T

hirty years ago today, 10-yearold Jo-Anne Pedersen made a phone call from a phone booth at the Penny Pinchers convenience story at the corner of Watson and Vedder roads in Chilliwack.

That was the last time anyone saw the young girl but her mother holds out hope the now 40-year-old is still alive.

“The police are still receiving information on this ongoing investigation,” said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth in a press release. “Investigators are hopeful that we will soon know the truth regarding what happened to JoAnne so we can give her mother and family closure.”

Pedersen called her parents to pick her up because she was locked out of the house. By the time her parents arrived, the young girl was gone. Chilliwack RCMP have received three anonymous letters since 2008 from a man who claims to be a witness. Police say it is imperative they find this witness.

ultiple petitions are now competing for the attention of Chilliwack school officials as they prepare to decide whether or not to allow free Bibles to be distributed at local public schools.

Mike Unruh, a School District No. 33 education assistant, put up an online petition supporting the Bibles Saturday “Keeping the Bible an option for Grade 5 students in Chilliwack schools has come into question within the last few months. Unruh’s wife Stacy, told the Times that the key word is “optional.”

She wouldn’t want religion forced on students, but she’s not opposed to her own kids being exposed to different perspectives and would support other religious groups being allowed to hand out materials at schools.

“We follow the Bible, yet we send our kids to public schools so they can see the other side,” she said.

Another Bible-supporting petition (dubbed an “affirmation” by pastor Leon Throness) was circulated at the Unruh’s Chilliwack Alliance Church on Sunday and attracted 392 signatures in about 40 minutes.

wo days after six-year-old Ashley Jeronimus was hit by a car just yards from her family’s Agassiz home, her father paces Ashton Road, staring at a 40-foot skid mark and contemplating what could have been.

“It was a complete miracle she wasn’t killed,” Marvin Jeronimus told the Times Friday.

Around 6 p.m. Wednesday evening, Ashley was returning from a neighbour’s house with her mother Kathy.

After a car passed, Ashley moved ahead of Kathy, intending to cross the street.

She didn’t see a car coming the opposite direction.

The driver of the car tried to brake, as evidenced by the skid marks. But she couldn’t stop in time. Ashley was hit and flew up onto the car’s hood and windshield, which broke in the collision.

The young girl was taken to hospital, treated for various cuts and bruises, and released.

The driver of the vehicle was ticketed for driving without due care and attention, although Mounties told Ashley’s father that the car wasn’t speeding on the 50 km/h road. But that’s little consolation for Jeronimus, who is pressing the District of Kent to take action to slow drivers down on Ashton, which is

teven Kenneth Frederickson admitted to police that he engaged in a bloody fight with Robert-Jan Planje the night he went missing, Crown counsel Paul Blessin told the court at the beginning of Frederickson’s murder trial Monday.

Frederickson, a deaf crack addict, is charged with the December 2010 murder of the 64-year-old Planje, a lay minister at Chilliwack United Church.

Frederickson, the son of a close friend of Planje, had come to live with the older man in late 2010.

On the afternoon of Dec. 12, Mounties were called to Planje’s Ashwell Road mobile home.

There, they arrested Frederickson for breaching the peace in order “to defuse the situation.”

Frederickson, then 44, was later released without charges having been laid.

The Crown alleges that Frederickson returned that evening to Rainbow Estates mobile home park and commenced a fight with Planje.

Through a window, one neighbour saw Frederickson push Planje in the home’s kitchen around 2:30 a.m.

Seventy-five minutes later, another neighbour was awoken by banging noises coming from the home. Blessin told the court that a third neighbour witnessed Planje’s roommate drag “something that look like a rolled up carpet” to the back of Planje’s Toyota Camry and load it inside.

More old-growth forest protected

he provincial government showed some love to Chilliwack-area woodlands this Valentine’s Day with an announcement that more parcels of old-growth forest have been set aside for protection.

