The Princess and the Pea nce upon a time, there was a prince who lived in a wealthy kingdom. When he had reached the proper age, his mother, the queen, decided the time was right for her son to find a bride. The prince, however, was determined not to marry just any girl, but that his future wife should be a “real princess. So he traveled the world and searched in all the kingdoms and met with all the princesses, but he still wasn’t satisfied. One evening, there brewed a terrible storm, with thunder, lightning, and rain. It was really frightful! In the midst of it all came a knock at the town gate. The old king went to open it. Who should be standing outside but a young lass, and what a sight she was in all that rain and wind. Water streamed from her hair down her clothes into her shoes, and ran out at the heels. Yet she claimed to be a real Princess. Although no one believed her, she was invited in to stay for the night. The queen decided to test the young girl’s claim of nobility—without saying a word, the queen went to the bedroom, stripped back the bedclothes, and put a single pea in the bottom of the bed. The queen then took 20 mattresses and stacked them on top of the pea, and took 20 eiderdown feather beds and piled them on the mattresses. Up on top of all these the princess was to spend the night. The next morning when the girl woke up, the queen asked how she slept.“Oh, very poorly! she said. “I scarcely closed my eyes all night. Heaven only knows what was in the bed, but I was lying on something hard, and now I am black and blue all over my body. It’s horrible! There was no question about it. They could see she was a real princess, since she had felt one pea all the way through 20 mattresses and 20 more feather beds. Nobody but a princess could be so delicate. So the prince made haste to marry her, because he knew he had found a real princess. As for the pea, it was placed in a museum where it still can be seen.

Traditional and non-traditional ways to

a wedding

S

ome couples want to celebrate their weddings in traditional fashion. Others want everything to be unique, new and exciting. Today’s weddings are largely planned, financed and executed entirely by the couple getting married. Therefore, it is up to them to decide how to celebrate their special day.

Here’s a look at some of the traditional wedding elements and how they can be shaken up for a different spin.

traditional:

Father walks the bride down the aisle.

alternative: A son, daughter, friend, or even both parents walk the bride down the aisle. She can also traverse solo, if desired. Perhaps the groom meets the bride halfway and they walk the rest of the aisle together.

traditional: “The Wedding March (Here Comes the Bride)” plays when the bride enters.

alternative: Any favourite classical or modern song is played when the bride enters, as long as it is approved by the venue where the ceremony is taking place.

traditional: Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue.

alternative: Wear

all new items, all antique items. Borrow all of your wedding day apparel - it’s the bride’s choice.

traditional:

Wedding dance sequence following the bride and groom’s first dance: The bride dances with her father while the groom dances with his mother-in law. Then the bride dances with her father-in-law and the bride’s father with the groom’s mother. The groom dances with his mother, then the wedding party attendants take turns dancing with the bride and groom before all the guests join in. According to etiquette the dance and music should remain low-key until

alternative:

We l c o m e everyone present to dance with a special member of their family so all eyes are not on the bride and groom, who may be self-conscious about dancing with their parents. You can also skip these dances altogether.

traditional: Bouquet toss for the bride and garter toss for the groom.

alternative:

Toss beads or treats in the style of Mardi Gras to all of the guests, so it’s not only about single men and women.

Your guide to getting hitched

W

eddings can be expensive, timeconsuming and stressful to plan. Few couples embroiled in the process haven’t thought about running away to elope. It’s certainly spontaneous and can be cost-effective, but is it for you? Roughly 100,000 couples head to Las Vegas each year to say their “I Dos”. Vegas is the self-proclaimed wedding capital of the world. With a growing number of celebrities and high-profile individuals running off to get hitched in low-key ceremonies, eloping can seem quite enticing. Consider these pros and cons before you book your airline tickets.

