eat, drink & be merry! Drive responsibly this season!

Government, ICBC and police launch December CounterAttack campaign While attitudes towards drinking and driving have changed considerably over the past 35 years, impaired driving is still a leading cause of fatal car crashes in B.C. To help keep our roads safe, police will be out in full force throughout December, looking for impaired drivers at roadchecks across the province.

Plan your ride

Recently the public was asked what it takes to be a designated driver. Many people said that the least drunk person often becomes the designated driver by default. Unfortunately, this is the type of thinking, along with a lack of planning, that leads to impaired driving crashes on our roads. In fact, the only time to decide how to get home safely is before you start drinking. Otherwise, it is too late. That is why everyone is reminded to designate a driver before the first round of drinks arrives.

Being a designated driver is a shared responsibility. You can promote safe driving and encourage your friends and family to make smart choices. Set a positive example and take turns beingthe designated driver. Remember, a designated driver is the person who decides not to drink so that they can drive others home safely. Does food, coffee, exercise or a cold shower help sober you up? Only time can sober you up or lower your blood-alcohol content.. Contrary to popular belief, food, coffee, cold showers or exercise will not speed up the elimination of alcohol from your system. You are safest if you completely separate driving from drinking.
