Pipe band plays with McCartney BY

The Delta Police Pipe Band shared the stage with a music legend over the weekend when it joined Sir Paul McCartney during his concert in Vancouver. The band was brought on stage to provide bagpipes and percussion for Mull of Kintyre, a song from his Wings days, which the 70-year-old rock legend performed as part of a second encore Sunday night in front on 40,000 fans at B.C. Place. “It was spectacular,” said pipe major John Ralston. “It was the quickest five minutes of my life.” Ralston said the band had been in contact with Live Nation, the company that organized Sunday’s show, a couple months ago after the concert was announced. Three weeks ago, Ralston said, he got another call saying the pipe band’s appearance was going ahead. The band rehearsed with McCartney’s band on Saturday and then again with McCartney himself on Sunday afternoon. “He was great,” Ralston said of meeting and performing with him. “He was really down to earth and really nice to work with.”

Five charged after dial-a-dope operation busted BY

Several local men are facing drug charges after police broke up a dial-a-dope operation. After a six-month investigation, Delta police, with assistance from the Richmond RCMP drug section, executed a search warrant in Richmond earlier this month. Evidence seized led investigators to arrest and charge four Ladner residents as well as a Richmond
man. Arrested were: Richard Joly, 21, Michael Galley, 37, Richard Jenkins, 27, and Nickolas Drew, 19, all of Ladner, as well as Christian (Chris) Cameron, 37, of Richmond. All are facing charges of trafficking in a controlled substance and Cameron is facing an additional charge of possession for the purpose of trafficking. Four have been released on bail with numerous court-ordered
conditions, while the fifth remains in custody pending his next court appearance. “This is a good day for Delta,” said Delta police Insp. Lorne Pike. “This investigation resulted in the suppression of a significant drug operation in the South Delta area that had a direct impact in the community. “Delta police drug members removed a significant amount of drugs from being distributed on our streets and have brought
those supplying and trafficking in controlled substances in this case before the courts.” • In an unrelated bust, a Canadian man is facing drug charges after border guards found 33 kilograms of marijuana in his truck at the Point Roberts crossing over the weekend. Canadian Border Services officers stopped the 54-year-old B.C. resident after he was seen driving erratically in the lanes leading up to the inspection booths and
attempting to turn around. The officers came across the marijuana stuffed into 11 garbage bags. Delta police were called in to assist at around 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, said department spokesperson Const. Ciaran Feenan. Officers arrested the man and later released him on a promise to appear in court. He is scheduled to appear in federal court in Surrey in February.