REDBARK PHOTO

10  valleybride 2011

He bought it from Advantages There are several advantages to eloping. The foremost reason is cost. Couples who elope to City Hall or close by will pay a nominal fee for their nuptials. A marriage license may only be around $75, and your other expenses will be wardrobe and transportation to and from the event. Eloping is also a viable idea for couples with family issues. If some members of the family do not get along or if there are individuals who don’t approve of the marriage, it can be easier to avoid the drama of a wedding ceremony and reception and get married in a small, simple ceremony ... alone. A bride who has lost her father or mother may choose to forego the pomp and circumstance of walking down the aisle for a simpler ceremony. Another reason to elope is to avoid the stress and hassle of planning the wedding. Some people are born organizers and planners. Others get overwhelmed just deciding on what to eat for dinner. When eloping, the only things couples must plan are the where, when and how of the event. Fewer people involved means fewer hassles.

Quality Q Counts

Disadvantages Eloping does have its share of disadvantages, as well. Primarily it’s experienced only by the bride and groom and perhaps a witness. This means others won’t be around to share in this momentous event. Some people who elope later regret not having a more traditional ceremony. Chances are a few people will have hurt feelings if you choose to elope and not include them in the wedding. Parents of the bride and groom may feel left out. Remember, a wedding is a celebration not just for the bride and groom, but for their families as well. If you’re running off to get married because a family member doesn’t approve of your future spouse, you could permanently fracture the relationship this person will have with the family.

If You Decide to Elope, Do it With Style If you’ve assessed the pros and cons and have decided to elope, consider these pointers. • Research the marriage requirements in the place where you have decided to marry. Some foreign locales require a layover period of a few days to a week before filling out the marriage papers and getting married. • Choose a location that has meaning for you. Don’t pick a place simply because of popularity. • Elope, but still invite a few people to witness the event. One or two close friends, your parents or siblings can stand in as witnesses at the ceremony. • If you choose to do it as a duo, hire a photographer to take pictures of the ceremony and mail out an announcement to your family and friends. • Host a reception for close family and friends so they can celebrate the betrothal. It doesn’t have to be a lavish affair. A cocktail party or barbecue is adequate. • If you elope in secrecy, don’t count on lavish wedding gifts. • Put the money you would have spent on a wedding toward the down payment on a house. Get married in the backyard or living room of your new place and have a wedding/house-warming party. n

take Tips for a Second Trip Down the Aisle

C

hances are someone you know will make another trip down the aisle at one point in his or her life. Individuals who have lost a spouse or have divorced may eventually choose to

remarry. A second wedding is a chance to focus more on what you want as a couple instead of the wedding your parents may have wished for you. Today there are no rules in second weddings; the happy couple can customize it as they see fit.

14  valleybride 2011

Second weddings are a great way for couples to showcase their personalities and don’t have to be constrained by tradition. Here are some top tips for taking that trip down the aisle the second time around. • Put your first wedding out of your mind. Now is not the time to make comparisons. This wedding should be all about you and your new spouse-to-be. Go for something completely different than your prior wedding so there will be no side-by-side comparisons.

• Choose a wedding party you really want. You can have a lavish wedding again, complete with a big bridal party. However, this time around you can choose the friends and family members you really desire to stand beside you, instead of individuals you may have felt obligated to include the first time around. • Go ahead and wear white. Tradition once stated that take-two brides were not supposed to wear white. Toss tradition aside and go ahead and do what you want. Just be sure the gown compliments your age and body shape and doesn’t seem too virginal. If your previous wedding was annulled, you also may be able to wear a wedding veil. • Include your children in the festivities and planning. If you or your future spouse has children from a previous marriage, make them feel a part of this new blended family by including them in the second wedding. They may play a role in the ceremony, such as making a speech or reading a religious passage. Other brides and grooms choose to have their children walk them down the aisle this time around. Also, involve the kids in the planning. They may be excited to help you choose wedding vendors or address invitations. • Personalize your event. Take the time to write your own vows, make handmade favours or single out the special people in your lives. • Feel free to be extravagant. You may be more established in life with a secure job and bigger paycheck. Therefore you can expand the wedding budget a little more. Go for all of the goodies you may have passed on with your previous marriage, such as exotic foods or that extra-long honeymoon. • Involve the groom as well. Today’s modern men want a say in their wedding just as much as the bride, say wedding experts. Make sure he is apprised of all the details and ensure that he is able to make it to vendor appointments and the like. Just as a second wedding is a second chance for happiness, it is another opportunity to throw the wedding of your dreams. n

Grooming Tips: Finding the Right Wedding Wardrobe for Your Groom

While eyes certainly may be trained on the bride, the groom can expect his share of admirers as well. Being well dressed is essential.

