On the heels of a hot (sold out) “Valentine’s Blues Extravaganza” Saturday with Powder Blues Band and James “Buddy” Rogers, White Rock Blues Society has booked guitarist Bill Johnson at the Pacific Inn Hotel bar for a March 23 concert date. Five years ago, Johnson played a sold-out date at Crescent Beach Legion hall. “His band delivers a tight and powerful sound,” recalled Rod Dranfield, president of the society. LOCAL JUNO NOMINEES
Juno Award nominees were announced Tuesday, and some of the musicians have roots in the South Fraser region. Two of five nominees for Instrumental Album of the Year are Five Alarm Funk, which recorded Rock the Sky in White Rock, and Pugs & Crows, powered by the guitar playing of North Delta-raised Cole Schmidt. Hedley and its Surrey-raised singer Jacob Hoggard is in the running for three awards, and Abbotsford’s Victoria Duffield, who spent a great deal of time in Cloverdale honing her singing skills, is up for Pop Album of the Year. Chad Brownlee and Dallas Smith, both of whom call Langley home, are in the hunt for Country Album of the Year honours, and Metal/Hard Rock Album nominee Devin Townsend Project hails from New Westminster. urrey Arts Centre’s main stage sure was rocking with 54-40 on Saturday night, especially during the band’s second set of electric hits – an endless string of them. A significant number of people jumped out of their seats to dance in front of the stage, something rarely seen at the Bear Creek Park venue. During the encore, lead guitarist Dave Genn wore a “SRY” baseball jersey in honour of his roots in Surrey (Crescent Beach, specifically) as the band grooved a mashup of “Love You All” and the Stones’ “Miss You” (which had guest keyboardist Tom Hooper, of Grapes of Wrath fame, on lead vocals doing Mick). Genn’s cool shirt arrived via Don Pitcairn and his headline-making surreyshirts.com website. “We have added a ‘Bands’ section to the top header of our website, looking to promote Surrey bands and others playing in the big city and outfit them with our styling gear,” Pitcairn told me. “Would love to see our merch on stage or in videos, helping to increase pride in Surrey and efforts to reduce or eliminate gun and gang violence.”
