Space-Saving Tricks for Small Kitchens A well-designed kitchen has minimal clutter and maximum efficiency. Whether you're redecorating or totally remodeling, here are some great ideas to make your small kitchen look larger and more beautiful.

Mirrors Work Magic A kitchen with a mirrored backsplash as in this picture gives the illusion of more space. The kitchen opens up to the living room on one side and the family room, where we eat and watch TV, on the other. The idea is that it should be an extension of both of these spaces.

Think Upward The designer of this small kitchen extends the kitchen upwards to ensure accommodation of stuff and to avoid clutter. Home Depot designer Emily O'Keefe added cabinetry with period charm to this small kitchen. "Since space was tight, I went up, stacking the cabinets," she says. "The ceilings are 11 feet high, but not every cabinet touches the ceiling - that way they look more like furniture." Its a smart idea worth trying in your own kitchen.

The design sense envisions a house where "every window would be a picture." In this master bath, the tub is installed between a pair of stately walnut shelving units, which display ceramics and provide easy access to stacked towels while framing the extraordinary mountain views.

Designers understand the transformative power of even a small renovation. To take advantage of all the extraordinary ocean views, the designer ripped out the false ceiling in the bathroom and installed dramatic double-height windows.