A

ll eyes are typically on the bride during a wedding. But that doesn’t mean the groom should be a shrinking violet. While the bridal gown may garner the “oohs” and “aahs,” what the groom wears on his wedding day is important as well. In many ceremonies, the groom spends several minutes standing beside the alter awaiting his bride-to-be. Before the first notes of “Here Comes the Bride” are played, all eyes will be on him as he anxiously awaits the start of the ceremony. As such, it is essential that the groom looks well polished and is dressed in accordance with the tone and scope of the wedding.

Because most weddings are formal occasions, grooms often choose to wear a tuxedo or highend suit. A well-fitted tuxedo combined with a formal shirt, tie and vest is the classic wedding ensemble. Generally the tuxedo jacket is singlebreasted with three buttons and satin trim. This style is universally flattering to most men’s frames. Accessorizing the tuxedo can mean different things. Some choose to wear a vest while others opt for a cummerbund; others add suspenders. These accessories, including the tie or bow tie and the vest, can be all black like the tuxedo or can be coordinated with the colors of the wedding party. For example, if the bridesmaids are wearing butter yellow gowns, the groomsmen can wear yellow accessories. However, to set themselves apart from the groomsmen and ushers, grooms tend to go with the classic black and white and forego colors. On some occasions, grooms may choose to wear a white tuxedo. A well-groomed groom is also an important wedding day must. He should be well-shaven and have recently had a haircut. If he has facial hair, it should be trimmed and neat. Because he will be photographed all day long, a groom can choose to take some cues from his soon-to-be-spouse. He may indulge in a manicure to ensure nails and cuticles are neat. A dusting of translucent facial powder can tame shiny skin in photos. Some couples opt for teeth whitening prior to the wedding to ensure a sparkling smile. When dressing the rest of the men in a wedding, they should take their cues from the groom, but not be carbon-copies of him. Fathers of the bride and groom can set themselves apart with a pocket square or a specially colored boutonniere. The exception to a tuxedo or a suit would be for a casual wedding, particularly one held at the beach or in a park. Then the groom can wear what will coordinate for the occasion, such as a dress shirt and slacks, or even sandals and shorts for the ultracasual wedding. n

And another really neat idea is where the guests were each mailed a guestbook page to do with as they will, decorate, write what they wish, etc. The guests then bring the page with them to be placed in the guestbook. What an awesome memory, very personal, and very unique. The bride and groom will have something much more well thought out then a hurried scrawl in a book as they pass by, they get to think and create and make it memorable. Great for all those scrap booking creative people out there, they can make a masterpiece for the couple perhaps including some memory photos of themselves with the bride and or groom! n

Approaching the Issue of

Weddings children at

T

here are no etiquette rules regarding whether children should attend weddings. The decision is entirely up to the couple getting married. If you are a guest invited to a wedding and your children are not, there is no reason to take offense. You should certainly respect the wishes of the bride and groom. It is improper to turn up at the occasion with your children and put the couple on the spot. Young children are unpredictable and cannot be trusted to behave at all times. Couples may not want to have their festivities - often occasions that cost $30,000 or more - to be interrupted by children who may be a little too boisterous. Also, children may be an inconvenience to adults simply looking to have a good time. How much can

you enjoy yourself if you are constantly keeping an eye on a toddler or tending to an infant? Chances are your wedding experience will be compromised. All in all, many other couples welcome the idea of having children at their weddings. Children represent the extended family and the next generation. They can add life to a party and look adorable dressed in party clothes. If your child is invited to a wedding, or you are the happy couple tying the knot, consider these tips. • Although children of all ages may be welcome, it’s often better to limit children to ages 4 and older, especially if they’ll be participating in the ceremony as a ring bearer or flower girl. Children of this age

