With a pencil in hand, shaping lowercase and uppercase cursive letters between the lines has traditionally been part of a child’s elementary education. Gas and electricity price adjustments coming soon
William Shaw, Publisher wshaw@soundpublishing.com Mary L. Grady, Editor editor@mi-reporter.com
Puget Sound Energy has filed a request with Washington state regulators to increase natural gas rates for the upcoming winter season by an overall 1.5 percent, effective Nov. 1. If approved by the Utilities and Transportation Commission (UTC), the proposed Purchased Gas Adjustment (PGA) will increase a typical household’s natural gas bill (based on 68 therms of average monthly usage over a 12-month period) by 1.4 percent, or $1.07, to $78.55. That is about what PSE customers were paying in 2010. Commercial rates will increase by about 1.6 percent.

members Bertlin and Senn. Upon opening this letter, I discovered it was a misleading piece of political advertisement, directed at me solely because of my gender. How can this letter truly reflect the thoughts of Bertlin and Senn when it was “paid for by the Dan Grausz Re-Election Committee?” Are Bertlin and Senn bought and paid for by Grausz? I expect more from my elected officials. (I note that Senn has not yet been elected, having been appointed last year to fill a vacant position.) While I would prefer that my mailbox is free from political advertisements, if they are distributed, I expect the information to be accurate. Several statements made by “Bertlin” and “Senn” regarding Scheid’s qualifications border on defamation — a reckless disregard of the truth. Scheid has volunteered for over 15 years with the Holiday Stockings for Homeless Children, coached numerous Boys and Girls Club sports teams, was a member of the High School Principal Selection Committee and High School Site Council, in addition to his active involvement in his church. How can I trust any information coming from Bertlin, Senn, and/or Grausz after this political hit piece? Thank you, Council member Meyer Brahm, for exercising some judgment and refraining from jumping on the “Islander women” bandwagon. Islanders, we deserve better. Traci Granbois
‘Dismayed’ by misrepresentation in letter to voters Our family recently received a campaign letter addressed to “Women of Mercer Island,” signed by Council members Debbie Bertlin and Tana Senn. A letter to the editor of the Mercer Island Reporter posted by Kathy Lopus on Sept. 20, 2013, states that Ms. Bertlin and Ms.
Senn have misrepresented Kevin Scheid’s extensive and outstanding record, which is accessible for anyone with a modicum of computer literacy. Here is the link that I urge Ms. Bertlin and Ms. Senn to visit: www. kevinscheid.org/about-kevin.html. Quite frankly, we are dismayed that two of our elected representatives have stooped to this level of “misrepresentation.” It is one thing for them to be “thrilled to provide support” for their candidate, but quite another matter to deliberately “misrepresent” the opponent’s outstanding civic record. In my opinion, Ms. Bertlin and Ms. Senn owe Kevin Scheid and his family an apology. That would be the right thing to do in this case, but perhaps I am too old-fashioned. Your campaign flyer also omits any information about who paid for the piece, which is a legal requirement. Claus V. Jensen
No ‘deals’ on parking were made for Legacy project While I realize that during election season the truth gets stretched, the letter in the Sept. 25 Reporter attacking Council member Jane Meyer Brahm and me for our vote on the Legacy (former True Value site) project takes distortion of the facts to a new level. First, the Council never approved any special parking deal for a very simple reason — it was never asked to. The project fully complied with the existing parking code. Stories to the contrary began with a newsletter from Council member Mike Cero, in which he interpreted the code differently than city staff, the city’s lawyers and the citizens on the Design Commission. While I respect Mike, the easiest way to buy a lawsuit is to interpret the code differently from those who are actually given the legal

