The 43rd annual Polar Bear Swim in White Rock drew hundreds of participants Tuesday afternoon, and even more onlookers. Rock Lions Club president Ed Alps, an organizer of the event. “The weather was just awesome, it was beautiful and it was just great,” he said. Alps said around 400 people registered for the event, but there were more who went in the water on their own accord, making it difficult to pinpoint the number of participants. “We can’t estimate the number that went in,” he said. “There were over 400 that signed up but it could be twice that

(who) actually went in.” Alps also noted it was the first swim that didn’t involve Don Miller, the longtime event organizer and Lions Club member. Miller died in September. “We missed Don Miller – he passed away in September and he did this for over 40 years,” said Alps. “However, his family was there too, so they were still carrying on his tradition.”

A Cloverdale man was murdered on New Year’s Eve, in Langley. Homicide investigators aren’t revealing how Cole Adam Manning, 40, died, or what they think the motive was. The Langley RCMP found his body in a basement suite rented by the 24-year-old suspect, Jason Terrence Brewer, in the 19800-block of 69th Avenue, at about 7:30 a.m. Police aren’t revealing who made the call. Brewer was arrested less than two hours later in Aldergrove, on 264th Street just south of Highway 1. Brewer has been charged with seconddegree murder. “The victim and suspect are believed to be friends,” said Sgt. Jennifer Pound, spokeswoman for the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. “Investigators continue to explore the motive for this homicide. At this point we can say this is not gang related.”

SkyTrain seats slashed A 63-year-old Surrey man who was employed as a contract maintenance worker for SkyTrain is accused of slashing 480 SkyTrain seats. Terald Nicholas Gorecki has been charged with mischief over $5,000 and is expected to appear in court in February. Transit Police spokeswoman Anne Drennan said the damage to the seats, cut with a box cutter between August and November, is estimated to be more than $45,000. “The investigation required members of the Transit Police Crime Reduction Unit to review hundreds of hours of video tape,” Drennan said.

The Cloverdale Curling Club is hosting the BC Scotties again, from Jan. 14 to 20. Manager Judy MacKinnon said the club is looking forward to welcoming the return of the curlers, fans and sponsors. “We have a great facility and we have excellent ice,” she said. “I think hosting the event in 2011 put the Cloverdale Curling Club on the curling fan and curler map, so we’re happy to have the Scotties return.” Super skip Kelly Scott, who won at Cloverdale in 2011, will be back in action with a slightly different team lineup to the winning team from that year. The remaining competing teams have yet to be decided.