are better able to take direction and are a little more mature. Check if your ceremony site has rules regarding children in the ceremony. • If you want to compromise when inviting children, allow them to be present at the church or synagogue, but restrict them from the reception. You can carefully word this on the invitation by saying “Adult Reception”. • Talk to the caterer to find out if there is a reduced fare on children’s dinners. This can save on costs, particularly if children aren’t likely to eat an adult meal. • Children invited to the wedding reception should be dressed accordingly for the formality of the event. Now is not the time for sneakers and jeans. • Provide entertainment for children during the lulls of the event. Kids may love to get up and dance, but become antsy during dinner courses. Pack along a goodie bag of games, DVDs and toys that can keep them occupied. • Find out if you can bring along a kid’s chaperone, namely a babysitter or friend who can keep an eye on the kids while you enjoy yourself.

Handling

divorced parents If your parents or your fiancé’s parents are divorced, there are some considerations to take in your wedding plans. If you are getting married, and your parents are divorced, it can pose a challenge. If there are tensions that still exist between divorced parents, then you will have to overcome the hurdle of keeping both of your parents happy. It can be hard not to hurt someone’s feelings. Here are some pointers on handling divorced parents:

1. Delegate responsibilities Neither one of your parents want to feel excluded from your wedding plans. If you don’t include both of them, then you will certainly hurt someone’s feelings - they will feel snubbed and unimportant, and they will feel like you are playing favourites. Luckily, weddings come with boat loads of responsibilities and tasks, so you can easily include both of your parents in different aspects of planning. Your father might want to help to pick out the reception site. Bring him along to meet the caterer, and talk about the layout of the space and the types of foods they offer. If you are having your reception at a restaurant, you could go out to lunch there to taste the food. Your mother could go with you to pick out flowers, or to look at your gown. Your father could help pick out invitations and book your limos. Your mother can go to your trial hair and make-up appointments. Basically, just consider

28  valleybride 2011

what aspects of the wedding would be more appealing to your mother, and which aspects would be more appealing to your father. If you are getting married at a church, you might consider asking both of them to pick out a reading for the ceremony.

2. Equal control over the guest list In a perfect world, the guest list would be divvied up into three parts: you and your fiancé would choose one third of the guests, your parents would choose another third, and your fiancé’s parents would pick out another third. When a divorce is involved, just make sure that you allow both of your parents to invite the same number of guests. If your parents are very recently divorced, you shouldn’t feel bad about asking them not to bring a date. You don’t want to have to come to grips with your parents beginning their single dating lives on your wedding day, and they should understand how that would make you feel awkward. However, if they are in relationships, then you should certainly allow them to bring their significant other.

3. Seating Obviously, if your parents are divorced and do not get along well, you do not want to force them to sit together and have a miserable night, and possibly an embarrassing fight. They should be seated on opposite sides of the church. Instead of having a bride side and a groom side, have somewhat free seating, except for the

4. Dancing At many weddings, the parents of the bride and groom will be asked to dance. Make sure that your band leader or disc jockey is well aware that your parents are divorced, and that they will not be dancing together. If you do not give him the heads-up, you could wind up with a very uncomfortable situation at the reception. They do not have to dance together - nobody will care - they just want to see the newlyweds dance!

5. Talk about it These are your parents, not strangers. If you are worried that there is going to be a problem, talk to them about it. They don’t want to be responsible for making your wedding unpleasant or making your engagement a bad memory. They love you, and if you tell them about your concerns, they will want to do what they can to help. n

seats assigned to special guests. It is not written in stone that the bride’s parents or the groom’s parents have to sit next to each other during the ceremony. They should be able to feel relaxed and comfortable as they watch you and your future spouse exchange vows; you do not want to detract from their happiness about your wedding. At the reception, they certainly should not sit at the same table. Just seat them at tables that are somewhere near the head table, and make sure that they are both happy with the other guests that they will be seated with.

“I do” to beautiful colour Treat her to a beautiful pair of champagne colour earrings. Natural colour diamonds, like these pink stones, are coveted, rare and make thoughtful gifts for special occasions.