According to a Feb. 14 press release, 1,479 hectares in the Fraser Valley South Landscape Unit, which includes Chilliwack and parts of Electoral Areas D and E, have now been designated as oldgrowth management areas or OGMAs. Designed to preserve biodiversity, OGMAs include both old-growth and previously logged areas where foresters hope to establish or “recruit” pockets of old growth.

Around Chilliwack, 50 puzzle-piece-

shaped OGMAs are now strung from the Eastern Hillsides along the mountains to the east of Hwy. 1, including the northern and northwestern slopes of Mt. Cheam.

Five management areas have also been established just west of Cultus Lake and four have been set up north and west of the Columbia Valley.

The proposed areas went through a two-month public consultation process in the fall, and the now-protected parcels have been added to land set asidein the Chilliwack River Valley already put aside as OGMAs in June.

Altogether there are now about 55,000 old growth management areas in B.C., covering an area of approximately 3.9 million hectares.

Excluded from development and commercial timber harvesting, they are designed to provide plant and animal

habitats, and sometimes also recreational opportunities.

“This just furthers the objective of managing for the ecologically significant stands of old growth in the Chilliwack Forest District and providing that ongoing biodiversity element in a clearer way,” Chilliwack Forest District manager Allan Johnsrude told theTimes.

Although the province has maintained targets for old-growth protection for some time, they were base on percentages of the land base and not pinned down geographically.

“You could have it all lumped in one corner of the Landscape Unit and you could say, ‘Well, we’re still meeting the target’ but it wasn’t distributed very well,” Johnsrude said. “This clearly defines it on the landscape and moves us forward.” ◗ Visit www.for.gov.bc.ca/dck.

Kayak gates vandalized World-class venue stumped as to why someone would destroy property

O

ne of Canada’s premier whitewater kayakers was left in the lurch last week after vandals cut down a dozen wirestrung gates at the Tamihi Rapids on the Chilliwack River.

Jazmyne Denhollander had been planning on getting in another practice session in advanceoftheupcomingPan-AmericanCanoe Slalom Championships in Mexico. Instead, she spent last Thursday pulling fallen gates from the river where she learned her sport.

The gates are strung and maintained by the Chilliwack Centre of Excellence (CCE), a notfor-profit kayak club. Sometimes between Feb. 10 and 14, when Denhollander visited the river, someone cut the wires that held 12 parallel gates just above the surface of the water.

Shonnet Allen, one of the driving forces behind the CCE, says the vandalism is dispiriting.

“I can’t believe people would do this,” Allen said.

Club members had been on the river the previous weekend to repair damage to gates; some had been cut, while others had been downed by general wear and tear. It took a crew of eight people four hours to repair a halfdozen gates. Now, less than two weeks later,

the CCE is facing an even bigger job.

“We’ve always had some of these issues, but never like 12 all at once,” Allen said. “To willfully damage [the gates] like that and leave them dangling in the water, we we’re not up there who knows who could get tangled in them.”

The gates were cut on one side but left attached to the opposite river banks. That means the CCE can recover the gates.

Allen said the club believed previous vandalism may have been caused by teenage partiers.

But February is a little too early for outdoor partying. Fishermen, she said, occasionally get their lines tangled in the gates—despite them hanging above the water line—but are generally respectful.

“We all want to take care of the river—they don’t want their fish getting tangled up in this stuff,” she said.

Allen equated the vandalism—and discovering it, like Denhollander, when one was hoping to partake in a sport—to going to a hockey rink only to find it had been damaged and was unplayable.

The CCE hosts the first of its annual icebreaker races this coming weekend on the Hope Slough. With that event upcoming, Allen said the club will refrain from rehanging the Tamihi gates right away.

“Is it worth going and repairing them to have them cut down again?” Allen asked.

But the Tamihi is a world-class kayaking venue and Allen said a work party will eventually be assembled to rehang the gates in advance of the coming paddling season.

