Eli ‘Tigerman’ Williams is a graduate of Delta Secondary.

Ladner’s own Elvis is off to Memphis. Professional Elvis Presley impersonator Eli “Tigerman” Williams is in Tennessee to take part in a trio of competitions and other events celebrating Elvis Week. Starting tomorrow, Williams, a life-long Elvis fan who began singing professionally about six years ago, will be putting on his jumpsuits to compete against

other Elvis tribute artists from around the world at the Ultimate Elvis championship as well as the King of the World and Images of the King competitions. Williams is a fast-rising star in Elvis tribute circles, having won the professional division at the Penticton Elvis Festival last year and a major competition in Hawaii earlier this year. Last month he finished fourth in a strong field of almost 30 at the Heart of the King competition in Las Vegas. “My experience at Heart of the

King was fantastic, being able to experience just a small fraction of what Elvis got to experience every night for 837 straight sold out nights was incredible. To be on that stage, and to share it with such talented performers, was all at the same time gratifying, eerie, humbling, and truly amazing,” he says. “After having spent a great deal of my youth watching videos and clips on YouTube of Elvis performing on that very stage, then See ELVIS page 3

B.C.’s police complaint commissioner this week announced a public inquiry into the conduct of two Delta police officers. In September 2011, the Office of the Police Complaint Commissioner received a complaint alleging that constables Aaron Hill and Aaron McRae tackled a man off his bike. It was alleged they repeatedly smashed his face into the cement and kicked him in the ribs during an arrest in North Delta on Sept. 17, 2011. The complaint alleged abuse of authority, damage to property of others, deceit and neglect of duty on the part of the two officers. The complaint has already been extensively reviewed. Initially it was forwarded to the Delta Police Department’s professional standards section where it was found only the neglect of duty allegation was substantiated. In December 2012, the police complaint commissioner decided to send the complaint to a judicial review after determining there was a reasonable basis to believe the initial decision was incorrect. In June, after reviewing the case, retired judge Jakob S. De Villiers dismissed all the allegations against the officers. On Wednesday, police complaint commissioner Stan Lowe announced he came to the determination that a public hearing is required. Delta police spokesperson Sgt. Ciaran Feenan said the Office of the Police Complaint department supports civilian oversight. Both officers remain on active duty. A date for the public hearing has not yet been set.

Harbour should embrace past Amid all the talk of waterfront revitalization, Michael Duncan says only option is to restore it as it once was BY

JESSICA KERR

jkerr@delta-optimist.com

Long-time local resident Michael Duncan says there is only one option for the revitalization of Ladner’s waterfront — restore it as it was. “Where are our leaders to dictate to developers not to let them dictate to us?” he asked recently. “There is no other concept for the redevelopment of the Ladner Harbour except one — restore it as it was.” Delta council recently approved a pair of bylaws aimed at attracting investment to redevelop the area. Delta has been working on revitalizing the waterfront area for several years and in 2011 announced the selection of Quay Property Management to submit a detailed proposal for the redevelopment of civicowned properties along Chisholm Street. However, that idea was abandoned a year later with the municipality opting to offer incentives in an effort to stimulate development in the area. “Ladner Harbour started out as a home port for fishermen,” Duncan said. “So, how can you go wrong if you restore the harbour as it was... a fishing harbour with all the romantic memories of the past.” Duncan, who has lived in South Delta for more than 40 years, has experience with restoring harbours.

GORD GOBLE

Michael Duncan, a former curator of the Delta Museum and Archives, would like to see Ladner Harbour restored to its past glory, but the new buildings would house shops, offices, galleries and more. He served as executive director of the Vancouver Maritime Museum and was responsible for securing funds for the multi-million dollar Heritage Harbour. He has also been a guest speaker at the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic in Halifax, the South Street Maritime Museum and Historical Society in New York and Mystic Seaport,

one of the largest maritime museums in the world, in Connecticut. He envisions net lofts, net sheds and boat buildings all built on the exterior as they used to be. “But on the interior they could be offices, art galleries, shops — retail in any shape or form.” Duncan said there could be provincial and federal

money available to help fund such a project, especially if it incorporated a fishing museum. With help from the fishing industry, the revitalized harbour could moor historic fish boats that would add a visual impact for locals and tourists. “This is the last site anywhere in the Lower Mainland to preserve our

heritage,” he said. “Do not make the horrific mistake that Steveston has done.” He said countless stores selling identical souvenirs, knick-knacks and ice cream cones have marred the natural beauty of the Fraser River. “What the hell does that say about creative genius?” Aside from the cannery museum to the west and

the original buildings to the east, Duncan said, “The new developments are not only sterile and visually dull but there is not one item of the original fishing community on show.” He said he would like to see the restoration of Ladner’s waterfront bring pride to the village while adding an attraction for tourists and residents.

Also continuing to work on his voice, he sings at pubs, birthday parties, seniors homes and corporate events, but especially enjoys going to festivals and competitions to see how his evolving skills measure up against other seasoned Elvis tribute artists. He says Elvis singers prefer to call themselves tribute artists rather than impersonators. “I really think the primary difference between an Elvis tribute artist (ETA) and an Elvis impersonator is that the impersonator wants to be Elvis, whereas the ETA just wants to pay tribute through performing his music, carrying his likeness on stage and by trying to emulate a small fraction of the charisma he had through their performance. “As is well documented,

Elvis, as with everyone, had personal problems, and I, nor a lot of people would want that kind of strain put onto our personal lives and I truly believe the job or goal of the tribute artist is to have their audience forget about everything else and just remember the good times.” Most tribute artists who take what they do seriously will spend big money on costumes from one of the handful of reputable Elvis costume makers. A simpler jumpsuit from the early 1970s can cost $1,500, while a copy of some of the more intricate outfits Elvis wore in the later years can run upwards of $6,000. In addition to the contests, thousands will be flocking to Memphis to take part in many other Elvisrelated events, including an Aug. 15 candlelight vigil outside Graceland, Elvis’s home.

getting to be given the opportunity to sing those songs on that stage was truly incredible.” The Ultimate Elvis competition is especially prestigious, considered the World Series of Elvis contests because contestants must earn a spot by winning a qualifying contest. Williams first competed at Ultimate Elvis last year after winning the Penticton festival and earned another chance to compete after winning in Hawaii. The Delta Secondary grad, who has a regular job as a graphic artist, sings the 1970s jumpsuit era of “The King” after having studied every subtle move and on stage nuance. Williams has also gone so far as to take up karate like Elvis did in order to better emulate the many moves.

