Way at 82nd Avenue S.E., Mercer Island Music was formerly known as BLI Music, which was established in 2004. The business changed ownership in August 2011, when Dan Sotelo turned it over to Connie Wible, Maggie Harvey and Pete Tellefson. Mercer Island Music was the last shop to offer parts and repairs on the Island. Musicians will now have to go off-Island to have their instruments repaired.

Island residents have several new options of places to purchase alcohol. The new law went into effect on June 1. Businesses that now hold licenses approved by the state’s Liquor Control Board, including both QFC stores and Albertsons, are now selling alcohol. Walgreens and Rite Aid, on the northern end of the Island, also began selling on Friday. Shawn Cooprider, who won the Mercer Island liquor store in the state auction last month, said Friday they plan to open the store soon, but are still working on a few things. “We do plan on being open in the near future,” he said. “It’s going to be a concept store, and hopefully Mercer Island will become our flagship.”

Two-thirds | FROM 1 1053 and more recently I-1185 in January 2012, requires that any tax increased passed by the legislature needs twothirds approval by both the state House and Senate. Heller stated in case documents that the mandatory referendum requirement was unconstitutional because the “supermajority vote requirement violates the simple majority

provision” in the state’s constitution. The lawsuit, which was filed by groups like the League of Educational Voters, the Washington Education Association and others, claimed the rule kept lawmakers from funding schools and other public services. “This decision is a victory for the children of Washington state,” said

Mary Lindquist, WEA president, in a press release. “If it is upheld, this ruling will pave the way for the Legislature to fully fund K-12 public schools as mandated by the Supreme Court’s McCleary decision and the state constitution. We hope it will be settled soon. Our kids can’t wait any longer.” The state attorney general will appeal the decision to the Washington Supreme Court.