“It’s a national training site,” she said. “We’ve had many a champion trained on that course.”

The club has notified the RCMP and Allen urges anyone with information about the vandalism to call the police.

Hang-glider pilot charged in death of woman who fell 300m

A

charge of criminal negligence causing death has been laid against a hang-glider pilot in connection with an incident in which a 27-year-old woman plunged 300 metres to the ground last year.

William (Jon) Orders, 50, was flying with Lenami Godinez-Avila when she fell seconds after the launch of a tandem flight off Mount Woodside on April 28, 2012.

Orders, a Burnaby resident, was earlier charged with obstructing justice after police alleged he swallowed the data disk from a vid-

eo camera aboard his glider. Orders appeared in Chilliwack Provincial Court on Monday.

A report released in August by the Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association of Canada into the incident said Godinez-Avila’s harness was not connected to the glider on takeoff and that the required “hang-check”—a test to ensure that harnesses are hooked in—had not been carried out. The report ruled out equipment failure as a contributing factor.

The incident occurred as Godinez-Avila and her boyfriend were celebrating an anniversary.

Godinez-Avila fell into a clearcut area where a cherry tree has since been planted in her memory.

Water petition growing, city and FHA still talking

O

pposition from Chilliwack residents to treatment of the city’s drinking water system is ramping up despite the fact that the Fraser Health Authority (FHA) says chlorination is inevitable.

A petition created by local residents at www.chilliwackwater.com hit 3,000 signatures by noon on Wednesday. The couple behind the petition, Kim and Jake Reimer, say they want to see 10,000 signatures.

Mayor Sharon Gaetz has accused the FHA of fear-mongering and has defended the drinking water system against criticism after three isolated cases of E. coli were detected in hillside reservoirs since 2009.

FHA medical health officer Dr. Marcus Lem came to city council on Feb. 5 to say the city had to start adding chlorine to the water as a condition of its permit.

Lem said that because of the E. coli cases, the city has “poo in its water” and treatment is required as a proactive, preventive measure.

In an interview with the Times, Lem said chlorination is inevitable, whether it is now or later.

“I don’t want to be alarmist but I’m just saying this is what the standard is around the world,” he said. “Virtually every other community in B.C. and Canada is chlorinating their water and those that don’t, will be soon.”

City council was scheduled to hear an update from staff at its Tuesday afternoon meeting on the status of the FHA edict.

City representatives met with Dr. Paul

Van Buynder of Fraser Health on Friday “to review the Chilliwack water system, and to continue the discussion regarding secondary treatment of Chilliwack drinking water,” according to a note on the city’s website.

Van Buynder is quoted as saying: “While the residents of Chilliwack are rightly proud of their water supply and no one should be concerned about drinking the water, Fraser Health is working with the Chilliwack council to address the risk associated with isolated incursions of bacteria into the system.

Chlorination as an added safety support is part of these discussions” Many of those signing the online petition to oppose chlorination have made passionate comments.

“To chlorinate our drinking water would impact my finances doubly,” said Amy D. “Not only would I be forced to help pay for a system I’m against, but I would have to pay to install an in home filtration system as well. I cannot and will not drink tap water if the city is forced to chlorinate. I live in Chilliwack and work in Abbotsford. The water at my place of employment is disgusting!”

Patrcia W. wrote: “Surely 3 incidents don’t warrant such drastic action! Chilliwack’s water is known for being the best, let’s keep it that way! If we suddenly get an urge to drink water with bleach we can go to the local swimming pool!!”

Some, however, were more succinct.

Policing not VPD vs. RCMP

I

don’t think I understand the debate over a regional police force for Metro Vancouver.

Well, I understand part of the debate. There are certainly tradeoffs either way between having a big, integrated force for the entire urban area from West Van to Langley, or having local, municipal forces and RCMP detachments.

What I don’t understand is Vancouver’s position.

Vancouver has come out strong in favour of a regional force.