Second, the two material variances from the code that the developer asked for were to not put retail storefronts on the part of the project fronting on the steep hill going up S.E. 27th and to have a higher income level for the project’s affordable housing units. With the retail vacancies we already have in Town Center, the Council did not insist on what would have been undesirable retail space. As to affordable housing, the proposed units still met what is considered the King County “moderate income level.” The Council did demand a steep price for these concessions. First, the developer provided more affordable housing units than the law required. Second, the developer agreed not to apply for the affordable housing real property tax exemption it would otherwise qualify for — a huge financial gain for Islander taxpayers. Third, the developer placed a public plaza on S.E. 76th, which it otherwise had no obliga-
tion to provide. I respect that people can take issue with Town Center development, but let’s be honest with what happened as to the Legacy project. The only concessions that Council member Brahm, other Council members and I made in the case of that project did not involve parking and were ones that the city got far more than it gave. Dan Grausz
Tolling I have attended and spoken at a number of hearings on Mercer Island and in Bellevue in opposition to any tolls on I-90. Numerous times, I’ve written my protests to Rep. Judy Clibborn. Once again, I urged her not to toll I-90. In my 74 years of life, I cannot remember when Americans in general were so distrustful of government, local, state and national. The examples of these feelings are all around us. Please listen to us. An overwhelming majority of Americans never expected any Interstate roads/highways to be tolled.
Surely you all know and understand this. The Mercer Island bridge already has been paid for three times before by the citizens. First, when it was built in 1939. Second, when the parallel bridge with HOV lanes was built in 1995. Third, when the old bridge sank due to the incompetent decision to retain the pressure washing water in its pontoons. Now state, local and federal government thinks the citizens, mainly of Mercer Island and the Eastside, should pay the equivalent of a fourth bridge, which is not even in the interstate system. If you have any sense of the effect you have on government’s truthfulness, competence or obligation to the people you represent, you will not let this tolling of I-90 happen. Frederic S. Weiss

Mercer Island, I have followed the ongoing I-90 tolling saga carefully. Therefore, I have been following the Mercer Island City Council’s actions to prevent I-90 tolling. A huge part of stopping approval of I-90 tolling is organized, vocal and steadfast community refusal to accept tolling the federal interstate. Islanders have been clear: we overwhelmingly do not support tolls on I-90. We are organized, thanks to Lisa Belden and Eva Zemplenyi, and we’re still ready to resist tolling going forward. This fight is making progress but is far from over. And to keep the opposition strong, we need a City Council that will not surrender to this challenge. We cannot have representing us individuals who have stated, “…Basically half of Islanders will have to pay a toll one way or the other…” and, “I understand that no one gets a free ride, and I am not asking for that…” (Dan Grausz, Jan. 7, 2013, City Council meeting, at 2 hours, 48 minutes). Additionally, in Dan Grausz’s Feb. 18, 2013, email to constituents, he states that we should be “willing to do a reality check here and not tilt at windmills believing” that we can convince the Legislature to

Dating back to his Dec. 2, 2008, Islander Newsletter to recent comments to Islanders and the Washington state Legislature, Dan Grausz has repeated his belief that tolling in one direction is inevitable and that Mercer Islanders must pay their “fair share.” His words reveal him not to be the bulwark Mercer Islander’s need to protect them from tolling. Compromise may be necessary at some point in a struggle, but not at the outset of a battle to prevent an inequitable, harmful, unprecedented tax of disproportionate impact. Tolling — with its effects of congestion, increased pollution due to this increased congestion, decreased mobility and resulting decreased economic vibrancy — is not inevitable, but only if those who represent us share that undiluted passion, are willing to act on it, and lead determinedly. Kevin Scheid will be that leader. Julie Sun

products. The Jewish tradition — like many religious traditions — holds a reverence for life. We are not allowed to engage in actions that harm others or ourselves. But how can we do this as long as we live in a world where the everyday objects that surround us could be harming us, and especially our children? Current laws on toxic chemicals are very weak. This means that most — over 80,000 — chemicals sold in products in the U.S. have never been tested for toxic effects, while others whose dangers are known remain unregulated and unlabeled. Congress is considering a much-needed update of federal laws, which must be strengthened to protect all consumers. Closer to home, the Washington state Legislature will again be considering the Toxic Free Kids and Families’ Act in the coming session. I urge all Mercer Island readers to contact Sen. Steve Litzow to pass this legislation to make sure our kids and our families have the benefit of strong regulation for safe chemicals in all products that we buy. Our religious values call for this, as does our common sense.

