Surrey’s Holland Park could be a stage for a “major international recording artist” in May. Concert producers Live Nation Canada and Donnelly & Associates expect up to 25,000 people would buy tickets for the gated event, which requires approval from Surrey city council. The one-night show would feature a performer “who has won and/or been nominated for multiple Grammy, American Music, BRIT and MTV awards,” according to a report that was expected to be considered by council Monday night (visit thenownewspaper.com for the latest). “Due to a confidentiality agreement, the name of the artist cannot be disclosed until the event promoter, Live Nation, releases the

information publicly.” The proposed concert date is either Friday, May 24 or Saturday, May 25, depending on the availability of the performer, the report notes. If approved, the show would see performances start at 5 p.m. and end at 10 p.m. The proposal includes the sale of alcohol in a fenced area of the park. Holland Park, located just south of the Central City tower in Whalley, has played host to several large musical events in recent years, including the yearly Fusion Festival and Surrey’s Winter Olympic celebration site in 2010. In a phone interview Friday, Paul Haagenson, president of Live Nation Canada, said the proposal is “totally speculative.” Holland Park, he said, has great access to transit and is also a beautiful venue for concerts. “We’re just looking for direction from the city to see if it’s even a possibility to do a show there,” Haagenson added. “We would have to know that the park is open and a show could be done there before we could get into (naming) bands and whether it will happen.”
