Shark group calls for ban on fin soup Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter

Burnaby city hall was the scene of a shark swarm recently. Between 60 and 70 demonstrators, including people from the Vancouver Animal Defense League and the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, gathered outside city hall prior to the evening council meeting last Monday night, asking Burnaby council to ban shark fin products in the city. Shark fin soup is considered a delicacy by the Chinese community and is sold at some restaurants and served at special events, such as weddings. Shark fins are frequently harvested by cutting the fins off the animal and leaving it to bleed to death in the ocean. Anthony Marr, a Vancouver animal rights activist, spoke to Burnaby council about the issue at the June 25 council meeting. He told the NOW that activists are approaching Burnaby, Richmond and Vancouver at the same time, as bans in all three cities would ensure people wouldn’t just hop the city border for shark fin soup. “Burnaby’s a very good place to start,” Marr said, adding it is near both Richmond and Vancouver. Burnaby also has a lower Chinese population than Vancouver and Richmond, which makes compliance with the ban more likely here, he added. The meeting went well and Coun. Sav Dhaliwal was very encouraging of the activists’ efforts, Marr said. Marley Daviduk of the Vancouver Animal Defence League is going to be approaching Vancouver and Richmond, he added, and the activists also plan to approach Port Moody, Coquitlam and North Vancouver councils later on.

But Mayor Derek Corrigan said a ban isn’t likely for Burnaby. “I don’t know how far the city will be inclined to go in regulating the food goods that are sold in the community,” he said. He added that council is aware of the issue but it is beyond the city’s scope to regulate food products. “We’re aware of this but it’s a difficult situation,” he said. “The city trying to establish control on what people eat or don’t eat is way beyond the jurisdiction we’ve exercised in the past.” The issue should be dealt with by the provincial or federal government, Corrigan added. “We need a policy that’s consistent across British Columbia and in fact Canada,” he said “If we’re going to ban the import of a product, then we should do so at a level where it’s most effective.” Corrigan referred the matter to city staff at the meeting, and asked them to compile a report including the city’s jurisdiction on the matter.

actually allowed insurance companies to stop insuring kids with disabilities, cancer survivors and those with chronic conditions still boggles our mind. And, to be sure, the court did not make its decision on what we might consider moral principles. It did so on a technicality – labelling the assessment for health care as a tax, and therefore in the government’s power to impose. This past weekend we celebrated Canada’s 145th birthday. It was also Saskatchewan’s 50th anniversary of the

introduction of Medicare. Universal health care may have its limitations, but the principle that health care is a Canadian right and not a company’s right to profit from is not only a compassionate moral position but also one that makes sense for our society. We are all connected – whether we like it or not. After the Supreme Court’s decision some Americans said they were going to protest by leaving the U.S. and relocating to Canada. Please, spare us.

Re: Refugee health-care cuts OK, Letters to the editor, Burnaby NOW, June 27. I’m a pensioner who has paid into health care since I was 16 and am now 61 and now have to pay $64 a month for my health care. I don’t like this one bit because, after all, I did pay into it for 45 years, but I do understand the government’s predicament. And, like Mr. Kravechenko, I agree this is a good place to start with cutbacks. One thing I don’t understand is how an immigrant over 65 can come to our province and automatically collect Old Age Pension without having

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Pipeline forum a ‘love-in’ continued from page 6

when we attended a pipeline information session on June 27 at St. Timothy. I was at an NDP love-in, interrupted by pipeline information. The presence of Salish representatives seemed a nice touch, and I kind of liked the two singers and their song about the environment. However, the many references to “being on native land,” both by them and others, soon made me want to check the legitimacy of the mortgage on our house in Burnaby, and I had to worry about making payments to the wrong bank. Anyway, there was no doubt that most people present had handed over ownership of Burnaby and all veto rights to native interests. It had all been said before. Most of those lining up at the mike were so wrapped up in their political statements that “questions” often had to be extrapolated. By the time enough people had spoken at the mike to convince us all that Burnaby is hostile territory for oil, I was too late to plead on behalf of jobs and the future of my grandchildren. Mayor Derek Corrigan, who seems to be very keen on alternate energy sources, might have been interested to hear that President Obama is saddled with several such failed enterprises, including the Solyndra company in California into which he had recently pumped US $535 million of taxpayer money. Now bankrupt, they can most likely be snatched up for a song. Even though the representative for Kinder Morgan managed to mention that their pipeline had worked fine until repeat-