Council to discuss three-hour parking limit for Ladner core

Enforcement proposed as employees fill spots intended for customers BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Parking all day in Ladner Village will soon be a thing of the past. A staff report to be discussed by Delta council Monday recommends the municipality enforce a new three-hour restriction on streets throughout the Ladner core. Currently, some streets have two-hour signs while others one-hour parking limits, but they do little because of a lack of enforcement. The lack of parking has been an issue for years in the village. Business and office employees are seen as the biggest culprits in taking up valuable customer spots. The problem was exacerbated earlier this year when management of Ladner Harbour Centre served notice to businesses whose employees park in the shopping centre’s parking lot that they would be towed. Coun. Jeannie Kanakos, who will be acting mayor at Monday’s meeting, told the Optimist the new three-hour limit is a good compromise following consultation

Parking is often at a premium in Ladner Village. with the Ladner Business Association. “That would give me time to go for lunch, do some shopping and it’s throughout the core of Ladner, so it’s consistent,” she said. The only exception would be a 20-minute limit in front of the Ladner bottle depot. Kanakos also noted an LBA suggestion that wasn’t included in the staff recommendations is to waive the restrictions for veterans. That may end up as an amendment during the

council vote, she said. Earlier this year, LBA president Jackey Zellweger noted in a letter to council that members voted in favour of an enforced threehour limit throughout the downtown core. Zellweger told the Optimist local employees need to be aware they must park their vehicles elsewhere, including Memorial Park, which is only a short walk away. “When they park in front of their retail store and they (owners) see that car parked out there at nine and then

Search and rescue volunteers help injured boater The volunteers of the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 8 Delta were conducting training manoeuvres just west of Point Roberts on Monday afternoon when a May Day call came in on their VHF. Volunteers were dispatched immediately to Cabbage Island, just off Saturna Island in the southern Gulf Islands region, and reached a large pleasure boat at anchor within 15 minutes. The crew found a 67-year-old man lying

on the back deck of the vessel. He had fallen off the top deck of the boat and collided with the boat’s railing before hitting the water. The man had suffered multiple bruises and some broken bones. With the assistance of Canadian Coast Guard Ganges base, the patient was transferred to a spine board and then transported to a waiting ambulance crew near Sidney on Vancouver Island.

they look out there at four and same car is still there, that’s the problem. People who want to shop have commented that they’ve driven around and couldn’t find a parking spot, so they don’t bother,” she said. The parking debate has only intensified as the municipality looked for ways to revitalize the Ladner waterfront and downtown core, recently approving guidelines to encourage redevelopment. According to a consultant, a clear parking strategy is needed for the area because current capacity needs to be balanced with additional pressures that may come from redevelopment, particularly “destination” uses. A Delta parking review a decade ago found Ladner businesses were not in favour of pay parking as a management tool. Delta remains one of the few, if not only, Lower Mainland municipality not to have street or lot pay parking.

Delta-based construction trades people will soon be able to get a single business licence to work in several municipalities. Delta council has approved bylaws to establish the inter-municipal business licence program pilot project. Under the program, local businesses will still require a Delta business licence, however, starting Oct. 1, those in the construction industry will be able to purchase an inter-municipal business licence as well. The additional licence will allow businesses to work in any of the six participating

The program is aimed at saving time and money for construction-related businesses that operate in multiple municipalities. The bylaw gives any of the participating municipalities the right to suspend an inter-municipal licence, however, only the issuing municipality would have the power to cancel one. “Although Delta will lack complete control over each inter-municipal business licence, sufficient safeguards are in place

It’s estimated Delta’s share of the projected revenue will be about $122,000, which is approximately $11,000 more than the current business licence fees obtained from construction trades based outside of Delta that operate within the municipality. The Delta Chamber of Commerce praised the move. “For a company in the construction sector operating in multiple communities the many thousands of dollars and time spent to take out an individual business licence for each community every year is a great burden,” said executive director Peter Roaf.

MURPHY’S LAW It’s truly a shame that civic politicians appear to have closed the door on the idea of acquiring the other half of Paterson Park. Much has been made lately of preserving our past. It’s why Delta bucked up in a big way to save a century-old barn and why the fall of every old farmhouse is publicly lamented. As far as historic sites go, however, I’m not sure there’s one that can match the old racetrack at the entrance to Ladner. Not only is Paterson Park at a prominent location that thousands pass by daily, but the half-mile track that rings the property dates back to the late 1800s when harness racing was in its infancy in these parts. That track was established within a decade of Delta being incorporated way back in 1879, so when you’re talking about historic sites, it’s among a select few. Yet there’s reluctance by Delta council to buy Kwantlen’s half (Delta already owns the western portion), the price being the obvious stumbling block. Assessed at $11 million, the site is too rich for municipal leaders, who don’t want to go into debt to make the transaction happen. I have to give Mayor Lois Jackson’s administration marks for adopting a payas-you-go approach to civic financing, but, as I’ve mentioned before, there’s good debt and then there’s bad debt. Most of us wouldn’t own a home if we didn’t take out a mortgage, which doesn’t strike me as a whole lot different than borrowing in order to acquire a critical piece of Delta’s history. Then there’s also the issue of priorities. In the last year or so Delta has spent $4 million on a much-needed animal shelter, another $4 million on a less than imperative upgrade to the intersection of Ladner Trunk Road and Arthur Drive as well as almost $2 million to refurbish and relocate an old barn. I recognize there were pots of money put aside for such projects and there was also senior government help on the barn restoration, but it’s still hard not to compare what we spend our money on and what we don’t have the funds to undertake. The bottom line is that Paterson Park is a big piece of Delta’s past, so much so that every effort should be made to ensure it’s in public hands in its entirety. Zoning restricts what can be built there and the previous owner, the Delta Agricultural Society, has a say in its future, so it’s not like condos or a strip mall are in the cards, but given its storied place in this municipality’s history, there’s only one logical owner.

Not always making smartest use of all those smartphones MIKE SCHNEIDER

COMMUNITY COMMENT A friend of mine once noted that if you have the technology you should use it. At the time, I think the statement was based on a barbecue add-on. A side burner for mushrooms or something. I just spent a few days with some good friends and their families at a spectacular property on Gabriola Island. I have been lucky to visit this unbelievable place since I was a teenager. Things have changed over the years, that’s for sure. At the time of my visit, there were five adults and five teenagers enjoying great weather and a variety of sightseeing opportunities. Just “chilling” on the deck was the most popular activity. Prepping various meals and cleaning up after them was a fantastic opportunity to talk, laugh and generally socialize. During the intermittent periods between excellent outings and meal prepping there were always well told and intriguing stories of sum-

mers gone by. Some sunshine, good food and saltwater also seems to lend to a think-tank environment. We would laugh our heads off at ideas we were coming up for products and services and often felt compelled to do quick Google searches on our phones. Thankfully the cabin does not have a network to join but this fact spawned the question whether it should have one. It was suggested the network could be used sparingly for important things like checking Scrabble words and helping with crossword clues. Yes, all 10 of us had smartphones and we were looking to be “smart” at various points of the day. Whether it was checking for work-related mail or important texts telling friends what we were doing now, we were all guilty of checking in periodically. At one stage there was a near crisis when the phone chargers could not be identified. A short walk through the small cabin would show that every outlet had a white charger plugged in for fear of losing connectivity with our “providers.” Some people need and benefit from the technology and they will use it prudently. Working remotely is an idea that

