ONGOING Deer Hunting at Island Center Forest: Deer hunting season is now open and Island Center Forest will be closed to all other uses until Nov. 1. Only the Gateway and the Natural Area will remain open during this time. Chautauqua Book Fair: Chautauqua Elementary School is having a book fair to raise money to support its scholarship program for the fifth-grade Camp Waskowitz experience. Tour a working research boat and learn about research being done in Quartermaster Harbor this weekend at an open house aboard the RV Barnes. University of Washington oceanographer Cheryl Greengrove has been working on and off in Quartermaster Harbor for years, studying nitrogen levels in the harbor as well as the harmful algae blooms that occur there. She’s concluding her time on Vashon by holding an open house where visitors can tour the vessel, meet UW researchers and learn about what they’ve found in the harbor as well as what questions remain unanswered. The open house will be from 8 a.m. to noon aboard the RV Barnes, which will be docked in Dockton. you and your dog can become a certified Pet Partner team.