“G

Engagements, weddings, anniversaries - these are the moments in our lives that make up so many of our strongest memories. Part of the reason these special occasions are so memorable is due to the lengths we go to set them apart from others - including the traditions and gifts used to mark the events. gems as a testament to our love and devotion. However, in the quest for something unique and breathtaking, many couples or gift-givers overlook the one truly priceless item they can purchase . . . natural coloured diamonds. White diamonds are often the gemstone of choice in engagement rings or anniversary bands, but there’s something rarer that can make the ultimate statement: natural coloured diamonds. According to historians, natural coloured diamonds have been prized throughout the years for their rarity and appeal. The Hope diamond or the Pumpkin diamond have

been coveted by the rich and famous, and it’s often been coloured diamonds that have adorned royalty and other fashion-forward individuals, such as Hollywood stars on the red carpet. Natural coloured diamonds are born in different diamond mines around the world. Their hues are formed by stray atoms present at the time of formation. Colours can range from very rare blues to pinks to yellows to chocolates. While diamonds are made to last forever, coloured diamond mines are hard to come by and their stock isn’t forever replenished. This contributes to the rarity of natural coloured diamonds. Incorporating natural coloured diamonds into a jewelry collection is as easy as using your imagination. Here are tips for gifting and using natural coloured diamonds: • Propose with a coloured diamond. Tie it into her favourite childhood colour or even the colour of her eyes. • Make the “something blue” at your wedding a beautiful pendant necklace or earrings adorned with a rare, blue hued diamond. • Tie a jewelry gift into his or her heritage. Irish eyes will be smiling with a green coloured diamond. Or tell your loved one you consider him or her to be royalty with a regal purple diamond. • Celebrate traditional anniversary milestones with coloured diamonds. For example, “leather” on the 3rd anniversary can be a chocolate coloured diamond, while “candy” on the 6th anniversary can be exemplified by a cotton candy pink coloured diamond. • Show her how much you care on your anniversary by offering coloured diamonds that coordinate with the birthstones of your children. • Gift him with a diamond ring or cufflinks that feature the colours of his favourite sports team. Because a coloured diamond’s brilliance and colour is best enhanced by expert stone cutting, one should only use reliable natural coloured diamond gemologists for purchase. Moonlit

nuptials

C

ouples are constantly struggling to find something new and different in terms of planning their wedding. While the new trend seems to focus on distant locations and exotic themes, sometimes the answer is as simple as a change in time.

PHOTO LEVEL 6 IMAGES

Couples are finding imaginative ways to say their vows, such as a night ceremony. After all, what is more romantic than old-fashioned candlelight? Couples strive to keep the romance in their big day alive, and for some, the perfect solution is a sunrise wedding with a short and sweet breakfast reception. Often, these types of weddings are seen in beautiful countrysides, in lovely gardens, or even on quiet beaches in order to preserve the romance of the day. H o w e v e r, g e t t i n g up before the sun is exhausting - not just for the guests, but for the bride and groom and any and all service individuals at the event. Not everyone can accomplish a dawn ceremony. It seems that more and more people are turning into night owls. If you can’t stand the thought of getting up early to say your “I do’s”, consider a moonlit ceremony. For some people, a ceremony that takes place outdoors under a moonlit sky brings to mind tales of secret

romantic rendezvous in the dead of night. For these ceremonies, anything that may require a signature should be done beforehand, as moonlight and candles are very poor substitutes for electric light. However, you may consider old-fashioned looking lamps or hanging lanterns, which can provide you with better lighting. After all, the ceremony does have to be read, as do your vows if you’ve chosen to write your own. Also, consider having a dessert-only reception, given the time of your ceremony. If you choose to make your ceremony and reception adults only, cocktails would also be an appropriate option. The great thing about the options available for weddings in this day in age is that you’re not limited to anything but your budget and your imagination. Your wedding can take place anywhere, any day, and at

any time! Just remember that the more inconvenient the time of your wedding is, the less likely people will show up. That’s fine,

if that’s what you want, but isn’t the whole point of a big wedding ceremony to share the special day with those you love? n