is still in its baby phase. If you are someone who can contribute to a company or business from a phone or laptop over a wireless network, then maybe working while on “holidays,” at least for a portion of your trip, might be beneficial for you and the business. I know my biggest fear on returning from a couple of days off is dealing with e-mail and other missed correspondence. Recently there has been a quest to quell incessant mobile phone use. I almost ran over a lady walking her baby in a stroller the other day as she was oblivious to me while she was holding her phone close to her face talking while listening with headphones. Smart. The quest is called “phubbing,” as in snubbing. The PH is for phone. So when that goof five rows up from you at the theatre lights up like a Christmas tree when text messages come pouring in, he or she is snubbing the movie, and snubbing the people around them. The stroller lady was phubbing her baby, herself and me. We definitely need to be smart with our phones because it would seem they are controlling us when it should be the other way around. Reasoned discourse needed

Editor: It won’t be another record-setting Spetifore (Southlands)-style public hearing. Speakers then had no time limit, and signed up to speak again. The objective seemed not informed decision, but unconditional surrender. Council had no ability to end the hearing. One evening when the list was short, council extended the hearing anticipating the end. Urgent calls went out. People abandoned beds, signed up, spoke, and spoke some more. With a fiveminute time limit, we can do better than that. If Century Group were to locate its innovative development somewhere above the flood plain, near a Highway 17 access, and

Would shopping and commuter traffic from 950 additional homes be manageable on Tsawwassen’s streets? Would development really reduce the Southlands’ agricultural capability? Given $9 million of irrigation, drainage and other agricultural improvements funded by development, could the remaining farmland actually out-produce the present farm? Whatever the conclusions and decision may be, I hope they flow from informed, fact-based debate and thoughtful judgment, not from yet another contentious battle to outnumber and out speak the other guys. Tsawwassen deserves better than that. Ed Ries

on non-agricultural land, wouldn’t we applaud it? The development itself seems desirable. The question is whether issues arising from its location so detract from that desirability that it should be rejected. Location issues are pivotal and thus demand thoughtful, informed debate in the public hearing. Could Tsawwassen’s streets and traffic, during some limited periods of time, reasonably accommodate 60,000 truckloads of fill needed to prepare the site? Would designs be compromised to minimize the fill needed? For example, would elderly homeowners need to scale high stairs to access elevated homes from at-grade parking?

One has to only look at the number of pubs and liquor stores in Ladner to see how the consumption of alcohol is approved by society in general. What kind of example are we setting for our young ones? Allison Knox

We hear of so many tragedies in the news where young drivers have been killed or killed others because of being under the influence of alcohol. Are we adults not to blame somewhat because of our acceptance of over-drinking among adults?

Cyclists should be rewarded

Editor: Re: No reason bikes should get a free ride, letter to the editor, Aug. 2 I thought I had heard it all when a complaint about air traffic noise took whininess to a whole new realm, but sadly, the outrageous letter from R.D. Grant has trumped that grumble. As an avid cyclist and, yes, a car owner, Grant’s complaints have really hit a nerve because of the ludicrous suggestion that cyclists should start paying to ride their bicycles. The notion that cyclists should pay a licence fee must surely come from the fact bikes cause so much damage to the roads that this fee will offset the costs of repair. No? That’s not it? Well then, it must be because cyclists do not pay taxes that go towards our infrastructure that includes

to poor fitness. For every person out there on his or her bike, there is one more role model for our increasingly sedentary youth. I propose a more sensible solution: for every person who can prove that he or she cycles to work, the government should provide a bursary towards their cycling maintenance and clothing, and all cyclists should get a free ride on transit — all paid for by the couch potatoes who can’t be bothered to get out of their gas guzzlers, despite the damage it does to our roads, our air and our health. Not only will this promote a healthier lifestyle, but it will get more cars off the road, and in the long run will save the citizens of Metro Vancouver money. Wouldn’t it be great if Delta took the lead on this? T. Lupton

transit and bike lanes. Hmm, I seem to remember paying my property tax and my gas tax when I drive my car, so that can’t be it. Maybe it’s because cycling is an inherently unhealthy activity that contributes to our rising health care costs. Wrong again. For every cyclist who is on the road, there is one less car belching toxic fumes into the air, dripping oil on the roads and posing a threat to our children playing on the street. For every cyclist who commutes to work, there is one less car causing a traffic jam and damage to our roads. My dad is turning the big 6-0 this coming Sunday. I have started to notice how much he has changed over the years. I look at his grey hair and wonder how much of it I caused. I know it is hard to believe I could cause stress to anyone, but I, too, was once a headstrong and stubborn teenager. My dad would attempt to impart his wisdom on me. At first he knew everything, but then as I began to age and know everything, he seemed to know far less. It’s odd how that happens. In all of my teenage years, he would try to share his wisdom but I “knew” better and would go off and make countless mistakes. When I returned, he would simply help me

Animals get time to shine Annual expo set for Sunday at Memorial Park BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Memorial Park will play host to many four-legged friends this Sunday thanks to the fifth annual Delta Community Animal Expo. The event is put on by the Delta Community Animal Shelter, which is excited to introduce a “demo ring” this time around, says animal control officer and 2013 Animal Expo project manager Jenna Ascroft. “This year we’ve split it up where we’ve got the show stage for people who

are doing educational topics and speeches and the demo ring which will be more an active, wide open area for animals to really use the space.” Some of the demonstrations will include dog agility, Frisbee dogs, canine nose work and rabbit agility. Ascroft says the whole park has been reserved this year for the expo and that more space equals more room for some fun activities. The Tollie Fund Activity Arena will have activities for both people and dogs,

she says. There will be a chance for people to win a number of prizes at game stations, as well as a grand prize draw at the end of the day that is free to enter. For those who get hungry at the event there will be Bombay Joes Indian food, mini-doughnuts, hotdogs, fruit smoothies and Frostbite Cupcakes and Candy. The Feelgood Treat Company and other vendors will have treats for animals. Ascroft says last year’s expo was a big success with approximately 40 vendors

in attendance and about 3,500 visitors. The Delta Community Animal Expo takes place Sunday, Aug. 11 at Memorial Park, 5010-47th Ave., Ladner, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Leashed pets are welcome. Visit www.deltacommunityanimalshelter.ca or the shelter’s Facebook page for more information. FILE PHOTO

Wiener dogs headed to Winskill this weekend BY

This year’s Wiener Walk and Picnic takes place Sunday at Winskill Park.