edly attacked by an excavator, Mayor Corrigan was the clear winner. In comparison our MP, Mr. Kennedy Stewart, came across as a whiner about bill C-38 and his adoration for his green leader. His wanting more and longer debates only made sense to the converted. (What was really said during the last 18 years of the Mackenzie debate that could not have been squeezed in during the first few months?) Native laments about the disappearance of fish in our harbour conveniently left out that Europeans had also killed their own rivers. I am sure Victoria would stop dumping sewage into the ocean tomorrow if someone else handed them the money to make needed changes. I am also convinced that the next generation will scratch their heads about the sanity of our efforts, wanting to influence climate change the way we do. But, to some it must make sense. The way things made sense to our fathers when they did what they did and ignored those who knew better. However, Mr. Corrigan’s experience showed as he managed to score political points, including just wondering why no one from the provincial government was present. Finishing his opening statement he hoped we would all leave a little more scared. Way to go, mayor! Politics 101. The more outrageous the scare, the less you have to do when you show up for the rescue as the knight in shining armour! But I guess, there is also envy on my part. I too wish I could make people share my own fears. I am afraid of people who seem so eager to turn this country into another version of Greece! Ziggy Eckardt, Burnaby

Liberals: Prepare to lose MLAs continued from page 6

to argue her party has changed significantly from the Gordon Campbell era, but I suspect it will be difficult for her to attract a lot of high quality replacement candidates (again, who wants to sit in Opposition?) The pending departures on the NDP side are a smaller group: Michael Sather, Dawn Black and perhaps Gary Coons and Diane Thorne. When we get an official count of those not seeking re-election, it will likely be reflective of the directions the two parties seem to be heading. One looks like it’s headed for government, the other for electoral disaster. If the polls are accurate

and don’t change much, the number of B.C. Liberals leaving should be about three times that of New Democrats not seeking reelection. ◆ A number of observers have wondered if the tentative agreement between the B.C. Teachers Federation and their employer could have been reached well before now. Remember, for months the BCTF had been looking for a 15 per cent wage increase, and the employer was seeking a fair number of concessions from the teachers at the negotiating table. Here’s what I wrote in this space last December, more than a half year ago,

as I suggested how a deal could be struck: “Now, there is absolutely no hope of the BCTF achieving anything even remotely similar to what it is demanding when it comes to financial compensation … but what if the BCTF dropped its wage demands and said, in return, get rid of the concessions?” Well, that’s precisely what happened, and what it took to get a deal in the end. The BCTF agreed to a zero per cent wage hike, and the employer dropped the concessions. I hate to say I told you so, but … Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C.

Holmes, a new father, died at the scene. Mohammad Abdolmalekpoor, 43, of Burnaby, is facing one charge of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death. Crown counsel approved the charge on June 20. Abdolmalekpoor also faces four Motor Vehicle Act charges, including driving without due care and attention; driving without reasonable consideration; failure to ensure his vehicle was in safe operating condition; and operating a vehicle without effective service brakes. The accident occurred just after 11:30 a.m. on April 19, 2011.

The cement truck was coming down a steep hill on Holmes Street when it ran through a red light at the intersection of East Columbia Street and Tboned Holmes’ southbound car through a cement barricade and then tumbled down a steep drop-off into Lower Hume Park. Holmes was on his way to pick up his wife and infant son, Jackson, for a doctor’s appointment. Holmes’ death was a blow to his family and co-workers at Accurate Alarms. “He was just in my office 15 minutes before,” his boss, Tony Oljaca told The Province at the time. “Everybody’s in tears; there are two guys upstairs who are just destroyed.” Abdolmalekpoor, who is not currently in police custody, is scheduled to make his first court appearance on July 9. alau@ burnabynow.com

Just dropped by: Burnaby resident Thomas Tricarico got a visit from a bear last week. His North Burnaby home is near Barnet Road.

Bear strolls into local backyard NOW reader snaps a shot of bear in his Burnaby yard

Burnaby NOW reader Thomas Tricarico got an unexpected visitor just after 5:30 p.m. on the afternoon of June 26. Tricarico, who lives in North Burnaby near the Barnet Road area, said a black bear ambled into his backyard and he had just enough time to grab his camera and get some shots. “Was I scared? Not really,” said Tricarico. “If he had started to come toward me, maybe, but I would’ve gotten inside pretty quick.” Tricarico said the black bear wasn’t all that intru-

sive, as the lovebird in a cage in his backyard wasn’t even disturbed by the bear. Tricarico wasn’t the first person on his block to see the bear, as he noticed a neighbour go out the back door, see the bear, and then reverse track by going through the front door. Tricarico said he tried to call the conservation office for the area, but he didn’t get a response back. This isn’t the first time Tricarico has had a bear visit his place. He had a black bear come into his yard last year, as well. “There’s been lots of construction going on in the area, so maybe we’re infringing on their (habitat),” he said. www.twitter.com/AlfieLau

