance in what smells very much like a sweetheart deal clearly shows an inordinate bias with no accountability: almost 2/3rds are flown in Island Air’s lone single-engine Cessna 207.

Further, now that this dirty little secret is out, there are island residents coming forward indignantly to relate how they were told that Airlift was not available, when in fact a helicopter and crew were ready to fly.

Clearly this highly suspicious systemic diversion to an inferior service is not in the best interests of the people of this county. In fact, everyone who lives in or spends time in the San Juans needs to pay serious attention to the consequences of the grotesque overgrowth and overuse of Island Air Ambulance for this one reason alone: if the number of evacuations assigned to Airlift continues at the present level, their 24-hour Bellingham helicopter base - the one that can send us a helicopter in a life-critical 20 minutes may be closed. Lives, clearly, will be lost when helicopters have to dispatch from Seattle instead.

San Juan County government must get a grip on this situation, and fast. Island Air Ambulance needs to return to the honorable position of emergency backup; those skewing airlift decisions to a single-engine aircraft need to be forced to adopt clear, honest, transparent, publicly reviewable criteria for making their selections; and those who have been purposefully misrepresenting this regrettable diminishment of public safety must fully explain their motivation.

Without such safeguards, we simply can’t trust that a decision to bypass Airlift Northwest is being made in the patient’s best interests.

Ardell Ruth Gordon: August 25, 1922 – October 24, 2013 Ardell Gordon, 91, of Friday Harbor, Wash. passed away on Thursday, Oct. 24, 2013 embraced in the loving hands of the Life Care Center in Friday Harbor with daughter, Mary, at her side.

She began life on a farm in Nebraska, the middle child of seven daughters born to Eugene and Lola (Johnson) Hultquist on Aug. 25, 1922. In 1953 Ardell moved to Palo Alto with husband Dale and her four children.

There she enjoyed the next 50 years surrounded by friends and family.

After Dale’s death in 2005, Ardell relocated to San Juan Island to be close to her daughter and son-in-law Mary and Bob, and their daughter Lola. A beloved mother, Ardell will be remembered for her heart filled with gratitude and her warm and caring

presence.

She will be missed by her three sisters, Dorothy of Bremerton, Wash., Shirley of Dallas, Texas and June of Oakland, Neb.; son, Leland Anderson of Omaha, Neb.; and daughters Caroline Gordon of Los Gatos, Calif.,

Edy Salenger of Maui, Hawaii, Mary Elford, of San Juan Island, Wash. and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, plus many other family members and friends.

Ardell was a dynamic, great lady of generosity, warmth and fun, with a heart full of compassion and good cheer. She was deeply loved and shall be missed. At a later date, she will be interred alongside her husband at Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto, Calif.

Advocate to air insight at Home Trust meeting Affordable housing advocate Greg Winter will be the featured speaker at the 12th Annual Meeting of the San Juan Community Home Trust, Thursday, Nov. 14, at the Grange Hall in Friday Harbor.

The director of the Bellingham-based Opportunity Council's Whatcom Homeless Service Center, Winter will discuss local and regional housing affordability strategies, focusing on examples from Whatcom and Skagit counties, as part of the presentation.

In working with the Family Resources Centers on San Juan, Orcas and Lopez islands, Winter has gained an onthe-ground awareness of issues surrounding affordable housing in San Juan County. He previously managed the 2011 county Prosperity Project, an assessment of community affordable housing needs.

Winter recently helped lead the campaign in support of a “Home Fund levy” dedicated to affordable housing in Bellingham, which was approved by voters last year and for which, in part, he received a “Friend of Housing Award” at the Washington State Affordable Housing Conference in Spokane, in October.

In addition to the presentation by Winter, the Home Trust 12th annual Greg Winter meeting will include a complimentary pizza and salad dinner. Odlin wetland planting party draws a crowd

The group consisted of Lopez and San Juan islanders, members of the San Juan Island Conservation Corps and a number of longtime Odlin campers from the mainland.

In preparation for the planting party, the Washington Conservation Corps helped prepare the site by installing 2,300 feet of fencing to prevent deer from foraging on the newly

planted shrubs and trees, assisting also in putting another 150 plants in the ground in a different, more remote, wetland area.

The park’s wetland project is latest in a series improvements, which include: upgrades to the boat ramp, new mooring buoys, new day-use restroom, watersystem improvements and replacement of the picnic shelter.

FH Elementary School honors veterans, Friday

This year’s guest speaker will be U.S. Navy veteran Frank Mulcahy, director of San Juan County Department of Public Works. The program also features patriotic songs by the elementary school choir and presentation of “Colors” by Scout Troop No. 90.

On display will be the school Veterans’ Wall of Honor, which lists names submitted by students and staff of local veterans or military in service.

H

istory isn’t always about the past.

In fact, museums of all shapes, sizes and stripes have a long history of their own of turning to the latest innovations in order to refresh the stories, events and artifacts of days gone by, and to capture an ever-wandering imagination of an ever-changing audience.

San Juan Island’s very own historical museum is no exception.

