Natural Wonders

OCEANSIDE Cathedral Grove

Listed as one of the most accessible old-growth temperate rainforests in the world, Cathedral Grove was described in 1941 as the greatest scenic tourist asset in B.C. Back in the early 1980s, it was the location for the Hollywood prehistoric epic ‘Quest for Fire.’ Imagine what an ant feels like as you stand beneath these towering giants and explore the forest floor along beautifully groomed trails.

Englishman River Falls

During the rainy season, these falls gush through tiny crevices with enough force to move logs and gouge rock. A suspension bridge over the falls allows visitors to safely experience the wrath of nature so close that the spray will engulf you. Not far up the road is Little Qualicum Falls Provincial Park. Both parks are ideal locations for outdoor activities such as camping and hiking.

Brant Geese

Every year, these tiny black geese make the trek from Mexico to Alaska. Along the way, they make a stop to fuel up on the herring roe that washes up on the beaches of Oceanside, as do herds of barking sea lions and clouds of gulls. This scene is so spectacular that we have an entire festival dedicated to

it. The Brant Festival occurs in early spring (March and April) and visitors come from all over the globe to witness this phenomenon. It is absolutely stunning to see these little black birds arriving for their holiday on the beach.

Notch Hill

While a relatively short walk, this trail is rated moderate for hikers but the end result is worth it. Located in Nanoose Bay, you will soar with the eagles above the Strait of Georgia while taking in stunning ocean and mountain vistas. Because Nanoose Bay has one of the driest climates in Canada.