Don’t be surprised to see dozens and dozens of dachshunds having a good time at Winskill Park Sunday. It’s just the Western Dachshund Club’s 21st annual Wiener Walk and Picnic. The event typically attracts somewhere in the neighbourhood of 200 of the long-bodied and short-legged dogs, notes Tsawwassen’s Susan Lankau, the secretary for the Western Dachshund Club. Last year about 175 wiener dogs attended.

“There were dogs everywhere,” she says. The event starts off with a walk around the park for the dogs in attendance while another jaunt takes place just before a costume contest is held later in the day. “There’s absolutely no way we could change that. People come prepared with their costumes.” Along with games for the wiener dogs there will be Earthdog exercises, basically a trial that tests the working ability and instincts of the dogs. Dachshunds originated in Germany and have three coat varieties: smooth hair, wire hair and long hair. The

canines were developed to chase burrow-dwelling animals. The name, dachshund, is German and translates to “badger dog.” The Western Dachshund Club’s annual Wiener Walk and Picnic takes place Sunday at Winskill Park in Tsawwassen. Registration is at 10:30 a.m. The event goes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Entry is $10 for the first dog and $5 for each subsequent dog. There will be hotdogs and other snacks, including vegetarian choices, along with pop and water at the event. For more on the club visit www.westerndachshundclub.ca.

It’s the one day a year when adults can be kids again and enjoy their very own Pirate Pak! And for each one we sell, we’ll donate $2 to the Zajac Ranch for Children. *Adult Pirate Paks only available on Wednesday, August 14th, 2013 after 11am.

The Goonies kicked off the series last month at Winskill Park. Between 700 and 1,000 people came out and enjoyed great weather, said BIA executive director Barb Westlake. “We’re expecting it to be just as nice this weekend,” Westlake said. Celtic band Doghouse will perform as part of the pre-movie festivities, which will also include activities put on by businesses and community groups.

Exercises for working those glutes Look good in your jeans this summer p.j. wren

Well on Your Way

I

f there is one muscle in the human body that you should be training, it’s the one that you are currently sitting on. The job of your glutes, or gluteus maximus, is to extend and laterally rotate the thigh at the hip joint. It is the largest of the three gluteal muscles (the other two being the gluteus mediF

R

E

E

us and minimus), and its large size is a function of its job, which is maintaining the trunk in an erect position. In other words, if your glutes are weak, your back and posture are weak too. While most people who workout believe that if they do large volumes of squats, step ups, deadlifts and lunges, they will build their glutes. That, sadly, is not the case. Yes, these powerhouse moves typically involve the glutes. Unfortunately, most people do not focus on recruiting their glutes for A

D

M

I

S

these exercises, resulting in other muscles taking over the movement and hijacking the glutes’ job. Why should you care if the glutes do their job or not? I’ve got three reasons for you: injury, performance and looking good in your jeans. As mentioned earlier, the glutes help the spine and upper torso stay upright — it is essentially the centre of your body. If you have not learned how to fire up your glutes properly, then all other movements that happen from the centre of the body S

(such as walking, running, jumping, squatting, getting up from a chair, going up stairs, standing, etc) are compromised. A compromised muscle group leads to poor athletic performance and, eventually, injury. These outcomes both suck for anyone who works out. We exercise to get better, not worse. As for looking good in your jeans, that may or may not be your goal with your fitness program. Nonetheless, I would love for you to have glutes that are strong and fire up at will, so the next time your loved one smacks you on the butt you can turn to him or her and ask them, “Did my butt hurt your hand?” Try these two exercises designed to activate the glutes while at the same time stretching the often tight hip flexors. P.J. Wren is the fitness half of the Go Fit Gal team. Check out their online nutrition and fitness plans at www.gofitgals.com.

Hip Thrust

Lie the upper back on the long end of a bench, or a ball, with your knees bent and bottoms of feet on another bench or chair.

Drop your hips towards the ground and then use your glutes to drive the hips up as high as you can. Hold that top contraction for five seconds and then slowly lower. Aim for 10 to 15 reps. If your hamstrings cramp during this exercise, it is a telltale sign your glutes are weak and that your hamstrings have hijacked the exercise. Focus on using the glutes and pause longer at the top part of the contraction.

Storyteller and puppeteer Elspeth Bowers performed her hour-long show, Up, Up and Away!, at both South Delta libraries last month.

Libraries host Tony Prophet Musician Tony Prophet will perform at all three Delta libraries next Wednesday as part of the 2013 Summer Reading Club series. Prophet is a seasoned entertainer, great singer and a masterful guitar player who always gets any crowd involved in the fun.

With a bag of kid-sized costumes and energized songs like Splish Splash and Good Love, he’ll have those in attendance dancing and signing along. Whether playing his acoustic guitar singing the Cat Came Back, or blazing rock licks with his electric while kids play air guitar, everyone will be

involved in the fun. All ages are welcome at the performances that will be held at the following times: • 10:30 to 11:15 a.m. George Mackie Library • 1 to 1:45 p.m. Tsawwassen Library • 3:30 to 4:15 p.m. Ladner Pioneer Library

Recently Beach Grove Golf Club hosted a 7 week program for girls aged 7 to 18. The program was coordinated by Club member Mary Adams. We asked Mary to share her insights into the value of the program to both the game of golf and the community of Tsawwassen.. Can you give us a brief overview of the program? This is our 8th year conducting this program called CN Future Links. It is a joint initiative of Golf Canada, PGA of Canada and Canada’s provincial golf associations; designed to ensure the future of the game. Canadian National is the corporate sponsor. The program was originally developed by Golf Canada working with the Girl Guides of Canada. We modiUed it to focus on golf and more individual attention. The girls have weekly lessons learning the various skills and also gain on course experience. Each year we have 60 or more girls participating with a high number of girls returning each year. We ensure the girls are paired with their friends, the groups are kept small, and the girls receive quality, professional coaching. Volunteers from the Women’s Section as well as older girls who have participated in the past add to the success of the program. What does the game of golf provide to the girls that most other sports come up short on? Girls’ Club helps the girls to develop skills, attitudes, and self-esteem that will encourage them both on the golf course and in life. It focuses on introducing them to social competition, learning how to compete, and developing friendships. Golf teaches one to be honest and success is based on your individual ability.. Why does Beach Grove Golf Club consider it important to host this program? Girls’ Club aims to attract girls to the game and create a life-long love of golf. Often the girls drop golf but they will have conUdence and the skills when they return to the sport as adults. Golf is a great family sport and very important for business networking and relationships. We hope to see the girls joining as junior members or as adults. For good junior girl golfers, there are university scholarship opportunities available and the amount of competition for these scholarships is less than it is for boys.