Community briefs City road projects continue this week
After completing projects last week paving a block of 80th Avenue S.E. in the Town Center and along 67th Avenue S.E. in the East Seattle neighborhood, the city’s street crew is working this week along West Mercer Way between S.E. 24th Street and S.E. 28th Street. On Wednesday, crews will be patching and making minor changes that will include the widening of the roadway. According to city street engineer, Clint Morris, the work will happen even if it rains. On Thursday, there will be pavement grinding over the full width and length of the project. Again, this work will occur even if it rains. On Friday, the road will be paved one side at a time. But the city needs dry weather for this step. Each day, crews will close one lane of West Mercer Way as a work zone and maintain alternating oneway traffic flow with flaggers. Drivers should expect some driving delays through this area and con-
gestion at the S.E. 24th Street intersection when crews are working at that end of the project. Work hours begin at 7:30 a.m. and extend to 5 p.m., with traffic control setup starting around 7 a.m. Drivers should also expect a lot of dump truck traffic in the area on these days. Homeowners along West Mercer Way have been notified of the work. For more information, go to www.mercergov.org.

Betty (Hogan) Borracchini
Betty (Hogan) Borracchini was born September 30, 1928 and returned to the Lord September 22, 2013. Betty Borracchini peacefully took the hands of all the angels and saints to join the Lord in Heaven on Sunday, September 22, 2013. She was surrounded by her husband, daughters, son-in-laws and grandchildren when she passed. Betty is survived by her devoted husband, Remo Borracchini and her 3 loving children Lisa (Paul) Desimone, Nannette (Jim) Heye and Mimi (John) Norris and her 7 grandchildren Maria Desimone (Jared Radtke), Matthew (Susan) Heye, Carmella Desimone, Ryan (Elizabeth) Heye, Garren Heye, Brandon Norris and Dominic Norris as well as Betty’s sister, Agnes Ciotta. Betty was born to Owen and Elizabeth Hogan in Bremerton, WA. She grew up in Renton where she attended St. Anthony’s grade school. She loved school and excelled in all her studies. Talking her dad into letting her take the bus from Renton to Ballard, she later attended and graduated from Holy Angels High School where she continued to work hard at her studies and thoroughly enjoyed reading and English. Following high school, Betty attended and graduated from dress design school where she first became interested in fashion. With a natural inclination for style and design, she modeled for I. Magnin stores. In 1954, she married the love of her life, Remo Borracchini. September 18th marked their 59th wedding anniversary. Together, they celebrated the joy brought into their lives by their 3 daughters and son-in laws (whom she referred to as her “boys”.) Her grandchildren were her pride and joy and she celebrated each and every accomplishment with them. As Betty and Remo raised their family, they built Borracchini’s Bakery together, utilizing Betty’s creativity and people skills and Remo’s hard work ethics. Betty loved oil painting, wood carving, doll-making, cooking and ballroom dancing. She was deeply proud of her Irish heritage; her yearly St. Paddy’s Day parties for family and friends were famous near and far. She passed away as she had lived...with grace and beauty and faith. In lieu of flowers, remembrances in Betty’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Viewing will be held Monday, September 30 and Tuesday, October 1, 1:00-7:00 p.m. at Columbia Funeral Home, 4567 Rainier Ave South Seattle, WA 98118 columbiafuneralhome. com Rosary will be Wednesday, October 2 at 10:00 am followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. Monica Catholic Church: 4311 88th Ave SE Mercer Island (reception to follow in church hall). Don’t wait, a mammogram can save your life
E
very week, more than 100 women in Washington state are diagnosed with breast cancer. The good news is, when caught early, a woman’s fiveyear survival rate for breast cancer is 98 percent. This is why Komen Puget Sound is such a passionate advocate for regular mammograms. Yet, too often I hear stories of women diagnosed in the late stages of this disease, when the chances for survival are significantly less. There are so many reasons for putting off a mammogram. Perhaps you think, “I have plenty of time,” or “it won’t happen to me.” But the simple fact is a mammogram can save your life. Another fact: when breast cancer hits, it affects your entire family. You are not just getting that mammogram for yourself, but also for your spouse, your children and everyone you love. For everyone’s sake, take charge of your health, and get a mammogram. There’s no time to lose. At Komen P u g e t Sound, we bring this personal sense of urgency to the work we do every day, as we have for the past 20 Komen Puget Sound years. Today, K o m e n P u g e t Sound is the single largest funder of free mammograms to low-income and uninsured women. Luisa Lavalle received one of the more than 3,100 free mammograms provided by Komen Puget Sound last year. Even though she worked full-time, Luisa lacked the $900 a month that she needed to pay for private health insurance. Encouraged by a friend, she