Wedding Favour

M

ost couples plan to thank guests for attending their weddings by issuing favours at the end of the festivities. Being creative and tying the favour into the theme of the wedding shows you care. Wedding favours can be anything the couple desires. Throughout the years there have been some favour standards that many couples fall back on when they’re short on ideas. Matchbooks printed with the wedding date, Jordan almonds wrapped in tulle, swizzle sticks, and candles are all classic favour options. If you desire something unique, consider these options. Candy: Skip the almonds and go for something guests are sure to enjoy ... chocolate. Custom engrave chocolate bars to feature your wedding date information and your names. Or how about setting up a candy bar where guests can fill up their own goodie bags with favourite treats? Useful tools: Instead of the swizzle sticks or coaster sets that will end up collecting dust, think about household items guests can really use. What about an ice cream scoop so memories of your

wedding will always be sweet? Who doesn’t love to barbecue? A barbecue sauce basting set will be a grill-side must. Depending on budget, you also can choose ice buckets, an engraved napkin holder or a picnic basket filled with picnic essentials. Plants: Send guests home with something they can plant, whether flower seeds, seedlings or a small houseplant. As your love grows, so will the plants in every guest’s home. Fun ideas: Having a beach wedding? Custom-print labels for lip balm or sunscreen. Winter brides and grooms may add a tag to earmuffs or scarves that give the wedding date details. If you love a particular musical artist, give guests a CD with favourite songs. Let them eat cake: Inquire whether your baker can make miniature wedding cakes in the likeness of your larger one. Then everyone can take home a replica. Personalized photo: One of the easiest ways for guests to remember your wedding is to have a photo reminder. Engraved frames with a photo of the happy couple will be classic gifts. n

Adorable in party clothes continued from Page 27 • The bride and groom may want to set up a “kiddie corral” area in the reception room, particularly if they plan to invite a lot of young children. Put down foam interlocking mats and fence off the area so kids are contained. • If the wedding will be open to children, consider adjusting the hours so that it takes place earlier in the day. This way parents will have time to get their children to bed on or close to their normal bedtime. n

Budget Wedding

30 Ways to Save Money on Your Wedding

We get it. Weddings are expensive. But you can cut costs without anyone missing what’s missing. Reception 1. Cut the guest list. This will slash your catering costs and save on invitations and even the number of centerpieces.

2. Think off-peak season and save thousands!

12. Serve entree duets. 3. Hold your ceremony and reception in one spot - it will cut travel time for vendors you pay by the hour.

14. Offer beer, wine, and a signature cocktail instead of a full bar.

5. Have bigger tables so you need fewer centerpieces and tablecloths.

15. Serve comfort foods like barbecue chicken, mac and cheese, and corn. It’s fun and often cheaper.

6. Shop the off-season for extra decor - get modern black vases on sale after Halloween and pretty pink ones after Valentine’s Day.

16. Skip the champagne toast.

7. Use more greenery than flowers.

Cakes 17. Order a small one or two-tiered cake and then supplement cake with a larger sheet cake (hidden back in the kitchen).

8. Swap out costly flowers - did you know peonies can be five times more expensive than roses?

18. Keep the add-ons simple.

9. Stick to just one or two kinds of flowers.

20. Reuse ceremony flowers for the cake table.

10. Buy flowers that are in season.

21. Skip exotic fillings like guava and mango.

11. Include non-florals, like lanterns.

36  valleybride 2011

13. Skip the main course - apps and drinks are fine too.

4. Skip the Saturday wedding.

Flowers

Do-it-yourself centerpieces made with crystal glasses and your imagination can save you money and they look great!

Food & Drink

19. Use fresh flowers, not sugar ones.

Stationery & Favours 22. Get single-page invitations to save on postage. 23. Give out one favour per couple. 24. Make your cake the favours. 25. Have favours double as escort cards. 26. E-mail your save-the-dates. 27. Make your own menu cards, escort cards, and wedding favour packaging.