Local artist celebrating new exhibit Tsawwassen’s Dennis Walsh describes work as ‘free expression’ BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Local artist Dennis Walsh will have a gallery viewing party for his new exhibit Evolution at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre next Thursday. He plans on having about 70 pieces, including pen and ink art along with a pair of large acrylic paintings, on display for the night of the event. “I don’t know if I would describe it as anything other than a free expression,” says Walsh when asked to describe his style of artwork. “There’s not a lot of thought when I start to do any of these.” You stick with it, he notes, and eventually the piece of artwork evolves into something. “I’m as interested to look at them when they’re finished as anyone else.” Walsh, who lives in Tsawwassen, adds that he’s

given away many pieces and that once the art leaves his hands, “that’s when the life of the picture starts.” Walsh, who recently had his work on display at the Lost + Found Café in Vancouver, has also invited a handful of other artists to hang a piece of their own at his show. “It’s kind of a big thing. I know it was for me when I first started, to hang a picture.” Walsh is a member of the South Delta Artists Guild and says the local group is an encouraging place for artists and a good way to get exposure. The gallery viewing party is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 15 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre, 1172-56th St. The art will be displayed until Sept. 14. Walsh keeps a blog at shellsandleather.blogspot.ca.

Jaguar stylists design fresh roadster BY

MALCOLM GUNN

www.wheelbasemedia.com

Sir William Lyons would be pleased, but likely perplexed at the same time with the arrival of the 2014 F-Type roadster. Under his reign, Jaguar’s founder oversaw the creation of numerous sports machines, culminating with E-Type (marketed as the XKE on our shores), regarded as one of the most spectacularly gorgeous cars ever produced. The two-place E-Type convertible and its hatchback sibling went on sale in 1961 and enjoyed a 10-year run. Now, four decades later and 28 years since Sir William’s death, the British automaker’s current minder, India’s Tata Group, has signed off on a fresh roadster. Anyone expecting an EType renaissance might be disappointed, but Jaguar’s stylists have configured

a handsome piece that blends elements of BMW’s Z4, Maserati Cabrio and Mercedes-Benz SL-class convertibles. The result isn’t E-Type sleek, but its shape is more purposeful, in a Teutonic sort of way. There’s even a Euro-style active rear spoiler of a type pioneered by Porsche and Mercedes-Benz (and others) that deploys once the F-Type has reached 100 km/h, then retracts once the roadster’s speed drops below 65 km/h The only real excess is a pair of bulging rear fenders that taper into the rear deck fitted with eye-slit taillights. When the weather turns bad, the F-Type’s cloth top returns to its latched and locked position in 12 seconds while the vehicle is traveling up to 50 km/h, which of course means you don’t have to completely come to a stop in the middle of traffic, in the middle

The F-Type’s interior is also a clean-scape design dominated by highly legible speedometer/tachometer dials and a trio of rotary knobs that operates the climate control system. One neat trick is a set of air vents atop the multi-function touch-screen infotainment unit that pop up when manually activated or whenever the automatic climate system calls for additional heating or cooling. Finally, the shapely F-

Types seats are based on those installed in the highperformance (and larger) Jaguar XKR-S model and actually don’t require the car’s occupants to be overly svelte to squeeze between the bolsters. Pushing the start button fires up one of three engines. Base F-Types are fitted with a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 (a derivative of Jaguar’s 5.0-litre V8 and an engine that’s also used in the XJ and XF sedans) that makes a respectable

340 horsepower. According to Jaguar, it will push the F-Type to 96 km/h in 5.3 seconds. The F-Type S gets a 380-horsepower version of 3.0 that cuts that time to 4.9 seconds. The real performance cat is the F-Type V8S with its supercharged 5.0-litre V8 that delivers 495 horsepower and can reel off sprints in a mere 4.3 seconds. Each powerplant is fitted with an eight-speed automatic transmission that operates with a stubby pistol-grip console-mounted shifter or by the steeringwheel-located paddles. The transmission also signals the engine to “blip” the throttle (called rev matching) for smoother transitions between gears when downshifting. There are rumours that a six-speed manual gearbox is not far off, but so far Jaguar is mum on the subject. Jaguar has always declared war on power-

robbing weight and consequently makes extensive use of aluminum in the F-Type’s construction, including the front and rear suspension. The basic body shell alone tips the scales at a mere 260 kilograms and the entire car has been kept to about 1,600 kilograms. Knowing that sports-car owners love those seductive under-hood sounds, Jaguar offers an optional active exhaust system. F-Type pricing starts at $78,300 for the base V6 and spikes into low-six-figure territory for the V8S. At that point, the roadster nearly trips over the base price of Jaguar’s 385-horsepower XK convertible with its larger cockpit. Ultimately it will be the F-Type’s playful demeanor and exceptional performance that will win over sports-car lovers, features that Sir William Lyons would likely have wholeheartedly endorsed.

AGRIGULTURE REPORT Local Agriculture – A Pillar in the history and growth of our community

Greenhouse takes shape on Hwy. 10

After a building boom more than a decade ago, hothouse industry is seeing first major addition in years BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

The first large-scale greenhouse to be built in Delta in a number of years is taking shape along Highway 10. Sunny Bay Greenhouses Ltd., which has other hothouse facilities in the Fraser Valley, is constructing one on the site still occupied by the historic but crumbling Kittson House near the Highway 99 interchange. The new greenhouse didn’t go to Delta council for approval and was only dealt with at the staff level, having met all the building permit requirements, as well as provincial guidelines for greenhouse operations. Noting council still deals with other aspects of greenhouses, including applications for worker housing, deputy planning director Marcy Sangret said the last application involving greenhouses in Delta was for an expansion to an existing operation in 2007. There have been several applications over the

past few years for migrant worker housing and cogeneration power plants at greenhouse sites, but none for new growing facilities, although a handful of operations have appeared in other communities. It’s far cry from over a decade earlier when a race seemed to be on to build large greenhouses in Delta. Asked why that’s been the case, Windset Greenhouses COO John Newell said growth in the industry overall in recent years has been slow but steady. Noting large, hightech greenhouses are expensive undertakings requiring huge capital, he said the industry only now is catching up to the earlier massive growth through marketing. “As well, there has been expansion in California and Arizona, Texas and places like that, which puts pressure here. But the biggest reason is Mexico has expanded so quickly in our industry that we’ve had trouble keeping up. “We’ve had to show differences in quality and niche products and bringing

A large-scale greenhouse is under construction adjacent to the historic Kittson House. along innovation and trying to stay out of that commodity deal. So our greenhouses here are trying to focus on niche items where we can compete with our higher standard,” Newell said. Windset’s 41B Street operation has adapted with the times, specializing in such products as mini bell peppers, grape tomatoes and mini cucumbers, which have developed a strong following in Western Canada and U.S. West Coast.