“Every week, more than 100 women in Washington state are diagnosed with breast cancer.”
Mona Locke attended a Komen-funded, free mammogram event in her community, where she was diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. Here is what Luisa shared with us: “My breast cancer was aggressive, and I know that if I had waited a few months more, the outcome would have been much different. Without Komen, I probably would not have had my mammogram in time. I know it saved my life.” I am proud of what we have accomplished for Luisa and thousands of women like her, yet I am even more mindful of all that still needs to be done. Too many of us have lost a wife, a sister, a mother, a daughter, a friend to breast cancer. Please join our local fight against breast cancer. To learn more about Komen Puget Sound, visit us online at komenpugetsound. org. Together we can and will save lives in our community, and ultimately end breast cancer forever. writing | FROM 1 curriculum, readability levels are changing, Rundle said. There will be changes in expectations for what students are able to read and comprehend, he explained. People think that English and language arts are traditionally about reading and writing, Rundle said. But with Common Core it will be more: speaking, listening, how to communicate effectively. At the French-American School of Puget Sound, cursive is being taught in kindergarten and first grade. “Our students continue their French handwriting throughout their experience at FASPS usually even when given the choice in the upper grades,” said Elli Gildnes, the assistant head of English curriculum. FASPS is accredited by the French Ministry of Education, which requires teachers to teach cursive beginning in kindergarten. Children ages 3 and 4, in the FASPS Young PreKindergarten and Pre-K program, begin uppercase block printing. Kindergartners learn uppercase block printing until January, and then begin lowercase cursive — taught in French and reinforced by an English teacher, Gildnes said. “It’s all about circles and lines, always,” Cécile Chapel, a first-grade teacher, said. By the end of kindergarten, students can write their names and a few words in cursive. When they arrive in first grade, they know all the letters, Chapel said. First-graders begin uppercase cursive with their French teacher, and lowercase printing with their English teacher. Graphilettre is used for first-graders. Kids begin with the basic movement of the hand. Then, they start forming large letters, work-
ing toward very small letters. FASPS orders special notebooks from France. “During their work, they need to be able to always right in cursive,” Chapel said. “To start with, it’s always four lines.” Presenting their work properly is important, she said. “We try to put cursive and print everywhere so they know how to go from one to another very fast,” Chapel explained. At St. Monica School, cursive is not being taught this year. “The children keyboard mostly,” Anca Wilson, St. Monica principal, said. “They do use handwriting, but mainly printing, so for the past several years there has been a shift away from cursive. This year, the teacher said she’d rather put that time into word study and teaching Phonics than
cursive.” While Wilson and thirdgrade teacher Mrs. Malone feel that cursive is a good thing, they view it as obsolete. “Cursive takes a lot of practice. We find that parent don’t practice at home with the kids,” Wilson said. “Personally, I’m sad to see it go, but we have to think in terms of what’s relevant.” Cursive, however, helps with efficiency at FASPS. “We believe it goes faster because it is always one movement,” Chapel said. “Each word is a different block; you can see the segmentation. In print, visually, it’s not as segmented.” Last week, a first-grader told Chapel that her dad showed her the Declaration of Independence, which was written in cursive. “She was so excited she could recognize the letters,” Chapel said.

