No contest, no prizes, no pressure – just a chance to perform on a big stage for an attentive crowd. This is Surrey Shines, a youth talent showcase that will fill Surrey Arts Centre’s main stage with song and dance this Saturday night (Feb. 2). This year, 18 young bands, solo performers and dance groups are featured during the annual event, presented by the Youth Arts Council of Surrey. Surrey Shines is not about finding the best performer, it is about showcasing all of the young artists equally, “because they are all extremely talented in very different ways,” said Brie Hemingway, co-ordinator of the event. “Rather than compete against each other, the performers are working together to put on the best show possible” on a pro-level stage, she noted. “Some of them have had experience on a big stage, but others have only played smaller venues, like coffee shops.” Hemingway is among a group of 10 Youth Arts Council members involved in staging this year’s version of Surrey Shines. They’re helped with the task by Arts Council of Surrey backers, including Ellie King, Carol Girardi and others. Auditions for Surrey Shines were held this month at the Tom Lee Music store in Guildford and Newton Cultural Centre. “(The performers) all seem very excited to be there,” Hemingway added. “You’d think they’d be nervous about it all, but

Northern Rain was invited to play
Surrey’s Canada Day event last summer, and two of the band members met headliner Sam Roberts. “He told them that he liked their set, which was pretty thrilling for them,” Stockwell said. Tickets for Surrey Shines range from $12 for students to $15 for adults, via the box office at Surrey Arts Centre (604-501-5566, tickets.surrey.ca). “The theatre seats around 400 people,” Hemingway said, “and it wasn’t a full house
last year. We’re hoping for a half full this year, at least. We want as many people as possible to support these performers.… It’ll be a great show, for sure.” The full list of Surrey Shines 2013 performers is as follows: Northern Rain (band), Spiral Dance Apprentice (dance group), Hayley, Allyson & Kristy (a capella trio), Alex Odribege (solo dancer), Richard Tichelman (solo singer), Just for Kicks Jazz Group (dance group), Tommy Alto (band), Surrey Dance Centre Youth Company (dance group), Brodie Marples (singer/ dancer), The Cut Losses (band), Ava Carich (solo singer), Spiral Dance Company (dance group), Kevin Tingzon (solo singer), Celine Brown (solo dancer), Ben Dunnill (solo singer), Emma Willey (solo dancer), DRS Bboy Crew (dance group) and Ministry of Misfits (band).