And it’s following in the footsteps of that well-worn path of reinvention with its latest endeavor, the creation of a Museum of History

and Industry, designed as an interactive educational facility and a showcase for four of the island’s “core” industries of yesteryear: farming, fishing, logging and lime kilns.

“Even though we focus on the past, anymore it’s all about being interactive and getting people involved,” museum Director Kevin Loftus said. “We really want to make it cutting edge and keep up with current technologies.”

Housed all under one roof, within the walls of the renovated barn on the museum grounds, each industry will be individually featured in its own wing, an exhibit all its own, and highlighted by a mixture of integrated murals, photographs, videos, artifacts and interactive, hands-on displays that bring to life the sights, sounds and stories of those former cornerstones of island commerce.

In the entrance of the barn will an expansive atrium, with a large three-dimensional topographical map at its centerpiece, which identifies locations and developments of each of the four industries. Its walls will be lined near the ceiling with photographs of various islanders and the room will also feature audio handsets with recordings of local oral histories narrated by island actors. The atrium will be completed by the end of autumn, Loftus said.

The museum and its parent group, the San Juan Island Historical Society, recently launched a fundraising drive — with a $200,000 goal — to help finance the project. But plans for the Museum of Industry have been in the works for quite awhile, Loftus added.

Backed by grants by the state historical society, the museum has already invested $168,000 in renovating, enlarging and improving the barn over the past six years. It now also has its own electrical supply.

Plans call for the four exhibits to be completed in phases: fishing by late spring, farming in the fall, logging by spring of 2015, with the Lime exhibit following later that autumn. Although it may sound ambitious, Loftus said the project is well planned and the stage is set for all the pieces to fall into place.

“We’ve never really done anything of this scope,” he said. “But it’s not just a new idea.

It’s going to work.”

The ordinance establishes new design report approval, source approval, groundwater quality, design standard, reliability, on-going routine monitoring, drinking water materials and additives, distribution system, disinfection system, continuity of service, operating and maintenance, and recordkeeping and reporting requirements for Group B water systems. The ordinance adds a section regarding existing Group B systems, establishes approval status and compliance requirements for Group B water systems, and modifies the Group B annual permit period of validity. Group B and other public water system general requirements are amended and specific requirements

related to Lopez Village and certain large systems are deleted or relocated. The ordinance amends regulations for when designer certification or a licensed engineer is needed, amends wording for site approval of individual wells, amends construction standards, and adds and amends regulations for construction in a public system service area or urban growth area. The ordinance amends source capacity requirements for subdivisions and adds seawater treatment as an option for subdivisions, and also amends water availability requirements for simple land divisions. The ordinance clarifies the water availability requirements for building permits. The ordinance will add, clarify and modify several definitions applicable to water wells and water systems. The ordinance repeals San Juan County Code (SJCC) section 8.06.135 and modifies the list of appendices to SJCC Chapter 8.06.

TOWN OF FRIDAY HARBOR LEGAL NOTICES inch (8”) PVC water distribution main and 384 lineal feet of new 8” SDR35 Sewer along the existing alignments from points of connection at Front Street and terminating at points of connection at First Street. The work includes change-over of (6) existing metered water services of varying sizes as well as (1) existing 2” fire service and (1) existing fire hydrant, disinfection and testing of the water facilities, converting an existing lift station to a gravity manhole, construction of (2) new manhole structures, air and mandrel testing of the sewer facilities and restoration of roadway section and HMA paving.

The work of the base contract also includes temporary storm water BMP’s which must be in place and accepted before any other work is begun.

The project contains one alternative bid item; the construction of an 8” PRV vault.

Notice to proceed is scheduled for January 2, 2014 and water, sewer, roadway section and first lift of HMA (left .10’ low) shall be complete in ninety (90) calendar days with the final HMA lift to be completed in a March-April time-frame. Construction costs are estimated at $166,344 dollars for the base bid project and $34,180 dollars for bid alternative #1.

The project is subject to Washington

State Prevailing Wage Rates.

Due to the location, with both sides of the street dedicated to restaurant, retail and professional businesses active during normal business hours and regularly unloading ferry traffic beginning at 5:20 am and ending at 9:25 pm, bidders are cautioned that working hours for this project will be 09:00pm to 5:00am, Monday thru Friday.

‘Daughters’ welcome five The San Juan Islands Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution welcomed five new members to the group Oct. 15, joining another new member, who was inducted Sept. 17.

A service organization of women 18 years and above, Daughters of the American Revolution trace their direct lineage to someone who fought for or helped in the cause of American Revolution and War of Independence .

The San Juan Island Chapter consists of 42 members from San Juan, Orcas, Lopez and Shaw islands, as well as from Marysville, Anacortes, Mill Creek and Seattle. One member

V’ball team season ends in loss to Pioneers

The Friday Harbor volleyball team was eliminated from post-season play in a closely contested match against Nooksack Valley, 25-18, 25-23, 16-25, 25-23, in the consolation bracket of the Northwest Conference 1A playoffs, Saturday, at King’s High School.

Following a loss to South Whidbey in their playoff opener, the Wolverines (11-6 overall) advanced to the second round of the consolation bracket with a three-game sweep over Meridian, their second victory over the Trojans this season.

They faced the Pioneers in a “loser out” match.