By 2007, they had begun planting the four grapes that make up their wine: cabernet, merlot, malbec and cabernet franc. While waiting for his own vineyards to mature, Ramseyer purchased grapes. By 2010, he used his own grapes and is now entirely estate grown. Anyone with a home garden knows farming is hard work. Factor into that: your
“farm” or vineyard is 2 1/2 hours away. “Either Heather or I go to Zillah every other week, but much more during harvest and crush. At that time, we’re not home very much,” Ramseyer said. A home gardener harvests his crop and usually eats it right away — tomatoes or corn, for example. With grapes, you aren’t even halfway there. Grapes are picked and crushed. Yeasts
are selected, wood for the barrels is chosen, and the finished wine varietals are blended. Fortunately, for the Ramseyers, they have a competent vineyard manager. Patrick Rawn, from Two Mountain Winery, manages their vineyards with a crew that prunes and mows. “We are to harvest our ninth vintage. Our model has not changed from the start,” Ramseyer explained.

WINE | FROM 9 cases annually and release the wine to a mailing list in the spring.” “This should be another great year in the vineyard,” commented Ramseyer. “It’s been warmer than normal, and if it stays like this, we will be harvesting about two weeks earlier than usual.” Ramseyer has received critical acclaim. The Wine Spectator
NEW from prEmEra bluE cross!
rated Ramseyer Vintage Five, 93/100: “Supple, rich and expressive, this is vibrant with acidity against ripe cherry and raspberry fruit with earthy notes and undertone of mint.” The Wine Advocate, which many consider to be the ultimate critic for wines, rated 2010 Ramseyer Vintage Six, 92/100: “Looking at John’s latest release … offers up a pure, classy and complex profile of exotic spice, cedar, sagebrush licorice and creaming raspberry-styled fruit on the nose … it’s a beautiful, balanced medium to full-bodied effort that has a polished texture, sweet
fruit, integrated acidity and fantastic length on the palate. Drink this serious effort over the coming 10-12 years.” In 2012, Compass Wines, a venerable wine store in Anacortes, selected Ramseyer’s 2009 as the Washington Wine of the Year. “In just a few short years, Ramseyer has gone from an unknown commodity to up and coming superstar. John’s latest release is a textbook example of Yakima Cabernet that just keeps getting better and better. When folks call from out of state and want a representative of Washington Cab, this is the first bottle we grab. Bravo!” To find out more, go to ramseyervineyards.com or (206) 909-1548. Big play gives Islanders the edge Finely executed Q3 play shifts momentum to Islanders By Reporter Staff
At halftime, the outcome of the football game between the Islanders and the Sammamish High School Totems last Friday evening, Sept. 27, was far from certain. The score at the half was Mercer Island, 16, and Sammamish, 12, with the Totems coming on strong, scoring twice in the second quarter. But a single play early in the second half turned the tide for the away team. Jackson Caputo, an Islander sophomore, caught a perfectly thrown 45-yard pass from wide receiver George Pallis and ran in for a score on the Sammamish home field. The Mercer Island crowd erupted in joy and the
Islanders never looked back, winning the game 52 to 19. The play was designed and formulated by Mark Caputo, who participated as a guest coach for the play of the night. Each year the MIHS Football Booster Club holds an auction for one participant to call one play during a game. Mark Caputo won the opportunity to call this particular play. It was an unusual play calling for perfect timing, positioning and teamwork. The ball was snapped to quarterback Alfonso Gonzalez, then handed off to running back Devlin Conway. Conway then slipped the ball off to wide receiver George Pallis, who threw the ball to Caputo for the 53-yard touchdown play. Also in the third quarter, Islander Patrick Nielson blocked a punt, recovered the ball and ran in for another six points. The Islanders scored 35 points in the third quarter.