So why is Vancouver interested in joining now, when it hasn’t been in the past?

Since 2003, almost every police unit in the Lower Mainland has sent some of its officers to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). They’re murder specialists, some of the best investigators from Surrey and Langley, the North Shore, Burnaby, and Coquitlam. Civic forces like New Westminster and Abbotsford have joined, as well.

But not Vancouver. Vancouver investigates its own murders, and IHIT’s remit stops at Boundary Road.

IHIT has had its successes and its failures, like any police unit. But its mission is easy to understand.

In smaller communities like Langley, Maple Ridge, or Richmond, murders happen more rarely, if not necessarily at a lower rate per capita.

Be Our Guest Keeping a specialized homicide squad on duty is not justifiable. So instead, every small and mediumsized community shares the costs of investigating murders.

We also share a number of other policing costs across borders in the Lower Mainland. When people talk about local versus regional, do they know that the police helicopter service, or the police dog service, or various traffic and accident investigation services are already shared?

There are good reasons to keep local forces, and preserve local knowledge. A police officer who works a small area gets to know people, to gain the trust of the locals, and to identify the frequent lawbreakers on sight. One of the trends in the past two decades of policing has been towards neighbourhood policing, getting officers out of cars again and back among the citizens, in parks, on sidewalks and in schools.

There’s been some speculation that the VPD was previously reluctant to join groups like IHIT because they would have been outnumbered by Mounties —inter-

service rivalries go back to when Alexander the Great’s cavalry and infantry had their first bar fight.

I think Vancouver’s recent change of heart comes down to the idea that bigness itself is good, combined with Vancouver’s natural notion that it should be in charge of the Metro region that bears the city’s name.

Hold up there, for a minute. Creating a single, regional police force would also put command squarely in the hands of RCMP officers, or ex-Mounties if an entirely new force was created from scratch.

Vancouverites keep forgetting that they are not the dominant force in the Lower Mainland, and haven’t been for a decade or so now. The suburbs outnumber the centre to such a great extent that we’re creating new urban centres, like the Tri-Cities and Surrey, which in a few years will have as big a gravitational pull as Vancouver itself.

Heck, parts of Langley are approaching the density of East Van; parts of Surrey and Richmond resemble population maps of the West End. If Vancouver is so interested in a regional force, why jump in all at once? Fortunately, it means we are rarely disappointed. And so we weren’t as disappointed as we might have been last Tuesday—almost exactly three months ahead of the next provincial election—by Premier Christy Clark’s rather optimistic missive, the central theme of which appeared to be that B.C.’s economy is solely dependent on natural gas.

Certainly, the premier’s plan to create a new reserve fund—the British Columbia Prosperity Fund—sounds like a fine idea, particularly if the intent is to operate as the Alberta Heritage Fund was created in the 1970s by former premier Peter Lougheed to capitalize on revenues generated by his province’s oil reserves.

But Premier Clark’s stated purpose for the B.C. fund sounds more like it’ll just be a separate bank account to collect anticipated natural gas revenues, and then used like any other government tax or royalty revenue to service the province’s prodigious debt and help pay for government operations and services. It leaves us scratching our heads, wondering why the fuss with fancy names.

And while the premier’s projections of $100 billion in natural gas revenue and “10s of thousands” of jobs over the next 30 years have us all gasping in amazement, that needs to be tempered with a realization that 30 years is a long, long time, particularly in the light of an energy economy with a volatility that has been almost as amazing as the hopes for giant natural gas windfalls.

The premier’s apparent reliance on that natural gas revenue was disappointing, even for a pre-election throne speech.

There didn’t seem to be much else, other than a few vague promises about legislation to help children and abused seniors.

It didn’t offer much hope for those hit by B.C.’s relatively poor job-creation performance. Indeed, a promise for more realistic government advertising on that score would have been welcome.

It was all mostly just gas.