Noting the carbon tax break given only recently to greenhouses was a big financial burden lifted, Linda Delli Santi, executive director of the B.C. Greenhouse Growers’ Association, is optimistic growth will occur in the province’s hothouse industry, especially in Delta. She agreed the biggest challenge has been Mexico because many of its products were labeled as greenhouse grown even if that

GORD GOBLE

wasn’t necessarily the case. “If you wanted to look at a level playing field, it was not really competition. In Mexico, they have what they call protected agriculture, which is a couple of posts that hold up a farm that has a cloth, and they called it greenhouses. We get a small premium in the marketplace for the positive attributes of greenhousegrown products, but their input costs were a whole lot less,” she explained.

Delli Santi said a renegotiated agreement between the U.S. and Mexico addressed the issue, which hopefully will lead to different classifications and codes, starting with tomatoes. She expects that to eventually include Canada. Delta still has the highest concentration of greenhouses in the Lower Mainland, although they make up only a small percentage of the municipality’s total farming base. The latest Agricultural Land Use Inventory for Delta, conducted in the summer of 2010 by the Ministry of Agriculture, found that greenhouses cover 152 hectares (375 acres), equaling roughly two per cent of Delta’s ALR land. Not counting the greenhouse under construction on Highway 10, there are 15 glass greenhouses and another 18 poly greenhouses. All of the large greenhouses grow vegetables, which will also be the case with the Sunny Bay operation.

Changes taking place at top for DFI

Dave Ryall replaces John Savage as president, while long-time administrator Rob Butler easing into retirement The Delta Farmers’ Institute, which has been advocating on behalf of area farmers since 1898, has undergone some changes at the top. Long-time president John Savage, a former provincial agriculture minister, has stepped down, replaced by grower David Ryall, while Robert Butler, who has served even longer as the group’s administrator, is also leaving. Butler is being replaced by Leisa Yee. Savage, a long time Delta farmer from a pioneering farm family, has provided the community and the province with many years of service as a municipal councillor, MLA and agriculture minister. He held the position of DFI president for a number of years, guiding the organization through negotiations with government agencies to ensure the impacts on agriculture of the South Fraser Perimeter Road were mitigated. Savage has not retired but has simply gone back to

farming by assisting another farm family in Delta. Butler, who has been the DFI’s administrator since 1997, announced a year ago he wished to retire in 2013, and is in the process of turning over his duties to Yee. Butler came to the DFI after retiring from a senior management position in the grain terminal business in Vancouver, where he spent 33 years. New president Ryall and his family have been growing vegetables in greenhouses since 1970, moving to Ladner in 1996 to start a greenhouse operation. Ryall has been involved in committees in all aspects of agriculture and currently serves on Metro Vancouver’s Agricultural Advisory Committee. Ryall and his family recently moved to Westham Island to produce field vegetable crops. He said he looks forward to bringing his passion for agriculture to his new role. Along with a new president, the DFI has two new

vice presidents — Clarence DeBoer, a dairy and cranberry grower from East Delta, and David Terpsma, who along with his parents, produces hay and garlic in East Delta. Yee has 25 years of administration and marketing experience, primarily with non-profit organizations. Most recently, she has worked in roles supporting local food and farming, including projects for Farm Folk City Folk, the Steveston Farmers Market, and the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust. Noel Roddick remains as the DFI’s secretary treasurer, a position he has held for a great number of years. As an advocacy organization, one of the DFI’s primary objectives is to ensure farmers in Delta are not negatively impacted by regulations and initiatives of the various levels of government. One of its main goals is to make sure farming continues to be healthy, including the ability of farmers to make a profit.

Trust’s research benefits soil and wildlife Area farmers are supportive of stewardship programs undertaken by the Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust Although largely imperceptible to the public eye, thousands of hectares of the Lower Fraser Valley’s farm fields are enrolled in the Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust (DF&WT)’s stewardship programs each year. Perhaps even more inconspicuous, however, is the research local farmers generously facilitate through access to their land, which provides continual evidence of the effectiveness of these programs. Research addressing both challenges to farming and wildlife habitat conservation are conducted using the trust’s Partners in Stewardship Model as a blueprint. Through this model, studies undertaken, either directly from the trust or in partnership with post-secondary institutions, are used to formulate sets of management practices to address each specific challenge. The surrounding farming community then provides feedback regarding the viability and practicality

of each set of management practices. If these are supported both by scientific evidence and the agricultural community, funding is secured and the practices may be implemented as a stewardship program upon Delta fields. Ongoing monitoring, evaluation and research further refines these sets of management practices. The initial research conducted to establish DF&WT’s six programs that exist today was carried out during the first 10 years of the organization by biologists and agrologists. The trust continues to build on that foundation through in-house research. In 2009, DF&WT partnered with Delta farmers to determine how varying planting dates of winter wheat (a commonly used cover crop) affects the number of migratory waterfowl that a farm field can attract throughout the fall to spring period. Results showed that if farmers sow winter wheat in late August, as opposed

DF&WT also offers opportunities for students to complete their masters or technical diploma by engaging in research. Since the early 2000s, the trust

has partnered with BCIT to evaluate the efficacy of the Grassland Set-aside Program, whereby farmers sow a mix of agronomic grasses on their fields and allow them to mature into tall grassland habitat for one to four years. The program offers farmers an opportunity to improve soil structure and build organic matter in their fields, while simultaneously

providing critical habitat for wildlife. For the past three years, BCIT students enrolled in the Fish Wildlife and Recreation Program have studied whether mowing portions of a set-aside has the potential to enhance wildlife habitat by increasing prey accessibility for raptors such as the northern harrier and short-eared owl. To assess the effects of using mowing as a management tool, students monitor the location and behaviour of raptors hunting over a set-aside during the fall and winter. In addition, they carry out catch and release trapping to compare the number of Townsend’s voles (an important food source for both raptors and herons) in the mown and un-mown portions of the field. This data will eventually be used to determine whether mowing should be incorporated as a tool to increase the value of a set-aside for wildlife. In repeating the study over the period of several years, the trust hopes to

obtain a long-term dataset that will further refine management practices, while offering post-secondary students an opportunity to engage in meaningful research in the community. BCIT instructor Eric Anderson agrees many benefits arise from partnering with the trust. “For decades, the Fish, Wildlife and Recreation Program at BCIT has been a leader in providing handson training for natural resource professionals,” he said. “To a large extent the success of this program has relied upon close working relationships between FWR students and industry sponsors. A particularly strong relationship exists between FWR and DF&WT, which for years has provided opportunities for FWR students to conduct year-long, mentored research projects. These projects in turn benefit DFWT by providing information needed to help guide their management strategies.”

Trust has been bridging historic divide for the past two decades

This year, the Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust is marking 20 years of preserving farmland and associated wildlife habitat in the lower Fraser River delta. Through six on-farm stewardship programs, the trust works with local farmers to plant winter cover crops, establish and maintain hedgerows, grass margins, and grassland setaside habitat.