Photo, Video & Music 28. Have a photographer you love but can’t afford the prices? Ask them if they have an associate shooter who will do your wedding for less. 29. Opt for a smaller band. 30. Hire a band or DJ who can do both the ceremony and the reception. - Meredith Bodgas

wedding expense

T

he average couple will spend between $20,000 and $40,000 on their wedding, a figure that does not include additional expenses such as an engagement ring or honeymoon. For many, that is 50 per cent more than they have actually budgeted for the occasion. Underestimating wedding expenses can lead to financial distress even before the marriage has begun. In the not-so-distant past, weddings were largely financed by the bride and her parents. Things are much different now. Most weddings now are paid for by the bride and groom with little contribution from family. Young couples just starting out in life may find that weddings are more of a financial commitment than originally anticipated. Planning for the expected and unexpected - can help couples survive wedding expenses.

Savings Plan Starting to save early is essential.

38  valleybride 2011

survival

Once you have set the date, begin saving immediately. Even if the wedding won’t be a lavish affair, every wedding has some unexpected expenses. • To save, consider curbing recreational spending. Cut dinners out, trips to the movies or nonessential purchases. Place the money you would’ve spent into a wedding account. • Consider having automatic transfers or deposits into an account for forced savings. Many employers can deposit a portion of your paycheck into a separate account. Instead of a Christmas Club savings plan, you can have a Wedding Club. • Eliminate debt right away. It may seem counterproductive, but sometimes you have to spend money to save money. Instead of racking up high interest rate charges on credit card balances, pay down credit cards or other bills you have. Once you are in the clear, you can focus more on

saving for the wedding. • If need be, have a long engagement so that you have ample time to save.

Setting a Budget Many couples want a dream wedding but do not have the finances to afford a platinum event. But that doesn’t mean they still can’t have a lavish, beautiful wedding. Setting a budget means you can prioritize what you want and what you will pass up. It also provides a savings goal and a firm deadline. • Shop around for the average rates of vendors in your area. Work on the big-ticket items first before focusing on the smaller details. Once you have average prices, you can begin to estimate your budget. • Add up the average costs of all of the items on your wish list. If it seems out of range, start removing things you can do without. For example, can you have a brunch reception instead

REDBARK PHOTO

Ceremonies of an evening sit-down dinner to scale back costs? • Always set aside a little extra for those incidental expenses, such as tips for the waitstaff and donation to the church - items you may not think to factor in. • Don’t expect wedding gifts to cover the cost of your wedding. While some guests are quite generous, others may not even cover the cost of their meal.

Prioritize A dream wedding is a marriage between desires and reality. Today it is possible to recreate the look of designer gowns and other details with lessexpensive options. Figure out your priorities and work from there. Consider these cost-saving options. • Think about where you will be living after you are married. A residence

takes priority over a lavish wedding. • Have the wedding party carry fresh-flower bouquets, but use less-expensive silk flowers or even fruit as centerpieces. • Ask your baker to create a small wedding display cake you can use for your photos and serve guests from a much cheaper sheet cake that is hidden in the kitchen. • Get married on a weekday or at an earlier time of day. • Limit the bar to wine, beer and soda to save on the expense of top-shelf liquors. • Register for unconventional gifts, such as contributing to the honeymoon. • Handle some items yourself, such as favours or catering, to keep costs down. n

Old Hollywood look brings drama back to nuptials

T

hough some brides are choosing simpler wedding dresses these days, elaborate lace and beaded gowns are still very popular. The romance and beauty of an exquisite lace floor length gown can’t be duplicated. In fact, bridal experts say that romantic designs are most popular this season. Romantic gowns reminiscent of old Hollywood glamour are a hot trend now. The birdcage veil (pictured left) is making a huge splash. Gowns that look like they are pulled from the pages of a Jane Austin novel are

also a popular trend. Larger sleeves and lots of flowing silk add more drama to the look. However, lace, beading, and feminine fabrics aren’t just for wedding gowns. These glamorous touches are also carrying over into wedding decorations, invitations and more. The feminine embellishments of lace and beads are being added to table runners and chair covers. Many couples are spending a little extra to cover the tables at their wedding reception with silky white cloths topped with lace overlays. If you are looking for an easy way to make your wedding reception a little more glitzy, keep the decorations simple but invest in renting glamorous chair covers.

Chair covers can come in a variety of exquisite fabrics, from fancy lace to plush velvet. Use a mixture of white and red roses to complete the look.