Aquifers doing just fine Editor: The City of Chilliwack performs 42 water quality tests each week or 2,184 every year or 10,920 tests over the last five years during which three reservoir results tested positive for E. coli bacteria.

I am totally aghast at the immense power the Fraser Health Authority must have to foist chlorination, a lowgrade chemical poisoning, on 80,000 people on such flimsy evidence when our aquifers are doing just fine, thank you.

No cases of E. coli infection have been reported during this time, and our water is some of the best to be found anywhere. So, no, I am not worried about E. coli in our tap water, and I will keep on drinking it and enjoying it.

However, I am worried about a few other important public health issues that do not seem to merit much attention from our health authorities. I was shocked about news of superbugs in our hospitals until I personally observed cleaning after a patient was discharged. The same cloth was used for wiping the bed, bedside table, windowsill, food tray and sink.

What also concerns me are some of the “questionably-processed” foods we are forced to consume: milk containing antibiotics and growth hormones; “pink slime” in ground meat and processed meat products; produce polluted with dozens of carcinogenic herbicides and pesticides and thickly coated with “food grade petroleum products”; and the unlabelled 70 per cent genetically modified food content on the supermarket shelves.

I also have concerns about the continuous onslaught of new development on top of our precious Sardis aquifer, the planned twinning of our local pipeline, and the detrimental effects the waste-toenergy plant will have on our already polluted airshed.

Sadly, while these important issues remain unaddressed the Fraser Health Authority nevertheless insists on chlorinating our water to keep us safe. And, worst of all, we have no final say in such a far reaching and negative decision.

What a shameful predicament for us all.

their water. That would be .0000075 of the population every year affected by E. coli in the water supply.

Dr. Lem is in fear of the “poo in the water.” I wonder if he has considered voicing an opinion on the poo in the air, that we experience here in Chilliwack.

The brown air affects thousands of people daily, very frequently. There does not seem to be any regulation of that. Possibly he could look at local respiratory statistics. Clean air is also a precious resource. Could there be a connection?

Could atmospheric contamination be restricted?

Addressing the source of the pollution may be a better solution than adding poison to the water. And is he doing anything about the poisons being added to the atmosphere?

Don’t shoot the messenger Editor: Re: Flood of support for water petition (Times, Feb. 14).

The recent discussions regarding warnings by Fraser Health for the need to chlorinate Chilliwack’s water has taken a curious turn.

The mayor, council and some public opinion are intent on “shooting the messenger” it seems.

Fraser Health Authority (FHA) is a government agency, administered by a government-appointed board whose role is to administer the Public Health Act which includes the Drinking Water Protection Act (laws made by the provincial government) as well as related federal laws. Fraser Health employs health professionals whose role is to protect our health proactively, when possible.

The support of several public petitions against chlorination seems to indicate that some of the public wants to make the decision of what is good for our collective health. According to media reports the mayor and council wants serious health problems to be evident before they are

prepared to take the FHA recommendations to chlorinate drinking water. They seem not to understand that the “science” has been done long ago and is the basis for the warning.

Purely by coincidence this controversy has appeared a few months before our provincial election and part of the city is represented by the party in power (the one that passed the acts), another part by the official opposition. It is a good time to remind our representatives that they represent us.

The MLA of choice’s name and phone number are in the phone book. Rather than shooting the messenger (FHA) I would suggest that the public turn to our provincial politicians who have the power to make changes in Fraser Health and the Public Health Act if change is warranted.

Coun. Lum just grandstanding Editor: If Coun. Jason Lum feels police should have a greater presence in outlying areas such as Yarrow and Rosedale, perhaps he should patrol it himself instead of advocating the transfer of valuable resources to such an ineffective idea.

I truly can’t believe that someone responsible for spending our tax revenue can come up with such a proposal. Either Coun. Lum is grandstanding in the media to garner attention to himself or he is completely out of touch with the realities of policing. Let me ask him, how often officers catch would-be property criminals breaking into a house “in the act?”