RCMP catch thieves in the act Two men, including a 31-year-old from Burnaby, are facing theft charges after the Burnaby RCMP’s prolific offender suppression team caught them trying to steal washing machines from a truck headed from Burnaby to Prince George. On Wednesday, police followed the truck from Burnaby to Langley after receiving a tip from the Prince George RCMP. “Our information was that over $14,000 in merchandise had disappeared from shipments originating in Burnaby and there was a strong possibility that an additional theft was about to occur,” Burnaby RCMP Sgt. Adam MacNeill said in a press release. The property was owned by a furniture retail chain. After police observed the two men removing several large boxes containing washing machines from the transport trailer, police moved in and arrested the two men without incident. www.twitter.com/AlfieLau

SPOTTING TROUBLE: A CLOSER LOOK AT SKIN CANCER DETECTION AND PREVENTION When it comes to health issues, ignorance is not bliss. Skin cancers are some of the most curable cancers, when diagnosed and treated early. If found late, they can be impossible to stop and may ultimately be fatal.

Recently, a group of volunteer dermatologists spent some time giving free skin screenings at an event organized by the Canadian Dermatology Association. The purpose of the event is twofold: to provide screenings to those who attend

but, more importantly, to spread education and awareness through the larger community. Reporter Christina Myers attended the recent screening day to learn more about skin cancers in Canada.

Awareness and education are critical Screening event hosted in Burnaby highlights skin cancer education Christina Myers staff reporter

For three hours on a recent weekday, a steady stream of people made their way into a trio of small, curtained examination rooms set up at Bonsor Recreation Centre, at an event organized by the Canadian Dermatology Association. By day’s end, the volunteer dermatologists had completed voluntary skin cancer screenings on nearly 100 people – many of those participating left with instructions to see their family doctors right away or to keep a close eye on their skin in the coming years. Of the 92 individuals screened by leading dermatologist Dr. Jason Rivers, Burnaby-based Dr. Michelle Withers and Vancouverbased Dr. Marcie Ulmer, seven were identified as having dysplastic nevus, more commonly known as an atypical mole – though usually harmless, atypical moles may be more likely to become melanomas down the

road and should be evaluated on a regular basis. Another 15 people were told they had markings known as actinic keratoses: lesions that can appear as red, rough, scaly spots and often show up on sunexposed areas of the body. Actinic keratoses are not skin cancers, but have the potential to change into squamous cell skin cancers. Finally, another seven people were identified as having suspected basal cell skin cancer. According to Dr. Jason Rivers – one of Canada’s leading dermatologists and a driving force in skin cancer prevention and awareness campaigns such as this one – that’s about right on the average for previous screening events, where they’ll typically see 20 to 30 per cent of people with some type of concern identified. That doesn’t necessarily reflect the average among the wider population, as the type of person who chooses to attend a screening may be someone who already has spotted something they’re worried about or is older and more likely to have developed a skin cancer. Either way, the priority focus Awareness Page 12

Early detection: knowing is half the battle

F

or the last six months, give or take, I’ve been eyeing this funny spot on my cheek. Now, my five-year-old would tell you I’ve got lots of “funny spots” and indeed I do – my colouring is such that I’ve got freckles and moles a-plenty, including “beauty marks” that I once hated and now have come to appreciate. Like many people my age, ON MY BEAT I’m cautious about sun exposure Christina Myers – fortunately, I’ve had a lifelong love affair with the breezy, shady spots of the world and tend to eschew beaches and other shadeless spots in the worst of the summer months. (I know what you’re thinking – good thing I live on the West Coast, right?) Still, in the back of my head are memories of summers spent as a child in Ontario, barreling around the neighbourhood without a stitch of sunscreen on. Or, worse, the years between about 13 and 18 when I desperately wanted a tan

and frequently pulled out the baby oil to go lay in the backyard. These teenage sun sessions never lasted long (see previous comment about love affair with the shade), but still, it can’t have helped. Hence the concern with the funny spot. I’ve spent a few minutes every day pondering it – had it changed? Was it bigger? Darker? Different somehow? A voice in the back of my head (sounding suspiciously like my husband, who ultimately got sick of me asking, “Does this look different to you, does it?”) kept insisting that I should take myself to the doctor and get it looked at. Normally I’m pretty quick to get a medical concern checked out. And yet, for some reason, I let this drag on for months. And then serendipity stepped in. My editor sent me a message about a skin cancer screening taking place in Burnaby, organized by the Canadian Dermatology Association as part of an awareness campaign they hold each year. Aside from being an interesting health story and an opportunity to pass some knowledge on to readers, it seemed that Screening Page 13

