Multi Use Path

Parks and Rec Master Plan

We got another grant! This one just shy of $40,000 from Western Economic Diversification Canada, to help us fix some of the root damage that is making our path a little unsafe. The project will start in the New Year and should be up and running well before our busy summer season. Note that there may be some sections that will be impassable for short periods of time, but please bear with us. It’ll be a huge improvement once it is all complete!

We’d like to thank everyone who attended our Community Consultation evening on November 29. It was a great turn out with close to 200 people coming out to give their input on not only parks and recreation initiatives, but also to help with the Official Community Plan review. It was a great community event with Wildside cooking up a storm, and Liam Tilitzky and Katie Jo Crocker from the Grade 12 French class bussing tables.

A reminder to all landowners along the MUP, please ensure vegetation is brushed back to improve sightlines along the MUP, and snow is cleared from driveways that cross the MUP.

We’re Getting Noticed!

Early in the Fall we had a call from reccies from the Regional District of Nanaimo who had heard good things about our skatepark and bike park. They came out for a tour and were REALLY impressed with our facilities, and particularly the process we went through in the designing and building of our parks. This is a big pat on the back to YOU, our fantastic community, who supported our fundraising, came out to work bees, helped on the design and gave us encouragement throughout. We rock! We were featured in the last edition of the BC Recreation and Parks magazine as being “a community that is leading the way” with our social innovations and partnerships. Highlighted was a very sturdy relationship with VIHA. The New York Times featured our Bike Skills Park in their travel section, citing it as a draw for bike enthusiasts. You can view the article online at http://www.nytimes.com/ slideshow/2012/10/07/travel/20121007_SURFACING-3. html. And our Parks and Recreation Director was recently invited to participate in a provincial roundtable of 17 local government leaders, to give input on tools and resources local governments could use to better serve their communities to become “healthy”. It’s great to see recognition that the “health” definition is broadening to include more than just physical health!

WINTER /SPRING 2013

We will be taking your input and incorporating it into a first draft which will then go through another public process before we put our hand to the final draft. Your input is always welcome. Feel free to send us an email or give us a call with your thoughts. We’d like to have the final report before Council in the Spring of 2013.