So, Coun. Lum suggests that we should take already stressed police resources and have them waste gas driving needlessly around rural neighbourhoods instead of doing their jobs, like investigating or responding to calls for service. It’s a good thing the RCMP is in charge of See LETTERS, Page 20

he good vibes are back for the Chilliwack Chiefs after a pair of solid wins last weekend, including a victory over the Mainland Divisionleading Surrey Eagles.

The Chiefs knocked off the West Kelowna Warriors 3-1 Friday and came from behind to defeat the Eagles 4-2 Saturday.

With just six games remaining in the regular season, the victories solidified the Chiefs’ hold on home ice advantage in the opening round of the fast-approaching BCHL playoffs.

The Chiefs will only go as far as goalie Mitch Gillam will take them.

And on Friday, he took them all the way to a desperately needed victory, making 48 saves for the win.

But Chilliwack responded immediately. Just 13 seconds after the Eagles had scored, Surrey turned the puck over at their own blue line and Trevor Hills made them pay by shovelling the puck past Eagles netminder Michael Santaguida.

Three teams capture Fraser Valley East titles

W. Graham’s up-and-coming hoop stars captured three city championships last weekend.

The Grizzlies Grade 9 boys and girls basketball teams both claimed Fraser Valley East titles over southside rival Vedder middle Friday.

The girls prevailed over the Vipers 46-32, while the boys took down their opponents 40-32.

On Saturday, Graham’s dominant Grade 8 boys squad capSCAN TO SEE PHOTOS tured the city championship by defeating Unity Christian 80-56.

“We did well,” said Grizzlies athletic director Jake Mouritzen about how his school’s younger teams performed over the weekend.

All three teams now move on to the Fraser Valley Championships this week, with Graham hosting the Grade 9 girls tournament Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

The Grizzlies senior squads, meanwhile, will both be looking for a back door into the provincial championships starting this week.

Those opposed to Bibles in Chilliwack public schools have rallied around a BC Humanist Association petition, which has attracted about 330 signatures since being put up last month.

Bats need protected, warm, tight spaces to rear their young and as many as 300 bats can reside in one bat box.

“Our bat populations are terribly low for many different reasons,” says Cynthia Berg, volunteer leader of the Eastern Fraser Valley Young Naturalist Club.

“This is all very exciting and it’s really important. . . .

We are looking at a very delicate animal that is in trouble in our valley.”

The young naturalists and their families were at LSC Pre-Cast Systems (owner Brian Janssens volunteered the facility) to build the boxes on Saturday.

Before setting to work, they were given a presentation on bat biology by Denis Knopp of the Chilliwack Field Naturalists, and then J. David Lush walked the amateur carpenters through the process.

The group then constructed seven bat boxes that will eventually be erected at the Camp River Wildlife Area with the help of BC Hydro which has donated old poles and will cover the cost of having them installed.

The project was also funded in part by a $200 Shell Stewardship Grant.

No, bats won’t get caught in your hair nor will they drink your blood.

One piece of real information about these nocturnal, flying mammals that should impress even the most squeamish person is that they eat mosquitoes by the hundreds.

There are 16 species of bats in British Columbia, half of which are threatened and all of which are protected by provincial legislation.

This past weekend, two dozen young naturalists in Chilliwack sought to help the tiny creatures out by building bat boxes that will be erected at the Camp River Wildlife Area.

Bats consume up to half their weight every night eating moths, beetles, crickets, flies and, most importantly, mosquitoes.

Letters On Friday evening my wife and I attended Chilliwack Cultural Centre for the performance by Ballet Jorgen of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.

I have to admit that I approached the event with an open mind, this is not exactly Covent Garden after all.

We were treated to an altogether marvellous and wondrous display of both artistic excellence and physical display and interpretation of this ballet, which is probably the world’s most famous. Ballet Jorgen is to congratulated fully. May they go from strength to strength.