isn’t just about identifying possible issues with those who attend, but about educating the wider public generally. “Skin cancer rates are still increasing, but we’re seeing a tapering off of death rates in skin cancer (because of early detection),” he said. Rivers notes that, with early detection, a majority of cancers can be successfully treated. “In the early ‘50s, about 85 per cent of people who had melanoma died,” he said. “Now, 90 per cent live – due to early detection.” One of those who benefited from early detection is Sarah Wildman, a melanoma survivor and mom of two, who attended the screening event to help with awareness. Thanks to her skin tone and colouring, she’d been recommended to start seeing a dermatologist in her teens and continued having regular checkups through her 20s and 30s, which helped with quick detection. She thinks that a combination of sun exposure as a child combined with the use of tanning beds in her university years led to her first round with cancer at 26. She had another two cancers about a year and a half ago, and is now – at the age of 39, cancer free. But she knows she’ll be on watch for the rest of her life. “My mom did the best she could with the sunscreen but I have the palest skin, red hair – and it was a different time then, we didn’t really know,” she says. “The next whammy would have been the tanning beds in university – I think about it now, so ridiculous. What a ridiculous thing to do.” In a way, Wildman says her bouts with

skin cancer are a blessing: they have forced her to be incredibly aware of her skin and to watch for changes in a way that many people her age might not. In fact, she was the one who first spotted the second round of cancer and knew immediately there was something wrong. “My biggest advice is don’t second guess yourself: if you have a question about something or just that intuition that something doesn’t look right, see your doctor and get a referral,” she said. And, she says, educate your children about sun safety and cancer prevention. That’s a message that MLA Kathy Corrigan was echoing – her father passed away after a long battle with skin cancer. “We really grew up in such a different time – I remember putting baby oil on and you’d get a burn and think it would be a good ‘base’ for a tan,” said Corrigan. “Times have changed and I think people know more, but there’s still room for that awareness, especially with young people. It’s like smoking – now we know it’s not good for you, but people still have that inclination toward getting that tan.” Corrigan, in part because of her father’s experience, began seeing a dermatologist several years ago and has had a few moles removed as a preventative measure. “If there is one thing we keep hearing, it’s prevention – prevention and education,” she said. Visitors to the event, which was part of the national Sun Awareness Week, were able to take home a variety of fact sheets and pamphlets, including visual guides for the various kinds of skin cancers and pre-cancerous concerns, such as malignant melanomas, squamous cell skin cancer, basal cell cancers and more. cmyers@burnabynow.com

SPOTTING TROUBLE: A CLOSER LOOK Cancer fast facts

◆ Skin cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Canadians. It is also the most common cancer in the world. ◆Three people die each week in B.C. from melanoma. Last year there were 850 new cases of melanoma diagnosed in B.C., and 130 deaths. ◆ More than 81,300 new cases of non-melanoma

skin cancers (basal and squamous cell) are expected during 2012; about 8,500 Canadians will be diagnosed with melanoma in 2012. ◆ Melanomas are less common than basal cell and squamous cell cancers, but are the most dangerous type of cancer. ◆ The main cause of skin cancer is too much UV radiation. Some tanning beds can expose a person

to five times as much UV radiation as the sun. ◆ Simple measures like limiting sun exposure, seeking shade, wearing hats, using SPF30 or higher broad-spectrum sunscreen can help prevent skin cancer. For more facts, as well as tips on self-examination for skin cancer and descriptions of what to look for, see www.dermatology.ca or www.cancer.ca.

Screening: Bring concerns to doc continued from page 11

the universe was forcing my hand – I could hardly tell readers about skin and sun awareness without absorbing some of it myself. When photographer Larry Wright and I arrived at the start of the three-hour session, the place was packed. The Canadian Cancer Society had a presence there, with tons of informational pamphlets, and representatives from the Tanning is Out campaign – aimed at teens and young people, to discourage tanning – were also on hand. I can’t lie: I was incredibly nervous. The refrain that kept going through my head was “what if?” What if the doctor does spot something suspicious? What if this spot on my cheek is not just concerning but an actual cancer? What if I leave here with instructions to see my family doctor immediately. The ridiculous thing about this is that early detection for skin cancers is the absolute best way to deal with them. Death rates from skin cancers have dropped in recent years because of increased awareness and a rise in early detections. So my “what if” could be answered simply: finding out “bad news” today could only be ultimately “good news.” Because if that funny spot was indeed something bad, it certainly wasn’t going to go away on its own. I went into a curtained cubicle with Dr. Jason Rivers and, after asking him a series of questions for my story, I rolled up my pant legs and bared my arms and back for his inspection. He did a quick but thorough check,