In addition, the organization offers programs for farmers to amend their soil pH, and re-contour their fields for optimal crop production. Each program is tailored to meet specific challenges to agriculture, while also providing valuable food sources and cover for wildlife. The work of the trust is championed as a success

Schools making use of local produce

Greenhouse representative gets firsthand look at SDSS culinary arts students in bustling teaching kitchen When David Bell recently visited South Delta Secondary, he sat down to a gourmet lunch prepared by Grade 11 and 12 students enrolled in the culinary arts program. Bell, who is chief marketing officer with local greenhouse Houweling’s Tomatoes, was at the school to meet chef Gerald Worobetz and his students and tour the busy teaching kitchen. The visit was organized by Tammy Watson of B.C. Agriculture in the Classroom as part of the Take a Bite of B.C. program. The program is a partnership between producers, the B.C. Culinary Arts Association and Agriculture in the Classroom. “Producers donate food to us and we deliver it to secondary schools with teaching kitchens,” Watson explained. “We have 37 schools throughout B.C. presently enrolled in the program, including three here in Delta.”

The teaching kitchens receive a monthly delivery of a range of agricultural products during the school year, including greenhouse-grown tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet peppers and fresh herbs such as basil and oregano, as well as products such as salmon and beef. “We get to focus on what’s seasonal,” said Worobetz, “that way the kids learn about where their food comes from and when, as well as the nutritional value of the foods they’re preparing.” As part of their culinary training, students are challenged to develop their menus using whatever products are provided to them. The food they prepare and cook in class is then sold in the school cafeteria. Bell watched as students used their skills to chop, slice and dice as they worked at food stations around the bustling teaching kitchen. “We’ve been participating in Take a Bite of B.C. since it started in 2009,”

he said. “This year we’ve focused on providing our tomato-on-the-vine and Roma varieties.” And tomatoes were a colourful feature in several of the day’s menu options, mouth-watering West Coast cobb and couscous salads, and boxes filled with fresh, raw veggies. All are firm favourites with the students. “There are so many healthy choices,” Bell said. “I’m thrilled to see what the students have created using our produce.” The kitchen was a hive of activity in the last few minutes before the lunch bell. Students artfully arranged herb garnishes on the salads and uncovered the steaming pots of potato and leak soup. Then over 200 items were bustled over to the cafeteria counter. Industry plays a vital role Minister says government keen to work with farmers PAT PIMM

I appreciate the invitation to provide this message as this is my first opportunity to address readers of the Delta Optimist since being appointed minister of agriculture in June. It is a real honour to receive this appointment and I am enjoying my new role and the responsibility it holds. The B.C. government has been working hard to develop a business environment that inspires and supports innovation and competitiveness in agriculture. The agriculture industry plays a big part in generating jobs, stimulating investment and encouraging growth and stability in communities like Delta and right across the province. The Ministry of Agriculture is moving forward with several initiatives that will be of interest to the local greenhouse industry, including a permanent grant program to help offset carbon tax costs for commercial greenhouse

growers. The program was announced right here in Delta in 2012 and now allows a rebate for 80 per cent of the carbon tax paid on natural gas and propane used for heating and CO2 production. The 2013 grant program covers commercial greenhouse sectors, including vegetable and floriculture growers, wholesale production and forest seedling nurseries. The B.C. government is also introducing legislation that, as of Jan. 1, 2014, will provide a carbon tax exemption for the industry for the same coloured motor fuels, and uses, that they currently are able to purchase exempt from the motor fuel tax. This is something the industry raised, we listened and now your B.C. government has acted. As the Ministry of Agriculture reflects on the past year, we are very proud of the launch and success of the Buy Local Program. In August 2012, the B.C. government announced $2

million in funding to help businesses and organizations launch or expand their own marketing campaigns. Several Lower Mainland organizations were successful applicants and the Buy Local funding will help them reach a larger audience. All of these programs are good news for Delta. With the area’s ideal growing conditions and soils, and Delta’s proximity to both local markets and first class infrastructure that connects producers with markets throughout North America and the world, the opportunity for investment, careers and success in Delta agrifoods continues to grow. There are a lot of farmers and producers that call Delta home and in closing I want to thank our farming families for the service they provide. The B.C. government looks forward to continuing to work with you. Pat Pimm was recently appointed as provincial minister of agriculture by Premier Christy Clark.

When a 2009 treaty established self-governance for the Tsawwassen First Nation, the TFN gained jurisdiction of more than 200 hectares of agricultural land in one of Canada’s most fertile areas. This presented the community with a chance to create a unique,

This commitment led to an integrated planning process that would acknowledge future developments while identifying habitat mitigation measures for the protection of both wildlife and agricultural viability. Through federal and provincial funding delivered by the Investment Agriculture Foundation, TFN completed an agricultural strategy to enhance local agricultural productivity, preserve environmental integrity and encourage TFN member involvement in agricultural enterprise. “The strategy will enable TFN to protect their land base and expand opportunities for members in the

You might think having John Deere compare their tractors to ours would make us a little heated. However, with our SCR emissions system, it's hardly an issue. Deere says they want to compare tractors. We’ll play along if they can stand the heat. Because while our emissions systems treats the exhaust after it leaves the engine, their system sends the exhaust back in where it builds up heat– heat that can

affect the needed size of cooling systems, wear components and the life of the tractor. So if you're looking at a Fendt and a Deere, take a good look at the difference because there’s plenty. And while Deere's latest attempt to compare themselves to Fendt may not have found its mark, they're certainly getting warmer.

for the next generation of farmers. While there has been growing interest in agricultural participation by TFN members, limited agricultural knowledge and financial barriers have proven challenging. According to Williams, the plan will allow better response to member needs by offering targeted agricultural skill development and ensuring lands are available for members when they are ready to begin farming. To that end, TFN is exploring potential partnerships with post-secondary institutions to establish training and development opportunities, as well as revisiting farmland lease structures that allow for new farm entrants. The TFN is also working to enhance environmental management by partnering with conservation groups like Delta Farmland & Wildlife Trust for input on leasing revisions. For Williams, the success of developing and implementing the strategy thus far is primarily due to strong member support. “From the beginning the TFN community has been the guiding force behind the process, building their priorities as a nation,” he said. “Thanks to a strategy informed by community consensus, agricultural development is positioned to play a significant role in the social, cultural and economic well-being of our land.” The Investment Agriculture Foundation of B.C. is an industry-led notfor-profit organization that works with the agri-food industry and federal and provincial funding partners to invest in projects that have the potential to transform ideas into solutions. Making a splash at Canada Games

