by Sylver McLaren Community youth groups in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows were invited to make money for their own organization by selling tickets for the Rotary Duck Race. One group did especially well and sold 200 tickets. Ridge Meadows Speedskating Association tries to raise about $10,000 a year to subsidize the ice costs, said RMSSA vicepresident Trish MacKay.

“I think it’s just fabulous,” exclaimed MacKay. “Originally we were told we would get to keep 50 per cent of the ticket sales, with the other portion going towards KidSport,” said MacKay. However, she heard that businesses have sold so many duck tickets that the participating groups might be able to keep 100 per cent of their own sales. If RMSSA gets to keep 100 per cent of the ticket sales that will be $2,000 or 20 per cent of the yearly fundraising efforts. “We usually do bottle drives, pub nights, raffles, and competitions, but this was so much better – better prizes can sell more tickets,” MacKay said.