using a magnification tool to take a closer look at some of my spots. “These are fine, these are all fine,” he said. The authority in his voice completely put me at ease – if he said they were fine, they were. (At a later physical checkup with my family doctor, I happened to mention this screening with Dr. Rivers and my doctor’s eyes just about popped out of her head. “He’s the guy for skin cancers,” she said.) Turns out I did have a few atypical moles that will have to be watched down the road, but that funny spot on my cheek was nothing to worry about. The relief was like a physical force – and I wished I’d simply dealt with it months earlier and saved myself the stress and anxiety. The ultimate lesson for me that day, and for readers I hope is this: if you have a concern, get it looked at. If something doesn’t seem quite right, have it checked. The best case scenario is that there’s nothing awry, and the worstcase scenario is that something that will only worsen will be spotted and dealt with. But worrying about it and not doing anything certainly won’t stop a problem from getting worse. Of the 92 people who attended the screening that day, several were identified to have possible cancers or pre-cancerous lesions … I can’t help but wonder how many of them might not have discovered this until it was too late, and if lives were saved that day. I have a feeling they were. Christina Myers is a reporter with the NOW, covering health, families and more.

City gets award nod Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter

Burnaby’s social sustainability strategy has won the 2012 Canadian Institute of Planners Award for Planning Excellence in the category of social planning. “Our social sustainability strategy is one of our greatest recent achievements,” said Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan in a press release. “Its development was innovative and deliberately collaborative with significant public involvement.” A 25-member, blue-ribbon steering committee worked on the strategy, and more than 700 Burnaby residents partici-

pated in the city’s public sessions, he said. “The strategy is bold, visionary and inspiring and will guide the city’s social plans and resource allocations over the next 10 or so years,” Corrigan said. Burnaby is working towards becoming Canada’s most sustainable community, according to the release. The strategy, which was introduced last July, is part of a three-pronged approach to managing Burnaby. The other two strategies are the economic sustainability, the first strategy the city introduced. The City of Burnaby then began work on its environmental sustainability strategy last winter.

Pumped up for the Giro by Connie Ou The Heights Contributor

Bike and helmet? – Check. Racing attire? – Check. Plenty of water? – Check. Unquenchable thirst for an action-packed, gripping race to the finish line? – Check. Hundreds of enthused cyclists are gearing up for the much anticipated Giro di Burnaby, which will make its fifth return to the Heights on Thursday, July 12. The Giro di Burnaby (pronounced “geero”) is a professional criterium cycling race that has attracted thousands of spectators in every year of its occurrence since its inception in 2006. Meaning “Tour of Burnaby” in Italian, and named after the second biggest cycling race in the world, the title of this event is a celebration of cultural diversity and pays tribute to the Italian community of Burnaby. This year’s Giro course features a highspeed, challenging 1.35 km loop that starts and finishes at the intersection of Hastings Street and Carleton Avenue, and stretches from Madison to MacDonald Avenue. As in previous years, there will be both a men’s race and a women’s race. The women’s race starts at 6 p.m. and consists of 30 laps, while the men’s starts at approximately 7:15 p.m. and consists of 45 laps. Participants vie for $15,000 worth of cash prizes, with the winners of the men’s race and women’s race also receiving a hand-crafted commemorative gold medallion worth an estimated $1,300 each.

Greek Taverna

So why is the Giro so much fun? As a bicycle road race, the Giro enables spectators to get close to the action – so close that they can see sweat trickle down racers’ faces as the pack whizzes by. The teamwork and use of tactics and countertactics against strategies also make a race like the Giro particularly exciting. Adding to the fun are sprint contests that take place within the larger race itself, called primes (pronounced “preems”), where racers receive money or prizes for crossing the start/finish line first on the next lap. Although primes have no impact on the final standings, they boost the momentum of the racing pack and make things doubly thrilling to watch. There are also family-friendly activities with fun for kids to be found at Heights Fountain Square at Macdonald Avenue. Most of all, the Giro takes place in the very heart of the Heights neighbourhood, known and loved for its rich history, unique blend of shops and restaurants, and friendly community spirit. Reflecting the values that have shaped the Heights into the special place that it is today, the Giro is a sporting event that is enjoyed by families, friends and individuals alike. The Heights is all set, on its mark and ready to cheer for the Giro contestants of this year. Connie Ou is a marketing and events assistant summer student for the Heights Merchants Association.