Local Tides

Two members of the Winskill Dolphins swim club have reached the podium at the Canada Summer Games in Sherbrooke, QB. Ladner paralympian Dalton Boon has captured four medals, including gold on Wednesday in the 100 metre men’s freestyle in a time of 58.67 seconds. The 19-year-old’s outstanding performance came on the heels of silver medals in the the 200/400 freestyle and 100 breaststroke (1:25.54) — with new personal best times in each event. On Tuesday, Boon added a bronze in the 100 backstroke. It took a new provincial and club record for Markus Thormeyer to capture bronze in the men’s 100 backstroke. The 15-year old was clocked in a time of 56.64 which broke the longstanding provincial mark for this race in his age group. Meanwhile, it’s been a tough start on the basketball court for Delta Pacers standout Ryan Cowley and the B.C. U17 men’s team. B.C. opened play on Sunday by squandering a 13-point halftime lead in a 78-65 loss to New Foundland. B.C. looked to be in control with a 49-29 avantage midway through the third quarter when New Foundland came storming back, closing with a 13-6 run and outscoring B.C. 3617 in the fourth. Cowley had seven points and five rebounds in 18 minutes of playing time. B.C. then dropped a 9481 decision to Saskatchewan on Monday which saw the prarie province jump out to a 32-17 lead after one quarter and keep the margin in double digits the rest of

Cowley was perfect from the field, scoring six points and grabbing seven rebounds in 19 minutes of floor time. B.C. will close out the tournament in consolation play. It’s been better news on the soccer pitch as Alessia Azermadhi, Sessen Stevens and Jasmine Mander helped B.C. go undefeated into yesterday’s gold medal game against Quebec. B.C. produced wins over New Brunswick (4-0) and

Manitoba (4-0) to capture its pool group. Stevens was among the goal scorers against Manitoba, finding the back of the net in the 29th minute. The squad then moved onto the quarter-finals where it doubled Alberta 4-2. Mander (64th minute) was among the scorers. B.C. then came through with a huge 2-1 victory over arch-rival Ontario in Wednesday’s semi-final match. Tsawwassen’s Gord Collings has the B.C. women’s softball team off to a

solid 6-2 start, heading into the final day of round-robin action on Wednesday. Meanwhile, beach volleyball standouts Megan and Nicole McNamara of Tsawwassen will see their first action at the Games on Monday as the recently turned 16-year-olds look to continue their busy summer with another podium finish. They won bronze at the recent Nationals, competing in the women’s open division. Ladner rower Max Lattimer takes momentum to Sherbrooke having representing Canada at the

recent U24 World Rowing Championships in Austria. Lattimer teamed with Vancouver’s Evan Cheng to place a respectable fifth in the men’s lightweight pair final. Lattimer currently rows for UBC under coach Mike Pearce after spending his high school career at Vancouver College. The rowing competition starts on Tuesday. Heading into Thursday’s action, B.C. sits fourth in the medal standings with 29, including nine gold. Ontario leads the way with 64 medals and 32 gold.

Mosquito A Red Sox capture silver medal at provincial tourney

Ladner Red Sox Isaac Embree attempts to tag out a Tsawwassen baserunner duirng earlier Bantam AA provincial playdowns action. The Red Sox went on to advance to provincials in Rutland last weekend where they reached the semifinals before losing an extra inning heartbreaker to Vancouver.

Ladner teams enjoy strong showings as all-star ball season comes to end The Ladner Red Sox capped an outstanding all-star baseball season with a silver medal at last weekend’s Mosquito A Provincial Championships in Cloverdale. After going 3-2-1 in Zone One qualifying play, Ladner cranked up its game at the provincial tourney — producing wins over Victoria (4-1), Penticton (9-4), Prince George (11-4) and Chilliwack (18-16) to win its pool group. The locals then moved onto the semi-finals where they came through with a thrilling 5-4 win over host Cloverdale. The impressive run concluded in the championship game which featured plenty of offensive fireworks in an 18-14 loss to Abbotsford. Meanwhile, in Rutland, Ladner Minor Baseball’s Bantam AA team proved to be the surprise entry of the tournament, coming ever-so-close to reaching the gold medal game. The Red Sox’s spot at provincials wasn’t secured until the final couple days of playdowns as a roller coaster run produced a 5-5 record. However, they got off to a terrific start in the Okanagan heat with wins over Prince George (7-0) and Rutland (13-3) — setting the stage for a pivotal Saturday against top seeds Cloverdale and Surrey. Ladner dropped a 13-12 heartbreaker to Cloverdale but then clinched a semi-final berth with a big 12-10 win over Surrey — eliminating a team that went 8-1-1 in playdowns. Ladner was considered the heavy underdog in its semifinal game against unbeaten and pre-tournament favourite Vancouver but more than held its own — taking a lead into the late stages of the game. However, Vancouver rallied to force extra innings and went on to pull out an 8-7 victory. In Midget AA action, Ladner was considered one of the teams to beat in Duncan after putting together a sparkling 14-1 record in qualifying play. Ladner lived up to the hype early on with wins over Newton (11-1), Vancouver Minor (9-5) and Ridge Meadows (18-11) before dropping a 6-5 decision to Campbell River. The locals moved onto the semi-finals where they didn’t have an answer for the Prince George bats in an 18-11 loss. Tsawwassen also earned a spot at this tournament and went 1-3 in round-robin play with a win over Coquitlam Moody (17-11) and close losses to Duncan (10-9), Aldergrove (4-3) and Prince George (3-1) Also on the Island, Ladner’s Pee Wee AA team advanced to the semi-finals before falling 11-1 to a powerhouse Burnaby squad that outscored its opponents 34-3 in the playoff round en route to the title. Ladner had opened the tournament with a 7-3 loss to Abbotsford before battling its way back into contention with wins over Comox Valley (15-9), Cloverdale (12-7) and Oceanside (21-11). At the Mosquito AAA Tier One Championships in Cloverdale, Ladner missed out on the playoff round after going 2-2 in preliminary play. The Red Sox opened with a 7-2 loss to Abbotsford then blasted Rutland 16-0 before a tough 4-2 loss to Victoria. They rebounded to defeat Richmond 4-1 but it wasn’t enough to advance. A small consolation was seeing the two teams to beat Ladner meet in the final with Victoria doubling Abbotsford 14-7.

Bronze finish for Islanders at Junior “B” provincials

A year ago it was a close call silver medal performance and this time the Delta Islanders came away with bronze at the Provincial Junior B Lacrosse Championships in Burnaby. The West Coast Junior Lacrosse League champions’ bid to reach the top of the podium ended with a heartbreaking 7-6 loss to the Vancouver Island representative Saanich Tigers on Sunday morning. Delta regrouped to defeat the Vernon Tigers 13-9 in the bronze medal game. The Islanders had opened the tournament by battling league rival Burnaby Lakers to an 8-8 tie before cruising to a 13-2 win over Vernon. Saanich went on to defeat Burnaby 12-10 in the final.
