Firefighter makes cut

A man from Maple Ridge is one of the top 15 contenders for Canada’s Handyman Challenge. Maple Ridge firefighter Rhys Carmichael was selected out of hundreds who tried out for the HGTV television show. In the show’s second season the stakes are higher and the competition fierce. This time out, the winner takes home a $25,000 prize. In the tryouts, Carmichael and his fellow contenders were given a single piece of plywood to fashion into something unique. He said he was hopeful, in spite of some tough questioning from the judges about the built-in ironing board he crafted. The top five contestants from auditions in Halifax, Vancouver, and Toronto move on to the finals in Toronto, where they face intense challenges, demanding expectations, and tough critiques by judges. From building freestanding patio swings in under two hours, re-upholstering a chair in just 30 minutes, and facing the judges for one-on-one trivia, the challenges this season will test speed, expertise, and precision to determine which contestant will walk away $25,000 richer. “The calibre of contestants this season is just amazing,” said HGTV celebrity judge Bryan Baeumler (Leave It To Bryan).

The Maple Ridge public art steering committee commissioned a new piece of public art, that was unveiled in the fall at the corner of 224th Street and Lougheed Highway in front of Westminster Savings. The design for the art piece titled Balance was made by Claudia Cuesta and Bill Baker, who are known as art.site. The piece cost the District $20,000, and $20,000 was donated by Westminster Savings.