From the garden: Using fresh herbs in cooking adds versatility, nutrients and flavour to your culinary creations.

Dried and fresh herbs both have roles to play ON COOKING

M

Chef Dez

any consumers, without herb gardens of their own, will choose to purchase dried herbs more frequently than fresh due to cost and convenience. Dried herbs are suitable for certain recipe applications, however, there are just as many recipes that would benefit from fresh. Consequently, other than listening to your wallet, how should one discriminate when choosing between them? Although fresh herbs seem to offer the most flavour, they are not a necessity for all recipes. Dried herbs need time and moisture to release their flavours and therefore are adequate in dishes that require a certain amount of cooking time to allow for this rehydration. Examples of these recipes would be ones such as pasta sauce, chili, soups or other stewed dishes. Fresh herbs can be used in these applications but are better suited being added at the end of the cooking process, as they can loose their potency if cooked for too long. Many people also use dried herbs in marinades

and compound butters. Compound butters are combinations of herbs, seasonings and flavourings combined with butter to create finishing touches to certain dishes. Garlic butter, for example, is probably the most recognizable compound butter. A large misconception with dried herbs, however, is that they last forever. They don’t. There are steps one can take to inhibit their deterioration, like storing them in a cool dark place, but eventually they will lose their pungency. Typically, I would suggest replacing dried herbs every eight to 12 months if stored properly. I have found that the bulk foods sections at the grocery stores are the best option for doing this economically. Get in the habit of only purchasing slightly more than what you need for a recipe. This will keep your home inventory low and your recipes tasting better. Since the moisture (water content) has been removed from dried herbs, they are more potent (per measure) than fresh herbs. This is an important consideration when changing a recipe to accommodate the herbs you have on hand. The only herb, that this rule is not applicable to, is tarragon – it is more potent (per measure) in its fresh form. Given the choice to be stranded on a desert

island with either herb form, I would obviously pick fresh for its versatility, nutrients and fresh flavour. However, it is important to understand that dried herbs, when used and stored correctly, can play a vital role in our kitchens. ◆ Dear Chef Dez: I was recently given some fresh basil and added it to a pasta sauce I was making. I didn’t notice much difference in flavour than using dried basil, in fact I noticed less. Is this right? – Margarette T., Coquitlam Dear Margarette: This depends on how much basil you added and when you added it. Most dried herbs are more potent in the dry form as the flavour intensity is higher without water content. Therefore you would need to add a larger measurement of fresh than you would dry. When adding delicate fresh herbs, such as basil, do it at the end of the cooking process, about 30 seconds before serving. This will guarantee that the fresh flavours of the basil will be prevalent in your dish. Send your food/cooking questions to dez@chefdez. com or PO Box 2674, Abbotsford, B.C., V2T 6R4. Racing to help B.C. families Yacht crew raises funds for Down Syndrome Research Foundation Christina Myers staff reporter

A Burnaby organization that helps families around the province will be getting a little extra wind in its sails this summer. A six-man crew will travel from Victoria to Maui aboard the Ballymack for a three-week yacht race starting on July 5. Along the way, they’ll be raising funds for the Burnaby-based Down Syndrome Research Foundation. The choice was a personal one for crew member Allard Ockeloen,

whose eldest daughter, Emily, has Down syndrome. The nine-year-old is in fourth grade at her local public school on Bowen Island, and loves books, music, movies and swimming. “I want people to know and experience the true gift of knowing someone with Down syndrome,” said Ockeloen. “I read an article from a parent raising a child in Holland; she was convinced that if every family had a child with Down syndrome, the world would be a better place. I can tell you it certainly wouldn’t be a worse world to live in.” Ockeloen says he and the team are hoping their participation in the race will raise not just funds, but also awareness about the work of the foundation. The organization was started in

1995, and offers programs for individuals with Down syndrome from infancy to adulthood, such as baby sign language programs, speech therapy, literacy and social development programs. The Ballymack is captained by Mike Cormack, with John Letchford, R.C. Myles, Walter Norman, John Verver and Ockeloen as crew. The team is sponsored by Development Analytics Inc. To follow the team, see http://ballymack. blogspot.ca, and to support their DSRF fundraising efforts, see http:// dsrf.kintera.org/vic-maui. The annual Victoria to Maui International Yacht Race has been running every second year since 1968, running from Victoria to Lahaina, Maui over some 2,308 nautical miles.

Burnaby thrower London bound BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com

One young man’s dream became a community’s pride at the Canadian national Olympic track and field trials in Calgary last week. Burnaby Central grad Curtis Moss achieved his athletic ambition at the final Olympic qualifying meet of the season, winning the men’s javelin at the national event with a throw of 77.83 metres. With the win at the national trials, coupled with earning Athletics Canada B standards last month, Moss qualified for Canada’s Olympic Games team. “I’m just super excited to go to represent Canada and Burnaby as well,” said Moss about being named to the national Olympic team. But the notification came with a couple of days of suspense for Moss despite the assurance from an Athletics Canada official prior to the medal ceremony that he had made the team. A selection committee took nearly two more days before finally ratifying the 40-member team. “It was so hard,” Moss added. “I couldn’t believe it. It was like I was going to wake up and somethiing bad was going to happen.” It didn’t. Throwing better than the 82-m A standard would have automatically earned Moss a spot on the national Olympic team. His main rival was Scott Russell of Ontario, who threw 84.41m last year to establish a new Canadian record. Russell needed a B standard throw this season to make the team. Russell placed third at the trials with a throw of 71.73,

nearly two metres behind B.C.’s Kyle Nielsen. Moss earned his two B standard distances in the local National Track League series meets last month. At the Harry Jerome Track Classic in Burnaby, Moss threw better than 80m for the first time ever, hurling the spear over that

distance on two occasions at the Swangard Stadium meet. Three days later, he did it again in Victoria, throwing a personal-best 81.21m. At the national trials, the 25-year-old athlete opened the competition with what would have been a winning throw of 77.13m into the swirling

winds at Foothills Stadium in Calgary on June 29. “I just salute him,” said Burnaby throws coach Don Steen. Moss went into this season with a drive and a determination to achieve his dream, and without the athletic carding by the sanctioning athletic body other athletes enjoy.

Moss and his family and friends fundraised to send him to high-performance meets in order to get the experience and competition he needed to reach his goals. Moss started with a win at a Grand Prix meet in Puerto Rico in May. He then ventured to Europe, where he finished second in a top European throwing meet in Halle, Germany, where he achived a then personalbest 79.27m. “The support was crazy – that was really motivating. … You think about those things that what you are doing is important to you and to other people,” Moss added. That support from his family and close friends was there in Calgary, too. After his final throw, Moss ran back to the stadium fence where his coach and family were standing. “It was really cool. It was great to share all that with them and to be so close. I was crying like a baby,” said Moss. “For the journey from (high school) to now, it’s been great to share my knowledge with him,” said Steen. “It’s an ego thing for me. I feel good. But you know, it’s been a journey, and at this point, he’s not finished. From my perspective, the journey has just started.” Later this week, Moss will compete at a couple of high-performance meets in Moncton, N.B. and in Toronto this Sunday. Moss will then return home in time for the B.C. championships in Coquitlam on July 13. The national team will also travel to Germany on July 22 for a pre-Olympic training camp later in the month. The men’s javelin throw qualification is scheduled for Aug. 8.

Gymnast third in vault at Olympic selection meet Tom Berridge sports editor

Flicka Gym Club’s Briannah Tsang had a best third-place finish at the Olympic women’s final selection meet in Gatineau, Que. last week. The 16-year-old North Burnaby Secondary student scored a 14.450, with a high degree of difficulty, in

the vault at the Olympic artistic gymnastics selection meet. She was also sixth on the balance beam. Tsang finished in 10th place in an 11-competitor field after Day 1 of the two-day competition. Team selection was also based on results from the 2012 Canadian championships, where Tsang placed fifth overall. Three-time national all-around

champion Kristina Vaculik of Ontario topped the 11 Olympic hopefuls for one of the five available spots on the London team. Fifteen-year-old Victoria Moors of Ontario placed second overall following the highest score in Thursday’s final competition. Brittany Rogers of Coquitlam moved up three places from her sixth-place ranking to also earn

a spot on the Canadian Olympic team after a third-place finish in the all-around. Dominique Pegg of Ontario and Ellie Black of Halifax, who won two medals at a World Cup meet in Croatia in April, took the final two spots on the national team. Ontario’s Jessica Savona and Madeline Gardiner were named team alternates.

Valiante took over the car after a bad pit stop dropped the No. 93 Honda from third to 13th place. Valiante took the lead from eventual runnerup Pierre Kleinubing in a Mazda Speed 3 on the 33rd lap and led the rest of the way, posting a racehigh 27 lead laps to claim the team’s second win in the street tuner class at the Continental Tire 150 at Watkins Glen, New York, the team’s third podium finish in less than a month “It’s great to be on a roll. Hopefully we can keep it up,” said Valiante on Monday. “Pierre Kleinubing was really good coming up the esses and into the inner loop. I was able to hold him off two or three times before I realized I had to get a really good run in the last corner through Turn 1 so I could hold off his attack. It was very difficult,” said Valiante in a Grand Am press release. “It was a good day for points, but I was trying to win no matter what,” said Kleinubing, the new ST points leader. “Every time I got close to Valiante, he dug deeper and pulled away.” Valiante and co-driver Chad Gilsinger claimed HART’s first ST win of the season series at MidOhio in June. The pair then placed second at Road America in Wisconsin last week. The three consecutive podium finishes moved the HART No. 93 car into the top 10 in the overall series’ team standings. This weekend, Valiante will be racing for JDX Racing in a Porsche with at the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park, Connecticut.

WESTERN LACROSSE ASSOCIATION

Lakers snatch defeat from the jaws of victory Tom Berridge sports editor

Holding off the Victoria Shamrocks proved too heavy a load for the Burnaby Lakers on Friday. The senior A Burnaby club held a five-goal lead midwaythroughitsWestern Lacrosse Association match with visiting Victoria, but wound up on the losing end of an 11-9 scoreline at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre. “Devastating,” was the first word to come from the mouth of Burnaby second star Carlton Schuss, who potted his second consecutive multi-goal outing for the Lakers. Schuss’s hat trick goal at 12:37 of the middle frame gave the home Lakers a 8-4 lead, sending ’Rocks goalie Josh Phillips to an early shower. Matt Flindell returned to the game and seconds later, Peter McFetridge scored his first goal of the season on a two-on-one transition. But that’s the last goal Flindell would give up. Victoria cut the deficit to three goals just before the interval, and then tallied

five unanswered markers to steal a win that had Burnaby written all over it. “We weren’t playing fundamentally well (in the third period),” said Schuss, who has scored seven goals in his last two outings for the Lakers. “You want to close them down in the last few minutes. We were really looking for that next goal to get us rolling, but the ball just wasn’t bouncing.” Lady luck was not on the Lakers side either. After a late goal by first star Ryan Benesch cut the lead to four goals, Cory Small got what appeared an easy one with the goalie on the bench for a sixth attacker. In the third period, Jeff Shattler drew the visitors to within a goal following an iffy slashing penalty call. Mitch McLaren then tied the contest with a blind spin-a-rama shot following an offensive turnover with five minutes left in the game. Dan Lewis was in goal for Burnaby facing 47 shots, including 22 in the final frame. Burnaby’s next game is Friday at home against New Westminster.

Former Simon Fraser University track athlete Jessica Smith earned a spot on the Canadian Olympic team to London. Smith finished third in the women’s 800 metres at the Olympic trials in Calgary last weekend, after setting an Olympic A standard in the event, with a time of 1:59.86 earlier this month at the Harry Jerome Track Classic in Burnaby. Smith placed behind race winner Lemlem Ber Ogbasilassie and runnerup Melissa Bishop, all under 2:08.00, at the trials. Smith ended her collegiate track career with a win in the 800m at the conference championships.

Juniors to finish out of the playoffs Tom Berridge sports editor

The Burnaby Lakers will miss the B.C. Junior Lacrosse League playoffs for a second consecutive season. The junior A Lakers dropped three games in a four-day span, including a 15-6 loss to the firstplace Coquitlam Adanacs at home on Sunday. The A’s led 12-2 after two periods of play. On June 30, Victoria topped the Lakers 12-4 on the Island at the trade deadline. Earlier, Burnaby let slip a victory in Langley, giving up five goals in

the final period en route to an 11-9 defeat to the junior Thunder. Following the game, Burnaby sent team captain Jaeden Gastaldo and Colton Dow to Langley in return for future considerations. Team scoring leader Kris Liset was dealt to the Port Coquitlam Saints for a player or players to be named later. Ryan Watson was also traded to the Delta Islanders for futures and a player to be named in 2013. In all, Burnaby gave up five of its top six scorers, plus its third-year starting goalie in trades leading up to the deadline.

Team president and general manager Richard Appels said while he hopes the moves will further strenghten the club, the junior team will get some help from the graduating intermediate players. “For the first time in three years we’re going to actually have players coming out of Burnaby – at least six maybe seven,” said Appels. “We’re going to be reliant on the (intermediate) draft.” Burnaby holds the fourth and eighth pick and one in the second round in the draft. The Lakers close out the season on Sunday against New West.
